- Deep Purple performing 'Wring That Neck' at the Belgian Jazz-Bilzen Festival on 22nd August 1969.
The performance features the "Mark II line-up": Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice.
This is the first known filmed live performance of the famous Mark II line up.

I'm a Strat guy, but when it comes to Ritchie Blackmore, I've always thought that his ES-335 period was probably his peak.

I don't know of course he is excellent in this video, but he is also fantastic with a Strato in 1977("Rainbow - Live in Munich 1977") and in 1995 (Stranger in Us All Tour). I just don't like the setup that Ritchie Used in the 80's. But he is the best.
The whole band were bordering genius as performers - best Brit rock band of all time. Blackmore truly was a blistering performer at the time, reall class act.
Ian Paice is so fricking underrated istg, Easily one of the greatest drummers, if not the best of his time!

The Mule is not underrated at all, he was overshadowed by Bonzo simply because the average listener could follow one easier than the other.

You are completely right...if you consider how much Bonham and Peart are famous compared to Ian you know Paice Is really underrated.

Sweep picking in 1969 he was like 15 years ahead of any other player of that era , Hendrix etc were never doing that , they could not play this fast either

Yep this is what i was telling everyone who said it wasnt invented until Paul Gilbert etc came along in the 80s , Blackmore was doing it in the late 60s He was better than Hendrix or Clapton those hacks could never play solos this fast

Ahhh what a precious pearl !!! I adore! A thousand thanks! Every time I enjoy it so much when I hear Purple jam that way ... Their instrumental improvisations are the best you can hear. I've always dreamed of a studio album of theirs consisting of only jam sessions, between the years 1969/1972 ... Here they give the best of their skills, Ian and Jon's passages are spectacular, Ritchie's solos drive me crazy, you can hear a great technical ability ... practically perfect band !! A very early Mark II show. Lovable and enjoyable as MK I was, this proved without a shadow of a doubt they made the right choice to restructure the band. If they were this tight literally weeks into a completely revamped MK II lineup, this showed what was to come.
