This video was made about 5 years ago and has nothing to do with the current Israel/Palestine conflict. Islam deserving criticism does not justify the deaths of thousands of Palestinian civilians. Hamas and their violence are horrible and should be stopped. This is no excuse to kill people who have committed no violence, as the Israeli military is doing now.

The complication when trying to analyze the state of freedom in situations like this is when you have a different moral framework from the other person.
Most would not consider it a lack of freedom to not be allowed to do things that are immoral. An extreme example would be a person from a culture that condones cannibalism would say that western society is not free since we are not allowed to choose whether we want to be a cannibal.
So then, this necessitates changing the discourse to validating which moral framework is correct.
To be clear though, I believe the moral framework, as well as the lack of freedom (as measured by the Judeo-Christian moral framework prevalent in the west), is wrong.

@@benjaminkesler5245 I say that's a very good point. I believe it is for this exact reason why the Bible says that God placed the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil "in the middle of the garden". It was NOT to tempt Adam and Eve but rather to allow them (and by extension, all humans) to exercise their freedom to say "Yes" to God's command of avoiding it.

The forbidden tree has to be prominently placed and powerfully tempting for thêre to be any value in resisting it. You just prefer your apologistic, euphemistic phraseology. It's all folklore/pârable/myth anyway, so tell it objectively.
The story never made symbolic, or of course literal, sênse in that we were originally created in the image of god without the knowledge of goôd and evil. Why should that be withheld and how much could we be in his image not knowing the difference?
Was Satan or the other angels given the same prohibition? Apparently they knew good from evil somehow or those who rebelled would not have been held responsible and damned to hell. Are we to learn god unfairly punishes all humanity for the disobedience of the first two? Are we to believe we were punished because the first two were tempted by wanting to be more like god? Are we to believe we all inherited the knowledge of good and evil as well as the punishment for acquiring it? If so, why is our cultural environment more powerful than our inherited ability in this regard?

She escaped and has been living in my country peacefully for 15 years. She _hates_ it when people say, "It's not because of Islam, your father was just insane."
Everything he did, he did _because_ of Islam. He was extremely pious and believed he was doing Allah's will. He prayed everyday and held deeply religious beliefs. Without Islam, he wouldn't have acted the way he did. We can't just pretend Islam isn't a negative influence to some people.

Again, an atheist would never kill anyone _in the name_ of atheism. There's no such thing. Atheism isn't a religion that asks anything of you. No atheist has ever killed anyone _in the name_ of atheism. Anything they do has _nothing to do_ with atheism. This is a non-argument.
If you do something bad because of something I say, that also wouldn't be my fault because I never told you to do anything bad. In fact, I'll go ahead and tell you _not_ to do anything bad. Islam, on the other hand, is a religion that tells people to do all sorts of awful things. It's full of passages that can easily/are easily interpreted to mean something bad.
Again, without Islam or his devotion to Allah, my friend's father never would've done what he did. In contrast, it was an atheist who helped her escape her country; who, by the way, would be executed if anyone in his country found out he's secretly an atheist.

I had a muslim colleague, who was devout, observed prayers and Ramadan, but who also insisted on fitting in with the country he was living in. He found a normal girlfriend (muslim but progressive and no head scarf), openly drank alcohol from time to time (many of them do, but in private), and was mostly interesting in doing well in his work, buying a house, starting a family, and enjoying the freedoms we have in this country. Guess what: he got into a ton of trouble, his "friends" deserted him, his nephews gave him shit and even tried to move in with him to keep an eye on him, he fell out with his parents; basically he was excommunicated. He persisted though, and thankfully made up with most of his family eventually.

Pretty bizarre demonization of the other side. If you asked a progressive what they think about the actual practices listed in the Quran, they’d say it’s abhorrent and reactionary. If you asked a progressive what they think about the practices listed in the Old Testament, (such as the slave beating or the genocides for instance), they’d say the same.
If you asked a progressive whether _either_ group should be repressed for their religious identity, they would say no. Problem is, a lot of Christians view criticism of Christianity, or pushback against Christian oppression, as oppression even though they’re by far the most politically dominant religious in the US. And a lot of right-wingers use “Muslim” as short-hand for Arabs.
Making it into an us-versus-them issue is missing the point. Religions are ALL garbage ideologies.

