"Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?"
Yeh👍
@Problem Hole
It's a comment on draft dodging.
@@scott_meyer Absolutely not. A "walk on part in a war" is about being a sheep and following the the status quo of being programmed by the powers that be. "A lead role in a cage" is speaking out against the powers that be and being punished for it a la Chelsey Manning, Edward Snowden, etc. Roger Waters was and always is very political.
@@blackdiamond6077
Basically, did you dodge the draft?
@@scott_meyer no it’s about trading fighting for something you believe in but it’s less glamorous for something easy and comfortable with social or monetary perks “lead role”but at cost of either self respect or freedom
“Walk on part” means voluntarily showing up
Did you stick up for what you believe in or did you cower away for something easy
The intro: the song before this on the album comes to a sudden fade into that AM radio effect. Then you hear what sounds like someone flipping through the stations, eventually settling on that acoustic guitar intro.
The person listening to the radio then begins to play along. You can even hear them tuning a string.
Then it fades into the full song.
The wind outro brings in the next track.
This whole album desreves a start to finish listen.
Totally true. It's one of my favorite road trip albums.
You forgot the slide guitar solo is supposed to be someone crying.
...like pretty much all PF's albums...
When played in concert, the whole audience sings. its fantastic.
This song is dedicated to the bands former front man Syd Barret
wasn't front man, Guitarist
@@GuinsWIN1 Guitarrist, vocalist, main composer. Syd was mostly in charge of the whole band at least until the pipper.
ericj305 So you think vin and sori are of that type. P.S. I hope you are wrong.
I do not think they do research because many many times Vin is way off in his analysis.
@@ChicagoTRS I mean he was the guy that wanted to do an interview with John Lennon.
One of my favourite lines in any song " We're just two lost soul's, swimming in a fish bowl"
Year after year...
running over the same old ground
There's no way you could listen to this song and not get goosebumps. The whole Wish you were here album is fantastic. The song is dedicated to Syd Barret, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd who lost his mind to drugs.
No it’s not. That’s an urban myth. Waters himself has said the song is about themselves and talking to themselves before the fame of dark side set in. How they had changed and didn’t like it
Syd was a schizophrenic.
Yeah well, I guess both Syd's and Pink Floyd's official biographies are wrong. Also, the fact that Waters himself has dedicated the song to him many times.
Anyway, it's a sad thing we lost Syd.
@@longgoneblind You are wong
Neil Aspinall no I’m wight 😂
Everytime she hears an acoustic guitar or one with no distortion she says it's country lol
It's folkish
Aaron Stephen To be fair, this song does have a Skynyrd feel and David often sings it with an American tone live, so it's kinda like Southern Rock, though their English background prevents it from being such.
This one actually has a country vibe to it.
@@maczetamaczeta189 No it actually doesnt
She’s never heard opeth acoustic parts
If you don't get goosebumps hearing this song, you're not alive. Knowing the backstory about Syd makes it heartbreaking. God bless Pink Floyd.
Pink Floyd songs are so poetic that they are timeless. You can always relate them to many different situations at many different situations of life and history. perfect poetry.
Cool fact. This is one of the few 12 string songs to ever chart. Pink Floyd were always Meticulous at their art. The structure and every note is carefully constructed. Truly Amazing.
It's Syd barrett he's missing. Largely the inspiration for the album as he progressively lost his mind. He was an original member of pink floyd.
The album is split really as some of it is about the music industry, the track WYWH is not just about Barrett but also Waters himself and his struggle with greed and compassion.
@@RushfanUK "Welcome to the Machine" and "Have A Cigar "are definitely about the music industry. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is 100% Syd. I think they were commenting that the music industry helped lead to Syd's mental collapse (along with drugs, fame, pressure etc).
His life was so sad
And this leads into the second half of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, just as good as the first 🤩
Definitely one of my favorite Pink Floyd tunes...a classic.
And this is the perfect way to do a reaction, hearing it all and respecting the song and the band, congratulations
Can't ever hear this song without thinking of my best friend that passed 37 years ago. Sigh...
"Running over the same old ground
And how we found
The same old fears
Wish you were here"
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell
Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
And how we found
The same old fears
Wish you were here
Source: LyricFind
I thought it'd be appropriate...
For Syd....
