Dear Geekgamers. I have been toying with playing this RPG for a while, but couldn’t get my ‘head round it’, until I saw this play through...I bit the bullet, bought the print version (excellent quality btw) and went for it. I have to say, it was the best solo RPG experience I have had to date - absolutely brilliant. I played a female archer, Sedan, with her trusted canine companion, Fanir......sadly, she was killed in an epic struggle against a dire wolf (elder beast)...Fanir still roams the Wilds mourning his dead mistress....👍😀Thank you so much for the inspiration!!
Stef Rum So glad to hear this! Sounds like you got a great story out of it. Personally I love animal companions too. There’s a really rich world out there of material for the soloist! Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the video! Really enjoyed it. Other folks have already identified the narrative or mechanical bits I would have remarked on (moving between your allies and the the combat progress track). For your character sheet, I might suggest you look at using paper clips for your trackers. It was explicitly designed for that, although tokens or scribbles will also work fine.
Selfishly, I'd love to see you running a solo game with your third character, though I know you have plenty of games in the backlog. At the minimum, if you do play, please let me know how it goes and if you have any questions.
Shawn Tomkin Thanks, Shawn, for such an awesome game! I think the paper clips would work (I started with them) but because I was filming it became a logistical problem to move them without placing one of my arms in front of the camera.
And yes looking back now I see a few things I could have taken advantage of in your rules. You’ve thought of so much!
While I can’t promise more adventures with the Woods Girl (these kinds of things are much harder to film that traditional games), I am still thinking about her so you never know!
I bought Delve in physical with PDF, is Ironsworn physically similar?
@@josephamos3587 Yes, it is. I have everything Shawn has made (and have ordered everything he will be making) in physical specifically because of just how good of quality his books are. The are well worth every cent.
Just picked the PDF up for free today.
Man... The author is being incredibly generous giving it away for free. My goodness! I love it!
I'm going to buy hard copies as soon as I can
Ben From Gulf City He really is! What a rich and elegant system this is.

Louise Pixel Awesome! Always great to hear from a fellow RPG sister. So glad you enjoy my content and thanks for commenting!
Love the way you put a story together. Very inspirational
Absolutely amazing - the system and your imaginative use of it. This system could easily be used for any genre.
You have inspired me to get the print version of Ironsworn. Thank you for the videos.
Just found this video looking for a playthrough of Ironsworn, and this is perfect. Thanks for making it!
So glad you stumbled here and I hope you enjoy(ed) it.
Thank you this has helped me understand the game better, and your story was wonderful ! Excited to check out more of your videos since I like to learn about different games
Love this. Played a few solo games of Ironsworn and really like it. As far as your question about the initial tavern encounter, I believe - and how I understand it (haven't played with two characters myself so YMMV) is that you can do what you did as long as the narrative supports it. So Sir Torr could be seeking an advantage from the barkeep and Eowan could be mingling about with the other NPC in the tavern.
Been watching all your ironsworn content. Just ordered both books hard copy. Looking forward to playing as we continue our quarantine. Please do more gameplays, I really enjoy them!
Thank you so much. That’s great to hear. On my list is another Ironsworn Delve vid... at some point! It’s a lovely system to play.
That was truly fascinating and FUN to watch!
More than watching you follow the main book and adding bits of story here and there, I love the resourcefulness of grabbing a different book and adding to the overall narrative.
allluckyseven Thank you so very much for the comment and I’m glad you enjoyed it. I do tend to grab for stuff outside the rules... :)
Brilliant as usual. Cheers
Thank you so much for this intro. I've been looking for an actual introduction on how to actually play Ironsworn and this is the ONLY video that shows how I could ACTUALLY start/build the game. Most other videos are just the gameplay itself. So THANK YOU ever so much for this amazingly done video.
Another video of yours that I also checked is Blades in the Dark, and again it was soooo informative. Thank you so much for that too. You're really good at explaining these games.
This is the only channel that does the intros right. It's really strange that most other channels go straight to the gameplay without ANY explanation of how they built their game first. Or if they do explain it, it is always in passing without explaining the underlying systems.
Thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate hearing this as I try explicitly to walk people through how I get going.
Enjoyed how you do your randomness, it's necessary imho not to have to make up everything. Fascinating exactly the minor magical item :)
Amazing story! Please continue :)
Thank you for doing this video. Love it. Have got the PDF and will try a solo adventure this coming weekend. Can't wait.
It's a very rewarding system. Enjoy!
Thank you for sharing this video! It's really entertaining, I said I was to watch only ten minutes and when I noticed I was already halfway through.
Well that is a lovey comment to read, I appreciate hearing that and glad you enjoyed the vid.
Great video, really enjoyed it. Please continue the story.
Amazing story development as always!
Great video! Love your solo rpg! Please continue with your wonderful game play videos! Such awesome imagination!
usapatriot4163 Thanks so much; I really appreciate knowing the content is being enjoyed.
Life in the Ironlands is miserable and its represented greatly in the rolls, I spent more time "paying the price" than doing heroic stuff.
Just finding your channel after starting to research solo rpg stuff. Thank you for a WONDERFUL beginning exploration of Ironsworn! I've been a video/digital rpg player for decades, but during this time of isolation, I wanted to start creating stories of my own through pen & paper rpg. Found Ironsworn, and have been looking up various videos to see how to engage in this sort of format. Of all of the videos I have seen, yours is the most engaging, demonstrative, exciting, and inspirational that I've found. This has been an enormous help for me, my getting started - everything you've shown here - not just your narrative/storytelling, but the way in which you use the actual, physical materials within this system - from the published book, to your dice and printed materials, all the way down to your journal writing and sketches. Such a fantastic "tutorial" for me! Thank you!
@asentoni thank you so very much for this comment, which makes me feel so good about that vid. I really enjoy the Ironsworn system and wanted to highlight that when I presented it. I'm glad you find it so useful and I hope that you enjoy the many vids on have on the channel about various aspects of solo RPGing--from general concepts to explorations of various systems.
@@GeekGamers01 Thank you for the reply! I have, indeed, subscribed to your channel and have been thoroughly enjoying all of your content. Thanks again for your wonderful work.
Super! Thank you so much...Really looking forward to playing this game and your play through is extremely helpful and inspirational👍
Glad to hear it! the system is really easy to get into and offers so much by way of a foundation for whatever you want to explore. I hope you enjoy it!
Excellent video on character creation and playing the game.
Was unsure of the system when I saw the pdf on first glance, but now I’m sold! Seeing how it actually runs in solo makes me want to play solo specifically as a preference . Thanks for doing this !
flyaturtle Thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it. The game is doable for sure. If you give it s whirl, enjoy!
Just downloaded the pdf after watching your intro video. It looks really interesting. Now I'm watching your playthrough and having a look at the system. Thank you very much!
Tupinamba77 Great to hear. Enjoy! It’s a very workable game that’s easy to get into.

Plan on picking this system up because of your recommendation - Thanks for all you do :)
Jeremiah Dvorak It’s a wonderful system and very rich in possibilities for the soloist. I hope you enjoy it. And thank you very much!
Really cool to see you moving forward with the inspirations you got from Magic Realm.
Thanks, Adam. I was determined to get something from those characters... somehow!
Well THANKS, now I have to find a way to make some time to play this game, you did an amazing job demonstrating it!
Ah, thanks!
Great video! I really love the analog feel. Makes me inspired to do some videos of my pen and paper campaign. Might need some props such as your cards as inspiration :)
I want to read this novel. Thank you for this wonderful story.
Thanks for the video! It added to my slowly growing understanding of this fascinating game! 😅
This was amazing...love your story-telling....The system looks really good for solo play. For my personal play style, I would like for combat to be a little more tactical...But for every other aspect I think it will help generate some rich adventures.
Gerald Goodwin Thanks for the comment and I’m glad you enjoyed the vid. Understand what you are saying about the combat. He’s released some new content since I’ve made this vid but I don’t know whether it addresses combat.
