    There's one really important point that people seem to be missing here. The Q5 used in the BMW X3 vs Q5 video, employs a mechanical centre differential (Torsen C). Mechanical differentials typically require a longer reaction time for torque transfer.
    In this video, the presenters use a Q3, which does not employ a mechanical centre differential. Instead, the Q3 uses a haldex (viscous) differential, which, in its current iteration, has a faster reaction time than the Torsen C for torque transfer.
    In this case, the X1, albeit in a slightly different configuration, uses similar viscous technology, hence both cars performed nearly identically.
    Finally, they should have been using winter tires. The Q3 is actually a front transverse layout, and FWD biased. So, when the rears were spinning, the fronts already had 50% torque, plus a front heavy design = more weight over the front wheels, and less slip on the slush that appears to be on the ramp. I owned a Tiguan 4motion for 4 years, it's identical to the Q3 in all things mechanical, so I'm fairly familiar with how the system performs.
    Finally, both systems aren't designed for off road use. And both systems require that electronic controls are on and functioning as designed in order for torque transfer to work as designed. Hence, both systems are compromised, and suitable for on-road conditions.
    ...and there really is no replacement for proper tires, I don't care which AWD or 4WD system your car employs.

    This is a funny one, not saying they are different tires but looks like the audi has a larger tire diameter than the bmw, therefore it is able to catch on to the side of the box, somewhat bypassing that single roller setup. Just see how the rear tire is slightly compression on either edge of the box for the audi but not the bmw. A quick search for these 2 cars tire size.... Ø26.744" for X1 (225/55ZR17) and Ø27.252" for Q3 (235/50R18)
    In conclusion, unless you are driving on this particular setup of rollers on a day to day basis, both car will get up slippery hill with one rear tire on ice just fine. I like both brands but would rather choose subaru, you guessed it, I am a subaru fan boy that drives a honda.

    I have been to one of these tests for the BMW X5 launch and they did the same thing. but they put all wheels but one on a roller to demonstrate. Both the BMW and the Audi were very close in time off the roller. Also, to Hogwit's point, I did see the driver of the Audi slightly angle the vehicle so that the tire would hit the side of the roller to get traction on most all tests (first test of Audi was left front on side of roller second test was right rear heavy on the side of the roller), while the BMW had to do it straight on with no help. Watch closely before comparing. These things are to empower the salesperson to BELIEVE in their product. Truth be told, both have a great system. It is all in how you like the bias to be. I agree with Efthimios on liking rear biased systems.

      Buy some proper winter tyres, and thats it! Do accidents happen because of lack of 4WD? No, they happen when people fail to brake appropriately or go too fast around corners, and thats where winter tyres help, not 4WD.

    • @17sylargino

      Wouldn't just say that. I think equal transfer of power between all wheels plays a huge factor, and Audi with their precise torque differentials have perfected that timing. That's why Quattro is making it seem easy. Each wheel is outputting almost equal energy compared to xdrive where it seems like there are delays of some sort. Just my novice opinion. I'm not too versed in all of that but my direct observation is what I find.
      Also, I think another clue as to the uneven disbursement of power is how the rear of the xdrives spins out... As if the front wheels were leading with the energy output and then the rear wheels were playing catch up, as if they were winding up. I don't think "simple" AWD motion is all it takes and yes, grip does play a factor, but in this instance, I really think it's the transfer timing.

    The result is very forseable, the audi has more weight over front wheels, 60/40 distribution, hence with the front wheels on rollers the back tyres have less traction.
    the bmw has 50/50 distribution meaning same weight on the back tyres ( add in the inclined slope and its more rear traction than the audi) so the result is reveresed. it is also worth noting that the bmw had all 4 wheels turning at the same speed meaning a locked 4 wheel drive system better for snow, the audi was just spinning up the unloaded tyre and having diffculty. but the results are predictable.

    pay attention to the quattro rear-driver size tire placement within the roller block. The inside portion of the tire is over the inside orange bar holding the roller - traction point.
    While the BMW is also off-center ever the rollers but it does not make contact with the roller frame - only the roller.

    I think the people that commented below don't realize why this video was made. BMW made a BS video making it appear the audi couldn't climb an incline the BMW could. These guys are showing you that test was rigged to make the Audi appear to fail. How this is not apparent to the posters below escapes me. I literally laughed out loud when the BMW spins helplessly at the end then the driver backs up and makes it pass the course effortlessly. He should've held a mic out the window and dropped it.

      @@trainslife5638 quite elementary: the ratio of power transfer between the two axles is lower on the BMW due to the xDrive being designed to keep more power on the front wheels (less of a true 4x4 system if you will). That is actually one of the things that makes BMWs get stuck in snow for example: the front wheels spin and waste power and dig in.
      That is the unfortunate truth of today: BMW stopped making real cars in the 90's.

In this case the non-rollered tires of the BMW continued to slip. The Audi seems to have better tires for this task. I think it's that simple.

    If you look carefully at 0:45-0:50, you can see he's turning the front wheels to the right, allowing the inside edge of the left wheel to catch the edge of the rollers, giving the car traction and allowing it to pull out. The rear wheels do the same thing, which is why it's able to pull forward so easily. The BMW was much more squarely on the rollers, which is why it had more difficulty.
    Look closely and you'll see it. I'm not a fanboy for either system.