As a woman raised as a conservative Christian, I can absolutely agree that oppressed women very seldom ever realize that they even ARE oppressed; I sure as hell didn't. If you had asked me at 18 if I felt oppressed by my religion, I'd have said, "Nope! I'm doing it all for God!" Fast forward a few years when I'd been married off for religious purposes and my husband was abusing me, even trying to kill me on multiple occasions, and I was begging my family for help, they told me that it was God's will and that I couldn't leave him because I was married to him. If he killed me, it would've been justified in their eyes. That's the point at which I began to realize that I *had* been oppressed all of those years but I didn't know it because I didn't know any other life than that. It wasn't until my life was on the line and I was being forsaken by my own family that I began to realize that I never had much of a choice until then. If I didn't choose what they told me God wanted for me and what my church preached, I would be shamed and convinced I would suffer for eternity for it. That isn't much of a choice, and especially for a young girl who had no power and no knowledge that life *could* be any other way, it was potentially a death sentence. I was extremely lucky to get out of that marriage when I did because he did almost kill me repeatedly. It wasn't until I was finally free of him and away from my family that I began to see things differently and realized that I had the power to choose my own life. I also began to realize that the oppressive way I was raised and made to believe the world was had seriously damaged my life. I looked at the women in my family and began to see the same things I was enduring: long-term domestic abuse, repression, oppression, fear, anxiety, etc. only they didn't talk about it. Every time it came up, it was, "God will make a way!" and, "God will heal him!" When I finally began to see things for what they were, I realized that I was in for a lifetime of misery just the same as my family (whether or not they are willing to admit it) and the biggest thing I had been convinced of, i.e. that choosing a pious life would give me a more fulfilling life free of suffering, was a lie, I knew I had to break free or it would kill me, just like my ex-husband. It's been years that I've been out of that world and though it's definitely put a strain on my relationship with my family, I've come to find that I have more hope than I ever did then. I have a good life where I'm free to make my own decisions, it's taken me years to learn how to date (I was married off so young that I never actually dated prior to getting married) and I now have a wonderful, loving boyfriend who puts *no* expectations on me, nor ever tries to control me, who comes from a wonderful, secular family who has shown me more compassion and has been more welcoming than my family ever was. My family still says they're "praying for me," and "hope that I see the light someday," and maybe their prayers have been answered because I *do* see the light, and it's very, very far from them. I know that for some people, it's easier to just be quiet and do as you're told, especially when you've never held any power in your entire life, but I was not one of those people, and I wasn't so lucky as to be given a gentle, peaceful existence. I was thrown to the dogs and was left to die by those who promised me that this way of life would bring me peace and fulfillment. I never knew peace, nor fulfillment, until I was finally free. I resent anybody who raises their daughters the same way. I never want anyone to live and suffer the way I did. I don't want another young girl to think that her life is over before it's even begun because of a God who supposedly "loves" them, yet justifies their demise at the hands of their abuser. I don't know if I believe in a God or not, but if there is one, then they're nothing like that.

I'm so glad you're out of that, thousands of women don't make it. Although luckily neither I nor my loved ones have suffered such degree of violence, it's a very sensitive topic for me. Here in Mexico, it's so common that the legal term "femicidio/feminicidio" (femicide) was introduced to classify those cases specifically.
I will never forget an audio of a woman who was teaching an English class through Zoom (that's how it got recorded) when suddenly her husband arrives, insults her and is about to hit her while she cries and asks if she can turn the session off first... Only remembering it makes me tear up.
Many women choose to stay in such horrible, life-threatening situations because the social and psychological pressure not to leave the marriage is incredibly strong. I'm happy to see newer generations are a lot more sensitive about the topic, but looking at people still being extremely sexist and even justifying violence makes my blood boil. They have no idea what that kind of terror feels like.
I wish you a lot of success, happiness and most importantly, safety! Stay strong ❤

That is certainly the reality for some women growing up in conservative religious contexts. My condoleances for it happening to you. I have to ask though, why is this relevant for the topic at hand? Does this kind of oppression that you aren't aware of imply that your freedom to choose should be taken away, and the choice be made for you by someone who knows better? Should someone in the situation you were in be forcibly removed from that situation, and who should be the judge of that?
These are not meaningless hypotheticals, there are real people out there who advocate restricting the freedom of Muslim women to e.g. choose what they wear, on the basis of some variant of "if they do it out of their own choice it's only because they're indoctrinated, and thus it doesn't count".

