I subbed right after you said "go fishing and PICK UP SOME TRASH" thank you. some people weren't raised good enough to stop trashing places. it takes 1 jerk to get an area posted. because of trash. great videos.
I can speak to hooded shirts, particularly the huge fly fisherman ones. I absolutely love mine because it's super comfy AND I become more huge. Plus I need Ben to make more videos reminding me how much better I am than everyone else because I fly fish, so I bought a shirt.
As someone suffering from severe empty nest syndrome, may I say your son is adorable and its cool to see you out with him.
Yeah you can't say that on the internet anymore
I relocated from BC to New Zealand a couple years ago and came across the NZ indicator. It’s brilliant and I’m sure you can get them back up in N/A . Much easier and more graceful to cast than air-locks. A lot of you HUGE fly anglers will enjoy them
I use the NZ indicators now. They’re bomb.
There’s a mess of different types that claim to be NZ indicators. Can you post a link to what your referring to?
Try Oros
The oros indicators are great, I’ve fished them like 10 times since they came out.
They’re lighter and hold a lot more weight
Good choices! I have a Huge box full of regular bobbers from picking up trash. I give them away to kids I see fishing..Full circle! Have a Huge week! Thanks as always Ben 👍👍🎣
As a bank angler, wading staff. Even if you're not wading, the option to have an extra point of contact when hiking and climbing to different spots is a huge asset.
Or you can just have a long handle net, easier netting experience that doublesas a wade staff, no need to carry 2 small almost useless things when you can carry 1 thing thats good at both
Ok boomer
@@adamhorn8414I’ve used my long handle net occasionally as a wading staff. But from now on, it’s an old ski pole that drags behind me as I fish. I started using it when I was about 50, but should’ve started much sooner. Really helps me get around if I’m in the river or not. But, to your point, my wife was amazed at all the stuff I have with me. 1st world problem.
@paigeloomis yeah I found after a couple trips of achey shoulders that I really don't need to bring the kitchen sink, it makes me feel bad for the guys that carry ladders to fish
My favorite non-fly fishing fly fishing thing is fingerless gloves for cold weather (just get the Walmart kind for $5 in the bike isle…no need to spend $75 on the simms/patagonia/orvis ultra glove 9000). Nothing brutalizes my hands more than a cold rod or wading staff during the hike in. The gloves start to lose their effectiveness a bit as your hands slowly get wet from the line but usually the sun’s coming up and warming things by that point anyway. You can also tuck hand warmers into the top of each glove if you’re so inclined.
Ben, this is Ben. Fishing the new Oros indicator tomorrow. They look good. We will see if they last as well as the Airlocks. A tall order. Keep them coming.
I dated a girl with tippet rings in college… I thought they were pretty neat 🤷♂️
Lmao!!!!👍👍✌️
The nz strike indicator is the best indicator on the market hands down
So true
You are like a good cup or two of cofeefee.: fun and sometimes helpful. Of course I'm subscribed. Keep 'em coming.
Looking at the Oros design, looks like you can have any color combo you want since the two halves come apart. They do look like great design!
Just bought some recently and used them a few times. Great design. The inline aspect of them I think are a great improvement
I have fished so many Brookie streams with my kid’s Echo Gecco. Great call.
Great List!!!!! The only thing I would add to your list is for us bottom feeder wade fisherman, is the magnet that holds the net to your vest or pack. Just makes things super accessible
One thing I'd put on that list would be a good pair of boots. Sore feet can mean the difference between being on the water for two hours or six hours or even the ability to get to a spot or not
Just a great way to start off the week every week. Keep rockin' it man.
Agree on the hooded shirt. Biodegradable bobbers are great, but I hate replacing them every few months because they broke down to a fine dust in my pack.
An earlier comment about a wading staff reminded me of mine (8 steel sections w an elastic cord up the middle). I bought one two seasons back. It came with a cork handle and a tiny compass. That all broke off in the lot. I put the remains in the hatch. Later, I cleaned off the glue and cork bits. I measured the diameter of the steel sections of the staff, found soft rubber mountain bike grips on the line, bought them, and worked one down to the third section from the top, and the other onto the top section. Perfect. Top grip for the river, lower grip as you climb the vertical banks out of the river. Bought a tough nylon holster for it at Home Depot that has a Huge Velcro strap for attaching it to my (wader or regular) belt.
