Armor looks tacky but it makes sense. It's made from durable plastic, cheap to make without solid industry. It's there to protect from zombie bites, not bullets. Bright colors makes ranks easily recognizable from afar, zombies don't react to color.
Yeah I see no reason for the Commonwealth to make bullet proof armor, Especially when it's entirely surrounded By herds of walkers and the only settlements around are already Under Commonwealth control. Plastic would stop the bites

I like how the fact that they look like Stormtroopers in that armor, why couldn't they chose a tactical green color or something to blend in with the surrounding of nature.
I can't speak for the show, but besides looking cool, in the comics they're not fighting other humans often enough, they're also a police presence, and they don't really face any peers, one could imagine they benefit more from people seeing them and those troops seeing each other. If you saw a force like that, after seeing so many indistinct guerrilla fighters & bandits, to walkers in rags, you'd feel like you had found a unapologetic bold unified "order". Perhaps like civilians in parts of Africa fleeing conflict might perceive UN peacekeepers. Maybe their fighting force against a "peer-nation" or their rangers would look quite different. Though in conflicts like Ukraine you often see those two forces opting to wear bands of bright colours when they're storming positions because their forces would otherwise be pretty indistinguishable. If I was involved in the show I'd keep the stormtrooper look in the city, and killing Zs, and expand it a bit by having expedition-forces of rangers backed by troops in olive armour with white and red markings when they're striking a rival power.
Seems to be really odd for me but if what they were aiming for was a easily distinguishable and impactful as well as uniform theme for their armor, then I guess that works quite well. The red and white colors definitely stand out more among the surroundings. The design, well, it sure is something, to say the least.
I mean it does cover common bite areas and looks a little padded and you dont exactly need a super tough material to stop bites and abrasion that transmit disease. Makes me think of Hunger games Peacekeeper which are cool.

Everyone got hit with the stupid juice in the show, the zombies also seemed to be magical ninjas the way they would effectively teleport around, they always came from directions and places they should have been seen coming from long before becoming a threat.

The armor is for propaganda and meant to be used against walkers only. A scene where they were hunting down Maggie they removed their armor, opting to use regular black fatigues and balaclavas

They should have been using pikes and setting up small wooden fortress to manned by a small group of soldiers to patrol the nearby areas and keep the walkers from grouping up into big hoards and using quick response forces to quickly mobilise troops and deal with any large hoards or large groups of hostile survivors
Honestly I think if you had a soldier right how the Commonwealth soldiers act one they would have better weapons to they would have better armour and three there were train for all scenarios and they should also be trained to make the civilians shit scared of them so they fall in line
Very possibly. Technology to refine oil into gasoline was completely feasible and accomplishable for people in 1920's, since it's as easy as basically distilling crude oil and collecting gasoline as a vapor(pretty much like making moonshine). And oil is everywhere. All you have to do is stumble upon one of thousands of abandoned oil rigs and connect it to a generator and make it pump.

Well knight armor would require blacksmiths skilled in armor crafting, access to quality steel, access to the facilities to refine and make metal...even with plastic it would still be an issue vs just making some plate molds to cover commonly exposed bitten areas and then strapping it on

I'm not saying get some gothic plate but you can very easily make a chain shirt if you can get you hands on some pliers, a hammer, and the actual material which is the hardest part

The armor is for propaganda and meant to be used against walkers only. A scene where they were hunting down Maggie they removed their armor, opting to use regular black fatigues and balaclavas

They should have been using pikes and setting up small wooden fortress to manned by a small group of soldiers to patrol the nearby areas and keep the walkers from grouping up into big hoards and using quick response forces to quickly mobilise troops and deal with any large hoards or large groups of hostile survivors

Technology to refine oil into gasoline was completely feasible and accomplishable for people in 1920's, since it's as easy as basically distilling crude oil and collecting gasoline as a vapor(pretty much like making moonshine). Well knight armor would require blacksmiths skilled in armor crafting, access to quality steel, access to the facilities to refine and make metal...even with plastic it would still be an issue vs just making some plate molds to cover commonly exposed bitten areas and then strapping it on
