Miriam also in hand quilting if you want smaller stitches you need a small needle such as a 10 or 12 hand quilting needle so you can get 10 - 12 stitches per inch. 😉 I used to use a hoop when I started hand quilting but now I like to quilt without a hoop. 😊
@@StitchObsessed I use 3 different kind 🙃 I like YLI Hand Quilting Cotton, Coats and Clark Hand Quilting Cotton and Mettler 40 weight Cotton Quilting thread 😉
Wonderful information, Miriam. Am I the only one who likes simple quilting lines? Sometimes, the quilting is so busy that it competes with the piecing; ones eye doesn't know where to look. Also..where on earth are you located? I'm in Northern California wearing 3 layers of Duluth Trading Co. clothing and you're sleeveless!
I totally agree! I think that’s why I gravitate towards straight line quilting or a simple loopty-loop design for most of my quilts 💖 plus then I can just do those myself and not spend money on a longarm quilter! And I live smack dab in the middle of the country in Missouri! Haha but sewing space has one window which gets direct sunlight so it’s pretty warm in here…plus when I shoot videos, I’m nervous, which makes me hot 😂😂😂😂🫣
I love your videos. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I just finished my first hand quilted quilt. I did the big stitches with Pearl 8 Cotton. I enjoyed working on it in the evenings. It took me 2-3 months. I’m so proud of it and love it so much. I used the Baptist fan design. I would use a pencil and trace out a row at a time.
I love to hand quilt and am quilting a queen size carpenter star now, to keep it from overwhelming me I only quilt for about 2 to 3 hours at a time on it every other day, I do small stitches, I use WonderFil 80wt and a size 10 quilting needle. Also work on making other small projects to help with the "Igot something finished" mindset. Yes hand quilting takes time but is also rewarding!❤
Wow 80wt?! You must be doing teeny tiny stitches! That’s awesome!!! That’s a great tip to do a little bit every other day so you don’t get overwhelmed. I’ll remember that! Haha I have the problem that when I’m working on a project, I don’t know when to stop and take a break 😂😂 thank you for watching and sharing your pointers! 💖
I think that echo quilting is even easier than stitch-in-the-ditch! Sometimes I just echo a quarter inch away from a seam, so I just use the presser foot to keep a straight line. If its not perfect, it is not noticeable at all, unlike stitch in the ditch.
Ha! I literally just tried that this weekend on a small project! I actually kind of liked hand quilting without the hoop. It was a small lap hoop. I’d love to try using a large frame!
@@StitchObsessed I have a Pfaff creative ambition 640 sewing/embroidery machine. Apparently I can machine quilt in the embroidery hoop. It was a special anniversary model that I bought a couple years ago while we were posted in Germany.....so I haven't found a lot of videos of people using it.
@@NextStopTheWorld Ooooh, that kind of hoop! Yes, I’ve heard of this, but I haven’t tried it myself. There are quilting embroidery files for sale on Etsy though. Maybe if you reach out to one of the sellers they could direct you to a YT channel that shows how to do it?

Great video. Im always learning something new
Thank you, Dolly!! 💖 I’m so glad you’re learning from my videos!
I use crochet cotton when I tie a quilt and a curved needle.
Great idea! 💖

Yay! I’m so glad you’re learning!!! Catherine, you are the emoji queen!!!👸 💖🤗
Hi Miriam, did you suggest cutting the batting and backing the same size? Then lay it on the top and quilt it?
Yes, I normally have my backing and batting be the same size, which is usually about 3” larger than my quilt top on all sides.
Thank you!
I just got my Hera marker
Oooo nice!!! 👏🏻 I hope you like it!
Have you ever done quilting in the hoop?

The only time I like tying quilts is if my top is very wonky and doesn't quilt well.
If you have an embroidery machine, there are ways to quilt. I haven't done it myself, yet.
Oh yeah I have seen that done. That’s pretty neat!
Also, sit down quilting machines.
So true! 💖
