I got my padi diving certification in Panama when I was 18 a few years ago. One of the dives was through a sunken ship, and there was a nurse shark that lived there. Inside the cabin swimming through and I was like 5 feet over the shark and it moved and spooked me lol. Being in a confined space over a shark is spooky but it was pretty docile

Maybe because it was surrounded by the chum he was throwing in the water, something solid to grab.
I do agree that sharks are smarter than we give them credit for. Was really surprised to hear about a lemon shark I think it was that was trying to get a divers attention, he was very experienced and realised the shark was looking for help and he pulled out a big hook that was coming out through it's belly. Once the object was out the shark swam off.
That surprised me because I thought it was only mammals and birds that asked for help.

The one constant in all sharks are their unpredictability. Makos seem to get the least coverage but their speed and raw power are formidable, not to mention a sort of low level intelligence if there is such a thing in sharks. Hal mentioning how the guy snorkeling in the Bahamas got hit hard in the chest by one and slashed him at the same time makes me think they use their pointed snouts to stun before turning on a dime mouth wide to come at you again.

On the Island of Kauai in Hawaii, some friends at work were "talking story," about a Filipino diver that had a stringer of fish hanging from his side, when a large Mako, aggressively, attempted to take his stringer of fish. The diver, who had already stressed his three-pronged paralyzer, shot the Mako right in his gills! They were in awe and said that they would never dive with that guy because they thought he should have dropped his stringer of fish to lure away the shark. I said, "I would always dive with a diver that understood sharks like that guy." He not only understood Mako Sharks, but he also got to keep his "hard-earned fish."

@@davelister2961 There don’t seem to be a lot of instances of makos or bronze whalers trying to actually eat someone. Bronze whalers have a few fatalities but I’m not aware of any consumptions. Makos might make multiple bites, but that’s because they have bad tempers and are extremely aggressive once something irritates them. They’re more geared for fish eating. Oceanic white tips will definitely try to eat you. They might appear docile for a while, but they’re looking for any sign of weakness. You turn your back and you’re likely to be attacked. Blues almost never attack healthy humans unless they’re baited, and are one of the easier sharks to fight off because of that long thin snout and slender build. But they have been known to eat people who are stranded at sea and/or injured, as they are weakened and unable to really fight back.

They kind of have a look eye wise to me like an Oceanic White Tip and even the color of them is just creepy to me. I don’t know how to explain it, maybe because of that almost bronze color of that huge Sand Tiger I saw that time feet away. Your right about the shock too Hal, but I never paddled so fast in my life on a Surf board as that instinct definitely kicks in, but then sitting on the beach and thinking about it afterwards. Even going to bed that night and closing my eyes I’d see that and be like sleep is overrated 😂. I don’t care nothing still was crazy freaky as that Great Hammerhead in the Keys that time, and here I was actually in a BOAT in that situation! 😂

Hey Hal, will be praying your family in Florida is OK! I've had two encounters with a sand tiger in DelaWHERE. Both surfing, of course ;-) Once was bodyboarding at Bethany beach, Delaware. I was waiting for a set next to the manager of the Bethany Beach Surf Shop, in the 80's. He qiuetly told me there's a tige" shark 10 yards away... but to stay still, don't panic. Good advice, but the people who didn't know and had taken waves on the previous set were paddling out fast, hooting and hollering, not knowing the danger nearby. I scored a wave and stayed on shore! Interesting, the shark showed perfect Tiger Shark stripes, which Sand Tigers don't have. Ne neck was on the south side of the Indian River Inlet. I was wading back out, one foot hit it, and I had to step up with the other foot, about 2 feet. It took off, but tail-slapped me enough to scare the blazes out of me! Last year we were with my young nephew at Holts Island about 1/2 mile from the Indian River Inlet, and saw small sharks right by the shore. Not sure what type, but I never knew we are supposed to have bull sharks here also. Granted, that end of the river IS pretty brackish, so could have been anything.

It is so interesting and funny when you said you would be in shock if you saw a shark! I would be too. Can't wait for the next show!

