On day 12 of this horrible pain. Bulging disc in L5/s1 sciatica. Took xray and noticed my right hip is lower than my left. Working on my glutes and core and it’s starting to get better. Hip thrusts and stretches are the best thing to people. Stay away from shots, surgery, pills, or you will be going down a long road of pain. This problem can be fixed on your own with proper diet, exercise, stretching, physical therapy. I’m still in a lot of pain but it’s not debilitating now. Mornings are the worst, but you have to push through the pain. Remember, the mind is not the body. You can magnify this pain believe it or not. Quit saying you can’t get out of bed, start researching videos on UA-cam and how to get out of bed with sciatica. Flexing your core and glutes as hard as you can then use your arms to lift up helped me. Standing will be most painful but squatting to the floor and stretching out helps it subside enough to do floor stretching. Then walking through the extreme pain subsides in the morning to where it loosens up and the pain is manageable. I’m a single dad with a new puppy, I have no option but to push through it, but it is starting to get better now. I am also going to the chiropractor, still on the fence with this. It helps, but it’s temporary and can cause worse conditions if the muscles are imbalanced. You must correct the problem, you need to get stronger and some people just refuse to work out or go through the pain of exercise, in this case, you need to get mentally stronger. I hope I helped someone. Stay strong, we can get through this!!!
I was hardly able to pee! I had urine retention and pain in both legs and feet. I'm on week two and I am in agony. I have saddle numbness still and idk if I'll ever recover nerves from this!
Sometimes surgery is necessary and unless you're a medical professional that specializes in spinal care, you shouldn't tell people this is completely fixable with lifestyle change. Thats simply not true.
Suffered an L5 S1 disc bulge over 14 months ago , the pain severe could barely walk for 7 months, started to improve slightly after 10 months , then had a Nerve root block injection , now can walk and am pain free . This condition is agony. Good video , greetings from London UK 🇬🇧
I had a scan a year ago and told I had a 6mm disk protrusion on L5-S1 Did physical therapy and an injection Things were good until 5 days ago something happened and now I can't even walk and stick in bed for 5 days so far in extreme pain :(
I need help as i live in india here orthopedic are so professional that they not even reveal what the real issue is, and Physiotherapist are money oriented and dumb. If i do have any medium to discuss my issue so i can take guidance by experience person as u.
Fell at work. Have had back surgery on L4 and L5. Foot felt like it was burning so bad I actually cried. Getting ready for another soon L5 and S1. I wouldn’t wish this nerve pain on my worst enemy. Pain pills just take the edge off. Surgery soon. Godspeed.

Hello from Romania! I did an MRI and the diagnoses are these: Posterior disc protrusion at the L5-S1 level, ACCENTUATED AT THE PRE- AND INTRA-FORAMINAL LEVEL ON THE LEFT SIDE, NARROWING THE CONJUGATION OPENING AND CAUSING RADICULAR CONFLICT WITH THE S1 ROOT EMERGING FROM THE BILATERAL DURAL SAC, MORE PROMINENT ON THE LEFT SIDE. In conclusion, it is noted: Posterior disc protrusions at the L2-L3, L3-L4, L4-L5, and L5-S1 levels. I dit at the hospital, and the exercises were done in a cage: the first one involved lying on my back with one knee bent, while with the left leg, I pedaled a bicycle using a pulley and a 2 kg weight. The second exercise also used the pulley, with the same weight, but this time the right knee was bent, and the left leg was raised to the level of the right knee and then lowered. I felt better, but I don't know what exercises to do at home. Please help me!!! Thx !!!
@@happinessisdkey9811 really good now mate!!! It's 5 weeks today since the Laminectomy + fusion surgery. Very next morning the physio got me walking down the hallway in St. George private hospital. 2 night stay. Prof. Mark Sheridan (Liverpool rooms) did a top job by all accounts. Lots of soreness when laying down first few weeks, while the deep bruising in both sides of buttocks came out but all bruising gone and pain relief free for a week or more now (phew). Honestly, every day post op. feels incrementally stronger, better, more stable on my feet! 3 to 6 months for full recovery and I feel well on target. Qty 4 screws 40mm x 6.5mm securing L5 and S1 blows my mind as super heavy duty, with a metal "cage " each side to keep space for nerves etc. from being squashed again. I believe him, that I'll be stronger than before because of having the Spondylolisthesis pars defect since nappy wearing age. Apology if long-winded too much info, Cheers.
