Kenny Smith (23pts/9asts/7threes) vs. Magic ('95 Finals, Game 1)

  • The game which should be remembered because of Kenny Smith, not because of Nick Anderson. The Jet started the game off slowly as did his Houston team and was hesitant to take the looks he had at he basket. But Kenny ended up being the one to continue a run started by Clyde Drexler as The Jet scored 15 points in the third quarter and knocked down his seventh three (the NBA Finals record of that time) for the 23rd point of his that forced the overtime. June 7, 1995.

    it's a little annoying when the younger generation just think of kenny as a funny guy who's all talk. the guy wasn't an all-star or anything but he was a legit baller. This is probably his best game, but it was actually past his prime. Kenny would average close to 20 points a game, and he was LIGHTNING quick on the fast break. When he took off on the open court, he made MJ look slow. I loved the way "the jet" took off on the fast break and just exploded for a dunk.

    In a single season, as a #6 seed, beating a league MVP and sweeping a Magic team that eliminated Jordan and the Bulls. That 95 Rockets team had the greatest playoff run in NBA history! lead by the Greatest Center to ever play the game. What OLAJUWON did in those 95 playoff will never be done again by any individual player. He completely destroyed every player he went up against. I mean dominated them. I think it was to promote scoring or something, if I remember correctly scoring went down during the nineties. Conspiracy theorists also suggest that it was to help Jordan because he was a great mid-range guy but only mediocre from far out, I'm thinking he averaged around 33% for his career from downtown (respectable, but not great). However he had a much better 3pt% during those three years.

      No, the 3 pt line actually got closer during the 2000's

      +Grumpy Cat no it didn't. It was shortened from 94 to 97 to promote scoring.

      Yeah, started in 1994-95 to 1996-97 NBA shortening the line distance from 23 ft 9 inch to 22 ft.

    Kenny Smith is so annoying as a commentator. I think sometimes we forget he was a solid player. Everyone says he rode Hakeem’s coattail But it’s clearly natural. Gosh he’s so annoying but I have to give him credit.

    Is this the first time that a key role player made noise in the Finals because of his barrage of threes? (Jordan really was the first guy who made noise because of his threes in the Finals against Portland, but i don't think he's a role player hahaha)

      @@yoitsSmitty2004 Both teams in 95 had different lineups so the matchups would be a little different. The original Rockets team prior to Drexler joining had a stronger forward lineup overall Grant, Pippen, and Kukoc wouldn't really have much of a matchup advantage there tbh with Thorpe, Horry, and Herrera all having the versatility to matchup with them. As a matter of fact the Rockets would've been the one team that would exploit Kukoc's lack of physicality by making him play defense.
      In 95 both Grant and Thorpe were gone so neither team had a standard PF, however comparing Kukoc and Horry I still give the edge to the Rockets because Horry did show he could effectively play the PF position throughout the playoffs.

    brian hill should have been fired at halftime! why are you constantly double and triple teaming Hakeem? 🤦‍♂️

    • @ChrisM07
      @ChrisM07 Рік тому +1

      He tried using the single coverage idea in G2, it backfired with the Magic falling behind 20+ by halftime. That was the dilemma playing against the Rockets the best way to defend them was by doubling at times and hoping the shooters aren't consistently hitting from outside.

      Not only would Olajuwon score, but he'd get your team im foul trpuble. Also, zone defense was not legal back then. If you doubled or tripled team, you could not waffle in between or it was a a technical foul.