Judaism is an interesting case for an Abrahamic religion, given its traditional emphasis LESS on "correct beliefs" and more on correct actions. By contrast, Christianity and Islam have been two of the most dogmatic religions in world history when it comes to emphasizing correct beliefs. So much so that most people in the world now seem to define religion primarily as a belief system. But any student of religious studies (which looks at all religions as a human phenomenon) can tell you, this is actually an incorrect, biased view.
What's most interesting about this, however, is that these two religions which emphasize dogma most strongly - are also the two most evangelical/proselytizing religions (they constantly want to convert people) and have the worst histories of religious violence. The only difference between them in the modern world is that Islam dominates in a part of the world that is a collapsed civilization. The Ottomans held it together unnaturally for a few extra centuries, but the Arab world has been a ruin of its former glory during the Middle Ages for a long time.
Every Arab monarch, Islamist extremist, Arab nationalist, Shia theocratic radical, Baathist .. All of them are trying to recreate some piece of what they see as the glory their people have lost. And that is a dangerous idea. THIS is why modern Islam has violent tendencies. Ironically, it has everything to do with history and almost nothing to do with the Quran itself.

I am Jewish as well and it has often been a struggle to explain how Judaism is a Religion and Jewish people are an ethnic group.
I finally boiled it down to a few things:
      1. Judaism in a non prostelatizing faith, so the only new Jews are people who intentionally sought out to be converted. I may be wrong but I think forced conversions ended in the days of Jacob. This resulted in highly insular communities over generations.
      2. Over time as the Diaspora spread and people converted to the new faith of the new arrivals the same patterns began of insular communities forming around the faith.
      3. So now we have certain Ethnic groups that have practiced Judaism in their part of the world for centuries and became known in those areas as "the Jews".
SO are Jews a monolithic people, not really, but the ethnic communities around the world rooted in Judaism are Jews.

Yep, this is a great problem in liberalism and in the left. Our camp is abandoning secularism, when secularism is a fundamental pilar of liberal or socialist worldview. This error is costing us a lot of support.
I personally think that liberalism is becoming other thing, a post-liberalism, Tipos de tradução because liberal universalist ideals are being lost and giving way to a patchwork of values based on competing identities. In a way, it is a consequence of neoliberalism, transforming identity into a commodity or a VIP area, where people consume it to be part of a group and the values of the particular group are more important than any universalist ideal. This has to do with post-modernity itself, obviously. However, on the other hand, this has also led to the collapse of left-wing politics, because people can no longer show solidarity to build coalitions beyond their own identities. I still think that this kind of more universalist coalition politics still occurs in the United States, but in my country, the division has become very deep, people don't really care about other people's causes anymore, only their own causes. But the Islamic question is central to this new post-liberal and post-socialist (or post-progressive, to summarize) subjectivity: Islam represents a challenge to modernity - which became a problem for romantic progressivism - and also became a continuity of the anti-colonial struggle. The old progressive ideals of secularism, tolerance, democracy, freedom, equality, female emancipation, etc., cease to be ideals for everyone, and become "another facet of colonialism", and for "post-progressivism", the last act of iconoclasm against our social order, is no longer attacking Christianity and conservative values, but attacking modernity itself, completely giving up its unfinished project to embrace a form of "political spirituality" (to use the term that Foucault used to praise the Iranian Islamic revolution). In this way, post-progressism sees the reaffirmation of any reactionary value as valid, as long as it is not universal. As in post-modernity, human beings desperately escape the becoming of reality (due to the condition of constant disruption of neoliberal capitalism), and become alienated in identity (maintaining identity is a form of idealistic denial of becoming - in Greek philosophy, the ontology of identity appears in Parmenides as a denial of Heraclitus' physicalist ontology based on becoming). In this way, Western radicalism, in this period, stops attacking Western traditions to attack current Western identity, but still within an identity paradigm. In this way, the deconstruction of the modern secular identity of the West becomes more important, even if this preserves all conservatism and identity-based Platonic metaphysics - which is obviously also the basis of Islam, because Islam, like Christianity, arose amid The great influence of Neoplatonic idealism, entirely based on Parmenides' metaphysics of identity. To break with this, progressivism must completely break with the ontology of identity, preserving not only materialism, but resorting to other philosophical systems that have ontologies based on becoming (such as those in East Asia), to re-embrace modernity, but without a sense of "Western identity" that the first notion of modernity still possesses (an idea that to modernize is in a way to "Westernize"). In a way, post-progressivism wants to combat Western identity, combating modernity with "political spirituality", promoting a synthesis between "West and East (in this case the Islamic world)". But this synthesis completely preserves the ontology of identity, for in reality, the Islamic world is, in some ways, like the pre-modern Western world, so that the post-progressive romantic fantasy is in fact the old reactionary desire for a return. of the traditional pre-capitalist past. The true synthesis is not with Islam, as this, despite being an "other", is not substantially different, it is in fact the similar one onto which we project our repressed characteristics. The synthesis with Islam is just a continuation of the Western tradition, which would become not only Judeo-Christian and Neoplatonic, but Judeo-Christo-Islamic and Neoplatonic. The true synthesis would occur with the complete abandonment of Neoplatonism to fully embrace the metaphysics of becoming based on the philosophies and worldviews of people truly different from the Western identity. This would not be a project against modernity, it would be taking modernity to its ultimate consequences.
Obviously orientalism is a central theme in this discussion, but obviously post-progressives are extremely orientalist, as they also see Islam as the "big other" so that it becomes the "antidote" to Western modernity. I do see that the West may radically abandon modernity in the near future, but I consider that it will survive in East Asia. So, we will have a "paradox": a traditionalist west and a modern east asia.
I believe, that unless the current reactionary and post-progressive wave is reversed in the West, that this is quite possible by the end of the century, as the current situation is leading us into a dark age. On the other hand, no matter how complex the geopolitical situation in East Asia is, there are no deeper conflicts of identity or ideology than Asian politics in general. Drastic events, such as a war or revolutions, could actually accelerate the integration of Asia, which would be in the interests of capital. Today it may seem impossible for there to be substantial changes in the Chinese regime, the Korean peninsula and Japan's status as a Western ally. However, this could change in 75 years. I truly believe that without the Neoplatonic and Abrahamic religious traditions, East Asia can advance much further as a civilization than the West, which is totally exhausted, where the appeals of modernity have faded, the vast majority want to return to a mystical past, based on religion and ethnic divisions, although on the surface it may still appear different - we know from the statistics on irreligion that the majority in this group are not truly atheists or agnostics, this group may actually tend to convert to Islam if the Islamic issue becomes the great political issue of the century for the West. This is a risk because of identity-based metaphysics: post-progressive subjectivity identifies everything that is "Western" in appearance as "bad" and therefore identifies with that which is its antithesis in appearance, that is, "political spirituality." , the Islamic world, even though in essence, both things have the same origin and in practice, they are the same thing.

