@@BarbieinawheelchairI’m so sorry I meant ”service dog” this will be my first one and it feels like my last best hope to have any life outside this bedroom. He/she (I don’t know yet) will help me with so many things from getting up and to bed and medicine on time to alerting heart problems to picking up stuff dropped mobility and even ptsd these dogs are incredible. I don’t know where you live but the place I’m wort with is called Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities (ECAD) they’re in CT. The process takes years. Training a dog takes average of 1-1/2 to 2 years. They’re non profit and help fundraising they are the real deal. It is daunting I can’t lie. But if you want I can keep you posted.
I know isolation. People’s lives go on fine without me as well and it is pretty crushing. But you are F$cking WORTH IT My god we need people like you and me showing that we’re not dead yet and will not give up. I’m so sorry family and friends get compassion fatigue or just don’t know how to deal with disability. I hope someday to go to schools and show people that I’m just like them regardless of my slurred speech or riding on wheels or whatever.
I believe in you. Regardless of dog being a help or not you’re here so consequently you belong and I believe there is so much ahead for you you can’t believe it but it’s true.

Hi, so sorry to hear about your situation. I was paralyzed from the neck down in the 80ies. I've had 4 surgeries on my neck, and 2 very recent back surgeries. I don't know your situation, but never give up. keep your mind sharp, reach out to trusted friends and other resources. I can walk, run, and even dance now. I find the shark attack stories and your insight very interesting, but your personal stories always crack me up. Yeah or when people swim with sharks in controlled environments and act like sharks are friendly. Its the one shark that thinks you’re vulnerable and you don’t see that gets you.
I don’t care if some crazy loon says she’s been swimming with sharks all her life and even has one 14ft Tiger she’s known for 20 years! A bloody great tiger shark, that “comes around her boat, recognises it, and wants *contact and attention* and regularly swims around her diving ladder” - he’s waiting for the day he can get her skinny butt in his mouth and down his throat - he’s no “friend looking for a petting or a swim buddy” he’s watching his dinner fattening up - they drive me mad when they claim to know what a shark is thinking and it’s not food! What lunacy - the records are full of people like this; there should be a new award like the Darwin only it should be the Steve Irwin award, for all those “friends” of apex predators that end up dying horrible death’s due to complacency and this notion that the animal just wants to play - they do, but they call it “Patiently waitin’ on dinner” starring Crocs, Bears, Sharks, Big Cats and Snakes.

We just had a fatal shark attack here in South australia on Tuesday on our West Coast in Streaky Bay between 13- 14-foot great white shark took him whole....

Love your fishing story with your dad, you both had tons of patience that day because no way could I have dealt with problem after problem and still go fishing. Its too funny how literally every part of this trip, from the vehicle to get there, the spot, the tackle and poles, the fish, the boat, everything, I bet you were exhausted after that, I am exhausted just hearing about it!!! That trip will end up being one of the best memories between your father and you.
When I was younger, I put my boat in the water and forgot to plug it and didn’t realize until I saw water in the back of my boat, so basically I was sinking and didn’t know.

