Not too bad. Ive heard of autocad but ive been using blender for about 12 years so id stick with that. Its more mechanical but works well for being free. If you wanna do cross wire hatching thats pretty simple. Take a plain. Subdivide and the unsubdivide and give it a wire modifier

tip : there is a button at the middle top of the 3D view screen that will bring a drop menu and there it says individual origins, this should speed up your workflow when needing too do multiple faces the same way
I think that we all agree that GW has a big problem when it comes to 3D-printing. As of yet, they have no answer to it besides coming after 3D-printing people harder. But that is a loosing battle. As 3D-printing becomes cheaper and the quality increases almost to the point where printed minis are indistinguishable from injection molded ones GW looses ground. Although they increased the output of codices novels and all the other nice stuff, their main market is minis after all. So what to do now? Selling STLs? Maybe not. To have the kind of revenue they get from the minis itself, such STLs have to cost the players a fortune, easily hundreds of Euros for some basic troop squad STL. What's even worse is the point, that the STLs will end up on fileshare servers faster then anyone can say piracy. And when the files are available on the internet noone will buy them from GW any more. Therefore i can't see a scenario where GW will ever sell or sanction official printed minis. Forbid printed minis on any official event forever and come after all players and content creators that use them? This wont work for long either. To many people design to many nice STLs and more players start using them. The price difference is just too drastic and the number of options is incredible. Sooner or later players will host their own large events with printed minis being allowed. I can't see GW winning in any way. They will try to shut down any and every single 3D-printed mini, terrainpiece or bit for a while. They have to try. In the end they will either come up with a proper solution for the time when everybody has a high resolution 3D-printer in his hobbyroom or they will inevitably start to loose on the sales front until they perish.

There is no winning against this technology... soon there will be a 3d printer in every person house that is in the hobby just like paints and glue. FLGS will let people use the 3d printed stuff first, because they need people to come in the door and they are not going to drive them away. I still think GW needs to be in the whole market of 3d printing, produce their own resin in GE Official Colors, produce their own printers with GW ascetics. Maybe do a subscription service like other patrons, thats helps continue to roll in profits even though the STL ends up online. Then they can focus on only taking down their actual STLs instead of anything that is remotely close.
It all comes down to pricing and convenience I think. GW is in the same boat as many game publishers were back in the day, when they tried to combat piracy with aggressive and inconvenient DRM. The piracy problem was eventually solved by services like Steam and GoG who provided games that were cheaper than traditional retail prices and also more convenient to obtain than pirated copies. Netflix did the same for TV, and iTunes did the same for music. GW is in the SecuROM phase of their life cycle right now. I think they need to completely abandon their traditional business model of producing overpriced figures and start 3D printing products themselves to bring down production costs. I think they could also sell a subscription service where subscribers get GW-sanctioned STL files ready for printing at a premium. Their business model is unsustainable because of the dramatic price difference between their products and 3D printing. They either need to start selling boxes of 3D printed Space Marines for ten bucks a pop, or they need to gain control of the STL files. They should also refocus much of their business into supporting their models, things like paints and craft materials. After all, we can't 3D-print paint and glue.

That's because GW executives are absolutely clueless; like the Dinosaurs before the meteor they're going to get wiped out... What they need to do is focus on selling 3D printer blueprints with registered SNs for each model they sell; then when you print your model (or commission them to print it for you) they stamp the SN onto the bottom on the model for reference purposes at official events. Cheaper for them, less problems with supply chains - and as an added bonus they basically kill the resale value of their minis for official events as your minis are now registered to only you. Took me 3 minutes to figure that basic outline of a system out and I'm an undereducated moron; what excuse do they have?

