When you wanna cry but you can't, you play this song😏
I feel this song so deeply. I suffered HUGE losses before finally leaving Baltimore. I picked up, packed up and moved to Cali. But I learned that you cant run from your pain. It only shows up differently. Im working on being a different person from within first.
baltimore girl here too, who did the same thing a few years ago
Through the pain of adversity we find empathy to continue to grow!
*(Life Journey Is Unpredictable)*
Yo Ma, your testimony is beautiful! I dont know if you meditate however going within is the only way. One love
Exactly i reside in baltimore and this has been kinda my theme song to leave my hometown once again i'm tired need NEW NEW my day finally came met my FRIEND and we packing up to move to New Zealand next year i'm excited for the change ☺

Quincy Jones - Ai No Corrida
Actually, Robert Glasper has won numerous Grammy's for his songs and songwriting. Believe me, he's not underrated!
This song hits so different. Never gets old. Love it so much.
I hear it, but mostly feel it.

dana ford word
This is dead ass soul food...deserves way more exposure!
Bought this album. I've listened to this track on repeat all day long for several days literally. She said "got a new church new preacher, every Sunday I pray for amnesia."
right . straight from Her soul
I heard this song once on the radio and couldn’t figure out who it was. Accidentally stumbled upon it a few days ago listening to a mix on here and looked at the info and then listen to the song again with the lyrics and can’t not stop I’m fixated on trying to unravel the overwhelming connection of the lyrics. Like whoa
Because then she is accountable for her actions. The pastor taught her the word, she needs to put it in action for herself. So amnesia would take it form her memory. Removing the accountability.
I church hop lol I'm a mess.
Bars...
Makes wanna cry everytime....
I've had some rough times in my life and this song hits so deep. It gets better eventually ❤
Song is 🔥 , wish it was longer! Only 3 minutes damn😥
That opening chord progression is fire!🔥🎹🎶
This is that "clean your house on a Saturday morning with a n'scent burning" music.
and that's how I heard it lol
Truth lol
Yeah!
Me burston hey
This is infinitely more than what you've described.
The thing I find amazing about this song is the application of rational thought during intense emotions. The way she's singing it it's like she looked for a way to escape her life and is sure that she found it. She keeps repeating the same thing, "If i'm somebody else, it never happened to me." Not as if she's trying to convince others but that she is trying to convince herself. And she's taking so much action to insure that she escapes the life she once lived. But the logic is so backwards and flawed yet that doesn't matter because it's subjective logic. It was spoken into existence. That's logic that's only capable by the human mind. I love it.
yes . exactly..
+Donte Vinson yessss you got it right on I felt this same way. great answer.
I love your comment it spoke what I felt when I heard this 💯
Very nice comment.
Exactly my life in a few words. Beautiful and simple interpretation.
Lord , heal the heart ... that I , myself broke .. with sin .
Who's still bumping this album in 2019?
Just came across this in 2021,straight 🔥
Sept 2021
I keep this song on rotation. The lyrics and production are heartfelt and put me in a mood. You feel the pain, but the promise of something new also.
The lyrics to this song is so deep, on so many levels.
I've got a new church, new preacher
Every Sunday, I pray for amnesia
Smoke different cigarettes
I got a new address
I'm waiting on a big procedure
I need a new heart too doctor
Don't care how much it costs
You just gotta help me stop the hurtin
Help me be a different person
[Hook]x4
If I'm somebody else
It never happened to me
[Verse 2] :
I'm moving to a brand new country
Say goodbye to everyone that loved me
I'll lie about my age
I'll lie about my name
I'm making up a brand new story
Oh, I'm feeling like a big bad liar
But i gotta throw the pain to the fire
Every day I'm busy working on how to be a different person
Emili Sande's writing skills are on a different level, this song is the perfect example.
And that instrumentation on top is the icing.
He already won a Grammy for the last album. Hopefully His music gets recognize for the second time.
This is my life. I have served in the military. It has been rough adjusting to being around people at times. So I bond with this song........
I can relate though I've always been misunderstood..being in the military for ten years with 4 deployments makes me a comfortable loner.
I can also relate
I left the Army in 98 and I'm jus now feeling a little normal
Hang in there guys❤️❤️❤️Thank you for putting your life on the line💐💐💐
I love this...I was in a relationship that I knew was unhealthy and daydreamed about letting go....Wanted companionship and didnt want to be alone... Sad but I didnt know who I was nor did I know my worth. I was lost and alone.
I love this song 🎵 on so many personal levels....when I 1st heard it I KNEW I was gonna love it but when I deciphered the powerful lyrics by Emeli Sande I was touched in my spirit that moved me to tears 😢. I lost my 22 yr old son 2yrs ago 💔 and when she said "IF I'M SOMEBODY ELSE, IT NEVER HAPPEN TO ME" over and over as the vamp I couldn't hold back my emotions as I was driving down the road. I cried and cried and even though I'll NEVER know the love of a Mother for her child I can only express my feelings as a Father and it hurts so bad. So, reading other people's comments has been very therapeutic for me and I'm so thankful for the people who felt transparent enough to share their very intimate experiences and feelings. This is when the internet and social platforms are at its best. I appreciate everyone who left a comment cause I read them all through my pain and tears. Thank you fam.
Peace ✌🏾
This is how I feel about my life right now.
Ginger Lay same 💯

