I wish they kept the fact that Jay was a really intelligent inventor who would be goofy and eccentric sometimes, and have panic attacks, but the last time season with him being intelligent or an inventor was Hunted, in the earlier seasons he’s my favorite, but after they erased such a big part of his character Cole is my favorite
Good characterization for the ninja? That's true only for Jay and Lloyd, but Nya and Kai were so bad. Season 5 had an equally good villain and better characterization for the ninja. The oni trilogy also beats season 6 in everything you've listed. But I agree that season 6 is not as bad as people say, and I love its finale
@@zarkahmed3199 Wdym? Nya is better here than she was in the Oni trilogy. She has a right to be pissed for being labeled the girl ninja and having her identity defined by someone else. She also gets less annoying as the season goes on. Meaniwhile in the oni trilogy she just gets one talk with Harumi about girl power, deals with Lloyd's whiny ass in season 9, and gets 'married' to Jay. She does a whole lot more for herself in this season in my opinion. As for Kai he's also better than in the Oni trilogy as in his character actually matches who he is instead of just a shell of his former self like he has been since season 8-15 (Season 16 seems to be getting his character right so far in my eyes) I just have a problem with post-movie Kai in general so even if his character in season 6 is pretty weak it's at least true to who he is. I might have gone on a rant there sorry.
@@YourPalSozzivix Nya was mean to Jay for no reason at all, but I agree she gets less annoying later in the season. It's true that post-movie Kai is worse than season 6 Kai, but that doesn't mean season 6 Kai was good either. You're right about Kai, but that's 1 ninja out of 6. I also hate how they made others sexist in season 6 just to give Nya character development
@@zarkahmed3199 Yeah Dareth being sexist was kinda forced. Kai's just my personal favorite out of the ninja so I tend to ramble on and on when it comes to him. I'm not saying the Oni trilogy is bad I just have some problems with it.
Skybound was a really fun watch, and I definitely agree on how interesting Jay was as a character. Also I found it really cool how he had to become a leader, and make his own group of unique character. All in all, very good season!
Character development is key. And what BendoBricks said about how he wished Jay had stayed the same throughout the rest of the seasons with his resilience, I totally agree.
I just find it funny how every Jay season includes him fighting a villain with a pony tail, all of his friends getting picked off one by one, ending with nya dying in his arms
If I had a nickle for every Jay season where he fought a ponytail villain and all his friends got picked off one by one until he was the last one standing... I'd have two nickles. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
Fun fact: In Polish dub Skybound season had different voice actor for Jay. Normaly he sounds a bit cartoon-ish but in Skybound he sounds more manly and smart and brave at the same time. I think they nailed it perfectly!
I agree with everything you've said, except one thing. I think Jay did have a permanent character change after skybound. Overall, he comes off as less selfish and more well mannered for the rest of the series. Before skybound, Jay had this obnoxious air to him. He wanted to throw center to attention all the time and would force himself into the spotlight. From skybound on, he's still a jokester, but he's content mostly being in the background and giving other people on the team a chance to shine. Being a jay stan from the beginning, and I was really frustrated my first watch through that after the masterpiece that is skybound, there was a significant lack of Jay antics in the rest of the seasons. But that could just be me though. If you compare skybound to prime empire, both have a simular shtick, Jay slowly losing all his friends until he's the only one left. However, the big difference in character is how Jay reacts to losing his friends. In prime empire, Jay was driven by the loss of his friends. In skybound, even though his friends were disappearing, his selfishness was driving him (not that he didnt care, but he was too self centered to focus on anything else besides nya). It's only after he loss everything that he realized he was selfish. That and nya calls him out in skybound. I think the turning point of the character is when he asks nya what she wants, rather than forcing her into what he wants. It was the nessassary setup for the healthy relationship for the rest of the series. (Side tangent: I hear old Jaya get a lot of slack, with people saying they wished they could watch newer Jaya moments with the old not great, unhealthy Jaya moments of rebooted and skybound. But like... you needed unhealthy Jaya to get to healthy Jaya. Jay wasn't good for a relationship and because of his character flaws, and it made the relationship fail. It makes the ship even better, knowing Jay had to learn and grow into modern Jaya.) But even just how Jay treats nya is completely different from skybound on. Pre-skybound, his relationship is about him. He cares about her, but only through the lens of 'nya makes me happy'. He talks about himself constantly, makes stuff up to impress nya, is easily jealous etc etc. But then after skybound, he's empathetic towards nya, and helps her out, and makes sure she's okay, and doesn't ask anything of her in return. Now, the relationship is about nya, not himself. He gives her space to be her own person, and is the best supportive boyfriend come seabound. I can think of infinite examples in the series post skybound where Jay puts nya first. Which he would never do before skybound. So yeah, the change is permanent. Jay is one of the few characters that has a permanent character change and I'm here for it. He's by far my davourite character in the show.
Very nice argument except the part of saying you were a Jay Stan. Being a Stan in general is awful. I doubt you meant that, and probably meant fan, but Stan means stalker fan. I would hate to see stan being normalized. Like with the awful dream stans, they could say “you just don’t like dream” No, the problem is being a stalker fan of anything. We shouldn’t let Stan be a normal word. Remember it means stalker fan before you write it and have a good day.