Your vocal delivery sounds professional for sure now!.Thank you for your content! Amazing that the surfer was able to stay on the board during that first large bite!
Some folks will read/listen to your soliloquy and say things like ‘a white shark wouldn’t do that’. I surfed up and down California, from Blacks beach, thru Sunset and Huntington Beach, San Onofre, Rincon, Half Moon Bay up to Santa Cruz. The reality is sharks have zero conscience.
If I had the knowledge from your show back then or read it somewhere (I am sure I have being grazed by countless sharks)) I don’t think I would have continued surfing as much. Might not have being blasted by a GW during ‘70s thru 90’s but have had tons of curious dolphins surfing waves in front of me 3-6 at a time. I used to think that if there are dolphins around you you’re safe-I’ve learned since then that dolphins and sharks share the same waters and usually just ignore each other and frankly if there are dolphins in the vicinity there are also sharks just as close.
The Whites are much bigger now in Southern Ca, I don’t think they compare in size to Whites around the Farralon Islands but 10-12ft white sharks are common in S. Cal now due to breeding patterns, changing ocean currents.
The sheer number of drones over the ocean now enables humans to at least see them.
Any shark is dangerous and unpredictable though some people attempt to predict what causes white attacks-it is not an exact science. There was even an attack by a large Hammerhead in Malibu a while ago. I love the Ocean and pretty much body surfed/surfed all along Southern California. Attempting to predict what makes a GW attack is not a good idea. No animal follows what humans think they “should” do, except if there is a grizzly around you, you’re pretty much toast.. 😊My best
Two main reasons for more white sharks in SoCal. First, more food, as seal/sea lion populations have grown. Second, white sharks have been protected for almost 30 years now. They’re living a lot longer on average and therefore more sharks are making it to breeding age. And due to declining tuna populations, sharks may be more inclined to stay near shore to hunt seals. So it’s a greater number of white sharks, possibly in a smaller area. I suspect Southern Cali was always a breeding area, but we just didn’t know it due to low white shark numbers and to the fact that there weren’t any camera drones letting us know they were there. Drones really have changed everything.

My personal opinion as to why more “violent” attacks or predations happen more often in places like Australia and South Africa compared to the US, is because the food chain in those locations are more competitive and the sharks are less likely to get a second chance if they miss the first strike.
Here in the US we have the big three: whites, bulls, and tigers, but bulls and tigers I believe are less common in California compared to the East Coast, while whites have just started making a comeback over the last 2-3 decades on the East Coast.
However, in Australia there seems to be a good size population of all 3, but they also have to compete for the same or a similar food source with many other top predators like orcas, dolphins, crocodiles,other shark species, etc. more so than in the US, and they all eat each other. Plus in Australia (this goes for the Mediterranean too), tuna makes up a larger part of the white shark diet, which requires a strike hard and fast and ask questions later strategy. Since they’re less likely to get a second chance at a meal and they’re more likely to become a meal themselves, survival in Australia demands more aggressive and opportunistic behavior compared to the US.
As far as South Africa goes, obviously you got all the seals in False Bay drawing a lot of great whites in, which makes it a highly competitive food chain in one tightly packed location. I think the success rate of whites on seals in False Bay is around 50%. So a 50% success rate in a tightly packed predator rich environment means animals are more likely to go hungry and be pressured to seek other food sources. I’m sure geography of the ocean floor and coral reefs in the different location plays a role too, but I don’t know enough about that to factor it in.

@@mnj640 I think you may have miss understood the point I was trying to make. My point was that violent attacks in Australia and South Africa are more common compared to the US, because the food chains in Australia and South Africa have more apex predators competing for food compared to the US. Crocs are certainly not the sole reason in Australia’s case. However, they are a piece of the overall puzzle, even if it is a small piece. Cheers.

Being in the ocean at 9:00 am is something i can't even imagine. I'd rather be sitting at my kitchen window sipping on a hot cup of Sumatra and watching a Blue Jay eating a peanut. But i love shark stories!
The only attack I can think of that the body was never found (in California) was Peter Savino, who was attacked and carried of in 1957 by what is suspected to have been a large great white shark, off of San Luis Obispo.
Ralph Collier commented on why Cali white sharks don't seem to eat their victims: he mentioned that they're 'spoiled' by those plump elephant seals; SA and Oz (AND the Med, apparently) have seals but not huge colonies of plus size pinnipeds (it also explained why white sharks on the US West Coast are substantially heavier and bulkier than same sized white sharks 'elsewhere'), so they are more inclined to make meals out of 'targets of opportunity'. In the Med, white sharks seem to have as stomach contents, things like Tuna, Dolphins, other sharks and sea turtles.
In the Med we don't get many Great White attacks but when they do they seem to be almost always fatal. I've always wondered why. Mostly the Adriatic/former Yugoslavia & Italy/Sicily.