This song hits home for me. Being somebody else has to be better than who I am now. Amazingly beautiful song for a not so beautiful feelings that I'm feeling.
This song hit waaaaay too deep. Damn… lyrics are small but the message is powerful.
This song says exactly what you can't say when going through heartbreak.
"If I am somebody else it never happened to me"
If you could be some one else at that moment it wouldn't hurt so bad. Love the hook
Doesnt get much better than this.
mad smoove...

Real R&B right here.
Emeli wrote and sang this one!!
This song touches my soul. People really don't understand me, working on myself
I swear it took my like 6 months to find this song! The New York radio station played it so much but I never caught the name. My google search was crazy but I'm glad I finally found it .. Great vibe music
Just getting into Robert Glasper. One of my fav artists already
Jay-Mo Productions aye same. 's too good
+Jay-Mo Productions Me 2. what you said...
+Jay-Mo Productions You might like Rafi Ki mixtapes, I recognize a lot of Glasper's phrases in his mixes, like the beginning of this song.
you weren't lying he has some good music from what I heard so far...What song did he mix this one with?
ok, at about 16:04. There are some other parts that I found myself thinking, "where have i heard that before". Really thoughtful stuff.
This is a beautiful song from the soul....I miss that.
+Nicole S. I agree, I love this song.
This is exactly how I feel, and I'm getting rid of all the disappointments in my life, and all the hurt I've been through, no matter what it is.
Beautiful track! Most of the time I enjoy this song and sometimes it cuts thru me like a knife in a deep & painful way. Either way I can't stop listening to it. Truly the epitome of what soul music is about!
DEEP, AND BEAUTIFUL! I CAN FEEL THIS SONG COURSING THROUGH MY ENTIRE BODY!
When I hear this song, Emeli Sande' vocally reminds me of Vivien Green! Beautiful!!!
i cant stop listening to this joint! Soul music is back!!!!
u say that again feelin' the love of Soul R&B
I know this is my song!! I'm so glad people are starting to make real R&B again...or is this neo-soul? Well whatever, all I know is I like it. Thank you Robert. Keep them coming
Santa Badd
i hear u
Me too! I keep it on repeat.
Yes I agree it's beautiful
Love this song. I thought like this too. If I could change people, places, and things that those things didn't happen to me either if I became somebody else. This hits "Deep Inside" but, the truth is that I take me everywhere I go.
is a song about mental health and personality disorder. that quite a sad one, but a beautiful one
Yo, i probably listen to this song every other month. Oftentimes you just want to escape the situation(s) you are experiencing and be a totally different person. Just be free.
This song speaks to my soul
Man, I completely forgot all about this song, after dealing with disappointment and heart break of course I would love to be somebody else. Then I snap out of it, and realize wanting to be someone else is a waste of myself.
Song so underrated!! This is heat!!
Bringing that real soul music back! We need more of this!
Man. Radio stations mainstream media wake up and grace the world with the beautiful music like this that we need.
Being a blessing unto others that are in need of seeing all the hurt that lives within! If you don't forgive yourself and others, You can never never understand the sacrifice that our creator has done for us. Peace!!!
he needs a song with syd it would be bomb
Elle_Oh_Ve_Ee I agree!
Elle_Oh_Ve_Ee most definitely
Hell yes
Emel'i Sandi's voice subliminally saying repeat this song! So cleverly put together. Best wishes future artist with a hopeful promising career. Thanks
I am mesmerized by this song...
this gave me chills in the very beginning before she even started singing , i love tunes like that!
This joint bumps on the highway. The prduction is is crazy. Robert Glasper is so underated.
Quincy Jones - Ai No Corrida
Her voice has a slight resemblance to Amel Larrieux from Groove Theory. I was trying to figure for the longest time who she reminds me of.
In this song she does--I love Amel as well..she has a voice like a beautiful, jazzy bird =). As does Esperanza Spalding. My all time favorites.
Yes! I love all 3 of them.
I agree. She also sounds like Brandy on this song.
I was thinking the EXACT SAME THING!
She also sounds like Vivian Green!
I love Emeli. Her voice is so pure. He's right here with me
Can we get Back to this type of music collectively? PLEASE!!!
this has got to be one of the smoothest sounds in the sounds of music...I love this all day
The Lyrics are so real it brings out a certain overtone that makes it a beautiful song