@@kjanz8185 Thanks for understanding, it’s just a really creepy term, coming from 2 things. Stalker+Fan and an Eminem song where someone named Stan is so obsessed with Eminem that when he doesn’t get written back, he drives himself and his wife off of a bridge, and I think she was pregnant. I get the wording, it is slowly becoming normalized, but I don’t like it. I hope I wasn’t too much of a bother.
Something I noticed while watching the season was that Nadakhan’s orange skin contrasts with Jay’s blue gi. Almost as a way of demonstrating that Nadakhan is basically the antithesis to Jay; Jay fights with gadgets and his lightning powers, while Nadakhan defeats his enemies by manipulating them into being wished away. Nadakhan’s actions are made from a desire to honor his father, while Jay learns to move past his father’s dishonest love tactics. And of course, Jay gives Nya a choice, Nadakhan does not.
Jay always was my favorite character. As a kid, I loved the whole Lightning-powered funny guy act. But after growing up, Skybound was an absolute masterpiece for me. He got the lead role, but wasn’t the hero until he was absolutely shattered to the core. Such a great season. My only complaint is that he didn’t keep the eyepatch (and his development I guess).
In all seriousness 2016 was one of the best Ninjago era, Skybound will always be my #1 season, they really made Jay and Nya's couple look like a unimportant story to one of the things that make the Ninja team what they are. Really love the ending too, the concept of reversing time and making only Jay and Nya remember the events from the entire season is the thing i love the most about the season, though it was a disappointment for some people. and finally the Pirate Whip is my favourite too LISTEN TO THE INTRO IT IS SO GOOD
The theme song is such a vibe. I love how it foreshadows the order the ninjas get wished away, and the storm clouds getting darker until nadakhan shows up... it's so cool. Also, (OCD moment) there's an equal distribution of how the characters are flying in the sky. 2 are in a balloon, 2 are using airjitsu, 2 are using powers, and 2 are using dragons. It's just plain awesome.
Honestly I don't think anyone's noticed is that Jay slowly loses his mind after sons of garmadon till the crystal king season and it's a shame no one's mentioned him losing his mind alot and how him dealing with trauma went from quips to actually going crazy
I mean, after he was zapped into the First Realm he briefly had an "episode"/period in which he totally lost it by being too calm about the entire situation which was disturbing, and talking about how he "found it", it was short-lived but for a brief moment, Jay stopped working but snapped back though he may still not have a healthy mindset in all fairness after everything he's been through (and Ninjas were through a lot, it was a matter of time before any of them would snap and Jay is not the only one).
I personally think that we need more info on jays real parents all we know is what they look like and who they are but i just want to know more info on them
Jay is actuly one of my favorite Ninjago characters, I also make jokes about my situation to help calm myself and hopefully others and while it does anger some people it really helps me cope, being able to see myself in a character this way is such a rare treat because a lot of people *hate it* but I'm glad they did it in Ninjago did it even if it wasn't intended to be taken as deeply or seriously as I do.
THIS is the jay i grew up with being my favorite character in fiction, who made me feel confident in myself before rottmnt joined him in my strength sources. I see myself in him. If only ninjago had consistent character writing
Comic relief getting centre stage done right is honestly my favourite thing, I remember watching the 5th season of Teen Titans and just loving how the usually goofy Beast Boy has to step up during his focus episodes
This was a really in depth anaylsis and I'm so glad to have found it, so glad to see more people praising Nadakhan for being one of the best villains and how wonderfully he foiled off of Jay! I completely agree, Hands of Time reverted almost everything and if Jay's development had stuck, I bet people would like this season much more.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! there's a lot of hate for skybound, and though i understand some of people's points about the plotline, jay's development here was simply fantastic. as a jay fan since the show first aired, it was so happy to see him get his time to shine and be a badass and a leader. it showed how although he may panic when things are bad, he still holds the same ideology that a ninja never quits, just like the rest of the team. and i loved how this season showcased some of his insecurities about his upbringing and overall role within the team. and i think a lot about the line from nadakhan about how jay's sense of humor masks his fear and pain... it's so well done, and it makes jay's line in s9 about how humor can help in the darkest of moments even more poignant. anyways, i'm rambling (what do you expect from a jay stan, lol) but thank you so much for this! excellent breakdown!
