I hope today's video gives you more insight on my portion size philosophy. In the info box, I have linked the article on the evolution of the Sunday roast. I am also linking my original video on antique plates vs. regular plates. If you have any struggles in this area or tips to share with others I would love to read them in the comment section. Have a wonderful weekend! And thank you to Home Chef for your generous discount! Love, Jennifer
I have used home chef several times since your first video, and I love it. The first time I was going to prepare one of the meals I ended up getting delayed and I almost put it off till the next day thinking I didn't have enough time, but I decided to go ahead with it anyways. From start to finish not one of the dinners has taken me more than 30 minutes, and sometimes a little less. Being someone who has really poor time management skills in the kitchen (really everywhere) it's great to know there's a consistency with these recipes.
These recipes look amazing - tacos would be my pick! I think your advice on portion control is great. Using smaller plates works so well to "trick the eye" and keep us from piling on too much! Have a wonderful weekend Jennifer! 💗Robin
Australians also have supersize servings, unfortunately. When I was at school in the 1970s and 80s, overweight children were rare. Not so these days. How I manage at home - I serve out the food onto my and husband’s plates, I eat smaller portions than him (he has much more physically active job than me), I bought set of smaller bowls in same dinner setting for my use, no screens or reading when I eat, eat at the table (mostly, not always), LOTS of veggies with dinner, we drink water (no juice or soft drink). I ask for a doggy bag to take home leftovers when out. We both love eating leftovers. Treats are just that - treats and whatsmore, are never bought in the supermarket - if they’re in the trolley they end up in your mouth. Don’t kid yourself those chips, lollies, choc biscuits are for guests or whatever. I avoid those aisles. Treats for us are a gelato or share delicious dessert or similar when out. That’s what makes it a treat - not mindlessly stuffing your face whilst watching tv on the couch.
I loved this video. It’s one of my favorites that you’ve done lately. It helped me think of menu planning for next week. And I’m going took up the recipes. You made them look so appealing and manageable. Hope you do more of these.
I cooked professionally and I try to think in terms of mise en place. I can't afford Home Chef or the Canadian versions, but I think they're an excellent idea. What do you like to eat and what do you prepare often? If you plan ahead on a regular basis, then maybe cut up onions, etc. for those meals. Or cook ground beef and freeze it in portion sizes. Mise en place was such an eye opening experience in terms of organizing oneself. The problem is the fear of eating and food runs people's lives, and they can't trust themselves with food.
We have home chef express kits at our local Kroger grocery. I made one last night for my husband and I. I added a small salad on the side because I didn't think it would be enough food for us. My appetite has been crazy with nursing a newborn and I am often ravenous. I ate my serving and my salad and was still hungry! My husband, on the other hand said he was full before he even got to the salad. I'm trying to loose the baby weight by looking at my portions and I think these meal kit services are a great way to get reacquainted with proper portions.
The meals look delicious. In cooking classes, the chefs always teach us to dry the meat on paper towels. The meat sears better leaving fond bits in the pan for sauces.
I am quite overweight, and had to realize that my main problem is actually undereating. I will eat just enough to get by for a time, and then my body gets frustrated and wants to catch up on whatever is easily available. If you have a problem with binge eating, I would look at this as a possibility. Paying attention to how you feel, as well as occasionally measuring what you eat in a day can help you find the right balance. For me, also maybe a meal service like this to remove some of the stress of constant food preparation.
Hey Jennifer. Great Video. Thanks for sharing such wonderful tips!! I think that portion control is a huge issue that many people don't want to talk about. Thank you for bringing it up. The first step in healthy eating is understanding the difference between what the body needs and what the brain wants... You "Home Chef" dinners looked lovely!! Ben's face was priceless when eating those tacos!! Mr. Connoisseur is a happy man!!
@@TheDailyConnoisseur Oh WOW That's Awesome. Thank you very much. I'm speechless (which is unusual!!) The freezer meal portions are perfect IMHO. Not to small and not too big. Enough to give the body all that it needs... When is your eCourse coming out. Would love to see it... BTW. What's your favorite meal of all time?
We tried our Home Chef subscription dinners this week and they are a huge hit! My husband and son absolutely loved the meals. I am learning new techniques as well. I actually have only two meals coming this week and wish I had upped the count to four meals! This is ideal for busy families that are committed to fresh, whole-food meals. We are business-owners, I homeschool our son, he is in varsity tennis with our local high school, etc. We are very busy like most families and this makes dinner fun and exciting...and easy. Well worth the per meal per person price for my family! Thank you for the recommendation! I wanted to share that I just found a wonderful brand I thought you might like, Joules. They have lovely dresses ....a brand recommendation from Marie-Anne Lecoeur as well!
