please elaborate. what is a neurodivergen. is it a plane , a bird a planet. i am only knowledgeable about the term ADHD (abnormaly diverse hetrosexual dog). XXX
My brother with down syndrome, who we adopted as a baby, is an adult who cannot read, cannot write (except his name, but even then with difficulty), cannot make proper sentences, would not necessarily do great at keeping personal hygiene, and will never live by himself, have a "proper" job, or exercise his citizenship independently (which is why he lives with other adults with special needs in a specialized home and will probably have to stay for the rest of his life). He went to kindergarten with me, went to great specialized private schools, he sees a speech therapist and that makes little difference. The home he lives in allow him to cook in supervised groups, go on great holidays and do activities or "jobs" together. He is happy there. Of course he has feelings, and thoughts, and he has hobbies and passions. Of course he went through puberty and teenage rebellion and now enjoys not living at home anymore. He is a human being and deserves love, care and respect. My point is, there are different degrees of DS. The lovely, successful, independent individuals in this video are lucky. While a positive and most importantly RESPECTFUL light should be shone on people with DS, it is important to understand that life is not as (seemingly, anyway) uncomplicated for all of them.
FreakyBo0o yes, thank you for pointing this out. It is a disservice to portray people with high functioning DS as the representation for all people with DS. There are just as many people with DS whom these stereotypes are true. Although everyone deserves love and respect, this small sample of what some people experience is not the true representation.
my sister is the same. she's 16 but has what seems the mentality of a 6 year old. the only thing that she is surprisingly good at is video games and we're trying to use that to help her learn but when it becomes educational her attention span plummets. i just hope one day, maybe by the time she's in her 30's she is able to live somewhat independantly.
What did you think about the question about DS being a disease? To me, it should even be a question, it is a disease that can badly affect the person to various degrees. It simply seems like they're ignoring the fact that it is to make it "look normal", instead of embracing it and really making it normal (=more accepted by society)
My brother has downsydrome but his is much different than these people. He can’t speak yet but we’re still trying to help him speak. He’s 15 right now. I love this video and I totally think people need to educate themselves more on downsydrome.
This opened my eyes. I've never seen people with DS like this. Usually the physical symptoms and verbal symptoms in my experience are severe. The Northern woman mentioning the head tilt really shocked me. So, what a video, brilliant for sharing and my eyes are opened.
This is probably the only time I've seen down syndrome represented by the people with down syndrome. I often have the same problem with seeing autism (my disability) where people often focus on the very "low functioning" side of the spectrum. I've seen ASD representation getting better slowly but not DS. Does anyone know where to find better representation? Please tell me.
SAAAAAAMME. I have mosiac( high functioning ) Down syndrome and high functioning autism. When people hear that I have both they assume I can’t even talk, then they meet me and are very supposed because I don’t have any speech impediment or any other visable thing ( other than leg braces)

I feel like people need to realize there's different variations of Down's. some high functioning and some low functioning. the reason these situations happen is because the general public is more familiar with the low functioning.
@@savannapierceshimomura You don't know what you are talking about. Down syndrome is on a spectrum. I am a support worker for adults with learning disabilities and have been for over 11 years. Some of the people that I support who have down syndrome barely need any support. Literally just popping into their home once a day to check on them. Maybe if they have a bill to pay we go to the bank or if they need a letter explained to them I will help them with that. Other people who I support who have down syndrome can't wash without support and need 24 hour care. I work in a small community where everyone knows everyone else. All the people I support grew up together, went to the same school & having the same services supporting them. So no, it's not about people having different opportunities. I support two siblings who both have DS and one is *a lot* more independent than the other.
Alaurah Willow sorry I could be wrong Im glade i could learn from this but I was at the national Down syndrome convention and they had some classes and that’s where I got this information and i do understand there are different levels I’ve seen many different levels of capabilities but what I was told is that they aren’t born with different functions just it depends on the amount of learning resources.
Savanna Pierce yes I have ADHD, autism, and mosiac Down syndrome. Even with all of my disabilities I still managed to get into an honors class in my high school (I’m rly proud of myself)
In my early 20's I worked as a bartender and my boss at the time had some kind of agreement with a city to host a local group of people with Down's Sydrome on a biweekly basis. Altho my boss was a piece of shit that loved exploiting people- and probably had that agreement to his benefit in 1st place, I always thought that was cool of him. But that's not the point... the point is that I've never encountered a group of 30ish people who were so positive and happy. Now a decade later I really miss the laughs we had.
I love what that mom of the baby says," yeah she'll get there we are just taking the scenic route." that's going to be a comeback for when people ask about my son who has chiari and autism.
These videos that are being made possible by the BBC are fantastic. I just wish they reached a wider audience as these are the types of videos that could passively educate those who are uninformed of the British public.
+ajnode And I suppose you have done your own research on this, then? Or have professional experience adequate enough to make such a claim? Or are you, as I personally suspect, just talking out of your ass about a subject you don't really know anything about and which you have been horrendously misinformed about?
Yes... I have years of professional experience with this. I work with people that have a multitude of disorders, syndromes/diseases every day of my life. I don't understand what your problem is with my comment? This is a clickbait video made by a corporation that misleads the audience and gives a limited and single-viewed perspective on the issue.