They turned Jay into a punching bag for Cole and Nya. Instead of having him learn just how bad they were too him but rescuing them anyway because that’s what a hero does, they had Jay grovel at their feet
Skybound ever since it came out has been my favorite season and to be honest I don’t really care if that’s a controversial opinion or not😂. The story between Jay and Nya is really well done and Nadakhan is one of the best villains the show has ever had. He’s literally come to closest to winning out of any buddy in the whole show (yes even closer than the overlord). I don’t really understand why people don’t like this season. I’m pretty sure they don’t like it because of the ending but personally I love the ending. This is a “kids” show so after everything that had happened in the season the only way for it to end was for things to go back to normal. The time stuff actually makes sense and my opinion the ending is beautiful. Jay and Nya remember everything that happened because they were in the center of everything
If the season ended any other way, people would be like "lol Jay could've literally just wished Clouse never found that teapot lol" it's a perfect ending with zero plot holes
Having the time reversal allowed for the writers to go full ham on making all sorts of stuff happen like Nya literally dying and Lloyd turning old, which kinda necessitates the ending otherwise the events of Skybound would set off a giant cause-and-effect reaction that would lead to five seasons not existing. Skybound's ending was masterfully done and is my favorite season ending by far, mainly because as you said Jay and Nya remember it because they were at the center of action.
to be fair, when he wished to go back in time so that Nadakhan was never released, it reverted back to the events of the first Skybound episode, therefore, Jay didn't make that development yet
I think ninjago excels In interesting protagonists, which is why it's such a shame that they only really focus in the most boring character, Lloyd, these days. I'm a firm believer that possession Kai was the best protagonist to date.
Yup kai is also my favourite ninja. Remember back when kai used to be the main character in the pilot episodes and season 1? Lloyd honestly doesnt deserve to be the main character, all be did was create all the mess and stole the title of being the main character from kai.
@@Oreo_Editz i don’t rlly agree, all the ninja are meant to be protagonists. They’re all MC’s but the flaw now is its catering to Lloyd when it should cater to all of them.
@@viridia1526 If you have watched the pilots, and season 1. In pilot episodes, kai was the main protagonist in that. Especially in season 1, kai had a lot more screentime than the rest of the ninja. He was the one to come up with plans, cheer the team, lead more often than others, controlling morro when others failed to do so. Fighting with the hands of time. Kai was in his prime in season 1-7, of course, lloyd was the leader and the most powerful who i absolutely dislike. But kai was the second best and the second in command. I don't like how they completely got rid of the serious, caring, and the leader kai. Seems like in crystalized, they are bringing the hotheaded kai back, only if they don't mess it up this time.
@@Oreo_Editz not rlly. All the ninja have their own seasons. Jay had his own like Kai did. Season 1 was Kai’s season. Therefore they’re all protagonists.
Thanks for igniting my passion for Skybound. As a child I was in awe how Skybound was distant from other seasons. And how tangible of a threat Nadakhan poses, while seeing an almost apocalyptic presence encompass Ninjago. Putting pressure on the ninja as they succumb to Nadakhan djinn blade. Whist exploring the desperate and hubris but ultimately redeeming and honourable actions of Jay as the season unfolds. Jay is personally one of the most fascinating characters during this season. And it was fulfilling to see how he developed through the season and endured mental and physical agony abord the Misfortune's Keep: his determination is commendable as he was implored to ‘wish it all away’. These mature themes and interactions were unusual to see in most shows during this time. This was amplified through the character of Nya, who made Jay’s sheer determination well-founded as their relationship rekindled without the disturbance of the other Ninja. I thank you for putting together such a detailed video and highlighting the more profound intricacies of Ninjago. Thanks for also showing some well deserved love for Sky bound.
I like how they were able to naturally set up the conflict between what Jay wanted for himself and what Jay wanted for others. When Jay wished to not have been born in a junkyard, we see his reaction to what could have been his destiny, and the raw emotion of finding out that not everything is what he once believed it was. When Clouse wished for his spell book, Nadakhan mentioned that he hadn't specified for how long. When Kai wished to be taken back, Nadakhan was able to twist the phrasing as backwards in time, rather than back to Ninjago City. Overall, I'd say Nadakhan is the second-best villain to Morro. He was able to divide and conquer most of the Ninja while (technically) staying true to the words he heard.
One thing I don’t like about Nadakhan taking out the ninja is Zane. Zane says that any harm done onto him will be done onto nadakhan ten fold, which Nadakhan twists by literally just deleting pixal, saying that there “is no harm in that” but why does he have the power to just delete pixal? Also Zane specifies that Nadakhan will not twist his words, but he still somewhat does twist the words
I love how when they wrote Skybound, they essentially said "What if the character who makes all the rash decisions, is the only one to learn from them."
i really appreciate someone taking the time to really analyze this show and what it does well, havent seen anyone else on youtube really do it and i love videos like this in general so its cool to see someone doing it for ninjago
Nadakahn is definitely my favorite villian by far. He is just so menacing and cruel in everything he does. The very first time he appeared, knew that this would be the case. Skybound is my favorite season for soo, many reasons, but the biggest reason is because I relate to Jay in many ways, so it identified several of my weaknesses, but also some strengths. None of which I was even aware off. And because I also relate to Nya quite a bit, skyvound, "to put it simply", taught me more about myself, and helped me figure out, who I want to be as a person. This is an awesome video on my favorite Ninjaga season, and two of my favorite characters!
i still think that the end of the video game arc in ninjago still showed how capable jay was as he was able to use his resources to his advantage while the team was incapacitated and thrive on his own still
Seasons 4-6 were really the peak of Ninjago. Everything before that was great too, but the villains, story, characters, and overall writing was kicked into next gear for 4-6. Unfortunately everything after that has pretty much been tolerable at best :(
Ninjago is great, I've been binging it recently and even though I know it was supposed only to sell some toys, I think the authors really put a lot of effort on each season, making some great character arcs and developing the world from just some vague sentences to something alive and credible, with my only critiques being that in every season after season 3 the ninjas suffer a hard reset in their fighting power, in special, on the sky bound where they get captured by sheer force of plot shield on the Ronin.
