  • 3D Printing compared to a plastic Games Workshop model compete with quality?.
    In this video, I go through printing out a space marine that is meant to represent a GW Warhammer 40k miniature. Showing a little comparison between the two and how the 3D printing Primaris Eradicator stands up to the Primaris Eradicator from the Games Workshop line of Warhammer 40k miniatures.

    3d printing won't put GW out of business, GW will put itself out of business for not adapting. They could easily change from being a miniature production company to a game company that sells STL files but still have the ability to sell physical models for those not yet into 3d printing.

      As easy as that: sell old models as STL, same with forgeworld models, those are anyway out of stock or production most of the time anyway.
      They still hold the intellectual property that they've using to make tons of money in books, games and, now, a tv show.

      Honestly, I would buy the fuck out of GW stls, because of the money saved. Even if the stl of a patrol set was $50 - $60, I could at least reason that Id be able to make hundreds of the models Id want for different variants and even Kill Team exclusive models while still supporting GW.

      Yah i saw this video with bob naismith yesterday ( he was a OG Gw Sculpture ) he said why dont they make their own printers and you buy the file as a one time thing and it sends the file right to the Gw printer and you can print it and they dont worry about files being stolen. I dont like the one time use but i understand it.

      Plastic is by far better to work with for kitbashing, I do own a lot of store bought Warhammer and other game systems. I think 3D printing and buying is finding that happy medium that works for you. Sometimes a bundle of minis in a box set can have a decent price that I am willing to pay for, it just has been far too long since I have.

    Most patreons are pre-supported and standard resin is crazy brittle. Use an ABS-like resin or better. Sunlu makes a pretty cheap ABS-like and its actually really good. Use Ethyl Alchohol to clean your prints. Leave them in 45min-1hr no more and support removal is a breeze. Just be super sure to wear gloves, ethyl will do a number on your skin.

I recently spent 50 dollars on a T'au battlesuit, and while it's a high quality mini, and it's a really cool one at that, I spent more on that than I did on a game I recently bought, and the mini is already sitting on a shelf collecting dust since I don't even play Warhammer, meanwhile I plan to do another playthrough of that game already. Great video, and I respect your thoughtfulness in talking it through. I don't tend to hope for the downfall of anyone, but I do hope Games Workshop recognizes there's been a fundamental shift in the "value" proposition their products represent now. There was a time when the only way to have models like they sold was to buy them from a company. That day has passed. And each year there are more extremely talented 3d artists happy to contribute their model making skills to the community for little or no cost at all.
    The only remaining "monopoly" or leverage that might justify premium prices for tiny plastic models seems mostly to do with ownership of the IP. But if all you're offering your customers is the threat of legal retaliation or prejudicial exclusion at community events, it may be time to reconsider the value proposition of your business. What's the "need" that you're actually fulfilling at this point? What are you providing that people can't provide for themselves and their friends for far less cost? And is it still worth the exorbitant prices? I think the adjustment is either innovate and offer something people truly can't do for themselves, or bring the prices down. Maybe even come up with a creative maker subscription model allowing printers to license models. Either way I hope GW finds a path forward that benefits its employees and it's customers.

    • @NatesMiniatures
      @NatesMiniatures  Рік тому +2

      I agree loteknomad5032, hopefully GW will make the right choices down the road. I fear their prices will never drop, if anything they will still argue having to up them every year. I know material prices will go up and transportation of their goods will also go up, but at the end of the day it would cost them in the cents region to create a sprue of space marines.
      Their markup is unfair and I have a feeling it is more driven by making sure the share holders see profits go up rather then it being the case of their material cost keeps going up.
      They would have contracts with places that supply them it would be silly not to lock in a price for a couple of years each time. Shipping is another beast, but again they have been doing this for years and have dealt wise rising oil prices many times before I guess the only new territory would be Brexit and having to deal with that so I understand that could be a big disruption and raise prices.
      BUT, ever since I started the hobby back in 1996 I remember GW announcing price rises every year back then. So it is hard to believe it is always inflation they are scaling their product on. I tend to think it has more to do with how far can we push the price before the customer no longer buys our product.
      I also think the side of GW where they loved the creativity is gone, sure their a passionate people that work for GW but they are not the ones in charge of profits.
      I could go on but I think I tend to just ramble rather then make actual points so I will stop there.
      But I would very much like to see price reductions or even a damn sale from time to time.

Perhaps even a subscription model where people get a bunch of freebies each month. If they're smart they could even watermark the models to discourage sharing & piracy.

      I have seen that Mantic Games has started doing a subscription model for their STL files. It would be good if GW did that but I seriously doubt they will ever do anything like that. It would be nice though, being able to print official GW models at home direct from GW.