@sifatfatima8087 yes, Professor Mark Sheridan is brilliant in my opinion. I saw him at 41-43 Goulburn Street Liverpool and he did the surgery at St George Private hospital. Great results 8 weeks post operation 💪
11:34 thank you so much for such a well explained video. I have learned more from it than all the years since I was diagnosed with a grade 1 l5s1 spondy when i was 24. Im now 67. For years Ive done yoga, pilates, walked my dog daily and cycled on and off road regularly it has all helped me to keep that joint moving and strengthen the muscles supporting it. The best thing for keeping it supple through movement was horseriding. Keep it coming great job.
Outstanding Video!!!!! I damaged both my L-5 and S-1 after slipping on a puddle of Water at a major chain Store Two years ago. To this day. My Back gives me unbearable pain and sciatica. Thanks for the commentary. Wonderful !!!!!
I have this with multiple degenerative disc and a diffuse bulging dics at L4 and a bulging disc at L5 S1 and multiple ostoephyte , I literally can't sit without extreme pain, pregabalin lyrica in 100mg twice day doesn't help at all, please how do I get rid of this pain? I tried all the exercises in youtube, even at lean videos exercises did not help, it's hurting norw when I do thise exercises or stretching..please help I'm only 30
Will you describe the pain pattern perfectly well! I have been experiencing horrendous issues with a bulging disc for almost a year (we won't go into the issues) but until I was able to locate a chiropractor that focused on the spine was I able to see some relief! I also had pain that went down the right side specifically the outside of the right leg not as a nerve-shooting pain but a hurtful aching pain. I'm 68 and a very active person - working, fitness, gardening, and long-distance walking to name a few. The spastic nerve pain was awful - now understanding (by watching all your bulging disc issues and my dr.) the do's and don'ts around a bulging disc am I able to move forward. I'm not completely pain-free -- looking I think at another 3 weeks of healing, I'm in better alignment and executing the right movements to reduce the pain and keep it away. And, I'm working on the right core exercises plus leg & arm works to keep me fit. Love all your instructions - they are thorough, and insightful and you answer most of my questions as you go along! I can't thank you enough..... TY!! 💪💪
Thank you Dr. Will! Got this L5-S1 and also L4-L5 for years now and the info and rehab options are better everytime and well explained and gives us hope to face this constant agony and pain, and your content is a great example of this ✌🏅grateful!
Thank you for the excellent explanation! 34 years old and I herniated my L5 S1 disc 5 days ago. I saw a doctor who explained my situation well but your explanation provided great context!
I'm so sorry to hear about your herniated disc - I'm pleased my video was able to build upon the information your doctor gave you - I'm wishing you a speedy recovery and I hope my videos can offer guidance during your journey :)
I can't express how helpful this video series has been its been 9 months and if I knew some of these key things in the beginning it would have saved me so much mental and physical pain.I sure am thankful to have discovered these. What a help to have someone who specializes in this condition take the time to show and explain what your going through and how to get through it.
I was misdiagnosed with Fibromyalgia and have been struggling with pains down my legs for years! Went to see a Chiropractor and she told me it’s my L5 nerve irritated! I’m currently receiving therapy with her to help it and it’s working! Best thing I ever did 🥰🤞🏼
I’ve been dealing with the pain travelling all from my lower back, to my hip/bum all the way down my leg for five years now. No doctor has taken me seriously with this as I’m only 27 now with it and they basically have told me it was all in my head or that it’s “just tendinitis” and it will go away. Been to the hospital, doctors, and walk in so many times I have lost count, and no one has explained this as well as you have for me. I’ll be making sure to even use your video when I’m in the hospital next to explain to the doctors what they’re dealing with as they could use some training.
Kyrstin, i too have bulges at L4-L5 and L5-S1, my right leg is losing muscle mass, my big toe finger near thumb has shortened, my leg has shortened by 1.3 cm, i feel constant pain on sitting, any position, but doctors say it's all in my head, i feel very low on confidence,...😢😢😢 May God cure you somehow!!!
Don't bother with regular doctors...they're not good with this type of thing, especially ones at the walk-in...see a physical therapist, chiropractor, and/or spine surgeon. You need a specialist. I hope you find some relief soon!
Great video. I have three herniated discs: L5-S1, L4, L3. Was curious to understand the anatomy of the sciatica in my right leg (I’m 30). Chiro is running me through spinal decompression! Can sympathize with those who have this pain that keeps you from sleeping longer than a couple hours. Thank you Will! A lot of your videos have made sense and have substantially educated me on what’s happened to me 😁
Will, I only just discovered your channel today, and I think it is is Godsend! It's as though you met me and decided to do videos on all of my problems. I will be 70 in December, and I am suffering from horrendous sciatica, bad balance, all sorts of issues you address in your videos. I am already a big fan! Thank you.
Just received my MRI reading with an L5-S1 bulge. Thank you for this outstanding (and clear) explanation. Also just started PT today and keeping fingers crossed things will improve. Your explanation and this video is so very much appreciated.