I love Skybound but I am a bit bothered that the season was basically just to establish Jaya, I just really like the plot and the side characters. And Nahdahkhan is more psychological than brute force and violent intimidation, Jay seasons are so of the best ones in my opinion because he’s expanded upon, but in the other ninja’s seasons his character goes from ‘super cool donut’ to ‘bagel’ if you understand what I’m saying.
This season is what made jay my favorite ninja and although a lot of this development is gone I still think he’s a good character past this season season 6 is one of the best arcs I’ve ever seen in fiction
I love how this video really summed up the brilliance of Skybound. I know this season used to be very controversial within the fanbase, particularly with the ending, but it's great to recently see it get more of the praise and credit that it deserves
I. WAS. WANTING. SOMEONE. TO. BRING. THIS. UP!! Everything I basically thought about this season you talked about! I’ve always loved Skybound and it’s character development for Jay! It felt so satisfying to see you actually bring up how he got reverted of his development after S6, (aside from his relationship with Nya) because I think that is, not just a problem for Jay, but it affects all of Ninjago! Keep in mind, this is just my opinion but, ever since SOG, I’ve felt that the writers were always having to force a joke or funny scene, with the cost of making their otherwise smart or usually competent characters, say or do stupid things that’d otherwise NEVER happened in something like the older seasons. For example: Kai has basically become a punching bag ever since Hands Of Time. He acts more like a watered down version of his already not the most unique personality, he has to make at least one pointless joke every season now, and he cannot even competently fight on his own without accidentally damaging something and than the other ninja get a “Did you seriously just do that?” line. This reverted development also effects the other Ninjas too. Anyway back to Skybound, I honestly think this season has the best plot progression of any other season, I absolutely love how it brought back old characters such as Skylor and Dareth, Nadakhan was also a fantastic villain, and Skybound has some of THE best Ninjago scenes ever! I still come back to the final episode just because of how good it was! Well, I hope I didn’t ramble on too long but I love to talk about things! You’ve earned yourself a new sub! I look forward to your other content! 😁❤️
Back in the day, I always found Jay interesting as a kid. Since he was not serious at all but not dumb too. Also, I like the idea that he looks like the young Wu which made me think that they had an relationship back in the past.
I really liked Skybound. Jay was really irritating and dishonest in the beginning, yes, but I love how the season expanded his character. I also think that Nadakhan is one of the scariest villains, and that’s what makes him so interesting. In fact I learned the Nadakhan Suite on the piano because I love his theme so much. Sometimes I can’t tell if I liked the season for the events in the season or I just like it more because I binge watched it in a day with my brothers. That was really special to me, me and my brothers rewatched the entire show together and one of my brothers stopped after hands of time but I continued with my older brother. I think Skybound is the only season we binged watched together in that short of a time span, i remember stopping around the middle after we were called up for dinner but we went right back down stairs to continue watching. It’s a fun memory.
Really good essay but I wouldn't exactly say Jay is no longer resilient or it didn't stick around after this season. It's just not the spotlight and the plot doesn't revolve around it. Sure Jay complains and spazzes out a lot but he'd never straight up quit or give up. Prime Empire wasn't as good for Jay as Skybound, but I liked it brought his resilience and ingenuity back to the forefront. In the end it's down to him and if anything would ever make him quit, it's losing Nya. But he powers on, comes back to the real world, *and* comes up with a plan all by himself to fix the problem. I really like that for both of his major villains, Jay never defeated them by fighting which is really unique for this show and fantastical shows in general. It says a lot about his character that instead of shooting lightning, he used his brain to come up with a creative wish that couldn't be twisted against him, and appealed to the humanity and emotional vulnerability of an AI. As much as I wish all character arcs would stay, I kind of think some of them fading away over time isn't as bad as it sounds on paper. It actually makes them more realistic than a lot of other shows because it makes the characters *people*. Do you remember every life lesson you ever got? I don't. Even if you do, do you *always* act appropriately and never do anything that's an old habit or behavior you know you're better than? I know for me I always have to keep trying, I've had to learn the same lessons over and over across my life at times.