What have we found..not how we found
I absolutely love this song! This was one of my brother's favorite songs. When he died back in 2013, I had such a hard time listening to this. I couldn't listen to it without breaking down. It took a while but I'm able to listen to this without breaking down. This song makes me think of him and it puts a smile on my face.
Sorry to hear about your brother, Ryan. It’s beautiful that music can transcend your sorrow and reconnect you with your brother. In the words of Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone, “Music sets the sick ones free.” Live well and be happy.
Respect!
You have to listen to the Previous Track: "Have Cigar" . It connects with "Wish You Were Here" as a sound effect of an AM radio and someone moving the Knob to tune in another station.
shine on crazy diamond from this album please,it´s cult
They'd have to buckle in cause that's a hell of an intro. Gotta do the full version.
Pink Floyd shine on you crazy diamond
It's about Syd Barret, former band member who was lost in schizophrenia...
@Nicholas Rivera yup. And all the acid prob'ly didn't do much good for the schizo bit...
This song never fails to break me every single time
Pink Floyd - Shine on you crazy diamond
looking on UA-cam at ELDERS REACT TO PINK FLOYD RARE
Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond I - IX
Great song great band!
24:12. You’re thinking about it from a US perspective when mentioning the Vietnam war. Bear in mind that Pink Floyd are British and won’t be contextualising an American experience.
For me, “Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage”, refers to how Syd Barrett withdrew from the outside world and internalised himself in to his own world.
Best commentary about any subject!!!
Are you ever going to get around to the full album listen for The Wall? It's been awhile now.
Yeah they said they'd listen to it ages ago
@@shspurs1342 They did Dark Side in the past. I don't think they are "those" kind of reactors.
@ericj305 If they hadn't talked about doing it, I wouldn't be talking about it.
@ericj305 Thanks so much for the education. Illuminating.
This is my dad's favorite band...he used to travel a lot for his job...ever since I was a little girl he would call and play this over the phone for me. Now its "our" song...I'm a grown woman now but every time I hear it I tear up.
Bless you!
Good timing, today makes four years since my dad died, Pink Floyd was his favorite band, mine too.
Its about the individual.. going through all these things life throws at you.. and how you struggle to take the path you think its "good".. how you try to figure out.. what's important.. what's not.. all the interpretations.. do you really think you could tell?? and then.. you just find out that... you're alone, you're scared.. you have found your old fears.. but ultimately... I wish you were here.. cuz it will be.. easier... we could stop being lost.. or we'd be lost together... and this feeling of having that loved one or to belong.. makes you say this simple but so powerful worlds.. i wish you were here♡♡♡ love to everyone!
Yes the song is about one of their former band members as many of their songs are about him. He had a bad case schizophrenia and did a lot of drugs and eventually was unable to participate in the band or a normal life anymore and a lot of their work talks about the beginning of their early success and how he just went downhill and they reflect on that a lot. His name was Syd Barrett. He is seen by many as a savant, extremely creative and original until he couldn't really function anymore.
No it isn't. Wish You Were Here is about Waters' feelings toward the dynamic change within the band. Only Shine On You Crazy Diamond is directly about Syd.
I think the confusion here comes from the fact that Waters dedicated the performance of the song to Syd and absent friends at the Live8 reunion. He did this because Syd died not long before that show took place.
Nice analysis. Pink Floyd holds up really well as the years go by.
Arguably, one of the best songs ever written
Probably my favorite song of all time.
Vin i believe this is a about former band mates Syd and also one of there girlfriends or wives. They decided to do a song about both of them. So they did a song with a universal theme about missing someone.
One of if not greatest songs Floyd has ever done absolutely love this band love your reaction an keep up the great work 😄
Maybe one of the most popular songs but not hardly there best.
IMHO
Not their best and i love the hell out of this song
Man i so badly want this video to continue into the second half of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”
IMO, the greatest band of all time.
React the shine on crazy diamond
Sérgio Bezerra Both pieces.
Done.... the first piece, twice....sort of
You should listen to the whole album, or at least Shine On You Crazy Diamond (both tracks) which is simply a masterpiece and one of the greatest pieces of music ever written by any artist, any musician, in any genre.
Listen to Dogs, one of their best song.
I agree.