Thank you. My masseur (treated sports injuries for 30 years) did quite a good job of showing me the L5 and the route. Of course massage is great, but it's temporary reief as is acupuncture etc. My X-ray revealed a bony outgrowth to the right of my L5 I think. But now I'm pushing for an MRI because the X-ray was for knees and hip arthritis. One physio told me 'we've only a remit to treat your hips and knees.' I was gobsmacked. Look at your skeleton man.. it's all holistic, joined up.. Sigh. The latest physio at the hospital (NHS physio not bad) has now been persuaded to pass me on to the Spinal consultant. I take about two hours to get together in the morning.. I go to exercises class aqua aerobics, pilates and yin yoga all of which I modify to suit me ( I teach yoga to oldies like me, 71, but it's so gentle and really helps me too). So far managing on one slow release ibuprofen a day, and an occasional paracetamol.. BUT I do not want to be on pain killers for ever even mild ones. I am concerned about getting older and living alone especially wnen I get a shock (I'm no scaredy cat) but someone coming round a corner at the pool area, shocked me. Normally our SNS reacts but calms down. My leg went into spasm. Dangerous. I need a diagnosis to make sure I get whatever help I might need in later life... So far all I've had are exercises to stand against a wall with a belt around the things and do squats. Great explanation and has given me more meat for my argument for an MRI. We should all learn now our body works and be able to feel into it.. and demand to be told exactly what is going on..
Thanks for this i have just buldged my l5s1 disc for a 2nd time, the first time the pain you described matched perfect for l5 nerv, The second time it matches the s1 nerve. This was awsome cause you explained what each part does and how it effects you.
Thanks for your explanation of L5 S1. I'm taking my sister for surgery on 10/28 & I now have a better understanding of her pain & the surgery that she now needs. Thanks!
@@zanganoyt5541 Hi! My sister Kimberly had her surgery October 28th 2023. I couldn't believe those staples in her back!!! I helped change her bandages! I'm happy to say her surgery was successful and she feels so much better. She's back to her exercises and walks and doesn't have pain. She actually finally went back to work today!! What a coincidence!!!.. that I saw this today from you ☺️. .Thanks for asking about her!❤️
@@mitchneag4233 very good, at London independent Hospital, doctors are great, they put me to sleep for short periods of time, when I awake up it was all good, I was told to they have inject 4 places and, take it easy for few days. The pain is gone. 🙂.
Great explaination! I wish I saw this before my L5,S1 Laminectomy Discectomy 5 days ago! Nice to understand my last 2 years of pain issues. Thanks a bunch!!!
Got diagnosed with L5 disc bulge in 2017. I was in constant pain, unable to sit or walk for around 5 months straight. Muscle relaxants helped to give the ischias nerve some more room so that the pain would not "take me completely out". After a long recovery, I no longer have any pain. Only thing that still bothers me slightly are spasms on my left foot, a strength imbalance between my legs and a tendency to trip or fall a little easier that before. This propably happened due to my rapid weight loss earlier that year and I didn't take that into account while working or working out, since my muscles got weaker while losing the weight. Great video! 😊 Edit: when I reffer to muscle loss/them getting weaker, I mean that my core/supportive muscles got weaker and that was propably the reason why it happened to me. My tip for weight loss: remember to take care of all the "boring" muscles as well as the ones you like to show off.
For my brothers and sisters out there who are suffering with back pain don’t give up. Keep working at it and things will improve for you. The pain is no joke and anyone who has suffered will totally understand and support you. I am sending you positive vibes and a virtual hug. Stay strong and Godbless!
Well, you've just explained the majority of my pain w/ the S-1. I've had severe Scoliosis, in the shape of the letter "S", since I was 12yo. When I was 15yo an Orthoo Surgeon performed a Harrington Rod Fusion in the Sagittal region of my Spine. About 8-10 years later I was in severe pain and a different Spinal Surgeon pointed out that the Rods were in upside down so he had to remove them. I've been in pain since I was in my mid 20's, I'm 60 now. I went to a Neurosurgeon & Spine Dr. a week ago for some relief. He was making plans for a Lumbar Fusion until he received the CT San he ordered. Then he pointed out the CT Scan how the previous Fusion has caused me to have severe Degenerative Disc Disease and how my Cervical Spine had curved even more due to the first Fusion. He warned me that IF I were to have another Fusion that I'd be in worse pain and my Spine would be persistent in attempting to keep my head and Spine straight. This would cause my head and neck to become extremely deformed so I'll remain in pain for the remaining years of my life. I told him , It could be worse, I could be paralyzed?! 🥴🫣
Hello from India 🙏 reading your story only makes me think of how brave you must be, despite the severe pain you have been through for so many years.😢😢 I hope to learn to be inspired by you ❤ My best wishes for your future and prayers for you to get some relief 🙏🙏
My MRI test result and conclusion only tells me that I have bilateral neuroforaminal stenosis, facet arthosis in the L5-S1 area. Since my pain is almost always with the muscles on the back of my legs, your video helps me narrow down the root of the pain that is the S1 nerves. Thank you so much for the video, and I will continue to watch your other videos.
