  • The flexor hallucis longus can be the culprit in a variety of dysfunctions as it refers into so many places in the leg and foot. You can find it referring into the base of the toe, the Achilles tendon, the medial portion of the ankle, and in the back of the knee.
Its origin is in the lower two-thirds of the posterior fibula and insertion is at the base of the first distal phalanx. The trigger point is just above the trigger point for the soleus in the musculotendinous junction.
Accessing the trigger point can be a bit tricky. You will need to sink down and move through the gastro and the lateral head of the soleus.

I feel acute pain like a deep cut with enough pressure at this trigger point at at the great toe area where the fhl ends with the same deep cut feeling.

I've had what seems to be this for 6 months now. At first I thought it was AT but all scans show the AT as healthy. It's in the area you describe but pain refers to the AT as you also mentioned in the video. I'm seeing a person to massage it and continuing with calf exercises but it has affected my running for some time now. How long should this take to heal and what is the best way to get rid of it? Thanks.

I get my pain just medial to ankle but noticed the other day when it was really firing was going down into my great toe. Funny because it's been bothering me for over a year and they've been treating me foe posterior tibialis tendinitis...ugh
