5, 7, and 11 are three of my all-time favorite games. People say 7 is too long but I fell into a rhythm of playing it for a couple hours before bed each day and it was a really nice routine for a while. I think it's built for little episodic bursts like that rather than trying to binge through it quickly.
@@RimuruSolosYourMultiverse That's fair! 8 is a lot of people's favorite Dragon Quest game. Personally though I'd rate it after 11, 7, and 5, but that's just my opinion.
@@AuraLeafstorm Hand Of The Heavenly Bride is my favorite, it’s absolutely godlike everything from the world/story/characters/character designs (some of Toriyama’s best) and although enjoyment of music is subjective depending on the person, DQ5 undeniably has the best battle theme in the series and it’s not even close imo.
@@RimuruSolosYourMultiversesee I went in not knowing much about the series but I bought 1, 3 and 5 for IOS and so far they’re ok. That battle system is a bit dated tho. Other than that it’s fun. I like how it’s an rpg for anime lovers
One thing that is both good and bad about all of the DQ games... is that no matter how much you grind, you are never safe. There will always be a fight with one too many things to one shot... and there's a decent chance they will have Thwack. And if they do, there's way too high of a chance that it just instantly kills the whole party. Also, I hate how useless offensive magic is in the end game of almost all of them. The damage on the best spells doesn't even come close to what you can do with a good physical attack, they can't hurt metal slimes, and most bosses are just flat out immune to debuffs, or so resistant they might as well be. I think my favorites are 5 and 7. 5 because it's just a good story. Not without issues... But most issues it has are very minor. 7 because finding it let me know that this series that I love was still going, and I loved how every island was its own story. I think my favorite is the one where you have to keep going back and saving it like three times before it finally sticks. Usually, you go in, do a task, and you're done.
DQ X is VERY playable these days. They lifted the IP ban on the US so you can play without a VPN and with the getting started guide from dqxabbey it is VERY easy for anyone to start playing in 2 or 3 hours depending on how fast you can download the game. You can play the entire base game and most of the first expansion for free. If you decide to play the rest I believe the game is around $40 USD and the sub is only like $8 or $9 a month iirc. I just got into DQ last week and it has reignited a feeling in me I had forgotten I had. I honestly didn't think it was possible to feel this way in "current-day gaming". So far I have played DQ I, DQ X, and DQ XI (ironically started with DQ X lol). I can't wait to play the others like IV, V, VIII and for XII and the HD-2D version of III to come out later this year.
Super enjoyed this. You spent a good amount of time on each game and talking about them in detail without giving away spoilers. Really appreciated that. And you hit the nail on the head with the fact that UA-cam is weirdly lacking dragon quest content. I do the same thing in terms of searching up regularly for new DQ related content because I just want to hear others talk and share about their experiences with the games and series as a whole. With that said, please don’t stop uploading content on this wonderful series! Would love to see reviews on each game, your physical collection, how you got into the series, etc.
Thank you! UA-cam is not my job, so it's not my main priority (I mostly just stream these days), but I have definitely considered doing more DQ stuff soon-ish. I hope you enjoy it when I make those videos happen.
Here's a good video to hold you over. I made another Dragon Quest video all about the music. A Tier list on my favorite battle themes. ua-cam.com/video/pDL_iLLbWIc/v-deo.html
You're one of the first western DQ fans I've seen who included actual experience when rating DQX. I think it's one of the best in the series, although I have the benefit of being able to understand Japanese. I absolutely adored versions 4 and 5. Version 6 is also panning out well. I love the world and the quests and the characters and the music and 🥰🥰 it's just so fun. I wish they would utilise the races from X in future games.
I enjoyed this tier list, you had an optimistic outlook while creating it. A lot of people are eager to toss 4 and 7 into the trash, but it's nice to know others enjoy them like I have.
My list from best to not as good) would be: DQ9 (with all online features. NEEDS a remaster) -> DQ5 PS2 -> DQ6 DS -> DQ8 3DS -> DQ7 3DS -> DQ3 GBC -> DQ4 iOS -> DQ2 GBC -> DQ1 GBC I’m still playing through DQ11S on PC, and it’s great so far. Also, I encourage any new DQ player to play the games without using a guide unless they get absolutely lost for hours. The worlds of DQ leave plenty of clues for us to find out where to go next, for the most part, and the rest is just a matter of exploration. That’s the fun thing about these games. Otherwise, you’d just be playing an exp grinding simulator.
