Gary Allan is such an underrated artist. He has an awesome voice and I love his music. As someone else said his wife took her own life and many of his songs reflect that. I love his Christmas song (oh holy night) which is also my favorite Christmas song but he does it the best. So many other good songs by Gary. Right where I need to be…smoke rings in the dark…nothing in but the radio. So many good ones.
Here's the thing about Gary Allan: He has lived his music. Others get songs from other people, pick one, sing it, and put it out, but Gary writes and/or sings songs that have meaning, and more importantly, have meaning to him. Now, when I said he has lived his songs, for the most part that is literal. His wife was an airline stewardess that suffered from severe migraines and depression. His songs "Watching Airplanes" and "Right Where I Need To Be" are somewhat about her. Now because of those migraines and the depression, his wife ended her life, leaving Gary and their young daughter to deal with sadness and grief. His next few albums are phases of that, with "Best I Ever Had", "Get Off On The Pain", and "Life Ain't Always Beautiful" being highlights of his grief over losing her. He finally decided to move on, which is emblematic of the song "No Regrets", which directly deal with the grief and moving on from that phase of his life. The album that "Every Storm" is on is pretty much the final phase of not only moving on, but seeing life in a different light, but every now and then hints of his dark era creep in, like "It Ain't The Whiskey". When Gary does a song, it tends to be from the soul. It's not just manufactured to make money, like most music is. He's sort of a cowboy philosopher, his songs have depth and meaning, and they grip you with his voice and lyrics. How he hasn't become a bigger star in country music is because of the studio execs and the labels. They aren't interested as much in meaningful stuff. But, Gary Allan will remain, because as he puts it, "I don't want to be the big star for today, I want to be the guy that is always around making music for 30, 40, 50 years." I listed several Gary Allan songs in the writing of this, and I'd love to hear your take/reaction to them, as I encourage every reaction channel to do. Gary might not need the accolades, but he definitely should get attention for hiss great music!