That's a great bunker, must have been very satisfying to do. As for GW stores allowing this- it all comes down to the individual manager. Some won't even allow Forge World models!
I have studied AutoCad at college and have about 2 to 3 years experience using it out in the field. Also studied Solidworks, and being a US Airforce veteran I can get a 1yr lic. for only $25.00. I hope to use it to create 3D files to then 3D print. Great work!!
Great 3D modelling, and paint job! I would recommend some tile grout to cover those printing lines and to make the whole thing look like concrete before you throw any paint on it. Aside from that, nice job! :)
@@FacilityD20 Watered down all-purpose filler/spackle is good, too (optionally with white glue mixed in for durability). I use filler for a good deal of my basing, too; I needs no texture paint! 😜

You may want to boolean union those armor plates instead of just sticking them on the walls. That way you won't have extra interior walls in your print.
Man... not really... I am still learning, it takes me a long time and a lot of trail and error at this point. If i get better i will go into more details.
NICE IDEA!!! I think a little ladder/stairway with an opening hatch roof door would look more realistic, I mean you can put literally anything into it, feeling it's a bit wasting the empty space on the ground floor and don't have anything to do with them

I think terrain will be mostly left alone by GW, as some of the largest tourny groups sell their own stuff and use their own layouts for consistency on the comp tables. It probably helps that you can't trademark or copyright things like "destroyed gothic building #2".
I don't think they are going to kick you to the curb so much as they are going to break your legs, tie you to a cinderblock, and then throw you in the ocean.
I would be super interested in seeing a video of cheap ideas for printed resin terrain. I only have access to a resin printer, but printing terrain on that thing can get a little pricey.
For sure, Resin printers are not the best for terrain... maybe some smaller scatter terrain elements, especially if you hallow them. I do have a project in the pipeline that will have some original scatter terrain that I am going to draft and will resin print... but that is a few weeks out.
To answer your question: It is my opinion that GW bans everything that interferes with their own profit. I've not seen handcrafted ruin-pieces on my local stores ever since they released their ruin-set. Same with bunkers, defense lines and even craters. So since they have a bunker line, I'm sadly positive that they'd not allow your awesome piece in an official store (maybe if you're chummy with the owner and it's a piece of your army..but..that's a big question mark.) On the other hand, most Warhammer events I attend aren't even sponsored or held by GW, so their guidlines and rules don't apply to 95% of what I do in my hobby. You do you, stay creative and open minded!
Looked great until you drybrushed and the print lines came back out, should probably just give it a quick scuff to flatten those so you can save time drybrushing later on. Either way great video!~
I've been messing around with those pigments like your rust on my miniatures and I love the dusty effect. Is it possible to keep the dry dusty look if you seal it? Whats the best way to seal it? Some Valejo matt varnish just arrived but i'm worried if I try it i'm going to loose the effect im going for. Also is windex ok to use on models as a thinner? I'm buy 12$ thinners and it adds up! Love the combination of 3dprint +hobby videos, keep it up!
Thanks. There are 2 ways to apply the rust pigments. 1. like I did here, apply dry and then seal with IPA. 2. Mix the pigments and IPA together and brush it on like paint. Once the IPA dries it has dusty dry look. However you really need to apply a matt varnish over it, because it will rub off on your hands and other parts of the model if you don't. Yes, I have been using Windex as a paint thinner for my airbrush for a few years now and I highly recommend it.
They have pigment fixer that does the best job at keeping the pigment dusty looking. Light coats of varnish can work too, but it's pretty ez to go overboard and have it "wet out" in a way that can lessen the effect's intensity. I suggest painting and varnishing normally, then add the pigments/dust last and "fixing" it or use another light varnish coat to lock it down and provide proper protection. You can make your own fixing agent, I think, fairly easily. Not 100% on the formula as I'm still using up my brand name stuff, but their are mosdef videos here on YT for it.
I no longer give any F's what GW cares about. I am determined to create an entire 3d Custodes army. I have experience with AUTOCAD and SOLIDWORKS, hope I translate over to blender easily. Have to many balls in the air currently, hoping to grab a 3d printer after the holidays, plus I found a 3d printing class at close community college I am gonna take. It's part of their engineering program and nicely I have the prereqs from back in the day. Honestly, that map is awesome. I would not care what GW thought, its a really nice surface to game on.
Hard to say man, for me I had a lot of experience with AutoCAD 3d and I find the learning cure a little hard with blender (that said I defiantly don't practice enough) but 10 years of drafting with dimension and seminary is hard to shake and Blender is not set up to efficiently to draft that way. However, I have committed to practicing a few times a week now, I have been working on a tank and its turning out ok so far.

Right now for the function and price point I really like the Anycubic Vyper. I would buy that one too. Whatever you get make sure it has a self leveling heated bed... don't bother getting one that don't have this.