I bet you snort Metamucil too
@@guitarguy4991 Go buy yourself some deer nuts. They're under a buck.
Outstanding. I want to send my daughter and her finacee to you for a fly fishing lesson, if you're open this spring or summer. They're over in Broomfield, and we're too far away for me to take them. Plus, they would really like you, and you would like them. You are our kind of people - a straight shooter. Thanks for another great video.
You can use flex seal to make your old net into a rubberized net.
Oh sh*t, I gotta try that
Oros bobbers are awesome. Completely inline, casts like a dream.
Buying a kayak revolutionized my fishing experience. I only use my fly rod for specific situations, but a hobie with a mirage drive helps me get in those situations. Also, what's up, Ben? It's Lee. Thanks for all of the info over the last 20 or so years.
what hobie did you get and how do you like it, thinking about getting one soon
@@teddypabian7858 I got a revolution 13. I mainly use it for ocean fishing, so I wanted to go bigger.
@@teddypabian7858 just realized that i didn't answer the last part. honestly, the best part about a hobie is the mirage drive, and making sure you get one with forward and reverse. the size kayak will depend on what body of water you mainly fish. i would also highly recommend getting a model with tons of rod holders, or adding on your own. they fill out fast. all in all, they are the best kayaks i've ever used. highly maneuverable and easy to use in precise environments.
@vibratingstring on a yak? sounds fun lol
Hooded shirts under your hat is a great thing when the wind is rippin. 🤙🏻
You convinced me to buy a tenkara. And a few for my friends too. Thanks !
Me too!
I sail !!!! Thanks man. The whole thing is funny and informative.
Like the forceps nippers things. I have found that good pair of needle noes pliers with cutters is the best in that role. Heading our for a day on the water as a guide without them is simply not part of my world. Yes I have spares mounted in the boat and in various boxes. As critical as a good rod to me!
Watched a significant bull trout eat a big pink airlock strike indicator this fall. I was reaching down to untangle my guests leader from the indicator when a bull trout grabbed it from me. It was pretty cool and left bite marks in the new foam design. I thought we may have actually had him hooked because the egg pattern was tangled near the bobber but no such luck he got off after holding on for over 30 seconds.
The Tornado anchor is genius. Can’t wait to try it with my fishing cataraft. Bought the 18 pounder. Anchors are critical fishing equipment for the Mid-Atlantic rivers I fish.
The Sun hoody is a must! I bought a few that have some kind of bug shield as well. Thought it would be some kind of gimmick, I was WRONG! Fishing the night time mayfly hatches in Michigan im not certain there are any worse places for mosquitoes, these hoody’s really did the job. Super impressed
You mentioned buff - but I think buffs are up there too. Use them all the time, for sun protection or for warmth!
Ben! You need to release a soundtrack album.
Great content, glad I found your channel
The Simms Bugstopper Sungaiter is great. Put one on, find some big bad bugs, like horse flies, bees, mosquitoes, find lots of them, and then watch them have no idea how to get you! They try to get up in your grill, but fish on. They lose their little bug minds trying. Thank you.
Absolutely 💯 agree on the echo gecko
New Zealand strike indicator. By far the best!
Agreed
Not gonna lie, didn't think airlocks could be improved upon. . . .boy was I wrong, went and ordered some Oros after watching this vid! I watch every vid, great content!
Also anything merino. Socks, base layers, etc. You can wear a shirt like a week w/out stank and it keeps you warm when wet. I still pack like 10 shirts for a weekend, but still
Love air-locs and hooded shirts with thumbholes❤
Yes haw! Happy Huge day everyone!
I'd add:
Recreation and Road Atlases
Barbless hooks (whether you mashed the barb down or bought barbless)
You put a lot of work into the editing of these videos (assuming you do the editing). It shows. Great content! Thanks!