I would say either or character could try their luck at gathering information. With the use of the Aid Your Ally move (pg. 76) I could almost see your Knight maybe doing some menial chores like bringing in some firewood so that the Pilgrim could get more of the attention of the bar keep. Normally the Aid Your Ally is another player's character but I don't see any reason to not have the characters just interact with themselves organically.
I know a while back I asked about this for solo play and boy was it worth the wait. Thanks for putting up some videos about this very awesome system.
Stephen L. yes you are so right. I definitely should have used Aid Your Ally! Your little narrative here would have certainly enriched the scene that I had already begun. Glad you enjoyed the video. It is an awesome system indeed.
You explained and demonstrated Ironsworn very well.
Michael McGregor Thanks so much. I appreciate all feedback on my vids so I can continue to improve.
Thank you 😊
Thank you for making this fantastic video! This was exactly what I was looking for. I've purchased the hardcover from Drive Thru RPG.
Duggy Gee You are so welcome! I’m really glad you enjoyed the vid and I’m certain you will be so happy with Ironsworn, an absolutely wonderful system.

Nice use of Alexander’s Pattern Language. I have that book, but never thought of using it in that way.
Captain Nolan Thanks. It’s such s great book, as are his others. I use it often when soloing.
I've got A Pattern Language on my shelf but never ever thought to use it for gaming. Mind blown.
love that crochet hook pointer at 10:36
You must be new to the channel. ;)
Thanks!
I am just getting into Ironsworn and it looks good. One of the things that initially (before I actually read much) caused me some concern was the concept of Moves. I took it to mean that there were limited options, somewhat like a Choose Your Own Adventure book. I wanted to have the freedom that you find in every other RPG, where you just do whatever you want and hope that your character's skills support it. I am just now starting to read up on the Moves and am thankful that I appear to have been wrong.
Actually, the moves in Ironsworn function almost the opposite of what you thought: they allow for freedom and aren't restrictive. Basically you decide what you want to do and then look for a move that will most closely describe that. There's room for a ton of interpretation. You are not looking at a list of moves, choosing one, and then doing that thing.
that d10 is cursed to role only 10s
when I got my MBA in computer science I gave myself a present, and it was that yellow book there because I thought it could have been useful for procedural generation. I loved that book even if I never managed to do something concrete out of it. After so many years, hearing it mentioned in a video that basically talks about procedural generation of stories definitely made my day.
Ah this vid is so old I can’t remember! What book did I mention? Time stamp? In any case I’m glad you were happy to hear it!
@@GeekGamers01 christopher alexander, a pattern language. He kind of invented design patterns with that book.
@@emanuelesangregorio8943 Ah yes! One of my favorite books. I use that-and some of his other books-in many videos across the channel. Such important work
I've never really played RPGs before but I think I'm going to give Ironsworn a go. Thanks so much for this, it was fantastic!
Oh thanks for the comment, Tom. Love your channel and that’s good to hear. I think you’d enjoy this. And if playing alone fails, you can always play with Marty. :)
I'm not sure anyone mentioned it, but the Volume 2 Assets have a "Kindred" Companion I think you could have used in place of a full blown character for your priest, if you wanted to keep the spotlight on Sir Torr. This would simplify things into playing to one character's abilities but, of course, would limit what the priest could do outside of the narrative (and would also take up one of your Assets). Love your videos and I look forward to more!
Spencer Salyer Thanks for this comment. You are certainly right about that “asset” option and it would have been a good one. Glad you are enjoying the content.
I have Ironworn and the solution I arrived to the tracking problem of the various resources is just to use paper clips, the metal kind, and if you use the big side above it circles the number perfectly and keeps it's place, while being easy to change the place if needed.
I love your videos so much and they really help me better understand my games. One random question though-- what is your camera setup? I want to record my gameplay in the same way, but am not sure what kind of gear I should use.
Dade Scolardi Thank you so very much. I’m glad you enjoy my work.
I don’t have any fancy setup. Just my phone, earphones, and a $20 tripod.
How wonderful that you have infused your gameplay with the Magic Realm characters! It is good to see the Woods Girl again. One of the benefits of your gameplay is seeing where my own journey would differ, sometimes greatly as in the Assets selected. This looks to be an interesting game system! My 'expensive finger' is poised above the BUY button. Lead on, MacDuff.
