As my Martial Arts teacher used to tell us, "no matter how good you are at something, there's always someone who is better; so NEVER underestimate your opponent".
Just loved those songs. Very cool. I used to think I could sing it. I was like 7 running around singing it like I was a star with my hairbrush microphone
The song refers to 42nd street, most likely NYC a very different place in 1972. Back then prostitution, drugs, and all night nudie movie theaters were everywhere. It was definitely not the place to visit.
When I was a very young man, I watched Jim Croce perform on a TV show one evening. A few days later, I heard a news cast announcing he'd been killed in a plane crash. To say I was stunned would be an understatement. Such a great storyteller gone way, way too soon.
thank you for doing these Jim Croce reactions, i remember how sad i was at 9 years old when he passed away. he had only 3 albums and left behind so many great songs.
the message i get from this song is that no matter how tough you are and how bad you think you are theres always going to be someone bigger and badder than you
omg, honey, u had me LOL'ing when you said "he needs some milk".....and "he got to' up from the flo' up"......i was laughing so much i had to rewind cuz i missed some song.....LOL
Back in the day I was a teenager and Jim Croce songs blanketed the airwaves. They were so much fun, or soooo romantic that you couldn't help singing along. Have you heard "Workin' At The Carwash Blues" yet??
Jim Croce was a legend and a stand up guy. Before he made it big he was booked for concert for peanuts that he had to postpone. After he was famous and playing in front of thousands, he honored the small venue in Louisiana and played the gig. He died leaving that concert. Sad
I was a little kid when Croce died, but I wish he would have lived so I could have seen him at a show. Seeing him and Maury perform in a small smokey bar would have been spectacular.
WOW! OMG! For over 40 years I have heard this song. I bopped along & sang along about the tough guy Jim but not until I saw this posted with the words did I get the switch. Jim Croce the master song writer & story teller.
Jim Croce (1943-1973) was born in South Philadelphia, raised in Delaware County and graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1960. He then studied at Malvern Prep before enrolling at Villanova University, where he was a student disc jockey at the schools radio station. In 1966 Croce’s parents gave Jim & his wife to be a $500 cash wedding gift to be used to finance an album. Croce's parents were certain that Jim would fail completely and abandon music. To their surprise, he not only sold every last record but also turned a profit of almost $2500. The majority of those records were sold at Croce's shows. After they were married they moved to Media and Jim was a regular performer at The Riddle Paddock in Lima. Pa. where he worked for $25 a night, plus a steak dinner & all he could drink. To make ends meet, Jim had various jobs including working a jackhammer, driving a truck and he was even a substitute teacher in the Chester-Upland School District. I lived in Media for over 50 years, and have friends that were students for Jim..........
Ahhh, thank you for that added bonus at the beginning - Tracy Chapman! I take particular delight in this Jim Croce song because I'm from south Alabama.
Definitely sure the person doing the lyric typing was NOT up on the references in the lyrics...there was a point to the references to Superman and THE Lone Ranger. I LOVE Jim Croce. He was a brilliant songwriter and storyteller.
I've watched many reaction videos to this song and you are the only one to acknowledge the new bad boy from Alabama named Slim who came to town and took out Jim. No other reactions videos picked up on that.
Uptown got its hustlers The Bowery got its bums 42nd St. got big Jim Walker He a pool-shootin' sonuvagun Yeah, big Jim got his "hat" Finding out "where it's at" Out hustling' people strange to you Even if you do got a two-piece custom-made pool cue
As I've commented before. The lessons learned here are #1 There is ALWAYS someone tougher. #2 EVERYONE takes a beating at some some time or another. #3 There are NO exceptions to lessons 1 and 2 !!! Another life lesson that will serve you well in being an adult is this... Nobody said you have to like it, you just have to do it. Remember that when at work, at school, in the military, as a parent, or when your girlfriend tells you she wants to go dancing, or the opera, or a play etc.