Jay does indeed keep some of his traits form skybound. I just wish we saw those traits portrayed more in recent seasons though he does get his time to shine in rare occasions. Very good points tho! 👍
Great video, I agree with most of it except for you saying jay regressed in the following seasons, jay's development in skybound stays consistent and resurfaces at various moments in post-sky-bound seasons, he never changed his personality he just learned a season that made him grown as a person It might have looked like he had changed way more because his personality was more serious at the end of skybound compared to his usual self, but that was because he was reacting appropriately to a serious situation when he had to lead, which to be clear is still incredible big for jay since he used to be the first crack under pressure, and if it wasn't for his friends he was the type that would give up on at those moments, However, after skybound he never went as far as to give up even though he would still crack under pressure (because that's in his nature) when he needed to act he didn't need a peep talk by his parents again, even if he was afraid he would come through, being that in more obvious moments like prime empire where he pulled a skybound by saving his friends and solving the situation by the end alone (basically on his own), or in smaller scenes like I hands of time when jay builds a badass bike saves his friends and his mother and causes such an impression even his friends wonder what happened to him (a pretty obvious reference to his development in sky bound) And I understand wanting characters to change permanently but that's not really a realistic expectation for long running serialized stories, they are made so viewers can jump through at any time so changing the characters too much isn't a great idea for this type of story, it can alienate fans that only came back to the story now and is also a risky move to old fans (just look at kai, after multiple seasons of having the same arc of learning to manage his anger he because a more chill dude and a bunch of his fans don't like how much he has changed) But that's not to say characters don't change, it's just that their growth is more subtle and actually looks like how people usually actually grow as a person in real life, instead of completely changing their personality they learn lessons that make them act differently in certain situation where it actually matters
This was always my favourite season, but i couldnt really put it into words why I loved it so much, it was all the small details. And you described it perfectly, Great video, i really enjoyed it :)
skybound fr is my favourite season ever. I stoped watching when I was around 12/13 when season 2 endet and for some "unknown" reason I thought the show was over. THen later I was like damn 4 more seasons. Jay was always one on the higher rankings of mine but Kai was literally owning number 1. This season kinda changed it and now Kai and Jay a sharing that number 1 place. Also there is so much that changed between Jay and Nya during this season and makes no sense to the others. I mean imagine being Kai and seeing you sister going from disliking/ being distanced from Jay to loving him in the matter of a second.
Can we also talk about how Nadakan isn't a mustache twirling villain? Like his entire motivation is getting his loved one back, rebuilding his home, and gaining the ability to grant any wish he wants. he doesn't want to rule Ninjago, he wants to just live his life with his Dalara. That's not an evil character. Sure he's conniving, but he's not doing anything particularly evil.
I really really love Kai, even though he can be a pretentious jerk sometimes. And I'm kind of sad that he hasn't had as much character development as the others. Like everyone else gets their own season exept him. I want to see him struggle. why is he always so arrogant and jerky, does it come from insecurity about his worth or to hide his insecurities. What are the lasting effects of not growing up with parents, and having to grow up to fast do to having to take care of Nya. And the effects of loosing his sister in the last season, I didn't see a single tear and most of the focus was on Jay not her literal brother. I just would love some awesome character development for him, but it's a kids show so maybe I shouldn't be looking that deep ☺️😁
Wow real in depth video! Honestly I thought that the ending was pointless because one, all happened for nothing? Two Jay went back to his og form. But I like to believe he’s stronger than he looks. I’m starting to like skybound the more I rewatch it. It’s such a nice concept and yeah I almost didn’t notice nodakan is the only villain who doesn’t fight much like Chen but at least he doesn’t use someone to do his dirty work. Nodakan does things himself and he’s very smart.
Jay has always been and always will be my favorite character, I have a special place in my heart for a goofy comic relief who jokes to mask their fear and sadness.
I was never part of the Skybound hate train that went around during it's release. I loved it start to finish, watched every episode the day they came out and loved them all. Jay was my favorite character when I was younger, way back when the first episode of Ninjago aired, and he stuck as my favorite despite often being annoyingly vociferous. Then THIS season came out and my goodness did it give my boy the development he deserves. (Sure he lost most of it by season 11, but whatever.)
Haven't even watched the whole video, but you are already using my language. I love this video, at last, a good ninjago video about a single topic in the show. Now for Cole...
I like to think that Jay still makes jokes because he now enjoys it, and he wants to help other people be come to, like in skybound when Lloyd, Cole and Nya were stuck on the island Cole was trying to be jay and that made him laugh, and same for Nya a little bit.
Skybound might be one of my personal favourite seasons of the show. Nadakahn is also my favourite Ninjago villain and probably the smartest villain the ninja has ever faced, he was able to manipulate and twist people's words, leaving everything they say to be subjective and said in a state of confusion/panic where they wouldn't think of the possibilities. Because of that, he was clever enough to pick off every ninja one by one, and only leaving Nya and Jay left. In fact, he technically won in getting Darla back and turning Ninjago into his home Genjago, if it wasn't for Jay's final wish Nya would be dead, Lloyd would still be permanently old and the city wouldn't be crushed by falling islands
genuinely jay "killing" his dad was one of the darkest things ive seen in a kids show i mean it happened in that short story "the monkeys paw" for hells sake
I would love to see all of the episodes made into an actual anime. I like Legos but animated ones are ugly af Also Jay is literally just Better Zenitsu. Change my mind.