Michael Melen I was happy to use he Magic Realm folks too. My Woods Girl assets were quite poorly chosen and would not be repeated were I starting over. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment.
That's one of the changes I would make. The assets and abilities of the One We Are Seeking would be constructed once (if) we find her. This is at mile 27 in the viewing, so my thinking is a work in progress. Very enjoyable game play, and well thought-out on your part! The changes I would make are not criticisms, but 'learnings from previous adventuring parties'.
Cool shirt!
Great videos! My friends are lame, so I play solo a lot. I do have one question on the combat rules though. When your enemy has the initiative and they score a strong or weak hit, do you not take the harm they inflict? Is it only from the pay the price chart that you suffer harm? Even then, though, it's rare that you suffer harm. I am just a little confused.
FortyNothing It’s been a while but I think that if your enemy has initiative and makes a strong hit you suffer harm and they retain initiative; if they make a weak hit you still suffer harm but they lose initiative. The amount of harm the foe inflicts is based on their rank (see p. 134 of the rules).
just thinking of getting into solo rpg's so thankful that i saw your video :)
I’ve got a ton of solo RPG content on the channel and if you are just starting out I would recommend watching some of my “top videos” for general principles and advice. Don’t hesitate to ask about specific games… I’ve covered a ton of them-see the solo RPG playlist for that content

Bought Ironsworn and Delve and the card assets not too long ago...now to figure out how to actually play this thing haha.
Hello and thank you for the video! Also looking forward to seeing what happens next.
As someone who is just getting into solo RPGs, the prospect of imagining an entire narrative to play through from scratch seems daunting. I think I would want to bring in some additional generative resources to help with plot/world creation (more than you did in this video). Do you have any recommendations for a particular title you think would be well suited to pair with this system? Perhaps the Tome of Adventure Design?
Glad you are enjoying it. I totally understand feeling daunted at the prospect of creating an entire narrative. Supporting materials are awesome for all of us. I tried consciously in this video not to use too many other things (and what I did use, I used sparingly) but I absolutely think that THE TOME OF ADVENTURE DESIGN would help immensely with this ruleset! I'm also a fan of THE CLASSIC DUNGEON DESIGN GUIDE but that is more limited in scope than THE TOME is.
The great thing about solo play is you only need a starting idea and you'll play to find out what happens next! You certainly don't need a full plot line to get started (and in fact, that's probably less fun if you know what's coming next). Don't lose heart!
I am 4 years late (discovered Ironsworn just recently), but anyway, I just wanted to make a little observation about the comment at 47:20, and that is NO, the fact that you get the progress to 10 doesn´t mean the wolf is dead. That only means your chances of victory are bigger, because you still need to score a hit with the END THE FIGHT move. In fact, that is why the progress bar is set to a maximum of 10 and a big part of the narrative magic of this system: even with a full progress bar at 10, you can still lose the fight if both challenges dices score a 10 each, leading to unexpected plot twists 😄
Just a question/clarification.
At 47:15 you say that when the track reaches 10, you win the fight.
I think you actually might still lose the fight, as you obtain a hit only when your score is HIGHER than the challenge roll.
So, even if you have the full track at 10, you still might roll a double ten on the challenge roll and lose the fight.
I'm not 100% sure of this, so please let me know if I am mistaken.
Great video though, very helpful, I'm new to solo rpging and I'm still not sure how to make it work.
I am glad you enjoyed the video and truly I cannot remember but it is totally possible I made a mistake! Don’t have time to go back and figure it out now. Welcome to the channel. If you are new to Solo RPGing, check out my solo RBG playlist which has a lot of content.
This is interesting to me and I can see how this is useful as a narrative experience for a UA-cam video, but i don't understand how this game would be played by yourself, for yourself. Would you still play it the same way? Narrating the experience to yourself, talking out the processes?
Emery Marks The only thing different when I would play this way not for video is that I wouldn’t be talking.
I am a beginner to solo RPGs. Is this an easy system for beginners to pick up? If not do you have some suggestions for beginners to get into something that is easy to learn and quick to get started playing?