Playing through “DQ 5” on PS2 and think it’s the definitive version! Also, enjoying the SNES version of “DQ 3” until the new 2.5 HD remake comes out! I’ve never played “DQ 1 & 2” so downloaded the SNES versions w/ fan translation like you recommended. (My first DQ was 8 also!)
So glad you didn't just suck dq3 off like so many people seem too. Its a great game and amazing for what it did in its time but its still kinda annoying to play imo. I am playing as many dragon quest games as i can manage for the first time recently and after I beat one way quicker than i expected i tried 3 and loved it enough to get through most of in in a few weeks but i quit after i fought the final boss once cause it was just getting tiring and I didn't wanna grind up my silent little party anymore. I moved onto dq 4 and man was it a breath of fresh air. Im finding it starts to have a lot of the same issues i had with 3 once the party is fully formed but it has so much more interesting characters across the board and the DS/mobile remake has a wonderful art style it's just a more pleasant experience in all aspects
I'm looking forward to the DQ3 remake being a little more forgiving in the aspects you pointed out. I too got a bit fed up with the classic titles, only to fall in love with it again because of the more story-based titles like 4, 5 and 8. Thank you for your comment!
Finally someone having played dragon quest X. Nowadays, thanks to the community, we can play it in english and it's sooo underrated. Did you end up finishing dragon quest 9 ?
I understand your feelings toward the over localization of DQXI. I was very well aware that most characters and Iocation names had been changed but didn't know that even the story had gone through some heavy modifications. Though I suspected that something was off at times, when playing with the Japanese voices sometimes the English script was much longer that the speech and other times it was the other way around the characters seemed to say more than what I was reading. Unfortunately the majority of the North American audience doesn't seem to care at all about faithfulness. I've read a few threads on various forums and social media discussing the localized names and invariably there was a noticeable majority of people not having a problem at all with the fact that most names have been changed, and in many instances they even liked them more than the original ones. I'm a little baffled that so many people are unable to enjoy something that hasn't been thoroughly "Americanized" (but the same people will be also the same to complain if they learn about one line of puff puff censorship... the hypocrisy).
If we get DQV in the same style as DQ11, I will actually go insane and get sent to a mental asylum where I get injected in the ass with a glowing green liquid every week as I wait for that game to release.
I am so pissed about dragon quest X I’m not too smart and i really hope it comes to the English reading people why don’t they just add a multi language for all the dragon quest Japanese,English ,Spanish ,and Chinese mandarin or Cantonese the biggest languages in the world
Hi Ow do you play with Japan text when you can’t read it do just remember the placement of commands and do you take a pic of the words on a phone and it translates
The Dragon Quest Monsters series is insanely underrated it hurts. The games are more fun than Pokemon. All DQM games are S-tier to me especially the joker series because the amount of customization options for monsters are actually insane. Any monster in these games can become overpowered and the developers know that because the professional versions of the games are much more difficult and its so fun to go all out on them. Every feature that DQM Joker 3 Professional has is a feature fans want in a pokemon game
Hi. Thanks for your comment. I've played through a TON of the Monsters games since making this video, and I agree completely. Pokemon fans have no idea what they're missing out on. I'm insanely hyped for DQ Monster 3 this year.
Surprised DQ1 got S Tier I played the 3DS version, and it felt really unloved. All areas looked the same, difficulty just wasn't there at all, the story was over before it started, and it was so damn repetitive. I loved Joker, but 1 just felt shallow.
Regarding your criticism for III: 1) Did you make sure to equip a weapon before leaving the town? 2) If you think it’s too hard, grind levels. 3) If you deposited your money at the bank, you wouldn’t have to worry about losing it when you die. 4) The NPCs you talk to tell you where to go, so if you take time to talk to everyone then you don’t need a walkthrough.
@@GGHF damn what a shame. i went to see the difference between the two since you mentioned you prefer 11 on the 3ds and i have to agree that the art style looks alot better compared to the console, pc version. Hopefully one day it gets translated.