Ignoant? Huh? My mum has worked with down syndrome children and adults as her profession for 30 years. I'm definitely not ignorant. I was merely pointing out that he and Rupert are alike. Not just because they are both British, but the way they speak, their mannerisms. I swear if I close my eyes it sounds exactly like Rupert. This wasn't meant to offend anyone.
I just found out that my baby could be born with Down syndrome and I was really upset but after seeing this I’m so relieved and happy. I’m so glad that I can see people living happy full lives and now I feel so much better thank you so much.

Shes also had open heart surgery. and i LOVE her to bits. If you have down syndrome, i think that you are so amazing and always happy about everything. i literally think people with down syndrome have the most amazing personalities.
Melissa Well when someone takes a scenic route, they usually take a long while to complete it as they are looking at the beautiful scene, therefore they walk on the route slowly. She is saying that her daughter will learn how to do things slowly. 🏞🌄
This kid at my summer camp, has Down syndrome, it's so bad he can't talk like these people. But also kind of worried abt his healt. He look like he hasn't been cleaned in a month, his teeth are a mess, and that's not part of the Down syndrome. I think his parents aren't treating him the same as his brothers and sister who are really clean and have perfect teeth and nice clothes, and the guy has to ware like 1 pair of clothes everyday
I had a friend who worked at a group home as a live-in carer. One of the residents was in a lot of emotional distress because his girlfriend had been moved to another home because, apparently, it wasn't appropriate for people with Down Syndrome to have relationships. Witnessing people being treated like this made me so angry. What gives them the right to deny others happiness?
I have seen this happen with Autism resident "communties" as well. Most in patient facilities are full of human rights violations, from not allowing patients to date, to inflicting intentional physical harm to residents
Indeed. A lot of abuse goes on and in the "community" where my friend worked, the staff felt trapped by the way the system worked: "free accommodation" and "pocket money" in return for working there. So near impossible to leave unless they had savings stashed away. If you look up L'Arche Community scandals, quite a few horrors pop up... horrible.
As someone who volunteers for a group that centers around adults with developmental disabilities, this video is extremely misleading. These people in this video are extremely high functioning. There are definitely varying degrees with which people's disability affect them and this video only focused on the highest functioning group. People who make the assumptions that this video are complaining about are not malicious and they're genuine questions. There are people with Downs who can't read, have to live in group homes as adults, need constant supervision for their own safety and need assistance doing basic things that you and I take for granted every day. It's better that people are sensitive to people with down syndrome's limitations, rather than impose impossible standards that all but the highest of functioning people with down syndrome could never achieve. I'm afraid that people will be upset or disappointed if the person they know with down syndrome isn't as high functioning as these people after watching this video.
Rachel Stephens Yea, but I didn't realise there were high functioning people with Down's Syndrome until I saw this video. And just out of curiosity is whether or not the person is high-functioning decided by their genetics or something or is it down to the treatment they receive as a child?
Rachel Stephens In a sense it might be misleading. The thing is that for most cases, if all the people with down's syndrome were stimulated and helped since they were born, they would be high functioning. If they had the proper help, most people with condition would be able to read, write.... Not everyone is born to caring parents or even parents with time to take care of them. My sister has down's syndrome, and her and I reckon around 70% of the people at her "special school" are high functioning. You can tell wich people come from a caring background. So I don't think this vídeo is so misleading. In Many cases depends on what their society can do for them and the special help they recieve.
Cool Guy It can definitely be a combination of things, as many people will have a combination of ailments. Some can work, drive and live alone, and on the opposite spectrum, some will never speak, will be in diapers and need a full time care nurse. To say low functioning people are just products of neglect is incorrect, just as assuming all high functioning people come from fabulous homes is incorrect. My biggest fear is that people will assume everyone should be on the same level and won't understand that some people won't have the same capabilities, so they'll need extra care and understanding. Edited for spelling.
It's down to the help they get when little. My mum taught me to read at 2 1/2. I have DS. The stupid American girl is talking rubbish saying we can't read, write and we are in nappies!
The woman at 2:10 who read "People with down syndrome can't live alone," and responded by hugging the baby and saying "I hope not," Basically just melted my heart. That was just such a great and genuine response.
@Geometry Dash I think what Taxi girl is trying to say is that they are "more high functioning [than] the majority [of people who have down syndrome]". Not "they are functioning better than the base population". She could have worded her comment better.
I agree, but then again they're younger and have benefited from for advanced forms of therapy. I think the cure for Down's isn't to eliminate it from the prenatal population, but to get better and better as a society to integrating people from a young age. That is a proof of our technological and scientific advancement. This video wasn't supposed to be informative but to open our eyes to a new perspective in life: that of a dignified person with trisomy 21