I stopped playing 40k a few years ago purely because I couldn't justify the constant price gouging that GW encourages. Having seen a few 3d print vids I am increasingly tempted to get one. I have experience with 3d modelling as I moonlight as a 3d modeller during my university years, while I'm way out of date with modern games the skills should be enough for minis and terrain.
Mini's I understand but terrain? If people put effort in to it to change the field up a bit the store should atleast allow it. It's good for them too. People want to play on different maps.
I can see them banning it specially if they have their own to sell, but they really shouldn't. Watching all these 3d printing vids makes me wanna get into it. I just couldn't do the painting. I suck at painting lol

Here is a different question, exactly how does one differeniate between a kit bash and a printed custom minature? To me to tell the difference is impossible....kit bash are not only approved but necessary if you want to run a obscure chapter that lacks any kind of support from GW, whereas custom printed is not, we can get all the ultra marines we want but beyond that you are either to kitbash or print, yeah there are outlier accesory kits but they are limited to only a couple of chapters......but GW is more then happy to sell the codexs for many chapters that they do not offer the specific characters for so yeah. Next topic is price, $35 minimum for a single special 32/40mm minature is theft plain and simple.
@@FacilityD20 I play amongst people I know not in tournaments, we use whatever proxies will feel like as well a combination of different rules from several editions that we come to agreement on, I would assume a lot of people play the same way so outside of official tourneys or events GW does not get to dictate anything in any reality.
I wonder how GW produces their figures. Maybe the already have an army of 3D-printers that throws out the figures by the hunderds. Material costs at a rock bottom price and sell prices set to maximum. This is, of course, just baseless speculation.
Injection moulding. The initial tooling costs are high, but once that's set up the machine just pops out a finished product every ten seconds. You can recognise injection moulding by looking for the manufacturing marks. On a large item there will be at least one circular marking somewhere out-of-sight that where the plastic was injected. Usually on the base of a model. Small items made as a set like model pieces will be left connected by the plastic sprue rods, which also form a convenient means of attaching them together in packaging and shipping.
@@FacilityD20 Sure Scratch built is usually fine, and this terrain piece will be fine _for you_ (and for you alone) because you designed it yourself. This is basically GWs stand here. If you wanna use 3D Printed things you have to design, Model and print it yourself. Commercial and public bits are not allowed and i can see them applying the same logic to terrain. It fully depends on the store. My Store Manager is cool with pretty much everything you bring (as long as a lot in your army is from gw or you bought something in his store before / he knows you). He just likes seeing models
GW is going to ban it because they're not making money. Do it for you. Think about starting up your own private event where people can bring their 3D Printed units and terrain, thats what i did because my local didn't want me bringing 3D printed stuff. I print in UV resin but, same ideas. My recent project is a Heldrake, Im either dumb or smart to try it. My brother is working on a forge fiend.
Just because historically scratch built terrain has been at their tables for a long time, so the question comes to mind about 3d printed terrain being a new way to "scratch build" terrain. I think GW would agree with your point, I just wanted to pose the question considering the project in the video.
Who cares. The hobby is now firmly back in the control of the people who matter most, the hobbyists. I hope and wish that a revival of the type that was seen in the late 80's early 90's for this medium is established once again. Video games isolate us, wargames/boardgames bring us back together.
Who cares what GW thinks anymore. They will ban it from their stores, which is another reason I will not play at their stores anyways. They forget that once we buy anything they produce it is OURS to do with what we wish, including playing with *shock* 3d printed stuff, other manufacturer's items, etc. Give GW enough time and they will figure out how to make it that you are only leasing their items from them. Adding a UELA to miniatures. ;) (this is all said as a joke, but not too far from the truth)
I just buy GW stuff to build and paint, I've stopped now because I have a resin printer and the models on patreon are much better than GW stuff, plus I can add my own personally flare to them. GW stuff is just WAY too expensive. They're going price themselves right out of the market.
First GW only owns rights to the symbols and there sculpts. Names as well. Copyright laws allow for likeness to a %. Change things to at least that much and name it something else.

