- Friends It's hot and we need this Onan Generator to fire up and run both Emerson Quite cool AC's while we make repairs to our classic Luxury Barth! I also attempt to fix the frame with the Kubota tractor!
And as always the wind is blowing out here on the great plains, so Buckle up for this great revival!

Now you have AC power, so you can truck a shop vac in there and make short work of those nests. Speaking of, probably not a bad idea to pull the covers off those roof ACs and clear out all the nests and debris in them.

Been researching school bus to rv conversions for a month and a half and I'll NEVER look at a bus the same way again lol. I really enjoy the length of your videos and pray someday ill know half as much mechanically as you do. As for that pesky wind maybe a loyal viewer could suggest a mic filter for your recording device. Godspeed sir. Editors note: i need to watch the full video before commenting. You just mentioned the fuzzy mic.

@@JOHNDANIEL1 That being said Even I can see that 178v is a bit high, and I'm an Aussie who is used to 240v (officially 230v +10% -6%). That being said I used to work in a factory that had 2 x 750 KVA supply transformers output was 240/415v except when they had no load in which case all 3 of the 240v phases were all up around 300v. Frequency about 50 hz.

I live in an open field cow pasture and yup it is always windy but in the past 4-5 weeks it is unusually strong wind to actually shake our motorhome around. Looks like you also live in an open field.

If you are looking to upgrade your 12v systems, you should be looking at a Progressive Dynamics power converter with the Charge Wizzard, and you should move your house batteries over to AGM from lead acid. That will make a huge difference for your off grid electrical performance and longevity when dry camping.
Man, $600 is an absolute steal of a deal. Almost makes me want to search for one myself lol

Adjust the generator RPM so it produces 60-Hertz (with a load) and then adjust the voltage regulator so it gives you about 120-volts (with a load).

@@MM_in_Havasu Just a note: most smaller "consumer-ish" generators, including portables, etc, up to about 14kw run at 3600, because that's in the optimal performance band for gasoline engines. But they're noisy and often have relatively short life-times. RV-style generators they often want to run them slower to be quieter and live longer, so they run at 1800 - the problem being they're much heavier.
My son is building a diesel generator using a 3 cylinder diesel commonly seen in small compact utility tractors (around 20-24HP at 3600RPM - essentially the same 3 cylinder motor as my MF2610 Iseki engine), and then coupling it to a genset designed for 1800 RPM. Instead of nearly 20kw, he'll be lucky to get more than about 9kw. The HP vs RPM curve is just that steep. His engine alone weighs more than my 8500w generator.
Rather than guessing, it's actually better to check the manual (this one is indeed 1800rpm) or actually use a proper cycle counter. Mustie1 and James Condon produce dozens upon dozens of generator repair videos. Condon in particular uses a "kill a watt" device for measurement during repair and adjustment. Available for about $40 or so (Amazon and often local hardware stores), these things will directly tell you volts and and cycles (and kw, kwh, power factor and many other things). You just plug it into an ordinary outlet and select what you want to see. Condon will adjust the governor to produce about 61hz at no load, and then retest at at least half load and ensure that it doesn't drop below about 58-59hz. As long as the voltage stays around 115-125 during this exercise, you're good. If it doesn't, the AVR is buggered. By using the Kill-a-watt you won't make the mistake of setting the wrong speed because you assumed wrong about the RPM.
As an additional FYI: municipal power systems and household wiring are now designed to a goal of being within 5% of nominal (120V/240V) at the point of use. So, 115-125 is the sweet spot.
I have a pretty old 5kw 10hp portable generator and they run pretty high rpms. With a voltmeter I tried it at a few rpm and unless it's max on the governor you don't get 120v. I only run amsoil in my generator.

A little note about 'turning up' the AC. An air con pump is either on or off. If its off it is drawing only fan current. If its on the AC pump is on so full current draw for temp reduction. Turning the AC up only increases its run time or fan speed.

I have seen "socks" on air filters b4 but usually when exposed to protect from pulling in water
Honest... Replace the carpet with either Solid Vinyl or Fiberglass flooring.
Wooden or Vinyl Plank looks great, but the seams expand and contract pretty wildly as the temperature changes... and if it's "free floating", it sometimes moves around if you don't get it exactly PERFECT.
But roll sheeting, like Vinyl, or better yet, Fiberglass is easy to lay down, easy to clean and isn't as affected by the temperature extremes... Plus, many manufacturers are making really cool looking patterns lately. Not the ugly stuff your Aunt had in her kitchen in the 80s.
If you go that route, get a roll of Roofing Underlayment... Make a pattern of your floor area out of it... Cut it to fit and use duct tape to hold it together.
Roll out your sheet flooring outside on a decent, flat surface.
Tape the pattern on top, trace it...
Cut out your shape, then roll the sheet flooring back up.
Get back inside the moho, and just roll it out... Easy and DONE.
It'll end up relaxing and laying completely flat in a couple of days... Then you can finish the edges with quarter round.
I did our '77 Dodge Landau 34 like that over 8 years ago... It still looks like the day I did it.