Im 38 and suffer with bad low back pain and sciatica. Also have spinal stenosis & ddd. Also got herniated discs. Wish i could find a doctor that understood how painful this gets at times!!!
This has been very useful. I have had my quad going numb on and off after standing for thirty minutes or more, for over twenty years and never knew why till now. My L5-S1 has been acting up for the past few months. I have had undiagnosed back problems and never knew it. Although I suspected that at times. Thanks for your help.
Over ten years ago I started with back pain. Turned out I had herniation in L4/5. I now have herniation in L5-S1. I have pain right above my butt crack, heels, butt, and groin. I had an epidural injection a few weeks ago which took away the groin pain. The other pain is still there but much much better. I had a fusion of L4/5 last year which led to L5-S1 to worsen. I’m assuming I will need another surgery but will be putting it off for a while. I have tried every treatment you could think of for ten years and some of them multiple times. The only thing that took the L4-5 pain away was surgery. I have also had neck pain for over twenty years. But the back pain was so extreme that it over shadowed the neck. After treating my neck off and on for twenty years I am now having surgery next month to fix that disc. I am very active and don’t know how to live without hurting myself. It doesn’t matter if I lay around all day or run. It’s been terrible but as a mom you just make it work. I’m praying one day I can be done with neck and back issues.
Greetings, I'm 24 and I've been having back and leg pain from a bulging disk in my L5-S1. This happened a week ago and the pain has decreased, I can walk but with a little pain, the same with sleeping.. I've talked with a doctor and he wants to do a procedure called "Nucleoplasty" what are your thoughs about this procedure? And many thanks for keeping the people informed about this important subject!!
L5 nerve pain pattern: Back pain - dull ache, pain goes down into the buttock to back of leg , then down to outer side side of leg , then outer side of ankle, from the knee down outside of calf behind the lateral malleolus, outer side of foot, to outser side of little toe. ( sometimes, between big toe and second toe). S1 nerve pain pattern: (more of true sciatica pain pattern): Pain at back, and then buttock, down to back of leg/calf , down back of lower leg, back of knee, at the back of heel and right down under toes.
Thank you so much for the explanation! I got L5 S1 since 2020, and the biggest symptom is the numbness on my heels, along with some on and off back pain, sounds like my problem is more on the S1 side, I’ve been doing core strength exercises for 2 years, it really helped me with the pain ❤
Same here. Just about the same period of time, I do inversion table occasionally, still jog in the mornings and some gym, that has kept me going with a little pain to almost no pain. Numbness is my biggest issue but not bed at all compared to other cases I've heard about
@@jrmurillo1104 I am still a bit afraid of jogging 😭 I don’t want to put any more pressure on the spine to make it worse again, and speaking of the numbness, I went to a doc before, he told me “not too bad, you’ll get used to it”, I was quite mad at him for saying something not so helpful, but right now I feel like I’m really used to it that sometimes I don’t even notice anymore
@@RoBDeeZL42 yes! I’ve been doing core strength workouts and have a lifted desk for work so I don’t need to sit all the time, right now I have no discomfort from my back, and my heels are fine now as well. Hope this helps
@@skyler.w6012 thanks for your response to a question from an old comment. How long after onset of numbness did the symptoms go away? And did you ever have the surgery?
Thank you so much for how you explained it.I have the same issue and you have helped me visualize it properly and understand that I had had symptoms I didn’t understand until now.Great work.🙏🏾
Just had revision fusion L4L5 and now I have the exact pain locations you described and believe my L5S1 is the issue. My surgeon didn't want to fuse it but now I wish he had. Could not sleep for 4 days until I asked for a Medrol Steroid pack and it knocked out the inflammation but hoping it stays away.
This video was helpful with explaining, Im 29 and ive been diagnosed with L5/S1 disc protusion, I just wanted to see if there were any safe exercises I could do to help heal it before it gets worse and before surgery. Any advice would be appreciated.
Great video with a great explanation of the effects from a L5S1 bulge. I’ve had an MRI showing that is what I have yet the VP only help “professionals” seem to offer is a prescription for gabapentin which I refuse!
Wow, you explained and exactly described my condition! Been to so many types of doctors until i had my mri result. I thought i have feet problem all along! Question, i have ovarian cyst measuring 3.8cm. Could it be the one causing the bulge?