The Quran on the other hand was allegedly dictated to Mohammed straight from the heavens, with some muslim movements going so far as to invalidate any version of it that isn't in the original arabic language. Therefore the Bible is going to have some problems." This is of course ridiculous however, because then it's up to the reader to choose what is in fact true and what is in fact a metaphor or a mistake. Typically this argument is by more liberal Christians though, ones who ultimately believe in and live by secular ideals but uphold the idea that God willed it into being. Praying usually equates to making things continue to be fairly good, and help me stop masturbating or something. And these people are fairly harmless so arguing with them is probably what makes some turn more extreme rather than less, because their approach is not to rock the boat by being fairly liberal in the first place.
What is scary is when you meet someone who still upholds that the bible is true even when basic concepts don't add up. And the Quran seems to be an example of preeeettttyy strong views that don't feel good in Western Modern thinking.
Also, the Christians have the advantage of Jesus, someone who basically rewrites the rule book halfway through. Therefore the old testament is taken with a pinch of salt. Perfect for those who can be Catholic and somehow have gay best friends.

I didn’t want to be islamophobic, and I finally just asked her (among other things about her perspective on religion) “How do we separate atheism/agnosticism from religious bigotry?”
She replied by pointing out the difference between religion and religious people. I can feel negative emotions towards religions, that is within my right. But the moment I start defining people solely based on my perception of their religion, I am participating in religious discrimination.

