  • I used my Sony a6700 and Sigma 18-50 lens with an Infrared Photography Filter to make some practice photos. I'm getting ready for our trip to Las Vegas and Disneyland where I hope to do some Infrared work. Overall I ended up being pretty happy with these long exposure infrared Waffle House and KFC images. :)

    I have acquired a magnetic infrared filter from Maven Filters that will make this type of photography much easier moving forward.

      Thank you, Stephen! I'll also be doing some sunset street photography there I hope.

    Hey, Phil. I have a converted Canon DSLR and my tree leaves come out white, something about how IR sees photosynthesis happening in the leaves. So I am curious why the IR filter doesn't act the same. Interesting. Do you know? Thanks.

      I have seen white leaves like you describe and wondered as well while mine don’t come out that way. I am considering converting an old DSLR to infrared, but for now I’ll just use filters.

      @@PhilThach If you do make an RF convert, notice that there are different degrees to chose from. The purest is white leaves, then they get more color from there down. I chose the second level and regret it. I would rather have had white leaves.

    Nice work Phil. I’m looking forward to seeing your pics from Vegas. Been a while since I was there. Will you have time to check out the Grand Canyon?

      Thank you! I'll be doing some sunset street photography there too that I'm really looking forward to. We won't be going to the Grand Canyon this time but we will head over to Disneyland in Anaheim California for a couple of days. :)

      Infrared is a lot of fun but it can also be kind of tricky. Nailing the exposure often takes a few tries and when each shot is 20-30 seconds, that can be frustrating. I do like the look of infrared filter photography. Look for more of this on the channel soon. I just acquired a Mavin magnetic infrared filter which will be much easier to work with.

    Thanks Phil! First I’ve seen about infrared shooting. I wish you would have had the time to take one of these shots non-infrared as comparison. Maybe another time. I’d like to see the difference and also get your take on the advantages of using the filter.

      Thank you, Bruce! I do need to do that for sure. I have another infrared video already shot in the pipeline where I fail to make that comparison again. Maybe I'll remember in the infrared video after that.

    Phil, did you change red/blue channels?

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  3 місяці тому +1

      I did not swap the red and blue channels. I think that is more for color infrared processing which I don’t do.

    Phil, I don’t know if you’ve ever been to Las Vegas for photography but you need to pick an evening and ride up to the top of the Eiffel Tower at the Paris before sunset. It costs $15 (unless they’ve gone up…🤦🏻‍♂️) but worth it. You are fenced in but there are a few larger holes that you can shoot through. You can get some good shots of the strip as the sun goes down and the casino lights become prominent. 👍🏻

      Thank you! I may have to do that. We are definitely going to go to that area just to see the Bellagio fountain across the street.

      @@PhilThach the fountains are great. What impresses me there is how good the sound system is given that it’s outdoors and a very large area. The fountains are choreographed perfectly to whatever song is playing. Also go inside and look at the ceiling. It’s like an art installation. Cesar’s Palace is in that area too so, if you like photographing roman statues, that’s your place. There’s a replica of the statue of David in a hallway inside. 👍🏻

    Nice shots! Most Infrared shots i see have the tree leaves too hot, nice job..I have always wanted to do some infared photography but just haven't left the birds alone long enough to get into it :)

      Thank you! I have seen shots like that. I think those are made with converted cameras. Maybe I will convert a camera at some point. Maybe even my old D800 would be a good one to try that on. Now that I have the D850 I don't have much use for the D800 anymore.

    • @bassangler73
      @bassangler73 3 місяці тому

      @PhilThach yeah, I think your right..I have had interest in IF for years and I seen several videos with converted D800 and D810's...They seem to be the camera of choice..But if your into portraiture that D800 is golden! I think your more like me and not into it, but you might get a good price for it if you don't convert it.

    Do you plan on doing any bird photography out in Vegas?

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  3 місяці тому

      I didn’t know there was any bird photography to be done there. Maybe I should take a long lens, do you have any birding locations for me within walking distance of the strip? I don’t think I’m gonna have a car.

    • @marksak455
      @marksak455 3 місяці тому

      @@PhilThach Nothing really within walking distance of the strip unfortunately. The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve is about a 25 minute car ride away and pretty neat though. Lots of different species there compared to the east side of the country. Perhaps worth the uber/taxi ride.