Enjoyed the film of the marina, looks nice but I'm with Hal, no way am I jumping in there ! I don't even want those tarpon near me, but showing us where attacks happened was really interesting - and would 100% keep me out of the water

I saw a tarpon feeding when I was on Grand Cayman Island, and they are really scary when they’re in a frenzy. They’re huge, too. Some of them were at least 6’ long, and there were hundreds of them. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in the water around those fish.

Oh, this is a good one! Love the marina shark and lighthouse footage!! Read it dates back to 1873. Do I see the Andrea Gail docked there? (Just kiddin') Interesting and terrifying when you touched on bite forces. Thanks for compiling and breaking down the attack stats. Really attractive golf shirt.

I like how you are doing this Hal , by analyzing the numbers , math doesn't lie. With something like shark attacks there are always going to be variables but by looking at it with this approach you will see patterns emerge with a good sample size.

I love your stats & keep up the good work Hal!!! I started working as a deckhand at age 14, and went on till I was 30 on tuna/albacore charters out of San Diego and fished mainly in Baja waters & out 40-80 miles from shore. So, back in the mid seventies when I started, I would always see a slew of blue sharks and the occasional hammerhead up to 12’-14’ . So, I got the bright idea last spring (age61) to go back working on boats again, landed a job as a cook on an 80’, 25 passenger charter boat. 3 months at sea and fishing 24/7 for bluefin tuna, I can count on one hand how many sharks I saw. 40 years ago you’d have to shake ‘em off with a stick or shoot them or whatever, they were a nuisance. Not going down to the objective road of politics but just making note that sharks off Baja have must of declined by at least 95%. Not a tree hugger, not some crazed green peace or sea Shepard 6 by any means but just an observation of 40+ years on the water. My guess is shark fin soup demand in Asia???

Hi Hal. Your stats may lean more towards fatalities because severe or fatal attacks are FAR more likely to be reported in the media than less dramatic incidents.

Hey Hal, Andrew from south London (the UK London) back again with more crucial comment ... and one thing I can tell you about us Londoners - we love looking at you, even before you starting pimping your torso with your fab merchandise. However, what a stellar surprise to find you location filming at Bud and Mary's Marina, with that knockout footage of tarpon and nurse sharks - giant nurse sharks - cruising around under the moorings - literally under your nose. I would love more such sequences (though, obvs, not at the expense of footage of your own fine-featured fizzog). ALSO - and I am bigly apologetic if you have mentioned this before - re that fab merch of yours, do you have anything bearing your signature catchphrase 'An attack, but not an attempt to predate'. We south Londoners are just so digging that motto. Personally, I think you could construct one smash-hit rap around that anthem. A stadium full of Hal's Angels bellowing it back acha ... I hope I'm on the guest list!

About the guy who got bit while chumming... That story shoulda been a "What were you thinking" segment! Its got THREE ingredients in the recipe for a dumb accident.
    1) chumming for sharks with your feet in the water
    2) limited mobility due to the stroke
    3) prior attackS- he should have known better

    • @bluemarlin8138
      @bluemarlin8138 2 роки тому

Also, didn’t he see the shark once, then left his foot dangling in the water while still chumming, knowing that he couldn’t react quickly if the shark returned?

These are common when diving around the southern uk, as are blue sharks, the occasional great white gets seen, the amount in the waters baffles me why attacks are almost non existent at beaches, sure they go for divers, but they can be seen, but with the temp of the water rising, matter of time.

Last i saw in 92, just 15 years after Thorson proved they were there, locals were out trying to catch one to prove not a myth. According to Thorson when asked where they went he claims they were all killed off by Finners at the mouth of the san juan. And nobody shows a bull shark ever in the lake. Some of the local stories come from boats being knocked by large fish. If bulls were in there, they would have been caught . Is not a big lake

Hi Hal , love knowing you do your research and find the most knowledgeable. After watching years of people that watch sharks . The ones that seem like attackers are the Bull because they come in 3s or 4s and will attack and attack the boat to get you but I never thought maybe they edit the film to only show them being so aggressive but they could be throwing food on hooks . I mean with these people getting paid for great film who knows ??