    GW needs to get in with a slicer company and make a locked stl that can be printed X number of times before having to be purchased again. Like many DRM type things. That way they can charge a low price for the stl, knowing that the purchaser will only get so many prints off of it. Any use of it not inside that window is illegal and they could sue. Course that wont stop people from figuring out a way around it, that isn't any different that anything else,, if one could say, buy a full squad stl for $20, and have official units you can use in tournaments, vs free stl's you cant, many would shell out that $20. Its like states who legalize marihuana, they finally figured out, people are getting high, your not able to stop it, might as well be able to tax it. People are printing alternatives already, for the most part they do it because they cant afford the real ones and printing them is a fraction of the cost. They might care about not being able to play official matches, but they likely don't. However, if a cheap alternative existed, that was match legal. They also just might, and your making money on people who otherwise wouldn't have used your stuff.

      You could even go a step better and it is not that expensive by going to Etsy or eBay and find sellers of printed files. Or you could go to a friendly local game store where they sell miniatures and see if they have any Warhammer games that someone will be willing to show you.
      Most times you can get a game in if you are new to the hobby, or even walk into your local Games Workshop and ask if they could teach you how to play and you can use their miniatures in store if that helps mate. I would say 3d printing is fantastic but I would not want you to jump into 3d printing and all the stuff like painting if you are wanting to play a game, because there is a free way of being able to play.
      Once you get a game in or two then you will have to think do I love this enough to play for real, and do I want to play in a tournament one day. 3d Printing is cheaper than GW minis but you will not be allowed to take your printed army into a GW store or tournament.
      Some local games stores might not like it either but that is a case to case basis.

    I once converted some Eldar Exodites. GW didn't make models of these. I used steeds of slaanesh, High Elf mounted legs and Harlequins torsos, arms and heads. There was nothing like these in the GW range but were accepted by the local store. Yes, they were mostly GW parts and green stuff but 3D printing wasn't a thing back then. Unsure about printing services for 1:1 copies of GW products but I am guessing there probably is. For me, I really don't think there is much to 3D printing that is a big effort.
      But I do have my routine I stick to with printing, washing, and curing. And that seems to work out for me very well.
      I still prefer not to print out 1:1 models, and to be honest apart from the videos I have made on them. That is really the only time I have done so, there are just so many other great alternatives that are close but still their own thing I rather put my time into.
      And thank you for the kind words @kenchoi702 🙌🙌

    The only people I've met with gripes about 3d printed models was the poor quality. And after seeing what they did to their injection moulded box sets, 3d printing quality should be the least of their concerns.
    Personally i have an epax x1k printer (1k res mono screen), and once the settings are dialed in, it churns out really immaculate models. Any issues are usually on my end with supports or not noticing a glob stuck to the film.

    • @NatesMiniatures
      @NatesMiniatures  10 місяців тому +2

      Yeah exactly, for me the Elegoo Saturn 4k does just fine. I usually run it at the 0.05 layer height but I have printed one mini at 0.03 and the quality increase was very noticable but the time to print puts me off of that a bit. The standard layer height is usually fine for me.

    My opinion on 3d printing. I need the printer and room to run the thing. So for me the plastic is very good for working with in my current location. Especially for GW and other store available minitures.
    Forgeworld and out of print on the other hand. I need to find someone local where I can store the printer so I can print those models. I am not dealing with the really poor quality of the Forge World Resin when it's shipped to AU. I've tried it before an never again.

      @@Dstinct its not really the same thing, you can think about warhammer like a mix between static modelism (like gunpla) and card games, they price things in an arbitrary way also taking into account the rules and the power level of the models, it was always been like that...explain to me why a commander unit (literally 1 small 2'' model) is 50 euros, because: 1) you need it. 2) you need only one of those...its easy to see why they price things like that, and also consider that they have complete domination on the market so they can basically do whatever and people will still buy it regardless of the price, cause theres no alternative

    So I don't play WH40k. I would like to give it a try. In fact I did, but I HATE assembling the models. One wrong clip and I ate too much money. when I had a guy who did play, show me to cut the arms off of the model, then put magnets in, so I could swap out weapons, I was like "I just wan to play the f'ing game and see if I like it". I was like $100 (US) in with a small Eldar (spelling) kit, and was hating it. Now I tell you this because I do have a 3d printer and I have printed a ton of miniatures I have painted for other games. "IF" Games Workshop sold me the complete freaking models that I could just click and print, then paint for a REASONABLE price, I might give this game a shot. So like I should be able to download say 2 decent armies of STL files, for say $100.00 (US). This should be say a 2,000 point army. Then I could print them out, and play with a friend. If I liked it I would buy more STL files from them. No more of the crap of "sold out". If a model breaks, I print a new one. Also the models should have the option of separate pieces OR put together. Now another thing I believe they should do is to offer models already assembled AND painted. So I and my buddy could go in, spend say $100 to $150 each and have a decent size army to play against each other that day. I am not saying 6 models vs 6 models. I am saying >15 models, of high quality and already painted. As it is now, if I wanted to pursue this game, I would buy their book(s), then download similar STL files to play with my friends. I may or may not paint them but I know my investment would not be so high and if I didn't like the hobby I could easily get out. If I liked it then I would push doing it with more friends. I realize I could go to EBAY and buy models already done, but I from my understanding of the game,, I would want to really figure out who is going to be in my 2,000 point army or even a 500 point army.
