The Magic have a 3 point lead with less than a minute remaining in Game 1 of the 1995 NBA Finals. Nick Anderson is sent to the line to seal the deal for Orlando with about 10 seconds left in the game. The rest is history.

Nick Anderson missing those 4 free throws really deserves a deep rewind. By missing those 4 free throws some how created a weird domino effect, (Them getting swept in the series, Shaq leaving for la the next year, Brian hill getting fired two years later and etc). Now if he had made one, (They win this game, Win this series in 7, There confidence is sky high going into next season as champions, Even if they don't repeat, Shaq probably gets the contract he deserves, The penny & Shaq era goes well into the Millennium, There's no Kobe & Shaq, No lakers dynasty, etc. Him missing the free throws really was the catalyst for things to come in the future and beyond!!!

1st round vs Jazz (in a five game series), Houston was down 0-1, Rockets win in 5.
2nd round vs Phoenix: Rockets down 0-2, win in 7.
In WCF: Hakeem humiliated David Robinson (the MVP), Rockets win 4-2.
Even Shaq has admitted that Olajuwon was not gonna lose that series.
@Johnny Paycheck I totally agree. During the regular season the Rockets were always digging themselves into holes and then coming back to win the game. My friends and I jokingly said "the Rockets like it from Behind."
They could've gone down 0-2 just like they did in the 2nd round vs the Suns. It wasn't gonna matter.

Shaq got swept 5 times from 1994-1999.
1994 1st round Indiana swept Orlando 3-0
1995 Finals Houston swept Orlando 3-0
1996 ECF Chicago swept Orlando 3-0
1998 WCF Utah swept LA 4-0
1999 Semis San Antonio swept LA 4-0
The only year of this 6 year stretch where Shaq didn't get swept was 1997 and even that was a pretty weak defeat as Utah beat LA 4-1 in the Semis that season.

In that situation they didn’t want to shoot right away, they wanted to wind down the shot clock. That’s why grant dribbled away from a pretty open layup. Still crazy and unfortunate about Anderson though...

Yeah, he LITERALLY beats himself up after the first one. Not a healthy approach. I think most athletes today know how to refocus, let go of the past, and stay in the present.

I was a huge Orlando Magic fan back then watched every game of these finals, I was just stunned when Nick missed them free throws still haven't recovered from it to this day!
I was a young Nick Anderson fan living in Portland Oregon. I was a fan from the time he got drafted. I even had a Nick Anderson jersey back then! I was devastated when this happened, and the hard time I got from friends couldn't be nearly as traumatic as what Nick went through. His career never recovered, and I am sure to this day he thinks about it. He was a good guy, and a good teammate.
He was never the same after this.

He was really nervous, thumping his chest after first miss, then after the rebound on second miss, yelled out loud to get over it. On his third, he was smiling after he missed, thinking maybe smiling can loosen his nerves and the fourth attempt looks hurried, biting his lips showing anxiety ok I'll shoot it now hope it's goes in and get a relief. He should have taken his time on those 3rd and 4th, took some deep breaths, regain his form, get to that rhythm that he used to in his fts, he could have at least got a friendly bounce and get one to go in.

Not the first time Anderson failed to deliver in a big moment. 6 years earlier in the final 4 with Illinois, Anderson failed to box out on a missed 3 pointer by Michigan which lead to an offensive rebound and game winning put back. Michigan, who Illinois had beaten twice that season. went on to win the championship.
Arkansas won the title in 1994. Michigan won years before that.

Shaq & Penny could have been legendary. They were swept in '95 by Hakeem's Rockets, thanks to Nick Anderson's monumental choke job in game 1. The following year they were swept by Jordan's Bulls in the conference finals. Shaq went to the Laker's afyer that, where it took him 4 years to win his 1st title. Something he could have accomplished with Orlando if he had stayed put in Orlando. But, a last,

The Orlando Magic have yet to win a title to overcome their heartbreaks in the Shaq and Penny era from 1994 to 1996.
@Ro 2 There's one thing you forgot: KD was an unrestricted free agent on the Fourth of July in 2016. That means KD can choose which team he wants to sign and play for and he chose the Golden State Warriors.
As for 2018, the Rockets did well with their gameplan in Game 7 without CP3 until the Rockets shot themselves right through their own foot by living by the three and dying by the three and in 2019, the Dubs beat the Rockets despite CP3 healthy and having a banged up squad.
So by your logic, the L.A. Lakers' three-peat from 2000 to 2002 was a farce because Shaq signed with the Lakers instead of re-signing with the Orlando Magic after the 1996 season.

The 4 free throw misses weren't the only blunder from Nick Anderson. On the following play, he failed to take the delay of game during the out of bounds right before Kenny Smith hit the game-tying 3-pointer to send the game into overtime. On the Clyde Drexler drive to the basket in the closing moments of overtime, Nick didn't keep Drexler from driving right, which was his dominant-hand. This triggered Shaq coming over to help with a double-time. The result was a game winning tip-in from Olajuwon and a 120-118 Rockets victory.
Got blown by on the Rockets' winning score, too.

1994: Bryon Scott hit a game-winning three-pointer for the Indiana Pacers with two seconds left in Game 1 and won another game decided by three points or less in Game 2. Pacers swept the Magic in three games in Round 1.
1995: Nick Anderson missing four three throws where the Magic could've sealed Game 1 of the 1995 NBA Finals and allowed the Houston Rockets to claw back and force overtime to win Game 1. Rockets swept the Magic in four.
1996: The Magic blew a 18-point third-quarter lead in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Chicago Bulls and lost. Bulls swept the Magic in four.

I feel sorry for him. He went from making a big time crucial steal against a returning MJ and the Bulls to this. Seeing him miss those 4 free throws is not only tough to watch but also that was the moment where he started to decline.