All songs of PF are greatest
Agreed woof
They should listen to the entire album "Animals" not just Dogs because they would not understand the message.
size tüm kalbimle katılıyorum bayım
I’m two months late to this conversation, but I randomly stumbled upon this video today and enjoyed listening to your analysis. For someone totally listening for the first time, your comments were rather insightful.
This song is about the band’s former lead singer and songwriter, Syd Barrett. The band watched Syd slowly succumb to mental illness and his use of LSD probably helped that process along. Eventually, Syd was too unstable to continue playing and touring, so they replaced him with David Gilmore. But the band loved Syd until the day he died. In fact, even though Syd no longer played in the band, they made a point of continuing to share all band royalties with him after his departure to ensure he was taken care of until his death.
So the opening lyrics are relating to Syd’s mental state toward the end of their relationship and the chorus expresses their desire for his continued presence, even though everyone knows (even Syd knew) it cannot be.
Never been much of Pink Floyd fan much at all but this song is undeniably beautiful especially since its talking about their original singer Syd Barret his story is a really tragic one
My mom died in 2018. She introduced me to Pink Floyd. I can't help by tear up whenever I hear this song.
The song is short but fades into a 13 minutes song. That song is the end of the intro if that makes since. The intro is also 13 minutes. My favorite overall pink floyd album
This is what it is saying: "are you alive, or are you just numb to the 'life' experience? Wake up and live life to the full" See the lines: "Did you trade... a walk on part in a war for a lead role in a cage?"
Absolutely fantastic music is fantastic music. One cannot argue with that which is fantastic! I regress…. Keep it up you Midwest misfits! 🙂🤣🤠🎸🎸🎹🎶🎹🎶🎸
Syd Barret their original lead singer writer and co founder.
The lyrics have many layers. They're about Syd Barrett, their original singer / song writer. It's also about the connection they were losing as a band.
But ultimately it can be about anyone you miss, for any reasons.
And that along with the simple but memorable guitar chords is what has made this an all time classic.
Although this song often evokes thoughts of Syd Barret, Waters has said the lyrics were not specifically written about him. It is about the general idea of absence and how that can impact different aspects of life (relationships, family, business, etc.). It began with that 12-string riff Gilmour came up with, which he said had a haunting feel to it. One of the best collaborations between Gilmour and Waters.
This is my favorite album from them.
The beginning is meant to sound like its played on an old radio in a bedroom Hence the crackling noise . So gilmour said in an interview
And the wind is the beginning of the next song The second part of a shine on you crazy diamond.
This song aways makes me think of someone I wish was still here.
this was an automatic click!
Wish You Were Here [the album] is a bookend to Dark Side of the Moon. I always saw WYWH as a tender letter to Syd Barrett from the band and the whole album is a tribute and a farewell to Syd
For the full context, you should listen to the entire album in one sitting. It is a post card to a lost friend - Syd Barrett. Syd was the founder of the band who developed mental problems and was forced out before they became hugely successful. The songs on the album update Syd on what the band has gone through since he left, recognize Syd's vision as the foundation of their success, and express how much they miss him. If you consider this context when you listen, every lyric will make sense. You started off on the right track, but then wandered off into an abyss.
One of the great masterpieces. RIP Syd Barrett.
Will love if you could do a video on Another Brick in the Wall, full version. Solo is just amazing!
PanterA- The Underground In America/Sandblasted Skin
(Listen to as one song)
love this song. I recommend listing to The Warning, three sisters who write there own songs. Very talented, especially the drummer, she's the real deal.
"My heroes died of overdose" ~ Ideology, by Cazuza (a brazilian singer).
High Hope-Pink Floyd
Still watching lol. Vin, its pretty amazing how dead on close you are to it.
This album was their follow up to Dark Side Of The Moon. An album that put them over the top in every single way.
So when they went back to the studio, they were already at at loss..."how do we possibly follow that up?"
Roger Waters is on record as saying that was the beginning of the end for the band.
Even though they did several more amazing albums after Dark Side, they had reached that pinacle they'd struggled for years to reach and now they were beginning to drift apart.
The band was feeling alienated from their audience, and from each other.
It eventually led to The Wall, which was really the last album by them as a "complete" band.