the mind is the limit.... i think in canada copyright bs...if you alter the subject/item/picture more than 10%....in a nutshell. its then something different....its what we complied with at the college/university...it maybe different for your country. so then an example is they cant copyright all poses.....so thing in question should be more than altered enough, from different poses than they have......with infinite poses ....then they cant do anything but make noise. do your research....read the fine fine print pass the lawyer legalize same i thing for logos, heraldry.... GW is fighting the current......they should sell stl files and get while get-in good
GW will Never be ok with 3D printing, its like a drug dealer being ok with you growing your own. They want to be your only source of minis, then they have complete control over the product, which is understandable. If they dropped their prices by 30% (which they can easily afford) 3D printing would largely be ignored by the vast majority of wargamers.
GW can say whatever they want but in large i think the community's just gonna look the other way if you made something great. No no one wants lame terrain and GW sure ain't helping in that arena.

NICE IDEA!!! I think a little ladder/stairway with an opening hatch roof door would look more realistic, I mean you can put literally anything into it, feeling it's a bit wasting the empty space on the ground floor and don't have anything to do with them

The 3D printing GW needs to get behind is selling stls for horde armies so they're finally not cost prohibitive to field.

I think terrain will be mostly left alone by GW, as some of the largest tourny groups sell their own stuff and use their own layouts for consistency on the comp tables. It probably helps that you can't trademark or copyright things like "destroyed gothic building #2".

I would be super interested in seeing a video of cheap ideas for printed resin terrain. I only have access to a resin printer, but printing terrain on that thing can get a little pricey.
For sure, Resin printers are not the best for terrain... maybe some smaller scatter terrain elements, especially if you hallow them. I do have a project in the pipeline that will have some original scatter terrain that I am going to draft and will resin print... but that is a few weeks out.

To answer your question: It is my opinion that GW bans everything that interferes with their own profit. I've not seen handcrafted ruin-pieces on my local stores ever since they released their ruin-set. Same with bunkers, defense lines and even craters. So since they have a bunker line, I'm sadly positive that they'd not allow your awesome piece in an official store (maybe if you're chummy with the owner and it's a piece of your army..but..that's a big question mark.)
On the other hand, most Warhammer events I attend aren't even sponsored or held by GW, so their guidlines and rules don't apply to 95% of what I do in my hobby. You do you, stay creative and open minded!
That's crazy. Building hand made terrain is such a huge part of this hobby as well... but yeah most FLGS will let it fly for sure.

I've been messing around with those pigments like your rust on my miniatures and I love the dusty effect. Is it possible to keep the dry dusty look if you seal it? Whats the best way to seal it? Some Valejo matt varnish just arrived but i'm worried if I try it i'm going to loose the effect im going for.
Also is windex ok to use on models as a thinner? I'm buy 12$ thinners and it adds up!

Thanks. There are 2 ways to apply the rust pigments. 1. like I did here, apply dry and then seal with IPA. 2. Mix the pigments and IPA together and brush it on like paint. Once the IPA dries it has dusty dry look. However you really need to apply a matt varnish over it, because it will rub off on your hands and other parts of the model if you don't. Yes, I have been using Windex as a paint thinner for my airbrush for a few years now and I highly recommend it.
They have pigment fixer that does the best job at keeping the pigment dusty looking. Light coats of varnish can work too, but it's pretty ez to go overboard and have it "wet out" in a way that can lessen the effect's intensity. I suggest painting and varnishing normally, then add the pigments/dust last and "fixing" it or use another light varnish coat to lock it down and provide proper protection. You can make your own fixing agent, I think, fairly easily. Not 100% on the formula as I'm still using up my brand name stuff, but their are mosdef videos here on YT for it.

I no longer give any F's what GW cares about. I am determined to create an entire 3d Custodes army. I have experience with AUTOCAD and SOLIDWORKS, hope I translate over to blender easily. Have to many balls in the air currently, hoping to grab a 3d printer after the holidays, plus I found a 3d printing class at close community college I am gonna take. It's part of their engineering program and nicely I have the prereqs from back in the day.
Honestly, that map is awesome. I would not care what GW thought, its a really nice surface to game on.
Hard to say man, for me I had a lot of experience with AutoCAD 3d and I find the learning cure a little hard with blender (that said I defiantly don't practice enough) but 10 years of drafting with dimension and seminary is hard to shake and Blender is not set up to efficiently to draft that way. However, I have committed to practicing a few times a week now, I have been working on a tank and its turning out ok so far.