Really enjoyed watching your series. I have brought three boats back from the brink. All turned out great. I didn't make any money, but I did have use of the boats once they were done and had no issues selling them. I could never justify buying new boats or RV's because of the massive depreciation. With boats you only need to be concerned about the boat's structure, tanks and power. The rest is easy and usually cheap to fix if you do the work yourself. New stuff is getting so expensive that it makes more economic sense to buy good used stuff and repair and maintain.

Usually the generator frequency (Hz) is the important thing, and that's controlled by the engine RPM. Once you have that right, then you can adjust the voltage on the regulator card. You may have got the volts right by adjusting rpm, but the wrong Hz can burn out start capacitors and motors in your AC. Well, that's my experience anyway. Great project, loving the vid's!

Using the Gen set and roof air, dash air off will save u gas, and a lot less heat on the engine!

6.5KW gen set should run both airs, micro. plus the entire coach Barth was one of the best, they were built for full timers. They were way underpowered but gas "big blocks" were all that was available then in that price range. Diesels were a lot more expensive!

I worked at Barth in the summer during the mid 80's (Milford Indiana) when I was in college... I'm pretty sure I worked on that coach! Probably built the motor box cover, insulated and installed the wall and ceiling panels.

Recommendation! Get A Australian Cattle Guard On The Front Of The Bus It Will Save You A Fortune With Only One Hit Of A Deer Or Anything Else! It Attaches To The Frame & Very Easy To Install. You Can Also Attach A Electric Winch. You Will Need It When Ever The Bus RV Gets Stuck Or You Need To Pull A Tree On A Road Out Of The Way Or Someone Else That Is In The Way Broke Down! Use Caution As There Are Also Con-Artist On The Road-Ways. Your Chrome Bumper Remains On You Don't Have To Remove It. They Make A Great Australian Cattle Guard With A Place For A Winch To Attach It To! Yes New Filter On Gas & Air In The Generator. The Old Hoses Would Replace Also As Dry Rot & New Clamps. The Old One's Might Look Ok But They Dry Rot. Your Really Discovering & Coming Along! The Regulator On The Electric Power May Need Replacing As The Old One May Not Be Control'n Right, Were You Switch Over Inside. Change To The Flip Circuit Square D Breakers. I hope that you get the fuel economy improved. My last motorhome was my first gas powered model and I was expecting it to be a gas hog. I heard that most carbureted ones get around 5-6 mpg. My first trip was over 500 miles and I averaged a little over 10 mpg. The 454 with EFI was very efficient and had decent power considering that it was lugging 17,000 pounds..

I used to be pretty good at rebuilding Quadrajets but I know I could never make it run as well as that Sniper system will.
Never played w a rv generator myself. Seems to me they would be easier to work on if they were mounted on a sliding shelf!
I Still can't get over it only costing $600 to buy. It does look like it has been cared for by the previous owners. As you have said some of the issues are to do with it being stood for a while. Looking forward to more of this. Also can i ask what the music is.

I've been looking at a few of your videos. Good narration and keeping the camera on the subject at hand. You might consider either chronologically numbering your videos or if you have created a bunch already, re-indexing or classifying them according to a specific topic. You could then say for instance: searching/visiting rv sites to purchase fixer upper motorhome - video A1, A2, A3, etc... Drive to retrieve purchased motorhome - video B1, B2, B3, etc... Inspecting motorhome for next steps - C1, C2, C3, etc... I know its more work for you, but in the end it will be alot easier to locate/find videos. You could even add a date to them as well to help with classification. For your audience (like me) and others that come in the middle of your video production postings on youtube, it would be relatively easy to know where you started viewing videos and what you have missed and what videos you need to look at to catch up. Just a suggestion!