Hello Ben! I’m new here and just wanted to say hi. This is the kind of stuff I like to see. I’d like to get my hands on that gecko rod for my daughter. Tight lines Man!
Ayye I try and support that guy Jon b. He's just a kid trying but it was a good burn! Hah love the videos and love the reggae!
As always love you videos keep up the good work 👏 👍 thank for your time 😊
Agree 💯 great vid!
You forgot rod lockers! Best thing since sliced bread, 4 rigged up rods ready to toss in the boat and go. One full sink, one sink tip, one dry fly and one indicator set up. Also the Berkley fishing pilers that cost like $30 that function exactly the same as the $200 Simms pilers.
The hooded shirts from your website feel great; no nylon ickyness
Airlock has officially been dethroned in my book.
Oros provides all the pro's of airlock while being lighter, and a MUCH better cast. The inline makes a HUGE difference.
I don’t see any gasket material to clamp the line I wonder if they will slide down the leader?
@@isaacboettcher3489 They don't. The two semi spheres lock onto the line really well. Even if you're slinging line, you can just double the line through the post if it somehow slips tho.
@@Hrogthar I make my own leaders for nimphing and even the airlock’s slip sometimes but I just double my line through! Interested to see how they work
I was going to post the same thing. Got my first order of Oros in last month. They’re great.
@@isaacboettcher3489 They stick very well. Only used them a few times so far though. Just be careful when screwing the two halves together that your leader does not pop out of the slot when putting the two halves together. Did that once and it fell off after a few casts until I figured out what happened. No problems since then.
A Jon B. knock? Fabulous. Just fabulous
Oros are the best! Scrapped all my airlocks and others
Solid list.
Great Videos what is the best budget 5wt rod in your opinion ??
Tippet rings can be tied to a shank on a hook for a nice, and easy dropper setup. So they have one good use at least lol
Tippet rings are the best thing I’ve found lately. When I say this it’s for winter fish in NZ!
boat ride and fishing !
Best part of Monday
I agree, with stuff
What ladder do you recommend? Aluminum, fiberglass, or wood? What about height?
Great video!
Lol, love your channel and I am all over that rod for my granddaughter……hummmmm? And I did get some of the oros bobbers. They are amazing, did I just say that. Keep it up love it👍
I agree with the airlock being the best indicator. However I have been fishing the Oros indicator the past couple week, and it is hands down better. Only 1 wind knot. My casting still sucks. But less wind knots means I can cast more. Stay Huge!
Plastic is plastic, biodegradable means it becomes smaller plastic. Go with wool!!!
@@Demofish93 I do fish the NZ wool indicator? I was talking about casting. But I guess you got to make your point?
you say " airlock being the best indicator" THEN "Oros indicator is hands down better" which is it?
I honestly prefer the oros. Oros however does have a tendency to slip, and doesn't ride as high on top of the water. However wind knots are far and few between. Air lock stays in place, and rides higher on the water. Overall I prefer NZ, oros, and coming in last is Air lock. All are great. And have their pros, and cons.
RE Multi-rod tube... Buy a section of black PVC w/ a 4" diameter and cap both ends. Glue one of the caps. You're good out the door for $25...
Wow you managed to get through this without offending anyone. Impressive... Just wondering why you left off a shout-out to Moonshine Rods... 😎🤣
This felt like an old Ben vid, and not an edited video for something else. Nice
What's the best boat cooler for beers?
Oohoohooh...the Doohickey is sweeeeet
I think Airlock and Oros need to look at some much smaller options for indicators.
I've heard of the oros bobbers an update review would be awesome when ever you can get ahold of some
Flip magnifiers that clip on a hat are key, headlamp, wading staff…
Do u have a link for echo gecko that gives u a kickback. Sounds perfect. Thx
Floatant is one of the best fly fishing products out there.
Hello
Big druide, you forgot the MONOMASTER !!
That is obligatory in yours chests packs.
Your hat says it all 100%
is tungsten beads for fly fishing is out of your list?