Julie Lane If you have played d&d or are familiar with games like it, perhaps Scarlet Heroes will be more intuitive. Ironsworn is conceptual in many ways and that might not translate to “Easy.” I have done a Scarlet Heroes vid. You might check that one out.
This game is so simple and open ended, which i like, but im confused what to do and when
Yes, that makes sense. It is not very directive and thus the weight of that falls to the player. For that reason, it is not a game I recommend as a place to start solo EPG. (Not saying you are staring, but just for context.)
Hello, just started to watch your videos. Was wondering if you talk while your playing solo or is it just played out in your head? Thank you.
Goonguy monkey Great question: when I’m playing solo RPG stuff I’m silent and it’s in my head; when I’m playing solo board games I’m constantly talking quietly to myself out loud. Not entirely sure why there is such a stark difference but there is.
@@GeekGamers01 Thank you for response. I used to play the solo fantasy books Fighting Fantasy by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone when i was younger and i am looking into playing those types of games again. Are there any current books like that you can recommend for playing?
Goonguy monkey I hear good things about Fabled Lands (there’s more than one book) but I have not played that myself. It supposedly really models an open world with lots of exploration (as much as that is possible in that format).
@@goonguymonkey611 - I know that this is an older post. If you're looking for something similar to the Fighting Fantasy game books, I recommend 'Lone Wolf'. Joe Dever (author) made his books available for free to the public at www.projectaon.org/en/Main/Home. Happy gaming!
Just played my first session with this system last night. I am playing as a Olympian style athlete who specializes in track and field. When children and livestock suddenly went missing or their mangled bodies were found, I swore an Iron Vow to find who or what was responsible and end the killings. I made my way through the forest, swam across a great river, fought some marsh rats, and entered a tomb which happened to house a somewhat friendly vampire. Apparently he keeps cages of Varou (werewolves) in his crypt because he survive 10 times as long on their blood than the blood of humans. But one of his "doggos" as he calls them escaped and has been terrorizing my village. He asks me to swear and Iron Vow to return his pup, but my character decides vowing something so important to an evil creature of the night goes against what he believes in and refuses and runs out of there despite the vampire's mind-control and intimidation attempts. He assured me that if his missing Varou weren't returned to him, unharmed, he would take his revenge tenfold on the town. As my adventure stands now, I just made it back to my home village and have to decide my next moves.
FortyNothing That’s awesome! I love it. You should post this to the BGG solo RPG ON YOUR TABLE GeekList. It’s great and really shows how a creative system and a creative gamer can work so well together. Thanks for sharing. It makes me want to get Ironsworn back out-and that’s the mark of a great story teller, you.

I could buy the pdf but i realy like phisical things :)
Sry for all the quetions, love your videos.
Eduardo Rodrigues Wonderful that you are getting into this aspect of the hobby. I wish you much enjoyment!
You picked up some great resources already and I have done videos on some of those which you may have seen already (Basic Fantasy and Scarlet Heroes). The Tome is Adventure design is convenient and thorough but not essential. You can get some random tables in Scarlet Heroes and there are also many free ones online if you look around. (Tho I know you prefer physical objects, as do I)
The book you ask about, by the way, was just Ironsworn itself.
Thanks for writing.
@@GeekGamers01 If i may make another quetion can you tell me if the stuff i got have the suficiente stuff to do a balanced combat? Like in random events say "2 is few but 4 is too much enemies for my solo person or for my party"? If not do you recomend any book to create a balanced number of enemies for combat?
Ty :)
Eduardo Rodrigues Figuring enemies for combat is always tricky unless you are sticking with something like a straight d&d which does the math for you based on XP of the party. Generally I just use a rule of thumb that I don’t want to be outnumbered by more than double (so max two to one) however in some cases that can be too much too.
You could create a chart where you rolled for a likely chance of a “hard” encounter vs and “easy” one and assign #s of monsters based on what you rolled. As always, it’s just about fun so if you don’t want to die in 5 minutes, don’t have your level 1 solo adventurer encountering hoards of giants!