I only recently started watching ninjago for the first time, and I genuinely didn’t care much for Jay until I watched season 6. He was an alright character, but I didn’t think he was great and he had a tendency to come off as a sarcastic asshole (I can’t tell you I would’ve enjoyed Jay if I saw the pilots before watching the show proper). Season 6 changed my look on Jay entirely, and while I think it had a slow start, I was hooked from the moment Nadakhan started trying to manipulate Jay. It was fantastic to see Jay not only persist while going through immense amounts of torture, but also to see his problems with his anxiety be lampshaded in such an interesting way. I love it when shows break down a character to show you why they do the things they do, so needless to say I was glued to the screen because I finally got to know why Jay is the way he is. From that moment forward, I wished we’d get seasons that would break down other characters and explain their behavior. I’m at season 11 right now, and up until this point I haven’t seen anything of that sort, which I was a little disappointed by. Hope we do get more seasons like this!
skybound is absolutely my favourite season of ninjago, it's just all around great in my opinion. i stopped watching ninjago after they transitioned to the movie style but i still come back to skybound every so often
These are also kinda my fav ninja suits tbh i love how they all got like there own elemental creature on there chests and the desighn itself is nice i wish the hoodie wasnt just the season 5 one but hey the hoodie from that wasnt bad so it still looks great to me
the fact is that only Jay and nya remebers skybound since they traveled in time and any person could just find nadakan an a new season starts.. Then they could add more towards Jay, i think that could be a really great season 17
the newest seasons has been to almost everyone, cole got a season, nya, idk if u call prime empire jays but, lloyd got sons of garmadon, the only one left is kai in cryztalized, the new series
As a Jay fan, my favorite season is still Skybound. And it's actually easier then you might think to make a comedic relief character a protanganist, and although it ususally ends up being a trainwreck, Spider-Man and jay somehow make it work by giving so much emetional depth to them and making their jokes a mask that they hide behind.
If we really think about it though Jays has saved the ninja so many times..... like 1. skybound 2. in season 7 he builds the lightning bike and saves the ninja 3. in prime empire he is the last to survive and reasons with the villan by using there similarites. And who doesnt love the comedic relief and the color blue....
The think I like about the ending is that for Nadakon, the way he was defeated actually helped him continue to survive. It just feels in character for the gene to do
Skybound left me torn when I first watched it. Zane was my favorite character, and they butchered him. Now Jay is also my favorite character, and it’s because of this season.

Please do more videos like these, i would love to hear more of your thoughts and opinions towards different characters and seasons. Cant wait for what you have in store for this channel!
I also always thought that this was a great opening for Jay and Nya to bond, it wouldn’t made their relationship more realistic and genuine
@@monroe7532 yeah that's why it's frustrating that later Seasons ruined his Character Development
I agree. Prime empire could have been really cool and expanded upon that if they decided to keep that part of his character
@@monroe7532 Did you mean 'would've/would have'?
YES IM SO MAD 😭
I think Skybound is Ninjago at it's best. Interesting villain, good characterization for the ninja, and a good story.
Agreed
It’s My Favorite season 😊

Glad the added a sub plot of a love triangle before the total characher development season.
@@Marlin123 after season 7 they ruined his character and I loved his development so much
Jay is ok after Season 7
They gutted his character after season 7 imo modern jay is probably the worst which sucks because before him and Kai were my favorites
I just find it funny how every Jay season includes him fighting a villain with a pony tail, all of his friends getting picked off one by one, ending with nya dying in his arms
What can you say Jay just has the friend and lover dying by a man with a pony tail luck
and then the villain is defeated with words
If I had a nickle for every Jay season where he fought a ponytail villain and all his friends got picked off one by one until he was the last one standing... I'd have two nickles. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
Fun fact: In Polish dub Skybound season had different voice actor for Jay. Normaly he sounds a bit cartoon-ish but in Skybound he sounds more manly and smart and brave at the same time.
I think they nailed it perfectly!
I'm polish
I was always confused by that, but it sounded nice

Oh I forgot about that change but ur right!
wyspa chenga
It makes the ship even better, knowing Jay had to learn and grow into modern Jaya.)
But even just how Jay treats nya is completely different from skybound on.
@@UnNauto I didn't know that. Sure, I guess I'm just a big jay fan. Thanks for informing me
@@kjanz8185 Thanks for understanding, it’s just a really creepy term, coming from 2 things.
@@kjanz8185 no... You are a Jay enjoyer!
Holy essay. I didn't read all that but I agree.
Skybound is one of my top favorite seasons, I also love how Jay uses humor as a coping mechanism, but I really wish that he kept this arc going
Something I noticed while watching the season was that Nadakhan’s orange skin contrasts with Jay’s blue gi. Almost as a way of demonstrating that Nadakhan is basically the antithesis to Jay;
Jay fights with gadgets and his lightning powers, while Nadakhan defeats his enemies by manipulating them into being wished away.
Nadakhan’s actions are made from a desire to honor his father, while Jay learns to move past his father’s dishonest love tactics.
And of course, Jay gives Nya a choice, Nadakhan does not.
Dude. I should’ve noticed that. I’m in art and know color theory stuff. What the heck.
REALLL the pirate whip is criminally underrated it’s such a bop
Honestly I don't think anyone's noticed is that Jay slowly loses his mind after sons of garmadon till the crystal king season and it's a shame no one's mentioned him losing his mind alot and how him dealing with trauma went from quips to actually going crazy
Nah I just think it's bad writing Jay was just a scapegoat for horrible character writing and that's what happened to him

Jay: * is depresso that his parents are seemingly dead *
The mailman: What's wrong? YOU'RE RICH!!