Thank you very much for the explanation. I understand better now my pain pattern. Still trying to figure when my pain is coming from my disck bulge or is coming from my facet joints arthritis.
Excellent explanation. I've already had L3-L5 fusion but now I'm getting pain below the knee down the calf and to my foot. Sometimes numbness too. I'm now looking at L5 S1 ALIF. Hope this does the trick
Dealing with the same Sir. It starts from my ri bum down to my hamstring to my calf to a few of my toes. But I took some of Doc's advice in another video and make sure regardless of how much pain I'm in, I determined to walk even if it's in the house for 2 to 3 mins. I drink 4 litters of water and I drink 1 cup of coffee (coffee fiend). Realizing staying in bed hoping the pain go away doesn't do nothing but stiff me up to be in more pain. Even right now as I typing this, I'm standing up at my kitchen bar. We got this Sir. I pray everyday and I just can't give up "Kobe killer instinct" hopefully we both get well super soon. Cause this pain is surpass any level I ever experience.
You’ve described me perfectly and what I’m dealing with sounds the exact same!! I am definitely having an s1 problem but I’m having pain on the top on my foot where you exactly noted in the video and sharp pain in the area of my first three toes starting with my big toe… does this still sound correct for an s1 problem?? …thank you so much for your content!! I’m only 35 and I’m on a massive healing journey 🙌🏻
Excellent explanation . You are a very skilled presenter of information . Thank you it’s helped me to get the picture of what’s going on , as I’ve had years of these issues . Currently I’ve been in a bad way all this year . I’ll go find your treatment advice !
Thank you so much for explaining how the nerves work. I am having problems walking with pain and numbness going from my back, butt, down my leg into my foot. My doctor thinks l need surgery but l don't want to do that. What excercises can l do for my herniated disc? Is there a way of rebuilding the disc? I take collagen every day in my smoothies. Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏 Thank you sooooo much for your help 🙏🙏🙏
Excellent explanation, thank you! It's obvious after watching this that I have a problem at L5. I have occasional lower back pain during the day, but a constant burning ache along the outside of my right calf. Even if I seem to be okay when I go to bed at night, the back pain and leg pain flare up a few hours after I fall asleep and awaken me, seriously disrupting my sleep. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen don't really help. I need to find some exercises that will help alleviate the pain.
I appreciate the video. This helped me understand more of what’s going on. The only other thing I experience that wasn’t mentioned is sometimes I get aches in my upper abdominal area as well as the middle of my back. I got an mri and found out that I have a l5 and s1 disk protrusion. I’m not sure what to do about it, especially since I’ve tried pt and chiropractor.
Perfect explanation. Thank you. I have having Erectile Dysfunction and I have been diagnosed with l5 s1 disc space narrowing. Is it related to the pinched nerve?
Had my MRI results yesterday and thats exactly where my prolapse is, the consultant recommends surgery but I'm worried about the recovery time. I've been dealing with pain since April 😞
Suffering from below" There are reduced dise spaces at L3-4-5-S1 and D11-12-L1 levels. There are changes of lumbar spondylosis. There is bony canal stenosis at L4 and L5 levels. There is straightening of the vertebral column with loss of normal lordosis." Just saw orthopedic and my physio folks. On a second opinion is this curable as I have just entered my 30s and would honestly love to enjoy my life carefree in some time of precautions. Any expert opinion is truly appreciated.
Thank you so much for this information you have given me perfect English explanation of my problems with s1andl5 it started with the sciatica around a year ago and now I only get a slight dull ache in the tail bone area if possible will it get better
I have either bulging disc or herniation on both sides of the spine on the L5/S1. Had a CT scan. I think maybe the L4/L5 disc as well. My pain pattern follow the L5 the most. Back and then outside of the calf down to the ankle basically between the ankle bone and the Achilles tendon. Also feels like the Sacrum hurts and almost down to the Coccyx at times. Also can feel like a knot right where the sciatic nerve goes by the Piriformis muscle. Like at times it's like a little knot in there. It actually started like that at first. And then the pain manifested towards the back as well. I only have pain down right side of the leg, not left leg thankfully. I am looking to get Physiotherapy and I hope they can help me somehow alleviate the pain and help it heal some. And maybe strengthen the muscles around the spine. I bought a new chair because I think my old one is a large part of the problem that caused it. I sit a lot and I am a heavy guy so I can imagine the stress that L5/S1 disc has been under.
Thank you for this VERY informative video. I have been diagnosed with a L4/L5 bulge; however, I see now that the hamstring is affected.. The condition has persisted for weeks, is not improving and if anything, is worsening. I will discuss the potential S/1 involvement with my surgeon. Thanks again for a VERY well prepared and informative video.