I'm absolutely loving those videos Jennifer! The whole thing -- the eating advice and the cook-with-me home-chef version. They are incredibly relaxing and such a pleasure to watch! Thank you so much for this!
Thank you! I will definitely do more Home Chef videos. I'm enjoying learning their cooking techniques. Although Ben has taken over so he might do the next one! haha
Hi Jennifer, I have always been a slow eater and as I get older I have been making smaller portions. It's a good way to maintain a healthy weight. Thanks for the video! It's fun watching you cook.
I’ve been doing IF for about 6 weeks. I’m trying hard to get back to OMAD. Portion sizes is definitely a problem for me but I’m not too worried about it YET. But I know I will have to deal with it before too long. Right now I’m just emphasizing NO snacking between meals. Sometimes I eat 2 meals a day with lunch being my biggest meal.
Good morning Jennifer! I follow your same line of thinking when it comes to portion sizes. I love that you became a customer, that shows how much you love this service. I am not very creative in the kitchen so if I'd make new things it would be with a service as well. I may bring this up to my mom :) I also love when Jorge grills because it's nice to have food prepared for me, everything tastes better haha! Wonderful job on this video!
Hi Nikki, there are so many pros and I was really surprised by them. You actually learn how to cook properly because there are step-by-step instructions. Ben is obsessed. He cooked me umami mushroom pasta last night and was so proud of himself, haha xx
Love this! These are all dishes that I can actually find the ingredients for. Some dinner subscription boxes unfortunately have ingredients that are pretty impossible to find in a basic grocery store but This box is amazing. All look so tasteful and easy to make. ❤️❤️❤️
Yes, we love it. Actually some of the ingredients are hard to find and it's nice they come in a kit for you. Last night Ben made an umami mushroom pasta with exotic mushrooms. It was so good.
Thank you for this video, Jennifer...very helpful tips. Home Chef does look interesting. I think I need to work on self-discipline, which is a fruit of the spirit (Gal. 5:22-23) and will help with portion control. I don't do too badly, but there is always room for improvement!
I loved this video! I am really working on my portion sizes. I agree that in America portion sizes are way out of control! The food looks delicious! Thank you for another inspiring video as always.
So true, Jennifer. Portion sizes have gotten bigger. I think, for many of us, the mindfulness while eating, is non-existent. We eat while doing other things and we eat far too quickly. Who puts their utensils down between bites anymore? Definitely an issue in a fast-paced culture.
The food looks so good as does your preparation. Since I've not used a service like this before, do the sides come with the box? I wondered about the arugula on the pizza, the broccoli and the sweet potato fries. I see you don't peel the sweet potatoes and I'll have to try that next time. I have a recipe with a wonderful maple syrup-mustard dipping sauce. I loved seeing "Ben's seal of approval." That satisfied smile was priceless.
To help with portion control in my family, we switched to bistro plates with a wide rim. When serving, it looks like a lot of food, but it is not because of the size of the plate center. I was afraid I had cut back too much on meat proteins for us so I've been weighing the meat lately.
Hello Mrs. Scott:) Would you share if you eat 3 meals a day? If not, what do you do during meal times with the children? Meaning, do you sit with them, etc.. I have been considering fasting breakfast and just sitting with my coffee or tea but I don't want to set a bad example. Thank you!
Great video as always and wonderful inspiration for me to work on portion sizes ( I eat healthily but often eat way more than I need.) I’d love if you’d do a week of breakfast video (and a separate week of lunches maybe?) I truly feel I need to recalibrate my eyes and stomach.
My mother-in-law always set salad plates for the women of the family and the men got dinner plates. I always thought that was odd since I could eat like a man (never had a weight problem). Now as a more mature woman in my 50s, I see the reason behind those smaller plates. Love seeing you use the cast iron skillet. I cook with mine nearly 3 times a day. Great looking cuisine there!
Yes, eating on salad plates is a great idea. I love my cast iron skillet. I was looking for new pans but I have just been using that old faithful. I might not even get new ones.
Hi Jennifer, do you find you get hungry later in the evening, especially when you are up late? I often have toast later in the night as I'm up with my baby and get hungry, which cancels out any earlier good work with portion sizes!