Not many tiger and bull sharks to compete with for same food source on the West Coast, so they have plenty of seals and sea lions to themselves. If they were more hungry, more people would be consumed. The whole country of Australia is surrounded by ocean with GWs, but fewer seals and lots of competition with tigers and bulls, cause them to eat a larger variety of food.

I love the sea but I'm lucky enough to now live in Cyprus, where the last recorded shark attack was in 1901. It was also at the opposite end of the island. I STILL keep constantly aware at all times, especially when I take my mum along.

With all the little mishaps I would start to ponder whether or not I was meant to be fishing though. My last fishing trip at night involved two huge UFOs that suddenly appeared, began sparkling colors, then disappeared, and I had nearly 7 hours of missing time. That was in 1999. I will never go fishing anywhere alone again and I don`t think you could give me enough whiskey to go out in a boat at night in Louisiana again.

We had another shark attack fatality in South Australia 29/12/23, Khia Cowley at Ethel Beach on the Yorke Peninsula. That's 3 shark attack fatalities this year just in South Australia

I really enjoy your channel and I enjoy the stories. This is a story that my long passed away father in law told me. Probably sixty or seventy years ago he and his dad went fishing at a lake in central Oregon. His dad backed the boat into the water and my father in law (we will call him Larry) pushed the boat off the trailer and tied a half hitch into the back of the trailer, he walked up the trailer and got the gas can out of the pickup and walked back to put gas in the motor. As he was bent over pouring gas in his father drives away to park it, Larry falls over the motor with his face nearly in the dirt and struggles to get stood up, just as he does so his father stops and he falls over backwards and hits his head on the bench seat of the boat. As he is dazed and lying on his back his father walks up and says what are you doing… what the hell happened? Larry says you figure it out.

Love the quizzical look on the little girl's face in "To The Beach" flash photo during your presentation. Have never gone back in the water after I had to go back in to save my son's friend when a shark was beelining for him on our final body surf run of the day. Happy with all the decades in the ocean before that I am even still living.
Hi Hal, great videos. I have to think just about every attack is an 'attempt to predate', because that's exactly why they are doing this. That's what they do. They then decide whether to continue or not! I respectfully believe this. They examine or explore things w their mouth, I get that, but the only reason they do that is because they are thinking of eating something. Unless terririotallity is a thing! I love your work brother 👊 P.S. I do absolutely agree with smaller or baby shark attacks not knowing..I was thinking of the big guys. Even the huge guys that hit and are gone... they're not really gone. Probably more patient than we expect possibly? Just an idea...
Well… predate is to consume. Sometimes, sharks attack just to remove something from their territory; they have no intention to consume.
I agree, territoriality in sharks makes no sense, and there isn’t any data to prove that there is such a thing. They don’t have specific territories. There is tons of footage of sharks around people going about their business, ignoring them. Not all attacks need to culminate in predation. It could be play hunting. They are opportunistic and cautious, and they can certainly tell we are not their usual prey, but if they need, they will eat us…
There are many forms of "territoriality"; it doesn't always mean fixed territories. If a shark is hunting in a productive area, courting/mating, birthing, etc they may be territorial to drive others away. As Hal always says this often manifests in attacking a board or a kayak @@marsrii4372

I love your work Hal and I have a request; I'd like to see you cover the case of Willie Thomiason, a nine year old that was killed here in Vero Beach Florida in 1998 by what was thought to be a six foot tiger shark. Speaking of Vero beach, it has always been assumed here that Karen Stei was injured by a tiger shark due to the bite forensics and the presence of sea turtles.Thanks for listening and keep up the good work.

Some nights I go and listen to it just because its so entertaining.. Your stories about you and your father are hilarious, and remind me of my deceased father, he was a character. For my graduation in 1980 he bought me a car (no name) I swear I'd never seen anything like it and I'm a car enthusiast. Maybe from the1950's. This car had a push button starter, and tires like the ones you described, we called them MAYPOPS and we called the car a HOOPTIE. 😆😆😆Thanks for sharing and bringing back memories.