I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and discs bulging at L4-L5 and L5-S1 with sciatica at 18 and the past 4 years have been so full of pain that I can’t remember what it even felt like to be without it. I get epidural steroid injections every few months to get me by but the pain is almost always there
@@heathstjohn6775 Hey! I am now 22 and things have slowly declined along the years. I have weakness in my affected leg and the epidural injections are not lasting near as long as they used to. Not quite sure what my next step will be but hopefully it won’t be surgery! Hope you are well :)
@@isabeltrotman4732 You ask about me, whilst suffering yourself, and at 22: very commendable. People who see others, or overhear them in daily life, often find reasons to dislike them, without knowing that a little conversation with them should have altered their opinion, favourably. The comments exchanges on here disable those objections, and immediately allow mind to speak to mind, thought to thought, so humane sympathies are created, and discussions are had which should never have otherwise been stimulated or had, which is priceless. No, I'm not, thanks. But truly, it's a subject that I'll not dwell on, here; many a blow to the heart and mind have taken place, for which there are no prescriptions, none medical, anyway. However, my purpose was to ask about you, and by doing so I've seen in your reply evidence of resilience, thoughtfulness, and strength of character, which should serve you, and especially those whom you meet, very well. Affections sent to you.
I am still waiting on Dr appointments. I went to hip surgeon who diagnosed L5 S1 issues. I think I am more with the L5 issues but some S1 issues. I am waiting 1 month to get into PT but I am doing L5 S1 exercises in the meantime. All I want, is to be rid of the intense pain without surgery. Wish me luck.
Thank you so much!!! Very informative!!! I have L5 S1 disc herniation. Had surgery 3 mos. ago. Pain has lessened. Went for second follow-up, he said the pain will continue to lessen. I wish he would've told me that before now. I asked him what will happen after surgery. I thought that this level of pain was what I was going to have for the rest of my life. My surgeon explained the problem & a little bit about the pain pattern but you gave a lot of information. Wonderful. I know that dr.'s are under pressure to see many patients in a day so that may be why he didn't go into depth. Thanx again. Also, didn't know about your sciatica website. Thank you for informing me about that. I so appreciate it.
Just received my results from my MRI scan, At the L5/S1 level there is a large central disc herniation causing moderate canal stenosis and compressing the transiting 51 nerve roots bilaterally particularly on the right side. I was involved in a RTA last august as a pedestrian so potentially this could be the result of that. It is so disappointing that I had to see a private physio because the NHS let myself down. Only had a xray once I had the accident, was referred to nhs physio but never received a phone call or letter. Maybe I wouldn’t be suffering as much right now if the NHS never let me down. Anyway positive note…my private physio is drawing up a plan to fully rehab and to live my life to the fullest again! Stay strong and positive everyone
Your video gives me the exact cause of the problem I am facing.L5 S1 issue...since last 5 years I have been facing this problem but till date no proper solution I got from so many doctors...areas which you show the pain like buttock, outer thigh exactly I am facing. My pain never goes down below the thigh or in knee...Could you please help with the rehab exercise to manage this..Pls.pls pls share you videos or provide me the link of your videos to manage the same...as I am.suffering the pain in my right leg
I must say this was one of the best explanation and clarifying L5 S1 and it's pattern. Congratz. Just got a subscribed. My pain comes from the buttock then, only front part of my calf, can it be sciatica or piriformis syndrome? Appreciate if you can answer it.
Thanks for the info. I’m due for surgery June 27,2024. a bit nervous about it but hopefully everything will go well. Been living with this condition for over 10 years and can’t no longer tolerate it. Any tips on how to prepare for it mentally?
26 with an L5/S1 bulging disc. Based off of your description I have a mixture of both. I can’t stand or walk more than 5-10 minutes before I have this horrid aching pain in my hip and my calve to the underside of my foot begins to tingle to the point of going numb. Until I sit down and bend over at the waist it helps to relieve the pain (interestingly enough considering bending over stretches the sciatic nerve). I’m in PT, but I’m not sure if it’s yielding results. Neurosurgeon consulted with us and said PT is the best option. But my disc is very badly bulging. Odds are I gotta wait for the disc to heal and in that time progressively do PT.
I recently got L5-S1 herniated disc while doing deadlift. Was confirmed with an MRI. My doctor told me surgery if pain keeps increasing but I could see some improvement in pain , hoping it will heal itself and will avoid surgery
My disc have improved a lot now , I just took 1 month bedrest , stopped gym and any weight lifting. Now 2nd month, I started walking upstairs, downstairs , lifting light objects, walking, avoid bending but did pull ups. Now, in 3rd month, my numbness in right feet is reduced a lot. I think I'm normal now. So, disc buldge might have shrink in size. I am now able to bend but will avoid gym for now.
