  • The key differences between Chromoly & Hi-Tensile Steel.
    THEY ARE NOT THE SAME:
    (Hi Tensile Steel is High Carbon Steel used in general bicycle manufacturing & to save money)
    (Chromoly is Steel + CHROmium & MOLYbdenum used for bicycles that see excessive daily stress)
    Chromoly is the standard today in freestyle bmx. Not because of opinion but due to the fact that all most 100% of today's professionals dont use hi-tensile anymore.
    Thank You All For Watching

    Good video but I have used steel over chromoly many times with some insane dirt jumps and I have never bent a fork or a frame, so chromoly is not a need.

      You weigh 83 lbs though. What happens when we at 185 lbs throw some triple insanity jumps at a frame? Things squish and welds break and then the forest goes silent.

    I would recommend hi-ten steel for beginners because after two years when the bike starts to wear down you could possibly be a pro and want to buy your own professional bmx bike. So the hi-ten steel is perfect.

      +Jeclonax I would like to think so but inexperienced riders usually crash more and beat their bikes up a tad bit more than professionals therefore needing chromoly throughoutbtue whole learning process..

      Not to mention if you can do tricks on steel bikes you can do them on crhomoly just as easy... The don't want to tell you cromoly breaks too.

      That's why bmx is going down hill you tell kids they can't start on a cheap bike they have to buy a 600.oo bike. Parents are not going to buy that for a kid 6 years old and have to buy another one when they reach 11.

      If you're a pro are you actually buying your own bike? Apparently it only takes 2 years from beginner to pro though 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Bikes made of hi-tensil steel are not so bad after all. I had a generic bike made of standard steel and I practiced bunny hop with that. Other parts of my bike as the rims broke after so much time of use but the steel frame never broke or bent.
    I agree with the idea of use a chromoly frame instead of hi-tensil steel if you are a professional rider. But if you are an amateur rider who only rides on the street, you can practice and have fun using a well made hi-tensil steel frame while you are saving money for buy a professional street bike later.
    Expensive chromoly frames are only for sponsored riders or juniors who have a high social status and can start with a chromoly frame.

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  7 років тому

      +Freeguy Fenikkusu I still disagree with that. Being someone that has rode for all their life I've had countless types of all kinds of bikes. I've owned and rode dozens of both. Even when I was a novice who could only bunny hop my crashes, bails & slips on grinds were pretty bad like most beginners and ended up spending a lot of time with out a bike because I couldn't afford a new frame every 6 months.. (I myself have personally broken over 5 hi-tensile frames & the majority of those breaks were when I was a beginner). If all you are doing is bunny hops & cruising than a hi tensile steel bike is fine but just bunny hops are not much of bmx riding to be honest. If you want to progress your riding and learn new tricks a hi tensile steel bike will more than likely not last while learning those tricks. Just a few. Hi tensile steel bikes of today are "generally" made with thinner tubing than the bikes of a couple decades ago. I strongly argue that chromoly isn't just for professionals but for ANYONE wanting to be serious about learning new tricks from any skill level.

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  7 років тому

      +Freeguy Fenikkusu It all comes down to your personal riding preference. If someone wants to be serious with learning new tricks, pushing their limits & wants to ride every day than a hi tensile steel bike if today will start to bend and wear down too quick for the hundreds of dollars spent on it. In the long run (if you are planning to be serious with trick learning & ride every day) than a full chromoly bike is a better money saving investment since it can structurally last you over twice as long as a tensile steel bike..

    So here is my experience with hi ten steel.
    So my stock forks are 2018 Haro Blv est 78 forks. (Its also the whole bike if you want to know what im riding) and the forks held up alot of shit eating, and more shit eating. Like airing out ot the bowl by like 6ft and shit.
    But I went down into my city and rode for a little bit. And I did a little drop off of a 2 foot ledge, and they bent. I still rode with then for the rest of the day. But if you have those forks for over a period of time and use. Get odyssey r32 or r25 forks because they are 👌
    And that hi tensile steel parts weigh more then chromeoly parts because hi tens steel is a weak metal, so they make more layers so it wont break on you after jumping off a curb.
    But if you do get new forks on your stock bike, get a extra spacer or two because some forks have a longer neck then others. And if your neck is longer, and you have no spacers. You cant put your stem on.

    What you are calling chromoly is chromium and molybdemum steel. Pure steel is only iron and carbon. "Steel" is usually iron with varying amounts of carbon but also with other elements added such as nickel, chromium, vanadium, chromium, molybdenum.

      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  6 років тому

    How do you tell if a bike is chromoly when buying used

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  Рік тому

      It's very hard to tell by looking at the material of the bike itself. There is no visual difference between chomoly and regular steel since chromoly only has 2 extra elements incorporated that changes the overall molecular/tensil strength of the metal. Best thing to do is try your hardest to identify "Make & Model" so you can cross reference the specifications with the Manufacturer.

    I use to ride a full chromoly bike but I some how managed to brake and bend several parts it’s better to never cheap out on upgrade parts.

    • @jimmys249
      @jimmys249 5 років тому

      It’s pretty important I think to understand that titanium is actually not nearly as hard as heat treated chromoly steel. It is, however, much lighter. That’s really the purpose of titanium, fantastic strength to weight. Typically chromoly parts are much stronger, but also much heavier.
      It’s worth mentioning that there’s a difference between hardness and stiffness. It’s a little more complicated to understand, but some metals like titanium or aluminum can be very stiff and maintain structural shape while being less hard, meaning they won’t resist impact or grinding very well. Chromoly (or any hardened high carbon steel) is much HARDER meaning it will not dent or wear away from sliding or grinding as easily. Again, the trade off here is that it’s heavier. “High tensile steel” as used in cheaper bike parts is not that hard, and still heavy.
      Not sure why I felt compelled to post this but there ya go.