I don't care how much people hate skybound, it has the best character development in any season. Best writing ever in a Ninjago season.
7:02 Well the postman is a psychopath
I think we knew that already
to be fair, when he wished to go back in time so that Nadakhan was never released, it reverted back to the events of the first Skybound episode, therefore, Jay didn't make that development yet
He kept his memories though
@@JackSmith-fv5iw So ultimately he did develop and kept that development even though time got reversed.
I think ninjago excels In interesting protagonists, which is why it's such a shame that they only really focus in the most boring character, Lloyd, these days. I'm a firm believer that possession Kai was the best protagonist to date.
My favorite will always be master of the mountain cole
As a child I
was in awe how Skybound was distant from other seasons. And how tangible of a threat
Nadakhan poses, while seeing an almost apocalyptic presence encompass Ninjago. Putting
pressure on the ninja as they succumb to Nadakhan djinn blade.
Whist exploring the desperate and hubris but ultimately redeeming
and honourable actions of Jay as the season unfolds. Jay is personally one of
the most fascinating characters during this season. And it was fulfilling to
see how he developed through the season and endured mental and physical agony abord
the Misfortune's Keep: his determination is commendable as he was implored to ‘wish
it all away’. These mature themes and interactions were unusual to see in most
shows during this time.
This was amplified through the character of Nya, who made Jay’s
sheer determination well-founded as their relationship rekindled without the
disturbance of the other Ninja.
I thank you for putting together such a detailed video and highlighting
the more profound intricacies of Ninjago. Thanks for also showing some well deserved
love for Sky bound.
My favorite season. Not Only did it do my favorite ninja like an absolute legend, but the story, villains, and other characters were also perfect.
FINALLY SOMEBODY MADE A VIDEO ON HOW AMAZING SKYBOUND USES JAY AS A CHARACTER
*imagine how great Jay would be today if he never reversed his absolutely incredible development*
He still retains the development though
uh, when did that happen?
Unfortunately everything after that has pretty much been tolerable at best :(
Season 8, 9, 13 & 14 are all on that level of good writing season 4-6 was on, idk what you're chatting
It’s probably him just hating on the redesigns
Season 4 5 and 6 were some of the best seasons the show had to offer
Ninjago is great, I've been binging it recently and even though I know it was supposed only to sell some toys, I think the authors really put a lot of effort on each season, making some great character arcs and developing the world from just some vague sentences to something alive and credible, with my only critiques being that in every season after season 3 the ninjas suffer a hard reset in their fighting power, in special, on the sky bound where they get captured by sheer force of plot shield on the Ronin.
everytime I rewatch ninjago (comfort show), I am always excited when Skybound came up
I love Skybound but I am a bit bothered that the season was basically just to establish Jaya, I just really like the plot and the side characters.
I've never seen a video essay about Ninjago before. this video hasn't even started yet I am thoroughly intrigued.
This season is what made jay my favorite ninja and although a lot of this development is gone I still think he’s a good character past this season season 6 is one of the best arcs I’ve ever seen in fiction
I really enjoyed Jay's Skybound character arc, such a shame it was all wished away...
I love how this video really summed up the brilliance of Skybound. I know this season used to be very controversial within the fanbase, particularly with the ending, but it's great to recently see it get more of the praise and credit that it deserves
As soon as i watched S6 as a child, he immediatly turned into my 3rd fav
I. WAS. WANTING. SOMEONE. TO. BRING. THIS.
The final episode is the best episode in the entire show, change my mind
0:35 Well there was beast boy who is a comic relief character has his own story arc in season 5 of teen titans.
Jay is my favorite character I really love him
Back in the day, I always found Jay interesting as a kid. Since he was not serious at all but not dumb too. Also, I like the idea that he looks like the young Wu which made me think that they had an relationship back in the past.
This is why Skybound is one of my top 3 favorite seasons.
Jay has always been one of my favorite characters and ever since Skybound, he really became my favorite!
I just noticed when jay gets a season to him the ninja always go down in numbers and it's always kai on the chopping block first
The sky bound suits are fr my favorite looking suits
People are just hating on Lloyd when he was a side character for 8 seasons bruh
Great video, I agree with most of it except for you saying jay regressed in the following seasons, jay's development in skybound stays consistent and resurfaces at various moments in post-sky-bound seasons, he never changed his personality he just learned a season that made him grown as a person
It might have looked like he had changed way more because his personality was more serious at the end of skybound compared to his usual self, but that was because he was reacting appropriately to a serious situation when he had to lead, which to be clear is still incredible big for jay since he used to be the first crack under pressure, and if it wasn't for his friends he was the type that would give up on at those moments,
However, after skybound he never went as far as to give up even though he would still crack under pressure (because that's in his nature) when he needed to act he didn't need a peep talk by his parents again, even if he was afraid he would come through, being that in more obvious moments like prime empire where he pulled a skybound by saving his friends and solving the situation by the end alone (basically on his own), or in smaller scenes like I hands of time when jay builds a badass bike saves his friends and his mother and causes such an impression even his friends wonder what happened to him (a pretty obvious reference to his development in sky bound)
And I understand wanting characters to change permanently but that's not really a realistic expectation for long running serialized stories, they are made so viewers can jump through at any time so changing the characters too much isn't a great idea for this type of story, it can alienate fans that only came back to the story now and is also a risky move to old fans (just look at kai, after multiple seasons of having the same arc of learning to manage his anger he because a more chill dude and a bunch of his fans don't like how much he has changed)
But that's not to say characters don't change, it's just that their growth is more subtle and actually looks like how people usually actually grow as a person in real life, instead of completely changing their personality they learn lessons that make them act differently in certain situation where it actually matters
Skybound is the season I watched the most, I love that jay became the leader because I wished for it before the season came out
Bendo: *explaining jay in skybound*
Me: ooh Sonic Mania music in the background!