Informative video. I have been diagonised after an MRI with Spondylolisthesis. How does that relate to this video? I actually did a search for that term on your channel and this video popped up.
Thank you very much for explanation about this sciatica. But my question is , is there another treatment for this cause apart from surgery. Thank u once again
You described my pain perfectly. I had both symptoms and recently underwent surgery. It getting to 12 days now but my foot drop isn’t fixed yet. I’m worried if I will be able to walk normally again. What should I do?
Sending love brother! Thanks for the inspiration!!!!!
@twn2rbo how are you doing now?
I was hardly able to pee! I had urine retention and pain in both legs and feet. I'm on week two and I am in agony. I have saddle numbness still and idk if I'll ever recover nerves from this!
Thanks for inspiring
Sometimes surgery is necessary and unless you're a medical professional that specializes in spinal care, you shouldn't tell people this is completely fixable with lifestyle change. Thats simply not true.
Suffered an L5 S1 disc bulge over 14 months ago , the pain severe could barely walk for 7 months, started to improve slightly after 10 months , then had a Nerve root block injection , now can walk and am pain free . This condition is agony. Good video , greetings from London UK 🇬🇧
Did it cause sex problems?

Thx !!!
I'm having surgery in Sydney next week for my compressed nerves around L5, S1.
I want you to know that your video here is brilliant, Cheers mate!!
Thank you so much, I'm wishing you all the best for your surgery! I hope my channel can offer some support for your recovery post-surgery :)
How was your surgery mate? I am from Sydney and having similar pain
Hi.. How are you after surgery? Any recommendations for good surgeon or centre for spine surgery in Sydney ?
TY!! 💪💪
So pleased to hear you are improving. Glad you find the videos useful!
It seems you have the book, Back Mechanic, by Stewart McGill. Your approach is his recommendation for a pain-free life.
Best thing I ever did 🥰🤞🏼
You described my wife's S1 problem very accurately!
Get an Lumbar spine MRI scan bro.
So sorry to hear that and hope it improves for you soon!
@@ultimatebeast8624 I hv same. Back pain and buttocks pain. How old u r
A lot of your videos have made sense and have substantially educated me on what’s happened to me 😁
How’s your back now?
Hello, has the chiro helped?
Will, I only just discovered your channel today, and I think it is is Godsend! It's as though you met me and decided to do videos on all of my problems. I will be 70 in December, and I am suffering from horrendous sciatica, bad balance, all sorts of issues you address in your videos. I am already a big fan! Thank you.
Just received my MRI reading with an L5-S1 bulge. Thank you for this outstanding (and clear) explanation. Also just started PT today and keeping fingers crossed things will improve. Your explanation and this video is so very much appreciated.
I have the same thing I’ve been hurt for 2 months now are u fully recovered right now because I’m still in pain
Thanks for this i have just buldged my l5s1 disc for a 2nd time, the first time the pain you described matched perfect for l5 nerv,
The second time it matches the s1 nerve.
This was awsome cause you explained what each part does and how it effects you.

Thank you so much, you have just diagnosed my problems of many years, now I need to know how to treat this L5 problem.
Great explaination! I wish I saw this before my L5,S1 Laminectomy Discectomy 5 days ago! Nice to understand my last 2 years of pain issues. Thanks a bunch!!!
How are you now?
Yeah how are you feeling now 5 days in?
Edit: when I reffer to muscle loss/them getting weaker, I mean that my core/supportive muscles got weaker and that was propably the reason why it happened to me. My tip for weight loss: remember to take care of all the "boring" muscles as well as the ones you like to show off.
As long as it's not a "foot drop" you're getting because that could be more serious.
I’m in the same boat, did you lie in bed for a good 5 months because I’m unable to sit or walk. All I can do is stay in bed in pain. How did you cope?
For my brothers and sisters out there who are suffering with back pain don’t give up. Keep working at it and things will improve for you.
The pain is no joke and anyone who has suffered will totally understand and support you. I am sending you positive vibes and a virtual hug. Stay strong and Godbless!
Wow that's so nice of you, thank you ❤
Well, you've just explained the majority of my pain w/ the S-1. 🥴🫣
Hello from India 🙏 reading your story only makes me think of how brave you must be, despite the severe pain you have been through for so many years.😢😢
I hope to learn to be inspired by you ❤ My best wishes for your future and prayers for you to get some relief 🙏🙏
Exactly! Thank you. Mine was an injury related matter but now I understand, but where does all this weakening come from?
Dr you are correct
I have all the symptoms you have explained 😢😢😢

And many thanks for keeping the people informed about this important subject!!
