As it was called Mozambique drill by Cooper, it was renamed as Failure drill by LAPD in the 80's with the approval of Cooper. This is nothing but a shooting drill to work on practical accuracy with speed followed by a precision accuracy to the head. It is often described as a combat shooting technique, but it is a shooting "drill" as the name states. Very hard to find a documented failure drill being performed in the field.
Who pulled the rope attached to the stick holding up the target?
Ahem.....Tom Criuse in Collateral....enough said 😁

Nu uh! Hoping you make a video on why you don't like double tap. Good content
Maybe he thinks 2 bullets aren't enough to take out the enemy.
Great drill but as you said in real life it's never like shooting a target
Not something related to this video but is there any update on that Stag 15 tactical elite release?
I agree but its important to differentiate between a test and a concept. I see the “failure drill” utilized alot in quals. I have no problem with that, per se, as long as its just a specific drill to test a transition of two shots to a more precise shot. Like you said, its when its taught as a concept is when it gets stupid. Maybe changing the name or avoid using the term altogether. These silly things were created as a result of trying to be creative on a range with a paper adversary. As you demonstrated, the only real failure drill is keep shooting if it fails. Track the threat down and blast away until its incapacitated. The head, wherever it is, is an option only if its available.
First time I saw this in action was the first John Wick movie, back in 2003 or whenever that came out - looked super cool in the movie. I haven't practiced the drill myself for whatever reason.

Definitely more accurate to refer to it as a Transition Drill than a failure drill. Also, I question the likelihood of the threat's head being an easier target while moving than, maybe, the lower body. While it's all conjecture because I've never had to shoot someone, would a larger, more stable target like the pelvic girdle be a better option?
I thought this was originally called the “Mozambique drill,” but it was renamed by left leaners because of the implication…
Well said, as a 33yr Le, and former instructor, it makes sense. Number one rule in winning a gun fight, get hits on the threat.

Agree a FD is BS
This is probably the best 7 minutes on real world tactics I've seen. Because everyones got a drill for stuff. Bill drill. Dicken Drill, the failure/Mozambique drill of the hour today...and others.
But realistically staying on target and continuing your piping hot deliveries accurately is everything in the nightmare close quarters imminent threat of a mugger or home invader.
I don't think I can teach the failure drill anymore after this. I'll teach headshot practice for marksmanship skill improvement but...anyone taking 8-12 shots center mass no matter what they're wearing is moving, shooting back and swearing. Not waiting to get nailed between the eyes.
The "failure drill" has been a training staple at my department for 25+ years. Slowly, some of us are making inroads. Scott is a national treasure and if you're going to discount what he is teaching you, be prepared to explain why.
Nice. Even with armor, 5 to the chest is hard to function through. F the bs
