    My very best friend in high school was a girl named Kelly, she had down syndrome but she always came out with us and did crazy teenager stuff, she ended up with one of the Most respectable guys in our school. Everyone loved her smile, her jokes..so beautiful. She is a nurse now at a dialysis center. I haven't done a damn thing with my life. I would be blessed to have a child as wonderful as that

    You don't normally see individuals with Down Syndrome and their families (or with any disability) being presented speaking in a normal every day way. It is always as the "other" and/or about their "problem". As an individual with a disability, all I ever want is to see more and more normalizing of "differentness", so that people can just be people and not face constantly being seen as "not normal", whatever normal is, right? That's what people need to get, that there's no ideal human and constructing an idea of one harms everyone. I first understood this concept for myself in 1986 when I heard a song by Depeche Mode "People are People." :) Btw, abortion was recommended to my mother. They said I would be mentally and physically disabled. Turns out I have a Master's degree and a physical disability to be sure, but not that severe. Doctors can tell you possible outcomes, but they can't determine the value that little human is going to contribute to humanity and the world.

    Not only do I work for an advocacy group for those with Down, I am proud to say that most of our clients and families have become very close to me and my heart over the last 28 years. I have seen them either grow up or move on to an older age. You really don't see many videos featuring older citizens with Down, as there is this assumption they are self-sustaining. Well, yes, that is indeed true, of sorts, but we give them all the love and support they could ever ask for. This video actually made me always continue to do my job for another 20 years or if I am forced to retire. That inspiring. Thank you for the upload, AJ+! And on a side note...I have been married now to my wife 30 years this in August; she too has Down and is as spunky and sassy today as when I first met her!

    For those of you who think these people shouldn't have been born, Ask the parents what they think. There is a FOUR YEAR waiting list of couples waiting to adopt a downs baby and we're aborting them. So, who doesn't want who?

    • @zumurudlilit
      @zumurudlilit 6 років тому +2

      Tell them to come to Poland. Plenty of abandoned DS children. Really no need to wait.

    • @Anna999994
      @Anna999994 6 років тому

      Because actifists encourage to born them even when the parent don't want it, and give free to adoption. But we never hear that some of there adopt the children, even if they cant have their own. So they haven't got parents, and strange people look at them, they are disabled and can't defend themselfes like undisabled kids. And it's forever, cuz other kids grow up, but they are disabled, and stay there forever.

      Are any of us ever completely independent? Is it always terrible to live with others or get help from them? I don't think so. I think all people need to have power over their own life and to be able to make choices, but it's OK to also give and receive help from others :).
      It's true that we really often underestimate the abilities of people with Down Syndrome and they can do so much more if they have the opportunities. But also everyone is different and I think those who can't live independently can still have great lives.

    "No known causes for why this happens"...it's called nondisjunction. It's not a mystery how a fetus gets an extra chromosome.

    • @hilariocastrorocha8630
      @hilariocastrorocha8630 8 років тому

      Can you explain how people get these and what a chromosome is and how to prevent it? I would like to know thanks

    • @RosesNeverFade1216
      @RosesNeverFade1216 7 років тому

      Pepe The Frog Chromosome 21 for Down Syndrome. Basically when the cell divides, it splits 3 and 1 between the two copies instead of 2 and 2 likes it's supposed to. Down Syndrome individuals come from the cells with 3 copies of c 21. You can't prevent it. It's just something that happens at the cellular level.

    If DS people appear this way too us, I am curious how they view "us".

    • @cheeseburger8486
      @cheeseburger8486 4 роки тому

      They probably just see us as normal and see themselves as different if they're higher functioning. Unless they grow up exclusively around people with down syndrome, we would be the norm to them.

    I feel like such a weak person bc I don't know how I'd cope if it were my child. I imagine feeling so hopeless, dejected and much like a failure. the compassionate, rational side of me knows this isn't true and canteen offer words of advice but man I doubt if it were my reality I could do it and that makes me feel like trash just admitting that.

    I think at some point they found the answer to everything, as to what happened next, was more surprising. Perhaps Golden Rose Ice Chic nail lacquer to fix Dawn syndrome? Or red laundry detergent? Something like Perlux red?
