Garfield High School, SHAME ON YOU! For kicking this man out of your school! Because he was a light! He shined! And that exposed your mediocrity!!! You took the effort and time to have a meeting and have a vote for him to be purged from your school! What a disservice to him and his students and future students!
The students should've all protested. They should've stood in front of that school by the thousands with signs that displayed "BRING BACK JAIME ESCALANTE." He had their backs, they should've had his. That's the beauty about being in America. We can do that! I guarantee you if thousands of kids would have refused to go to school and stood out in front of the school with signs like that, he would have never been terminated. Why do we allow miscreants to run our country? We are supposed to be a democracy. We are supposed to have free speech and the right to revolt, yet nobody does it? I have very good teaching strategies too, and I was once a proven expert at calculus. What's wrong with Americans? We should not take that crap from anyone!
When you see a fellow teacher that puts in the effort, and really cares about the students..... ...it can make you insecure in your efforts and/or process.
I have just finish watching the movie Stand And Deliver 1987 & I got nothing but a total respect for this great man. I salute to him & may his soul rest in peace.
Jaime saved lives. He was there for those kids. I realize that they probably didn't think about organizing a huge protest at that time, but in the future, that is what we need to start doing. If someone saves my life, I'm not going to turn my back on them later. Former President Jimmy Carter saved my life. I had a pregnant girl friend, but no way to feed her and our baby when Mr. Carter was the President. Mr. Carter got me into a program called C.E.T.A. where I earned money for working and going to college. He saved our lives, and I never betrayed him. No matter what, I will always commend Mr. Carter and view him as being the very best president our country has ever had.
Truly an inspiration to many Bulldogs that went to Garfield High. I was blessed to have him as one of my teachers and will always be grateful for his support and influence. God bless him and his family. May he rest in peace.

What a great mindset. I think there are some teachers who, when their students fail, they wonder what learning disabilities the kids have rather than looking at the mistakes they may have made as an instructor.

Mr. Escalante is a great teacher and motivator. I was inspired by the film "Stand and Deliver". I had graduated high school in 1984 and the movie came out aroung '87 or '88. It's just great to know that there are still dedicated teachers around today like him.

Mr. Escalente visited our city about 5 years ago....and only a few were allowed to meet him...unfortunately I wasn't one of the students selected...but he still remains as one of my top 5 idols........he's inspired me to major in education and want to become a teacher...i start college this fall =)
I saw a documentary on Mr. Escalante in my high school math class. My teacher reminded me so much of him. She was very upbeat and made math understable. She liked him too.
Yesterday was my first day of community college student/teacher internship. I picked Kimo as my guide. I hope one day I will become a professor and show my students about GANAS; desire!
Jaime Escalante is exemplary of what the best educators can offer. A true educator indeed looks in the mirror at him or herself and says: What is it that I can do to ensure the students under my tutelage learn.
He’s absolutely right when he talks about teachers.... think back to high school.... the teacher you remember the most... he or she is probably the one who also INSPIRED you the most. That’s not a mistake.... they’re with you because they chose to be part of your life.
Look at me at the age of 27 trying to pick up elementary algebra in some crappy community college, hopefully a re-run of this movie will motivate me to do better during my upcoming summer classes.

L=R. if you change the L then you must also change the R in order to balance the equation. it's like scales. please believe me, your brain is just as good as Einstein's. Einstein famously said "it's not that I am smarter. I just stay with the problem longer". just stay with it. strive to understand the rule if algebra and the rest of the problems will follow. I know you are saying crappy in jest. However, as another guy who is going on 34 and about to graduate a crappy community college and go in to a crappy public university. The professors at the community want you to succeed and love to teach. The professors love teaching so much, they went to school to get their masters just so they did not need to teach in k-12. I passed calculus with a B thanks to my wonderful professor.

When I taught History, I found that ALL the teachers in my school gave up. They got no support from the parents or the community. I had a teacher who was just like Escelante, but most of my teachers were awful. They were total failures who thought that teaching was beneath them.

Me too. I learned about him through some of my teachers when I was in school in the 80s before the movie came out. . Same LA Unified School system, different area. Garfield was East LA. I was in Hollywood. Changed my entire outlook on things.
Its crazy cause i only ever found out about jaime escalante when i was in middle school sittin in ISS .. i was sooo damn bored i got up grabbed a book amd it was about his life.. read it all and was like wow ... a few years later found out they had a movie based on him stand and deliver ... i asked myself damn i wish i had a teacher who gave me a chance.. math was my most hated subject
Me too. But please don't make excuses. Anyone can do this. He proved it. Community College is cheap. Get a tutor...I did it. I went from a D to A at the finals.

This guy taught one of the hardest subjects to poor kids, could you imagine him teaching a subject like spanish or english or even science...he would be substantial
My dad went to Garfield high school and graduated there And one of his first days there he walked up to Jaime to ask him for help to locate his classes and Jaime said “Oh I don’t do autographs” then my dad gave a confused look and walked away

That's silly; some of the best teachers CHOOSE to teach there so you don't have to pay a ton of money for undergraduate stuff.