There is also the fact that 'honor killings' are a very real thing in Muslim society, especially but not only in Islamic countries. For a Muslim woman speaking out against how women are treated under Islam, or saying that she doesn't want to wear the hijab, or even reporting that she was raped (when there aren't at least four male witnesses to back her up) can be a death sentence. Not long ago a group of Hamas terrorists opened fire on a group of Gazans that was trying to evacuate to one of the safe zones designated by Israel for the people to go to where they would be safe. Hamas wouldn't let their human shields leave. Israel is doing everything they can to avoid killing civilians, but it's war. Israel will destroy Hamas. They have to unless they want another 10/7 attack. Hamas has clearly states their intention to make attacks like 10/7 over and over again. If they continue to use human shields, and they will, there will be more civilian casualties. That's war. The Nazis got a hell of a lot of German civilians killed during WW2. That's just how it works. The Nazis at least had the integrity not to use German civilians as human shields, but Hamas is worse than the Nazis ever were. They must be destroyed, and they will be. But has your pain been relieved yet? One does not need to live under islam to understand that it is a wicked and tyrannical system. But neither will any political ideology deliver humanity from the cycle of strife in which we are trapped, or deliver us from death.
I have lived six decades in a liberal society, and appreciate its benefits. But
there is no sorrow or evil which has been eliminated because of the way we do politics, which is often ugly and competitive, and definitely archaic. The fact that we enjoy peace to a greater degree than most countries has a lot to do with our geographic location, remote from major sources of geopolitical conflict.
According to the Bible, natural-born human beings are afflicted with a fatal condition from birth, from conception in fact.
(Romans 3:23) 'For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.'
(Psalm 51:5) 'Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.'
(1st John 1:8) 'If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.'
(Romans 6:23) 'For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.'
(1st Timothy 2:5) 'For there is one God, and one mediator also between God,
and men, the man Christ Jesus.'
(Romans 5:8) 'For God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.'
(Romans 10:9) '...if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.'
      ----------
Iusually recommend reading the Gospel of mark, which gives a concise play-by-play account of jesus' life, death, and Resurrection.
Of course everything I am trying to show you is completely contrary to both islam and secular humanism. But God wants you to know Him, and to relieve your pain.
      All the best.

I used to work as a pilot in the UAE, and our company had a few contracts in Saudi as well. So on occasion we would ferry aircraft back and forth. On one such trip my buddy was told on short notice. He’d just arrived from leave and brought a whole bunch of pork jerky from home, assuming he’d be in the UAE for the duration of his rotation. Pork is not banned in the UAE. He’s then told nope, you’re going to Saudi for a few months. Damn it!
So he rolls the dice and decides to bring his pork jerky with us. When the aircraft is searched upon entry, the pork jerky is dismissed as beef jerky. No worries, life is good. A few days after we arrive were informed that we need to bring another aircraft back down to the UAE, and we’ll both finish our work rotations there.
Long story short, while he certainly isn’t the first person to smuggle pork into Saudi Arabia... there is a good chance he’s the first to smuggle pork OUT of Saudi Arabia 🤣🤣🤣

I think people really underestimate hijabs and the role they play in oppressing Muslim women. It's not a harmless tradition of dress. Yes, there are bigger issues out there, but it actually plays a role in keeping women down. Much like some Christian attitudes toward modesty (especially in Mormonism), it often asserts that women are responsible for men's thoughts to some degree, just because of the way they dress. It becomes a form of victim blaming.

I've always disagreed when I hear someone say "I have no problem with anyone personally". At what point is there accountability for the ownership of one's beliefs? For an extreme example, if someone were to believe that raping children is okay, would you still say "I have no problem with them personally, I just disagree with the belief that raping children is okay'. I would say no...I definitely have a problem with them, because their beliefs are a part of who they are.

Personally, i give benefit of the doubt and assume they just worded it poorly, but i agree with what you say. A person's professed beliefs are a part of their character and should be judged as such. The point is that there are other parts to a person's character, and taking statements like that on face value is usually a bad idea (though perhaps not in the example you gave). Often times, what someone thinks they believe isn't quite what they actually believe.

At the same time when she talked to people whom she didn't know well she would not bring it up if asked saying it's her own choice because why would she mention her problems to others. It's scary to imagine how many more women suffer like this. I have a big problem with those who say that it's their own choice and we should ask muslim women first about it. Of course you would say it's your choice when your entire life you were dictated it is what you must truly want the same way as a person would learn to say that the sky is green when it's not who is living in a society that says that the sky is green and can't be other colour and in case you disagree they dismember you.

@IdleBigots You've just described Christianity in the middle ages. The problem is not islam, the problem - just as in christianity, judaism, or any other religion - is extremism. Yes, Islam is a political ideology - but much of the mideast was very liberal before the oil crisis when we invaded and destabilized every nation in the mideast, leading them into the rule of religious fundamentalism. Islam is a dangerous ideology, but the only difference between the middle ages and now is we're supplying the weapons to allow these people to murder each other rather than doing it ourselves. If we would just GTFO of the mideast, cut off the trade, they would be forced to either digress back into the stone ages or adapt to a modern world.

