Good to see you Randy - obviously here a few aspects to consider. I am short on viewing time right now as I mend from surgery so - will hope to come back later and enjoy all the video parts you have recorded.
I hope you are doing well and it was not to serious.
Hey Randy Ed White from Georgia, I wanted to just say hi and find out how your wife is doing. My wife is a 7 year cancer survivor and you guys have been in my prayers. Hope all is well. Also please tell your daughter that I appreciate her service to the Air Force I spent 22 years in the AF. Thanks for your videos I enjoy them very much I am a woodworker but I enjoy all your videos. Have a great and blessed day you will be in my prayers.
Bubba, Thank you. The wife is doing great. Thank you for the prayers. My daughter just got back from Israel for 3 weeks with the Air National Guard.
Hey Randy Good To See You Back In The Shop. I like the idea of the 4 screws to adjust the runout there on the end because no matter how much you try to machine it for little to no runout you know there is going t be some. The 4 screws allows you more flexibility in machinining the parts. Anyway I am looking forward to seeing how you solve the problem.
Cheers,
John
Thank you John. This maybe a work in progress.
Randy, I have missed you. Great to see you back on the "Air".
Would have liked to have seen the nut on the end of the shaft that is allowing the play in the tube. How about a Teflon liner to provide support for the tube and still allow it to slide back and forth.
Great video as usual.
Gary 74-year-old Home Shop Machinist.
Thank you Gary, Not much clearance, Great idea, I will look at that.
Good luck on this project . I have ben fooling with mine on & off for quite some time always with improvements butt still knot where I would like it . Anxiously waiting !!
Thanks Mike. Same here this is a slow work in progress.
Randy, typically they put a taper on the spindle side of the nut to achieve egocentricity. Having to adjust set screws to get things centered is a drag. If you have enough space to do it, that is the way to go.
There is nothing on the spindle to help with this. This works out pretty well in all. Still some adjusting the type of screw to use and then locktite in postion. Thanks for the suggestion.
It is good to see another video, welcome back. Waiting for the next exciting episode.
Thanks Harold.
Hi Randy, great to see you back. Interesting project young man, can't wait till the next episode. Thanks for sharing. Kindest regards. Joe.
Thank you Joe. I will get more out in the next few days.
Good to have you back, Randy. You've got a lot going on, so I appreciate you taking the time to make more videos. Thanks, man, and all the best to you and yours.
Joe
PS I love my new scribe.
Thank you Joe.
This going to be an interesting series. Great to see you back in the shop. I am behind on watching so I am sure you have a solution. I need to get back in my garage shop but the weather has been too hot.
Would a poly bush in the spindle eliminate the run out? Maybe counterbore the piece at 850 with a sleeve that would pilot in your lathe spindle and then it would provide the alignment for the tube. I actually like that because I think that piece needs a positive center alignment method as well.
Brian Thank you. Great idea. I have not made the tube yet, I was thinking of a groove in the OD of the tube and maybe just an o-ring, or a shrunk on piece of teflon then turned to slide fit in the spindle bore.
good to see you Randy. Jim
Thank you Jim.
Enjoyed Randy!

Hi Randy,
Good to see you back in the shop! Interesting project but I am sure you will get it solved. How are the fires down there? We have a lot of smoke here for over a week now and fires are going strong. Need some rain soon!
Take Care,
Reid
Thank you Reid, The big fire is now 98% contained. There is a fire about 6 miles to the east in the YNP, They are just letting it burn, Just great.
Just when you think you have a problem solved... NUTS! It's the nut .
Still not 100%, my still make the new tube. Thanks Colin.
Well what's that all about? Things just get started, and BOOM.... End of video!Okay, ready for part two...and three...etc. Good to see you back in the shop buddy! Don't forget about my scribe. Razor!
Hey it takes a bit to get back in the groove, I have lost my job and I am still in recovery. Your scribe is sitting right here ready to ship. $60. to pay pal will put it in the mail. Thanks Ray.
Randy Richard In The Shop,
O-K-A-Y THEN!!!
Check's in the mail......
Where have I heard that before.
Razor looke like you get a special price. Do you feel special ?
Good to see you back, hope also ok.
Thanks, things in general are good. No fire currently so it is even better.
Hi Randy,
Glad to see you're back in the shop.
How did the fires affected you, I've hear itcame kinda close to your place...?
Cheers, Pierre
No problem wit the fire, just no power for a few days, smoke and ash fall.
If you did make a new tube just a little larger in diameter, all the parts will fit a little tighter for overall stability. Maybe not, your thinking is usually on the mark.
Thank you Charles. Great idea, I will look at that. I have not made the tube yet.
very nice job.
Welcome back. Great video.
Thanks Gus.
Randy- on your next Collet closer video, do you think you can get a shot of the bracket/arm that keeps the closer from rotating? The one on my logan interferes with opening the door to the gears and I'd like to see where yours is mounted. Thanks in advance! -Adam
Thank you Adam. I will get something in the part 3 vid.
When measuring on the balancer, you were so close to the wheels that you are really only checking for roundness. The indicator should have been halfway between the wheels to check for straightness. Not that it matters as you are making a new one.
I did not show all the measurements I did. I did measure all along the length and with the wheels as far apart as possible. Also on the outside with overhang to sim being in the lathe. About the same measurements over all. I agree next to the wheel is not the best to show.
Nice to see you back Randy. I'm wondering what caused the nut to have so much play? Do you think it is wear related? I'm wondering if the lathe was run a lot with the closer in but no collet?
Thanks Bill, maybe made that way. Maybe not the original.
I bought a set of 5C collets and three closers at an auction a few months ago. I'm planning on adapting them to my Grizzly G4003G, but am having trouble getting the closer apart. It isn't made like yours. It only has a 'wheel' on the back side. There is a video on my channel titled auction score for this week that shows the three closers. If you have time and could suggest how to disassemble this closer I'd appreciate it.
Nice
Thank you Kelly visiting the shop.
How is your wife Randy?
Thank you Dave. She is doing great.
Randy Richard In The Shop so glad to hear that!