I bought from a friend for ($250.00) a Winnebago class C motorhome had my stepson haul it 25 miles into Wichita..as soon as a friend seen it she had to have it...so I sold it doubling my 💰 money(500.00)...she messed with it for several months lived in it for one of those months then a friend of hers seen it messed with it and got it running and he had to have it now he is the proud owner of a Winnebago... and it's now for sale....
I like this laid back comedic, Don't Do what I Do" Seinfeld approach to small engine and body repair its like Whistlin' Diesel meets Get A Grip Garage, Its leaves the viewer wondering if the video content should to be taken serious or its all done for who gives a shit fun.
The quick and dirty: Using a Kubota's front bucket to try and straighten the cracked and bent bumper extension is hilarious and original.

You should not be adjusting engine rpm until you know the hertz. You also should not try to make engine idle or overspeed, manually or by adjustment, both can lead to burning out the voltage regulator. For manuals and expert advice look for the smokstak forum.

@@LifeofLind I agree with dalmatiangirl61. Ideally, the generator should be started and given a couple of minutes to come up to temperature, then it should always have a load on it. It is also bad to just let them run without load. Also, when shutting down, turn off the load then stop the generator. Oh yeah, ideally let it run , loaded , for 20 minutes at least. Stuff I learned from a guru when I had issues with mine. You still have the deal of the century.

Better to run the A/C over voltage, it won't hurt in any way and it actually reduces the copper losses and lets the compressor run cooler.

Take a bottle jack on wood and jack up past straight and then release pressure and check might take a couple times but will work done it many times JT

@@flick22601 Indeed, he was trying to pull it down by laying the tractor's loader bucket on the bumper and pushing down - not enough weight because the front wheels lifted before the bumper seemed to get to the right level. He might get lucky if he loaded the bucket with rocks or dirt and get it back in line so he can re-enforce and reweld the cracks. But for heck sake, don't be under that while welding. Would be bad if the frame finished breaking and dropped the whole thing.
Fill your tractor loader bucket with gravel and then push down on the bumper for more effect.

Love this series, always makes my day when your notification shows up. On a side note, your electrical issues reminded me when I was stationed in Japan, the electricity voltage and hertz was a bit lower than it is in the US and clocks ran a bit slow due to the 50 hertz in eastern Japan vs 60 hertz in the US and wester Japan, most other appliances and devices worked fine if you brought them from the States but TVs may take a bit longer to come on than usual. This was due to AEG (a German company) provided electrical equipment to eastern Japan in 1895 and General Electrical provided electrical equipment to western Japan in 1896.
When I was in the Navy and merchant marines, the shipboard hertz varied up and down also and you would be late or early for work if you had an electrical alarm clock. I had one clock that lost ten minutes a day, so it was totally useless but at home it kept perfect time.

those multimeters usually do not measure true rms voltage, so normally reads a bit high. and it depends a lot from the waveform of the generator. The more it it off from sine the more it may read off. Check the frequency too. Genny may be set to proper voltage when you got it, it might try to keep rpms up when loaded to keep frequency on point.
I do not know how these gennys work actually, I am just taught a bit as an electrical gremlin.

I used to run a tool truck my Onan would run eight hours a day. I made a aux fuel inlet hose and a can holder I ran BG44k thru it about once a month to clean the valves because it would build so much carbon it would beat the head upwards Causing the head gasket to begin leaking. After dragging it out and wrestling the thing apart. I realized carbon build up was the issue.

Good job. Might want to check your frequency and make sure you're around 60hz under load. Also glad to see you performed a service on it right after you determined that it was a runner. In regards to the weather. Same thing here in Texas. Rain for almost a solid damn month and then 2 days after the rain stopped it dumped us right into the 90's with so much humidity from the standing water the heat index was almost 110. I was out in it with my brother picking up a new project for the channel. Nothing real elaborate just a zero turn mower. But will be going through similar troubleshooting to what you've done on the genset engine.

That is one lovely Motorhome you have there. Just a few $thou more and you will have a family home that will take you and the gang anywhere you like. Hopefully, you get better than 3 mpg tho' LOL
Once you get it clean and sanitized, new flooring, and a real spruce up of the upholstery you just won't know yourself. I would be real careful of the water and fuel supply lines. Even dropping the tanks and cleaning the crud out of them. It has obviously sat for years and all sorts of nasty bugs can grow in those times. Even think about putting in new lines because the old ones might be due for replacing anyhow. Maybe also do a fix on the brake lines and certainly on the LPG lines before you light up a burner. Is the fridge a dual/triple power source? Might need a renew of fluid same as the A/C units could be needing a fresh drop of fluid whatever it is that is running in them.
Tires, gonna be up for a full replacement of them before you go away. 5-6 years and they are done. All the time that beast has sat in the sun will not have done them any favors.
But even after all of that, you will have a mighty coach that will last you for years. That's not a bad thing to look forward to, is it?