When I was in high school, I had friends from all walks of life and that included a friend who was Muslim. She did not wear a hijab and was even very critical of the religion's tendency to oppress women. It was she who first told me about their various beliefs and when I asked her why she didn't wear her head covering, she told me that she didn't want to wear it as it was a symbol of that oppression.
What kills me about liberals who say you cannot criticize Islam, is that they seem to forget that "radicalism" isn't just reserved for those we see as terrorists. Some every day Muslims tend to hold very similar beliefs. I can point to a few off the top of my head right now: the father who killed his two daughters in the back of his car in Texas, the parents of a Muslim girl (who just wanted to be accepted and was tormented by the fact that she was a disappointment to her parents) who killed her in Britain for becoming too Westernized. She did not wear a hijab, she talked to boys, she had a phone number from one and did not wish to be married off to someone she had never met before.
Yes, many Muslims aren't like the examples I gave but it is a sad thought that someone can be killed by their family simply for not adhering to Islamic beliefs.

If it did it wouldn't have reached the hearts and minds of 1.8 billion people. Islam has many different teachings that I don't want to force on you, but the one I will bring up for the sake of conversation. In Islam a teaching that we all learn as young children is to respect everyone no matter their religion or belief. Study before you make a statement about another's religion. P.S Yes, I am a Muslim.

@@freshforreal2302 I'm an ex Muslim. So, let me address what you have said. Islam is not a religion of peace, instead it is a religion which practices extremist and totalitarian values. You say your religion is not extremist, but at its core this is a wrong statement. The Quran is actively inciting violence against non believers. This is the part of the religion which most Muslims refuse acknowledge and or ignore or interpret it differently, but to interrupt these as anything other then hate speech is disingenuous because it cannot be interpreted any other way. Meaning that to truely call oneself a Muslim you have to also embrace these extreme ideologies. Some examples from the Quran:
“You shall be called upon to fight a mighty nation, unless they accept Islam.” [48:16]
“Whoever fights in the way of Allah, be he slain or victorious, on him we shall bestow a vast reward.” [4:74]
“Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Those who follow him are merciful to one another, but ruthless to disbelievers.” [48:29]
“Surely the vilest of animals in Allah's sight are those who disbelieve.” [8:55]
“O you who believe! Fight those of the non-Muslims who are near to you and let them find harshness in you.” [9:123]
“If anyone desires a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of the losers.” [3:85]
These are some examples of the radical ideas that the Quran teaches. So, again, it is disingenuous to say that extremist values are not part of Islam. And do not get me started on womens rights, and LGBTQ rights and how these people are represented in Islam. You said, If these extremist ideologies are present in Islam, then why don't the 1.8 billion people act like extremist? Well it's because in the modern age morality is not a concept exclusive to religion. Morality is part of society in this day in age. Since, this the case, people understand right from wrong and reject the extreme values from the Quran because they do not fit with the morality of society today. Or Muslims interpret these extreme ideology from Quran in a different way, but again you cannot interpret them in any other way because that would be disingenuous. We only see examples of extreme Islamic values in Islamic controlled countries and radicalised individuals. Finally, you say Islam reached you from young age to respect people from all beliefs and walks of life. Well I commend you for your progressive mind, but I have already showed a few quotes from the Quran that speak to the contrary. Most Muslims do not respect other beliefs but rather tolerate them, and tolerating and respecting others beliefs are 2 different things. Thank you for listening. Have a nice day.

I think that its pretty clear, some leftists in the Western world feel like they can't criticise minorities therefore they have the need to defend muslims since they are a minority here. If the same people tried defending different minorities in an ismalmic theocracy they wouldn't end well.
I often hear people complain that atheists only criticise Christianity and that they are "afraid" to go afterIslam or other religions. When it comes to me personally, I mostly criticise Christianity because I know a lot about it, I know what it's like growing up in a Christian family, I've read the Bible etc etc. But I know barely anything about Islam, so I won't talk about it because I don't want to be factually wrong. It's simple as that. I am critical of all religions, I just can't speak in detail about most of them, even though I try my best to further my knowledge.

1.Why do atheists claim that the Quran is not special? When the language in it is special and no one has been able to imitate it for centuries?
2.If we discovered that God exists, then what would be the point of living? I mean like, this is an assumption, but shouldn't the point be that we live for the afterlife and what our deeds will be? If we discovered that God exists, then what would be the purpose of life? Since all of humanity will worship and follow him there would be no point, the point is to see whether or not people will believe in God in the absence of evidence, but this is just a hypothesis.