Hannu Mikkola, Michelle Mouton, Stig Blomqvist, and the ever popular rally driver of all time Walter Rohl all drove winning quattros. Tom Kristensen aka Mr. Le Mans, a 9-time Le Mans winner drove quattro not XDrive....and the XDrive LOL continues.
      Unlike the WRC, which is a year around rally and is contested in different countries, Paris-Dakar is only once a year marathon rally. Plenty of time to prep the cars for the event. Where's the WRC Mini? I don't see it. It was introduced in 2011 and canned in 2012....LOL. Have you ever seen XDrive M series cars or racing cars...LOL. The Munich boys are still scratching their heads....

    There are 3 main types of Quattro AWD. The Q3 has the most primitive system. The standard self locking center diff Quattro system (with or without optional torque vectoring rear diff) is superior to the BMW Xdrive. This is not an apples to apples comparison. You may as well compare the BMW to a Kia Sportage.

      +kickdje Ideal balance is good on a road or Formula1 track... But for "imperfect" off-road systems "heavy head" can be better, than ideal balace :) For the off-road conditions, of course.
      Standard BMW X-drive - is the "inverse Heldex" - the main axix is rear, if neсessary - front is
      rigidly (without differential) connected.... probably, certain "slippage" is possible....
      The first Jeep Bantam-Willys had the same, but front axis was connected by the driver, but not by the computer :)
      Note, that now the very last BMW of 1-2 series (and X1-2) have the front-axis transmition, even for Xdrive system the main axis is front!!!

      nomayor1 I was just being silly, but my comment was based on personal experience. I have had better traction than any friends BMW's, but that could be based on tires or pure driving skill. Who knows.
      If you watch Subaru's video, Subaru comes out on top. If you watch Lexus, Lexus comes out on top. Subaru continually discusses the benefit of their "asymmetrical AWD." Personally, I don't understand it. If my car is stuck, I WANT it to move side to side in an attempt to gain traction.

    • @nomayor1
      @nomayor1 10 років тому

      The Bonz Hello. I think they would be very cautious posting fake information and the video I proposed you to see is an official BMW video, from an official BMW test/demonstration. I would expect Mercs and Scoda's (sorry, VW, again sorry, audi's...) Legal departments to only be too happy to drag BMW to the courts asking for hundreds of millions for should this were a fake video. Which, they didn't.
      With regards to the Subaru, I agree it may have better 4X4 capabilities, being 35% of the weight. I still however prefer the unsurpassed thud the doors of X5 make when they close, rather than being able to cross terrains that I will never ever have to, in real life.

    All you want is the car not throwing power away to the low grip tires which neither do. Same tires are good, but there are different tires sizes, possibly pressures, contact patch, and different weight balance over those tires that do affect the grip per end during the test stages. Both are good as both use all 4 tires well. All 4 tires go, and that's what you want to see. The Audi seems to have a grip advantage on the surface, for whatever reason.

    Здесь в данной ситуации все очень просто, у Ауди больше диаметр колеса, соответственно и площадь соприкосновения в ямке с роликом выше. Просто нажмите паузу, когда Ауди стоит задним колесом, потом перемотайте на картинку когда Бмв стоит задним колесом - и все будет ясно.

    • @dmitryp939
      @dmitryp939 7 років тому +3

      да это все ясно. Просто БМВ запилили нечестный видос, где незаслуженно обосрали кваттро. Если сделать у БМВ такие же колеса - они оба выедут, но не будет такого, как показали БМВ, что кваттро тронуться не может

  • @SuperAutoManiac
    @SuperAutoManiac 10 років тому +28

    Это все надуманные различия. В обоих случаях же полный привод в итоге! Я бы поверил в этот тест если бы для чистоты эксперимента покрышки были бы одинаковыми, а так не совсем понятно из-за чего пробуксовка идет - из-за некорректной работы электроники и полного привода в целом или элементарного проскальзывания колес. Вообще очень странно - у заднеприводной БМВ в этом тесте больше нагружена задняя опять же часть, значит сцепление должно было быть лучше со старта. Видео - хрень.

    Спасибо за видео. Очередная попытка оправдать никчемный привод "кватро" от ауди. Любой внимательный человек заметит, что на пробуксовку оси, стоящей на роликах, бвм реагирует быстрее и правильнее по отношению крутящего момента на колесах. Все сносы и пробуксовки - результат езды на плохой резине. Разрешение не позволяет увеличить до 100% уверенности, но похоже, что это вообще дубовый ранфлет.
    Если одеть Х1 в гудрич, а Q3 оставить на тех катках, на которых она выступает в этом видео, шансов у Q3 не будет.
    Повторюсь - привод х-драйв от БМВ работает лучше, что и подтверждает это видео.
    Еще раз спасибо автору.

    • @spivakserge
      @spivakserge 5 років тому

      На X1 в стоке и стоит ран-флэт, которого, если не ошибаюсь, на зиму шипованного и не бывает. А липучка разная выпускается: на "евро-липучке" вообще в наших зимних условиях нормально ездить крайне затруднительно. Поэтому варианта два: или на Х1 стоит нештатная зимняя резина, или там штатный ран-флэт со всеми вытекающими. Если, конечно, там вообще зимняя резина))