Those poor free throws made such an impact that not only turn the series around but impacted the future of the Orlando Magic and Shaq eventually leaving.
Not to mention Nick was never the same player again. He went from being one of the best small forwards in the league to avg around 3pts a game. Talk about tragic.

I still to this day believe Anderson threw that game on purpose. People forget, he didn't just miss four straight free throws. He also failed to take a delay of game that his coach asked him to do. It shocked the whole Orlando defense because they were expecting him to step out of bounds and delay the game. He didn't.
So yeah, something was always bizarre about that first game, and despite putting on a nice acting job, none of his frustration looked sincere.

@@TheCarlson25 Yeah, this was back when the NBA had their crooked felon refs calling games for them. And we all know one conviction alone means it was more widespread than we'll ever know. The NBA and its teams are corporations "too big to fail." Chances are for every two convictions, there were three, four, five, six refs actually participating, and some players had to be a part of that.
I have zero proof other than just the tape of that game and his performance the rest of the playoffs that year. These are professionals. Anderson's free throw percentage was 70% in 94-95, and 68% in the playoffs. Missing four straight in a playoff game like that, that's fantasy island even for Shaquille O'Neal. Anderson wasn't a rookie either, he was 27 that year, the age most players throw off playoff jitters.
@@KWCline91 Could be man. I have no proof at all and wasn't even rooting for the Magic (I hated Shaq), but the whole scenario was about as fishy as Chicago's 1998 miracle against Utah (one I celebrated). There were a whole lot of questionable player flops and sudden jitters in the mid-late 90s.

This almost same exact situation happened the year before with my SuperSonics in game 4 of the first round when they were the #1 overall seed and the chip was theirs for the taking. Kemp who was a 70 something percent ft shooter had a chance in the final minute of regulation up 3 to close it out if he could just make 1 of his 2 free throws but missed both then the nuggets went back down and hit a 3 sending it to ot and then beat us. Kemp makes one of them and one of the biggest choke/upsets in nba history never happens. Sucks how things can go sometimes.

Yeah maybe, but that’s kinda my point too. There never should’ve had to even be a game five. I’ve always felt that the fact that there even had to be a deciding game 5 after they all but had them in game 4 had to be so deflating and in their heads that it’s kinda the reason they blew it. Cause now all the pressure was on them and none on Denver. Even GP said in an interview that when that game went into OT he just wasn’t confident they’d win. Something about those earlier 90s Sonics.. they’d have these great regular seasons but then it’s like they’d have some kind of mental block when it came to the playoffs. Could be they hadn’t established a true leader? Who knows.

After missing the first 2 free throws, the Magic should have called a timeout. Coach should have taken Nick aside, and tell him just to relax and be cool. In Nick's mind, he thought his team won before the game was over.

It wasn’t just Anderson who was never the same after this. Aside from Shaq EVERYONE on that Magic team pretty much went into free fall. Penny Hardaway would have one more epic season after this but the injuries started pulling up. Dennis Scott suddenly started playing like a 40 year old (he was 24) and got traded two seasons later. Horace Grant stayed with the Magic for a few years after this but that’s only because the Magic could not find a team to trade him to with that huge contract of his, he pretty much started dropping off after 96-97 (yes he did win with LA a few years later, but I would hardly even call him a role player on that squad)
They really overachieved that year in 1995. When you think about the landscape in the NBA, specifically in the Eastern Conference, the tradition was an up and coming team learned to lose in the playoffs for a few years before they would go on to be successful. The Celtics learned to lose to the Sixers before they beat them. The Pistons did the same thing to the Celtics before they won against them. Then it was the Bulls' turn against Detroit. The Magic never really had to go through that process, which might've been the reason why they faltered down the stretch in the Finals.
@@KWCline91 in the NFL its different. Brady won 3 Superbowls before he lost a playoff game. Montana won a lot early and with little struggle. And Cowboys rose to the top quickly in 90s. The NBA ia boring and teams have to "pay their dues" before they win anything.

I remember there being a documentary about this team with the Rockets saying there wasn't going to be a Game #5 after the way they came back and somehow won this game, against such long odds, when not one thing had to go wrong in order for that to happen. Yet what I don't get is why the hell did the Magic not foul in the final seconds, and give the Rockets the chance to even get the game tying three off for that matter too?
Orlando coach told the team to take a delay of game penalty so they could see Houston's play. Then after the dead ball they were going to foul. Marie Elie was inbounding so his man NICK ANDERSON was supposed to step outta bounds to get the delay of game call. He Didn't. Look & see how surprised the Orlando defense was when the ball was in bounded. The defense wasn't ready and Kenny Smith hit the 3 to tie the game

Afterwards they were supposed to be saying Nick Anderson was the difference in the Magic in game 1 in winning,NOT Nick Anderson was the reason Magic lost game 1. It was expected he made Free Throws fans celebrating the game 1 Magic victory, teammates are happy ,coach pleased. Nick Anderson screwed all that up. It's been 26 yrs now still one of the biggest finals chokes in history.
I called the local Orlando sports talk station that morning. They asked who was winning the series, and who to watch in game one. I told them Rockets in Six and Jenny Smith. They scoffed at the idea of Smith saying hed just been benched in favor of Sam Cassell. I told them he was due and hed light it up. I didnt exoect him to drop 7 3 pointers.

Look at the low resolution on this. It looks like water colors compared to what we have now but it is how everybody enjoyed sports back then. People think refs suck now but the truth is that with HD, better cameras, and lots of angles, you can see almost every detail of what happens during a play. Refs do a great job in real time but impossible to do better than replays.
This still hurts.

Don't know why so negativity was given to Nick Anderson. It's not like it was a game 7, and the championship is on the line. Magic got swept. It was talented youth vs Experience.