    • @metroplexprime9901
      @metroplexprime9901 3 роки тому +16

@@jeannedarc7533 I'll have my shot at this.
For your first question, I'll explain with the help of a metaphor: Let's say I have a jar full of pennies, with a couple of quarters mixed in. Just because the few quarters are mixed in, does that mean that the whole entire jar is suddenly filled with quarters? No. Just because one aspect of a certain religious text (be it the Bible, Quran, Torah, or anything else) has something special or contains good ideas, does not suddenly legitimize the book, the religion based around its ideas, or any of the other ideas it presents.
As for the second one, we wouldn't. Simple as that. If we had concrete, hard evidence that the god of one of the world's religions existed, then there would be no real point to living except attaining the best afterlife that you can. Also, it would kind of disprove religions all together, if you think about it. Their whole goal is to believe, to hold out hope that your hero is real, cares about you, and determines your every action. God suddenly being 100% proven kind of defeats the point. But, isn't the idea of controlling your own path, your own destiny, enticing? The fact that there is no god may mean that there is no place where you keep on living after you die, but it also means that there is no supreme force judging your every action. It means that there is nothing that determines who you are and what your actions are except for you and the people around you. When there is no god, YOU are in control. You make your own choices, not based on what some distant figure would think is right, but based on what YOU think is right. You give to those in need, not because you think some overseeing god will give you brownie points in the afterlife, but because you see problems around you and you take your own step to alleviate that problem in whatever capacity you can. When you are kind to others, you don't do it with the incentive of riches after you die, you do it because you want to be an example of what you want to see in the world around you. That is what being free from a god means. It means that you have control of who you are, where you go, and what you do.

@@metroplexprime9901 As for the first response, this is ironically what I anticipated the response to be, and it's actually plausible, I concur with it, just because one facet of a religion is great, like it's language for instance, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't chastise other bad and fallacious axioms in a religion, I agree with you on the first response.
As for the second one, "Also, it would kind of disprove religions all together, if you think about it. Their whole goal is to believe, to hold out hope that your hero is real, cares about you, and determines your every action." was the cardinal message that helped me understand why we shouldn't make ignorant assumptions about an omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent, and transcendent deity but instead follow objective truths and science, and you're right we make decisions and choices based on our own selves, and not some Greek god, or Mesopotamian religion, evolution has shaped our morality, not religion. Common sense, acumen, and logic are one of the main mechanisms by which society runs itself, it isn't derived from religion, I completely agree with you, in fact I'm now an ex-Muslim and I'm an atheist now, thank you very much for the response, I really needed it, it helped me understand better mate.

I agree with most of what you said, but I want to talk a little about the last point.
It is true that we shouldn't just take muslim women's opinion when it comes to the oppression there is thanks to Islam, BUT I also think that keeping up with the direct criticisms aimed towards muslims, we won't accomplish anything, since they'll just see us as dumb biggoted westerners that should really just mind their own buisness. And honestly? I think that's fair; they've had their lifestyle for thousands of years and they won't change it just because *we* say it's wrong; they have to see for themselves that it's wrong and recognize this fact. It may be difficult, sure, but I think that's ultimately the only way muslims will change their worldview, especially when it comes to womens' rights. All we can do is show them how *we* live, and the rights women here have, and they will probably want it for themselves.
My best friend is muslim, and from Saudi Arabia too (for those who don't know, Saudi Arabia basically bases all its laws in the islamic religion and it's one of the countries with less rights for women out there). Is she opressed? Totally. Does she know? Not at all. But you know what, she *will*, and I have absolutely no doubt about it. She likes cars and wants to learn how to drive. Someday she'll realize that's still not compleatly legal in her country. She likes women and has no interest in men. Right now she says that's fine, and she'll marry a man, but I have no doubt her opinion will change once her parents find her a fiance. She likes listening to music, she likes drawing lesbian couples, and other things that are forbidden in her religion, and someday she'll realize she can't be truly happy if she keeps mindlessy supporting every idea in her religion. And that's great! That's how change happens. That's how women from Saudi Arabia have been accquiring more and more rights; it has to be their decision and their fight. All we can do is support them.

