This song, along with “Best I’ve Ever Had” is from the tragedy of his wife’s suicide. He’s underrated, under-appreciated. Hopefully, you will expose his greatness!
"Best I've Ever Had" is an AMAZING song .... I picked up tickets with my wife and mother-in-law to the first tour he did after the event and release of that song. We've seen him 2 more times since.

My late husband and I saw Gary Allan every time he came through our area, his music matured as we matured. My husband was not one to show emotion, but Gary Allan music was one of the few that would really get him relating. Now, he's the one that helps me dealing with my husband's passing. It's been years, but there are still days I just go for a drive with the radio on crying through the memories to keep the healing going
He has been my favorite since he first came on the scene in 96.

I can say a lot about Gary Allan, but others have already said some of the things I was thinking of. Gary has a way of not just making something sound great, but the lyrics he has for songs makes you feel and makes you think. Most of all, he's lived his songs. He's got a series of albums going through different stages of grief after his wife killed herself after suffering crippling migraines and chronic depression. She was an airline stewardess, which he brings up in "Watching Airplanes" and "Right Where I Need To Be". Her death is brought up in the cover song of Vertical Horizon's "Best I Ever Had" and in "Life Ain't Always Beautiful". Then there is the song that embodies his getting over the grief and preparing to move on with "No Regrets", which most directly talks about losing her. There are other songs, but those are the most direct ones dealing with that era of his life and music.
I mentioned how he has music that makes you think. In "It Ain't The Whiskey", the song setting sounds like an alcoholics anonymous meeting, while the video makes it look like it could be either a funeral or a wedding he attends for someone he apparently was attached to at some point. The song goes on saying that his problems isn't the whiskey he drinks, the cigarettes, or the stuff he smokes, the real problem is all the things he can't forget like the emptiness he was left with when the woman ripped his heart out and ran to someone else, then he sneers at the AA meeting at them thinking the drinking is the problem, when it is merely a symptom. A similar theme of seeing someone you love go to someone else is in the song "Today". A lot of his lyrics are much deeper than average country songs, which has a lot more gravitas and weight to them. However, that and his wanting to do things his way, not the way studio execs want him to be is what kept him from being a really big country star. Personally, he's always been a big country star to me, and I really appreciate his music since they got me through some pretty dark times.
You could react to all his best songs and have reaction videos for months on just Gary Allan alone. Most of all, not many other reactors have done reactions to his songs, and trust me, I've made requests to many of them, and only got to see a handful of my requests answered, but some answered with actual enjoyment and appreciation. As is said below, and I've said many times myself, he's a severely under-rated artist that isn't given his just due.

Gary Allens an actual tried and true human. Guy speaks from experience. There's no agenda. He doesnt do the stereotypical religious thing. Recounting a story of how MrMiyagis ghost, played by Jesus, saves his entire life and completely redirects its trajectory, while he sits on his ass eating a biscuit listening to a radio program about CORN!!! Gary Allen is so inspirational, I swear, if I ever hear a mother hubbard disrespect him by calling his music 'motivational', Ill pop outta nowhere and slam a bible closed on their nutsack. I hope Ive professed my love and admiration for this Angel among men sufficiently.

This song was not written with his wife on mind at all. He wrote an entire album the year after she passed. This is from 10 years later and Matt Warren came up with the hook the wong is based on.