@@GeekGamers01 Oh i was hopping to have some easy random gen answer to that :D

Hi! Looks like you got into the flow here
emveeay The system is so easy to play!
@@GeekGamers01 Really? The comments are good. Have you tried Blades in the Dark? Its a refined Dungeon World
emveeay Oops!! Typo! See my edit. Also, I have Blades and it was planned for a vid but I got distracted. Some day!
@@GeekGamers01 Great! I saw the edit. Whats your definitive system now, if you have one?
emveeay Great question. Not sure I have a “definitive” one but for something semi devoted to solo play and standard fantasy I like Scarlet Heroes. For something not solo but easy to use and with a ton of free content I like Basic Fantasy. Something less known but excellent with some unique mechanics and cards is MasterBook. I’ve done vids on all of these and have another vid using Basic Fantasy coming up.
Are cards available in print? Or only print and play?
Hi there! Cards are only print and play right now, but a print-on-demand deck will be available soon-ish.
Thats great to hear Shawn! Love the Book. Thank you for posting the play through geekgamer!
I would like to know where you got the paper fantasy figures
Not sure what you are asking? The character images? These are character cards from Magic Realm, as I explain in the video.
@@GeekGamers01 I meant to say the cards that you had for the game.
Where are the cards from?
Chris Lites The character cards? Magic Realm.
35:40 you roll pretty high, but Fail?
That's a 20, the highest you could get is 26.
Is it Table based, rather than "high wins"?
Perhaps I’m not understanding your question or you aren’t understanding the mechanics. I didn’t roll a 20.
@@GeekGamers01 that was 2 D 10, +1D6 and a 0 is 10.
10 + 7 + 3 = 20
I don't know the rules, and I just realised while typing, that 2D10 is also a D100.
Is that where I went wrong?
Your questions don’t make sense because you don’t know the rules. I can’t explain the rules to a whole system in the comments. I have many videos on the system, as do many others.
I'm really intrigued by this game(for solo), especially the dice system but I just don't know if I can get myself into it as story telling or unique ideas have never been my thing. So the lack of a structure to follow might be tough. Would you still recommend it for someone that is and never will be a GM tyoe player? xD
Great question. I think if you are not heavily into your own storytelling you would not find satisfaction in this game.
If you're interested in playing something that is pen and paper which has a lighter storytelling lift on your part, you might look into something like Four Against Darkness or d100 Dungeon.
Do you legit just make all this up as you go? I just can't wrap my ahead around creating my story and play it at the same time.
Yes I make it up as I go. I can tell a story and play easily but what’s hard for me is doing that with the pressure of knowing whatever I do is filmed. If you read comments across my channel you will definitely see in some vids where viewers have pointed out that I could have gone in a different direction than I did and as soon as I read the comment I thought “totally!” How didn’t I see that?
I tried but couldn't get into this game. I feel like it's more world building than actual playing
Yes, I can see how you might feel that way. In that case, not the game for you...
@@GeekGamers01 any recommendations?
@@baddiemcbadbad9231 Are you looking for something with a solo aspect baked in? I'd try Scarlet Heroes if so. (I"ve got a vid on that.)
I'm trying to learn the system:
Why with 2 "strong hit" the dangerous for take 6 progress?
A dangerous foe will take 2 progress.
With the asset sword master you will do +2 harm
And with a strong hit you will do +1 harm
Or am I wrong?
How does the experience of playing this compare with D100 Dungeon?
Completely different. All they share in common is that they use pen/paper to play.
d100 Dungeon is a dungeon crawl and, as the name suggests, the 'choices' you get are solely based on d100 tables and populated with what the designer has given. The quests are one or two sentence descriptions of things to do which basically boil down to killing/collecting. There is little to no story/narrative though of course you can bring your own to the system. It does invite that I suppose but that isn't integral to what its mission is. It's a pen/paper dungeon crawl, and a good one at that.
Ironsworn is an RPG. The rules support/encourage/scaffold/demand a story with narrative highs and lows; npc interactions; combat; discovery. You are limited only by what you bring to it. It will work in many settings--overland adventures; cities/towns/villages; etc. The characters are who you make them; the world is what you create.