Money is also the factor behind saudi opening a Islam-law-free state for tourism

    • @sunflower-vz4du
      @sunflower-vz4du 3 роки тому +3

the only thing keeping saudi afloat is oil and mineral both of which is running out. as renewable energy is coming they know they cant keep hanging onto a sinking ship so they focus on tourism, which they know if they restrict half the population it will be difficult so hopefully there will be changes made and people will have more freedom.
      hopefully.........

it's actually very simple: we know how it feels to be discriminated and we feel empathy towards muslims.
it's not like we lived in a perfect world where reasonable people read and hear muslims talk about their experiences with the patriarchy in their culture/religion. as the youtuber himself has said many of the islamophobic comments come disguised as mere criticism against islam.
yes, islam deserves some pretty structured ciritisms as many other belief systems because of the harm the extremist sides are doing to peoples' basic human rights, but yet, we see almost everywhere a dehumanization of muslim people. context matters, it always did.

Thank you so much, you are awesome! I'm also a liberal, but I just can't with the relentless defense of Islam. I'm actually even afraid to say anything, so I keep my mouth shut. I'm not an Islamophobe, that's absolutely ridiculous. That's like saying I'm a Christianophobe. My entire family and most of my friends are Christian! I grew up Christian! Am I bigotted towards them? Of course not! I also grew up in a street where my family was one of just three non-Muslim families. I loved that neighborhood so much, I had friends everywhere within that community. Today, I'm a volunteer for refugees, 90% of whom are Muslim and they're awesome and funny people. But there are certain doctrines within Islam which I just can't believe people would support. Not even my Muslim friends support those aspects of their religion! But dare say anything against those doctrines as a non-Muslim and you're called out. Criticize the exact same aspects and doctrines of Christianity ('cuz they're extremely similar), and every liberal agrees. It's a double-standard. I'm so glad whenever I see liberals/left-leaning people who share my unpopular opinion because most of the time, it's only ever *actual* bigots who speak out.

The use of "phobe" in these contexts is a gross barbarism imo. Even those who are bigoted at muslims don't necessarily have an "irrational fear" for islam, much less those who simply criticise it. Whoever made up those words had no idea about latin, or english for that matter.

A "phobe" like someone with arachnaphobia or dread of heights irrationially panics once they see a spider or observe a high altitude and try to run in fear. Someone slaughtering people isn't running in fear.

Secondly, here's a hadith that supports killing gay people (of course I meant gay by LGBT but the word "liwat" basically meant same sex intercourse so I said lgbt), oh I forgot to mention that the hadith that says to throw them is a weak hadith, my fault, so here's the sahih hadith which basically tells them to be killed by stoning or beheading (both sides the doer and the one being done to)
الحديث عن النبي ﷺ أنه قال: من وجدتموه يعمل عمل قوم لوط، فاقتلوا الفاعل والمفعول به
Not to mention the whole sura "Lut" that told how god punished a whole village by flipping the village upside down for doing gay sex.
Here are one of the most trusted sources of Islam (ibn al qaem) talking about how ibn-sina was an athiest

Liberals, understandably, don't feel the need to criticize islam because it's not the religion engendering social issues in America, where muslims are an oppressed minority, so they naturally and understandably resort to criticizing Christianity. Liberals, of whom I am one, and a middle eastern ex-christian myself, unfortunately don't understand that islam is an actual historical expansion of Christianity. Early Christianity had countless sects, including Nestorianism (an early Christian denomination that held that Jesus was a prophet, but not god). There was also the proto-Orthodox sect (on whose basis are most of today's prominent Christian doctrines predicate). It received political power and recognition because it could successfully reach the emperor, unlike both Nestorianism and the gnostic pro-feminine Gospel-of-Mary sects, which didn't receive political power and were kind of swept under the rug and deemed "heretical" by the sect that received power. And you know, the victors write history.
The thing about Muhammad was that he met a Christian Nestorian monk named Bahira when Muhammad was 9-12 years old, and the monk told Muhammad and his uncle that Muhammad would become the great leader of the "new religion", you know, Islam, which, "coincidentally" holds exactly Nestorian beliefs. And so, Islam, at its core, is a Christian sect that was formerly rejected by those in power and that rejection seemed to backfire and spiral and mutate into the most violent Christian sect and religion (mixing with some pagan ideas, like the Kaaba stone) humanity has known. So yeah, that's what liberals just can't see. That it all has the same origin.
And there it is, ladies and gentlemen, the tasty fruits of primitive tribalism and dualism.