L5 nerve pain pattern:
Back pain - dull ache, pain goes down into the buttock to back of leg , then down to outer side side of leg , then outer side of ankle, from the knee down outside of calf behind the lateral malleolus, outer side of foot, to outser side of little toe. ( sometimes, between big toe and second toe).
S1 nerve pain pattern: (more of true sciatica pain pattern):
Pain at back, and then buttock, down to back of leg/calf , down back of lower leg, back of knee, at the back of heel and right down under toes.
1 yr later did your heel numbness go away?

Appreciate the detailed explanation but I'm keen to know if the nerve sensations are accompanied with extreme muscle weakness also.
Thank you for this amazing video!! How is it possible that there is nerve compression with symptoms down the leg, but no back pain?
Great video with a great explanation of the effects from a L5S1 bulge. I’ve had an MRI showing that is what I have yet the VP only help “professionals” seem to offer is a prescription for gabapentin which I refuse!
I take 2 gabapentin (200mg)at bedtime. It helps the pain some but if I take any more than that i have too many side effects
That's the thing with these stupid so called professional giving you medication to fix the symptoms(pain) but not the cause of it!

Very grateful for your explanation, it really helps a lot to understand the origin of the pain I have.

Thank you so much for this information you have given me perfect English explanation of my problems with s1andl5 it started with the sciatica around a year ago and now I only get a slight dull ache in the tail bone area if possible will it get better
You are welcome!
I get epidural steroid injections every few months to get me by but the pain is almost always there
How are you now, fellow sufferer-traveller, please ?
Take it easy with the injections dude 3 injections inside of a year will start demineralization of bone
@@isabeltrotman4732 I was more scared of the injections than the surgery.
Very well explained I get back injections every three months for the past four years I cannot live and function without it
Which type of injection do you get?
Epidural Cortisone lumbar injection
I am still waiting on Dr appointments. I went to hip surgeon who diagnosed L5 S1 issues. I think I am more with the L5 issues but some S1 issues. I am waiting 1 month to get into PT but I am doing L5 S1 exercises in the meantime. All I want, is to be rid of the intense pain without surgery. Wish me luck.
I'm wishing you all the best and I hope your PT is able to offer you the support you need to finally experience relief!
This was very helpfully. I had an MRI that also explain everything you stated.
Great content! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
Thank you so much. This was such an informative video. Thank you thank you it helped me understand where my pain is coming from.
So pleased my video could shed some light on what you've been experiencing!
This is so painful i rather give birth or have a tooth pain😢😩
Your video gives me the exact cause of the problem I am facing.L5 S1 issue...since last 5 years I have been facing this problem but till date no proper solution I got from so many doctors...areas which you show the pain like buttock, outer thigh exactly I am facing. My pain never goes down below the thigh or in knee...Could you please help with the rehab exercise to manage this..Pls.pls pls share you videos or provide me the link of your videos to manage the same...as I am.suffering the pain in my right leg
Thanks for this , had the l 5 since Monday terrible pain going for a steroid injection next Thursday 🙏🏻
Did it work?
Fantastic explanation!
This was so very helpful. I’m going to check out your website.
Thank you so much!
I must say this was one of the best explanation and clarifying L5 S1 and it's pattern. Congratz.
Just got a subscribed.
My pain comes from the buttock then, only front part of my calf, can it be sciatica or piriformis syndrome?
Appreciate if you can answer it.
Thank you for such a clear explanation!
I wonder if there are specifics exercices for each pattern ? . Thank you :) Greetings from Argentina
EXCELLENT EXPLANATION THANK YOU
Phenomenal video and explanation. Thank you.
No problem!
Very good description and demonstration. Thanks
Would you just described this exactly what I'm going through thank you so much
Thanks for the info.
Me too am feeling the same for what you are feeling and my MRI shows L5/S1 Dehydration with bulge and thecal indentation.
I dont know what can i do?
Has PT helped? I’m 28 with 5 mm L5 protrusion
@@razataggarwal7365hey i got the same l5 s1 disc herniation while deadlifting;how many days did it take for u to get normal?
Informative video. I have been diagonised after an MRI with Spondylolisthesis. How does that relate to this video? I actually did a search for that term on your channel and this video popped up.
Thank you. Your explanation was very clear and helpful.
I got spondlythesis in that area
Thank you very much for explanation about this sciatica.
But my question is , is there another treatment for this cause apart from surgery.
Thank u once again
Yes, I have some other videos on my channel about treatment!
You described my pain perfectly. I had both symptoms and recently underwent surgery. It getting to 12 days now but my foot drop isn’t fixed yet. I’m worried if I will be able to walk normally again.
What should I do?
speedy recovery
How are you doing now have you recovered from this??