Right now for the function and price point I really like the Anycubic Vyper. I would buy that one too. Whatever you get make sure it has a self leveling heated bed... don't bother getting one that don't have this.

GT rules specifically allow custom bespoke pieces even at events. They just have to be your own, and not purchased from a third party.

@@FacilityD20 yeah. I mean, it's still pretty restricted, but it says as long as you modeled it yourself, bespoke 3D printed parts are allowed. It's under the section talking about battle ready paint jobs.

I stopped playing 40k a few years ago purely because I couldn't justify the constant price gouging that GW encourages.
Having seen a few 3d print vids I am increasingly tempted to get one. I have experience with 3d modelling as I moonlight as a 3d modeller during my university years, while I'm way out of date with modern games the skills should be enough for minis and terrain.
There's always other games.

This bunker looks great! Don't get the hate for GW, it's thier IP. I would defend my IP aswell. It is like 3d ppl want GW to go under wich is a shame since they are litterly this Hobby since no other system intrest 99% of the hobbyist with either shit lore, rules or models.

Here is a different question, exactly how does one differeniate between a kit bash and a printed custom minature? To me to tell the difference is impossible....kit bash are not only approved but necessary if you want to run a obscure chapter that lacks any kind of support from GW, whereas custom printed is not, we can get all the ultra marines we want but beyond that you are either to kitbash or print, yeah there are outlier accesory kits but they are limited to only a couple of chapters......but GW is more then happy to sell the codexs for many chapters that they do not offer the specific characters for so yeah. Next topic is price, $35 minimum for a single special 32/40mm minature is theft plain and simple.
From what I understand GW wont even allow you to use mini's with 3d printed guns or shoulder pads now.
@@FacilityD20 I play amongst people I know not in tournaments, we use whatever proxies will feel like as well a combination of different rules from several editions that we come to agreement on, I would assume a lot of people play the same way so outside of official tourneys or events GW does not get to dictate anything in any reality.

I wonder how GW produces their figures. Maybe the already have an army of 3D-printers that throws out the figures by the hunderds. Material costs at a rock bottom price and sell prices set to maximum. This is, of course, just baseless speculation.

Injection moulding. The initial tooling costs are high, but once that's set up the machine just pops out a finished product every ten seconds.
You can recognise injection moulding by looking for the manufacturing marks. On a large item there will be at least one circular marking somewhere out-of-sight that where the plastic was injected. Usually on the base of a model. Small items made as a set like model pieces will be left connected by the plastic sprue rods, which also form a convenient means of attaching them together in packaging and shipping.
On GW allowing this, it is not something they make, it was created by you, so it does not break their rules. It should be allowed.

@@FacilityD20 Sure Scratch built is usually fine, and this terrain piece will be fine _for you_ (and for you alone) because you designed it yourself. This is basically GWs stand here. If you wanna use 3D Printed things you have to design, Model and print it yourself. Commercial and public bits are not allowed and i can see them applying the same logic to terrain. It fully depends on the store. My Store Manager is cool with pretty much everything you bring (as long as a lot in your army is from gw or you bought something in his store before / he knows you). He just likes seeing models

Just because historically scratch built terrain has been at their tables for a long time, so the question comes to mind about 3d printed terrain being a new way to "scratch build" terrain. I think GW would agree with your point, I just wanted to pose the question considering the project in the video.

They forget that once we buy anything they produce it is OURS to do with what we wish, including playing with *shock* 3d printed stuff, other manufacturer's items, etc. Give GW enough time and they will figure out how to make it that you are only leasing their items from them. I just buy GW stuff to build and paint, I've stopped now because I have a resin printer and the models on patreon are much better than GW stuff, plus I can add my own personally flare to them. GW stuff is just WAY too expensive. They're going price themselves right out of the market.

First GW only owns rights to the symbols and there sculpts. Names as well. Copyright laws allow for likeness to a %. Change things to at least that much and name it something else.

They want to be your only source of minis, then they have complete control over the product, which is understandable.
If they dropped their prices by 30% (which they can easily afford) 3D printing would largely be ignored by the vast majority of wargamers.