    Great video. I am not into BMX but have recently seen a bike of interest here in NYC, a mountain bike that is made of Hi-Tensile steel. If I were to get this I am not looking to take off road too often but living in the city there are the city street that bumps and dips etc at times if not when on a good paved bike riding path. Would you still not recommend a Hi-Tensile frame even for daily commuting if one is not doing BMX jumps and tricks with a mountain bike. Would it be okay to do some off-road? Thanks again for the great video.

      +Subwoofer Geinious Well It is all most impossible to tell by just looking at the metal or knocking on it. Both metals are magnetic and look similar. What you should do is ask what model the bike is & search it's sale description through Google. The sale decriptions will tell you what it has. Other than that It is next to impossible to tell the difference by eye.

    • @spicyalien4089

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  8 років тому

      +Subwoofer Geinious You won't be able to definitively tell with out knowing the model. It's very easy to fool someone with private bike sales... My suggestion is to check all the weld areas really close for cracks. Also look down the length of the frame like a gun sight. Hi tensile steel is prone to being bent in the rear end from lots of 180s.. If the frame is straight & there are no cracks on it than it's not a bad deal if he isn't asking too much. Not knowing that info on the bike he's selling should keep him from selling it at a high price.

    If u made a bmx frame with very thick steel like 1/2 thick , whouldnt it be pretty much indestructible , heavy , but tough ?

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  7 років тому

      Yes you are correct. Our information on hi-tensile steel is based off the fact that today's industry is making them thin to match the weight of chromoly editions. The thinner the tube wall is, the less outside force it can take.

    Everything on my bike minus the frame is cromo but I only ride a flat rail in the front drive way and the occasional ledge. (Of course I hop over stuff and do gaps that won't kill me) hopefully the HI-Ten frame will be ok. At least I can buy a used cromo frame later.

    • @eatmysalt291

      When grinding, watch hitting your chain stay bar on a ledge. If that’s all the stuff you’re doing, that will be where your frame fails at. Back in 2005 I cracked 2 DK General Lee, hi tensile frames in a couple months of each other at the chain stay from grinding.

Hi-tensile steel, partial chromoly & full chromoly. Full chromoly is sometimes too much and too expensive for beginners so you can choose partial chromoly like the ones I listed.

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  7 років тому

      +Cosmo John I wasn't very specific in the video.. The carbon is not really the catalyst in the metal being stronger. Chromoly is lighter but stronger all around because it is a metal alloy. This means it contains a few different elements to strengthen the molecular structure of the metal. Chromoly is always lighter but stronger than Hi-tensile steel. The only reason why every company doesn't use it, since it seems so amazing, is because of high costs.

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  7 років тому +1

      Yes 1 piece fork is THE kind you want. Strongest style.. There are 1 & 2 piece forks. To put it easy: 2pc forks usually break where the 2 pieces are made together & 1pc forks are manufactured to where it is welded together & that joint is gone. The level of build quality on a 1pc is #1. If the bike is mint and in working order, like new, than it's a good deal. Can't buy a 2017 bike like it for less than €370.

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL

      Sanko tubing is Chromoly...there is nothing different It's just the company name. Saying a bike has Sanko tubing just means it has Japan manufactured chromoly tubing. Sanko is just popular for making good quality Tubing. It's not actually different or anything. It's mostly just an advertising gimmick. So.. saying a bike is Chromoly means it's made out of steel, saying it's made from Sanko just means it's made out of steel from japan.

      Hi ten is just a name for what is commonly known as 1020 steel which is a relatively low carbon steel containing just iron and .2%carbon, that is it. Steel, by definition is anything that contains mostly iron but has carbon added.
      Chromoly is known as 4130 although there are others. Its called chromoly because its a steel(iron and carbon) but with Chrome and molybdenum added. The carbon content in 4130 is also quite low at .3% but the alloying elemts greatly improve various measures of strength and durability such as ductility, ultimate tensile strength and fatigue strength as well as elongation, all properties that affect the "durability" of a bike frame.
      The addition of carbon in steels is not always good, depending on what properties you want. Increasing the carbon content increases its hardness which increases its strength but lowers its toughness. For example, a high carbon bar will resist bending better than the low carbon bar but when pushed, may fail or break sooner than the low carbon bar which would more likely bend, see?
      For example, many knife makers choose a high carbon content for their knives with a steel called 1095 which has .95% carbon. They choose it because the increased carbon forms more "carbides" ,the hard tiny things in steel or your knife that does the cutting and keeps it cutting longer. A sword maker would choose a lower carbon steel like a 1070 because a sword is long and needs toughness or the ability to bend before snapping and is not as hard, has less carbides and will not hold its edge as long due to this but needs the lower carbon so as to not snap if bent.

      The BNC (Bmx News Channel) Cheers, not trying to come across as a smartass but its hard not to, eh?
      Just that there is a lot of misinformation and confusion, especially on BMX forums regarding steel. I find it an interesting subject as I like both knives and bikes both use steel.
      The best thing anyone can do is do a simple search and read up on it for themselves.Its can be kinda geeky but interesting nonetheless.
      Also, a huge impact on how durable a bike is can be the geometry of the frame and the way the tubes are put together as well as their size and shape.

It's closely set up like my bike in the video... Hope you have a blast on it and thank you for the Sub!! Really appreciate it friend!