The line is “Bowery got its bums”. The Bowery is a neighborhood in south Manhattan just north of Chinatown. It had low-brow concert halls, brothels, German beer gardens, pawn shops, and flophouses that were still there when I was growing up. Muggings, drunks, bums, etc. The Bowery Boys. - BG
Gee India, I haven't been watching you as frequently as I had been. This coronavirus isolation is mixing up my waking and sleeping cycle. I've missed you. It's good to see you again. I always enjoyed Jum Croce. Thanks for the opportunity to hear it through your ears. You bring a refreshing perspective to a n
Jim was one of the few songs I remember from my father. I was a child in the 80s and he'd always play Bad, Bad Leroy Brown or some other song. Jim was taken way too early.
I grew up on this song. My mom loves his music. I even ate a very nice dinner at the restaurant in San Diego that was named form him and owned by his widow Croce's.
HAH! That's the first time I've ever seen the lyrics & so the first time I've ever paid attention to the story.......even though I remember the song from when it first came out.
Jim Croce is a great songwriter and fantastic storyteller. Jim Croce didn't get the credit he deserved because he got hustled by a slicker in NYC just before he first bust out on the 1970s music scene. He died young in a plane crash. It's a sad tale; he had a very young son and a wife he loved and they've been fighting all these years for royalties and recognition!
Sometimes it hits me right in the heart. I’ll have to say I love you in a song is awesome. I think have you already done, his song I got a name? It’s awesome too
I love your videos. This a great song. I think you need to try Paper Lace, "The Night Chicago Died". The other would be Five Man Electrical Band, "Signs" and "Absolutely Right"
Master storyteller, such a tragic loss. RIP Jim
Jim Croce writing gangsta rap lyrics a full decade before rap hit the scene.
Actually the term rap was a Jazz term. So there was rap before the 1980's
Its country😑 COUNTRY!!!!
@@brodapagarna6275 but his rhythm is similar to that of 70s rap

Jim can get me riled up for a barroom hustle and then make me weep like a baby with a song like "Operator". A true poet.
Jim was known for his story telling, his character songs and his love songs.
But Jim was known for being big and dumb
As my Martial Arts teacher used to tell us, "no matter how good you are at something, there's always someone who is better; so NEVER underestimate your opponent".
Very good advice…I’ve definitely learned the hard way😉 Great song!
The word where the question mark was is Bowery, a neighborhood in NYC.
The location of the once great CBGB's
I was surprised the person transcribing the lyrics didn’t understand “Bowery”.
I appreciate that they put a ? instead of making something up
@@itscrazyal …Country Bluegrass and Blues.
@@agresticumbra There were a ton of mistakes. I'm not surprised at all.
"Tore up from the floor up!" I love it!!! I'm using that one.
That is an old blues song title. Pat Travers did an excellent cover of it.
Jim Croce is my favorite songwriter of the 70s. Amazing talent, we definitely miss his talent.
Along these lines of tough guy songs, you should check out BIG BAD JOHN, sung by Jimmy Dean. Classic song.
While she's at it she needs to check out 16 Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford too.
Actually if you can find it big bad John by Paul Lynn funny funny
Oops new it was wrong. It's Paul lynde
Leroy Brown is a tough guy until he finds out that Doris has a husband. Jim is a tough guy until he hustles the wrong guy at pool.
I totally agree Douglas
"... tore up from the floor up"! Never have heard that before- HILARIOUS!! LMFAOROTF!
" He need help. He need some milk" OMG!🤣🤣🤣🤣Great reaction, as always.
Lol, "Jim got tore up from the floor up!" That was awesome:)
"He needs some milk!" Priceless.
Jerry Reed does a very good cover of this.
If you like this one, you will like 'Roller Derby Queen.' However I think we can all agree that all the Croce songs are worthy.
Jim was a great song writer his songs were always relatable miss him
Just loved those songs. Very cool. I used to think I could sing it. I was like 7 running around singing it like I was a star with my hairbrush microphone
It was tragedy when we lost him way too soon. He had a way with a lyric that told a story. Thanks - love to see you enjoy my favorite tunes.
Great reaction, I love that song. "I got a name ", is another good song by him
Night night, Jim. New big man's in town now.
Add I Got a Name to the list of must-hear Jim Croce songs! One of my favorites.
Roller Derby Queen... A must listen...