Also can we talk about how the Possession episode that showed the ninjas’ desires (In this case Jay’s) foreshadowed what would happen next season?
This is why I really enjoyed Skybound. The latest seasons are usually a hit or miss for me. But this is actually made me interested.
this season reall gave him (and nya) the character development they deserved! nice video dude :)
This is my favourite season by far. Jay has always been my favourite character. So I love that he gets his own season
Nodakan does things himself and he’s very smart.
i guess my only gripe is that no one else used their wish to stop nadakan ( i am talking about jay's ragtag team)
skybound's my fav season!! aswell as jay's my fav character :D
He was always the best character anyways
Jay has always been and always will be my favorite character, I have a special place in my heart for a goofy comic relief who jokes to mask their fear and sadness.
I was never part of the Skybound hate train that went around during it's release. I loved it start to finish, watched every episode the day they came out and loved them all.
Jay was my favorite character when I was younger, way back when the first episode of Ninjago aired, and he stuck as my favorite despite often being annoyingly vociferous. Then THIS season came out and my goodness did it give my boy the development he deserves. (Sure he lost most of it by season 11, but whatever.)
I’ve always loved skybound and never really realized that it was hated on until a few years after it released.
Skybound is what made Jay my favorite character in the entire show, bar none
I'd have to say that Skybound is my favorite season. It's just such a fun watch!
Haven't even watched the whole video, but you are already using my language.
I love this video, at last, a good ninjago video about a single topic in the show.
Now for Cole...
Cole will definitely be getting a video one of these days that’s for sure!
In fact, he technically won in getting Darla back and turning Ninjago into his home Genjago, if it wasn't for Jay's final wish Nya would be dead, Lloyd would still be permanently old and the city wouldn't be crushed by falling islands
genuinely jay "killing" his dad was one of the darkest things ive seen in a kids show
i mean it happened in that short story "the monkeys paw" for hells sake
If we didn't have to look at legos every minute of the episodes, Ninjago would be an insane show.
I would love to see all of the episodes made into an actual anime. I like Legos but animated ones are ugly af
Also Jay is literally just Better Zenitsu.
I definitely agree. I was never a huge fan of jay but skybound was a huge improvement for his character.
i really enjoy cole and jays relationship in skybound they are bros its so sweet
Jay was always my favorite character!
skybound is my favourite season for this awesome character development and nadakhan, its so much fun and has so much heart i love it
Jay is one of my fav ninja (along side kai and cole as the CHAOS trio)
Jay's always been my favorite character
skybound is absolutely my favourite season of ninjago, it's just all around great in my opinion. i stopped watching ninjago after they transitioned to the movie style but i still come back to skybound every so often
Mailman’s worst moment in the series; asking Jay why he’s sad his parents are dead 💀
These are also kinda my fav ninja suits tbh i love how they all got like there own elemental creature on there chests and the desighn itself is nice i wish the hoodie wasnt just the season 5 one but hey the hoodie from that wasnt bad so it still looks great to me
Hey, it's not too late to make jay's personality and character depth exactly like sky bound in the next seasons
the fact is that only Jay and nya remebers skybound since they traveled in time and any person could just find nadakan an a new season starts.. Then they could add more towards Jay, i think that could be a really great season 17
Make it season 18. 6 and 12 were about him
the newest seasons has been to almost everyone, cole got a season, nya, idk if u call prime empire jays but, lloyd got sons of garmadon, the only one left is kai in cryztalized, the new series
Nadakhan will forever be my favorite villain in Ninjago
I know jay is the most non risky and dramatic ninja but i got a little mad at kai when he said that jay is the most expendable ninja in season 11
The think I like about the ending is that for Nadakon, the way he was defeated actually helped him continue to survive. It just feels in character for the gene to do
Skybound was such a good season man
Skybound left me torn when I first watched it. Zane was my favorite character, and they butchered him. Now Jay is also my favorite character, and it’s because of this season.
Pokémon music in a Ninjago video? Sign me up!
My sister watched demon slayer and I saw the guy with yellow hair was pretty much Jay
I love its is second favorite season and i want explore jay finding his mother and connect to her while new villain is dark version of jay who jay will fights while finding about the reasons fo his mother leaving him with ed and edan