Power Trip - Divine Apprehension
Power Trip - Hornet’s Nest
Power Trip - Crucifixation
5:00 o that's a good line. Welcome to Floyd. GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME
INXS - New Sensation (Live at Wembley) Great concert!
YOU GUYS DID SUCHHHHH A GR8888 JOB WITH DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, YOU NEED TO SOMETIME DO THIS ALBUM ANNNDDDD ANIMALS, BOTH CONCEPT ALBUMS :)
How many times do you have to do this?
They said they were going to react to the albums of PF. Its been a while
which headphones are they using?
Love this song truly. Do you think you can tell one thing from another in this crazy life where we are ultimately all scared goldfish swimming in a bowl year after year...Amazing. "Would you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage"...DAMN!!! Not sure about it sounding country though...just accoustic.
Great review guys....timeless stuff. Now is the time for Pearl Jam-Rats from the VS album.
That's 1975. And it was a pure genius of Pink Floyd to make sonic scenes. You can almost visualize what is happening, just put the headphones - on. The moment acoustic guitar came at 3:35 is a pure reaction of Sori's body! That's what I am talking about, that's Pink Floyd's unmistakable signature. Rest is just pure superlative lyrics writing by Roger Waters.
It was foremost an anti-war song, to begin with. Yes, the song also covers the missing person, the founding member and musical genius Syd Barret, who incidentally was present in the studios while they're finishing off the final touches of the whole album. Nobody recognized him and later they got to learn that it was their good old Pal Syd, Once Roger recognized he was in tears. the pastel scenes and daydreaming mood, Which You Were Here is all about that!
1st as an OGT from 92 from the 1st ep I can say Floyd and Tool are 2 bands in their own genre. So many similarities from the psychedelic aspect & unique time signatures to the raw and dark lyrics about simplistic yet common issues/feelings we all feel but most of us won't admit/mention. Tool is a modern Pink Floyd w-out the politics!
And with that being said please do a reaction to "sweat" from Tool Opiate 1st song from the 1st album
Yer first guess was correct! They missed their friend Syd.
This was the bands tribute, one of many, to Syd Barrett. Syd was founding member and guitarrista who lost all his mental faculties due to use of LSD.
best review i've ever heard on youtube GooD JoB
Did you guys do High Hopes? That's the best PF song.
Pink F can force you to think, if you you let them. Pink F has helped me think in times in my life when I didn't want to. I work in mental health. Pink F is more of a therapist to me, than I could ever hope to be for someone else.
The name Pink Floyd is a combination of two African American blues musicians named Pink Anderson and Floyd Council
8.3 &9.3? Wow!
I'm curious if Vin is wearing his headphones with the sound on the wrong side. Typically, the right ear is where the cord goes, and when Sori pointed to her right ear, he pointed to his left. Or I could be totally tripping :)
Hey real music has returned to V&S
05:08 Bless u Sori!
Do the whole Shine on You crazy Diamond pleeze, plies, please, plis!
The song is about Syd Barret which was the drummer before he went into a psych ward and he died in the 2010's so yeah
Moonspell - Full Moon Madness
Moonspell - Night Eternal
Yes Sori, it's supposed to be like that...wait until the other guitar comes in... 😎
The magic of David Gilmour...and his twelve string...
You guys should check out The Tea Party. Anything from Splendor Solis or Edges of Twilight. A very underrated Canadian band
React : Echoes live at pompeii
this song is about Syd Barret. my favorite Pink album. good choice.
Waiting for the wall reaction
Might not be the first one to say this but you gotta do Shine On You Crazy Dimond.
Always makes me nostalgic. Makes me think of things I've done and people I've left behind. Please INFINITE DREAMS....by Iron Maiden. 😊
Best early Floyd song “ Ibiza Bar “
you got to do Shine On You Crazy Diamond already
You (all) should listen to Man of Golden Words by Mother Love Bone. They lyric “Since I’ve been living in the Temple of the Dog” inspired Andy Wood’s roommate, Chris Cornell, to write an album in honor of his fallen friend. In the song “Would?” by Alice In Chains, Layne Staley is wearing Andy’s orange sweater. Similar to this song, everything I mentioned is about the loss of a beloved friend, and Mother Love Bone was the bridge between “love rock” (Seattle funk/glam) and grunge.