This song is the truth!
One of *The Coldest Tracks* this Brother has ever made....
Smooth as Silk🎤🎧✔💯🔵
Quincy Jones - Ai No Corrida
Under rated music like this needs to be over rated
completely forgot about this song
Great song for the soul, relaxation😃💯
Dope. Conya Doss next? Make it happen, brother...
yes!!!!
Yes.
When I discovered Conya on Tidal I even sent her a message on insta saying why was she not on the spotlight all along?
This is a great song that represents how we all want to be somebody else & don't realize when we are. Just a true reflection of life , true lyrics and story they expressed
The "Perfect Escape" Song for anyone who is dealing with, the harsh realities of life!
I’m lost in these lyrics; it’s speaking loudly to my soul
this song literally came right on time in my life..everyday im working on how to be a different person.love it!
This brother is a genius and so musically talented
Quincy Jones - Ai No Corrida
I freaking love this song!!!
Love this song! Another underrated artist.
Tiffany Gillespie are you referring to Robert Glasper or Emeli Sande?! 😂
This, Let It Ride, and Trust were the best ones on Black Radio 2
I put this on repeat and just vibe...............
Certain songs just capture you emotionally, you feel like your body left the earth, and it’s just your Ka listening. This and a song by Yebba called - Distance, give me that feeling.
Another awesome colabo, we need good music like this on radio!
This song was my favourite off of RG's Black Radio 2. Lyrics stellar, beats inspirational. Makes me reminisce of uncomfortable times, but also a cool song to listen to on a chilled day...
It was somebody else...never happened to me...2018..still vibing on this!!
I do not understand why this joint is being slept on. You would think that every Emo chick who claims to be deep and misunderstood had gravitated towards it by now. You would think that all of the neo soul heads had jumped on this by now. But I guess not. Huge mystery.
That's why I love radios like pandora. That's how I found out about this gem!
Me too girl! Pandora!
Emo chicks only listen to rock, hence the emo tag.
Emil Sande! What a great story teller and song writer! This song is so haunting that your imagination goes wild. They are so many mystery and crime stories go through my head right now.
Thank god for the real artist left out here! The whole album is awesome!
How I used to love this song, I'm so grateful I discovered it again
This is serious music right here...
Yessss this is real music. This is the kind of music you meditate to.
Bought the album off iTunes two weeks ago and still keeping it in heavy rotation. Want real talent and genius ruling the airwaves? Put your money where your mouth is and support these extraordinary artists. That's the only way we can compete with the trash being funded by the trillions.
Fully agree, support the real talented artists. Big up the Robert Glasper Experiment. Much respect goes out from London.
This song is sad. I like music that makes you think, music that touches you in a certain way. I heard this on the radio one time about nine months ago. I finally found it today. When she repeats those lines like that at the end it really hammers in the message of this song. As if the girl is trying to convince her self that the statement is true. Black women are on the lowest rung on the ladder in hip hop culture. Its really sad, which osv why i pretty much stopped listening to hip hop altogether. This is the only real song I've heard in awhile on the radio. I feel sorry for all the girls that have gone through damaging experiences, like the character in this song.
Right, i love listening to it over and over... because it makes me think..
the chorus " If Im somebody else it never happened to me"
makes me think of how it applies to me, and maybe others... Like I try hard to change myself, run from who I am... yet it seems futile..b/c im still the same person... despite my many attempts... making it seem like .. "it (could) never happen to me.... and if do appear different to others (like) somebody else... in my mind I still feel the same/see the same person.
I love such thought provoking songs ^^ , tie in beautiful melodies/tones and you have a hit. :)
I don't think this song has anything to do about black women being, as you say, 'lowest rung on the ladder.' ***huh?*** Anyway, the concept is universal and everyone has an experience where at one point wished 'they were somebody else' just so they wouldn't deal with their temporary hurts.
***** I agree. The women in hip hop thing is another topic. This song is just about going through heartbreak that myself and others have been in. You just want the pain to stop so you move, start over, work on yourself etc., and want the EXPERIENCE to go away as if it never happened, hence the chorus "If I'm somebody else, it never happened to me".
Right I agree! This song can relate to anyone. It explains why I listen to it everyday lol :)
Shamya michelle Hawkins You've got great taste in music....
:
I've got a new church, new preacher
Every Sunday, I pray for amnesia
Smoke different cigarettes
I got a new address
I'm waiting on a big procedure
I need a new heart too doctor
Don't care how much it costs
You just gotta help me stop the hurtin
Help me be a different person
x4
If I'm somebody else
It never happened to me
:
I'm moving to a brand new country
Say goodbye to everyone that loved me
I'll lie about my age
I'll lie about my name
I'm making up a brand new story
Oh, I'm feeling like a big bad liar
But i gotta throw the pain to the fire
Every day I'm busy working on how to be a different person
This song to me screams a theme that celebrities follow. Trying to escape the pain of the past by turning into someone else. To heal one must face their pain, not run away literally or figuratively for that matter. Pain is a teacher.
Why does this song make me feel like my soul is sobbing ?
Robert Glasper is pure brilliance! Yaw don't hear me though!
It never happened too me!.. classic. .
just realized this song is about heart break...deep
I have always craved more in my music, something that speaks to my soul. Robert Glasper, The Foreign Exchange, Zo! and a few others actually tap into that for me.
This song helps me out alot!