Rapid fire knowledge
How long till they degrade? I doubt the screw part degrades. How about a piece of cork?. the original indicator, but it isn't really a float to hold your fly up, was some hi viz fly line threaded over the leader. Never lost one. You have to ask yourself, at least if you aren't a guide, how much do you need to injure another fish, at the cost of more trash in the rivers.
How does the echo compare to the tenkara? I’ve seen vids of u having your kids fish with tenkara so I assume I know the answer is obviously tenkara
Biodegradable means it breaks down to smaller plastics = no good. As said before a woollen indicator like the NZ strike indicators are by fair and away the best!!!!
I'm sorry but hooded shirts just aint it. I've seen too many 16 year olds in Huk hooded shirts jack-knife their dads Ranger into the tailgate of their dads F250. I'd rather wear full tweed and smoke a pipe like the good old days.
Keep making fun of the googan squad and I will be a follower for life.
bro.. full brim hats like a tilley way to go
Matte black spray paint
There was a scientific study performed in the late 90s, Field and Stream referenced it. Sparkle or flash from shiny watches/ rings/ jewelry , shiny equipment like hemostats or reels or sunglasses will spook fish and put them down (bright clothing also)
I spray paint anything reflective with Matt flat black spray paint. I wear A black digital watch. Dull clothing.
My friends make fun of me, but I catch more fish than those clowns!
I can see it now Black Ops digital fishing gear . Brilliant:-)
Hell yeah 👍. Back in Black
My best day of fishing was in a tie-dye tshirt. We might need to revisit that experiment
Kids … should fish with worms dug up in the backyard for sunnies using bobbers and the hood old zebco 202 reel. Give em a few years before turning them into fly fishing a-holes like we all do.
Yada yada tippet rings
Ghost nets are so YOU can't see them. The idea is you can take pictures of the fish in the water without seeing the net bag. That way you can take a nice picture without touching the fish.
Hey I only put the hat over the hood when the wind keeps blowing the hood off.
I don't really agree with plastic or foam floaters at all because i think they add to much weight, this year i started to use raw wool and small silicon tubes (use for carp fishing i think), just put a loop of your leader through a piece of the silicon tube, catch the wool and pull to lock. it weight nothing, float well, is adjustable, very easy to use and cost almost nothing.
What ghost net?
Air locks are great till you lose the little screw
Till you lose the little NUT! 😁
Oros indicator is a much better design than the air lock....which was still a better design than the traditional indicator. Those little rings on the air lock drive me nuts....I guess I suck at fly fishing.
You ever use yarn with some gink applied? To me I can cast better
I think one of the best pieces of gear is a good Guide.. I catch fish with em almost every time.
I know where that hot dog boat is! It really exists lol. I can prove it with pictures too
You forgot about tippet rings and fly clips :p
Can you review a tenkara rod
New indicators are great but they are a bit pricey.
Praise Tom
No tippet rings? Do you even euro nymph, bro?
I won’t take any Jon B slander 😂😂😂
OROS not as good IMO. they often slip and that little rubber washer on the AIR LOCK serves a great purpose when locked down . it stays locked down. My only complaint is that both companies should make a smaller version for small nymphs, so you can see the slightest bump.
sorry yes I only go fishing with one rod and I do not break it. Also, it's best not to net fish at all . bring them shallow and on hook them without touching them.. if they need reviving you fought them too long and you need heavier gear for your skillset.
Have to disagree with not using a net with smaller fish it is probably better to just unhook them with out netting them but with larger fish netting them reduces fight time and prevents them from thrashing in the shallows. Seen it way too often salmon fishing where people drag fish thrashing in inches of water in order to tail it. Also if you are going to take a photo or need to grab your forceps to remove the hook you can let the fish swim in your net wile you get prepped especially with larger net baskets.
@@nathanduifhuis5998 netting a fish forces you to handle a fish often times before it's ready to be handled. I have found that bringing a fish into say 6 inches of water and if you keep the line tight they do not thrash. It's been my experience with salmon and steelhead fishing that two things are true. 1. People use tackle that is too light and 2. People don't fight fish hard enough..
I would however say that we are splitting hairs. The simple fact is that catch and release works...