My friend is in this! She is the lady next to the woman with the baby. She actually has mosaic down syndrome. It's basically the same thing but we are not affected as much then with people who have full on down syndrome. I say we because I have it too.
girlygrace 6575 you're so pretty
oh wow cause i was saying she seems really high functioning. Never seen someone like that very interesting she is beautiful
girlygrace 6575 she seems perfectly fine tbh 😊😊
I didn't even know that existed, thank you for educating me :)
I was thinking she seemed as though it was more mild.

*"People with Down Syndrome can't learn."*
*"Yeah."*
**casually throws paper**
*"Alright then."*
Most never learn to read or write.
Um wrong. My daughter has Down syndrome. She's non verbal but can read. The problem is that they have hypotonia and many have apraxia as well which makes motor planning difficult. That's why programs like S2C and the like help them output because it takes fine motor out of the way and grooves in the pattern to select letters to spell

CC well what kinda of scientist, it’s kind of a broad subject, there’s 3 in the space field and another 2 in the medical field, plus I think there’s 2 in the psychological field but I’m not 100% sure, you might wanna do some research before you post a comment bud :)
@@TheAtlasJoker >1/1,000,000 people with Down Syndrone are scientists, I bet you feel so silly right now
CC 1 in 1000 chance of baby born with Down syndrome out of about 360,000 births world wide to give an average that around 360 people with Down syndrome born a day, I’ll say it’s 0.5 since you said less then one so I’ll multiply buy two and divide 2,000,000 by 360 which gives me about 5556 and divide that by 365 for days in a year which come out to roughly 15 years and given the average life span is roughly 80 years, divide 80/15 and you come out with about 5, there are at the very least currently 5 scientist with Down syndrome statistics wise, I bet you feel so silly right now
CC I did state that I knew of 5 for sure and two more that I wasn’t 100% sure of sooo...thanks for helping me prove my point :)
I have autism but it wasnt discovered until i was 14. My parents are super supportive and always find ways which help me to take in information easier!
I'm autistic and I have ADHD, and it's so nice to hear other neurodivergent people.
You say some very relatable things. :)
please elaborate. what is a neurodivergen. is it a plane , a bird a planet. i am only knowledgeable about the term ADHD (abnormaly diverse hetrosexual dog). XXX
@@JosieHandleyso honestly, I can’t tell if you’re trying to be insulting, and you spelled heterosexual wrong btw.
They scare me
my sister is the same. she's 16 but has what seems the mentality of a 6 year old. the only thing that she is surprisingly good at is video games and we're trying to use that to help her learn but when it becomes educational her attention span plummets. i just hope one day, maybe by the time she's in her 30's she is able to live somewhat independantly.
FreakyBo0o you
What did you think about the question about DS being a disease? To me, it should even be a question, it is a disease that can badly affect the person to various degrees. It simply seems like they're ignoring the fact that it is to make it "look normal", instead of embracing it and really making it normal (=more accepted by society)
I couldn't even tell that the woman that was with the mum and baby has d.s
amy g, me either!
amy g same here
has DS, not is DS, but that aside, there is a form of DS called mosaic DS that is much less apparent. She could have that.
Taylor Mix The baby has DS, but so does the woman with glasses. We know this because the mum asks her questions about people talk to her.
Shie H. you're right, HAS sounds much better. Shame on me. :(

Silly Goose is this an ironic comment?
@Silly Goose Is autism funnier than down syndrome?

Alaurah Willow and of course some come with different things like ADHD or celiac disease.
Savanna Pierce People with DS are more likely to have autism and they are a lot more likely to get dementia by the age of 35 😕

His parents are horrible.
Thats horrible
this made me cry 💔 why are people so cruel..
Sadly disability often is frowned upon so lots of people don't care for their child properly
Parker Vlogs that's horrible I feel so bad for him
I had a friend who worked at a group home as a live-in carer.
Charlie Fien, She literally said "There are people with Downs that can't read" not "Nobody with Downs can read".
The woman at 2:10 who read "People with down syndrome can't live alone," and responded by hugging the baby and saying "I hope not," Basically just melted my heart. That was just such a great and genuine response.
The people featured in this video are EXTREMELY high functioning
Taxi Confessions lol sure.
Geometry Dash leoel do you even know anyone with down syndrome? These people are much more high functioning then the majority
Geometry Dash leoel than*
@Geometry Dash I think what Taxi girl is trying to say is that they are "more high functioning [than] the majority [of people who have down syndrome]".
