Penn 525 mag. The Fathom was rubbish until it was magged. Saw the plastic brake blocks melt and fall apart. The 525 from design was and is a true mag reel (I still own three) without a mag conversion the fathom is useless.
Andy morning. I've noticed the penn 525 original USA made are far better than the new stuff seams not to have the build Quality. Seams to be cheaper in construction. Seams that the aluminium don't have the quality it seems to salt up more. The paint finish don't seam that hard wearing. The diawa construction was not all that in its build quality on the original slosh 20 . The newer one's are my go to . Floating spool excetra is great. But as like rods it's what suits you best because we all like different things. There is no better or best it's what the individual likes.
As mentioned can’t really compare as Fathom is non standard with mag conversion. Should really be comparing 525 with some thing like Akios Nitron F15….
Chinese....the centre pinion is mostly unsupported and the spools rub..only good on earlier American made ones as the pinion fits in the hole properly.. Chinese tolerances are way out
For out and out distance the Penn 525 tournamag will beat the fathom. Only downside on that version of the 525 is no ratchet. Was never a big fan of the extra or slidy. If you get a chance cast the tornamag version you will be shocked. I would say it keeps up with a 7 ht on the beach. I use mine on chesil when I don’t need a ratchet. And my fathoms on other venues
Various factors to consider... 525 is just a great reel! Bomb proof... But good condition parts are hard to get hold off.. Especially pinion gears... Fathoms good reels but they flake like shit! Parts are easy to get hold of.. Only think I don't like about fathoms is the very early fathoms had powder coated yokes and once it peels it makes a absolute mess inside... Both are good reels
Unfair contest straight off the mark..525 wins...patham been modified

Fathom 💯525 kids toys😂
Penn 525 mk 1 any time of the day
They were great before China started building them! It's the same with most reels these days.

Hmm my mag xtra is 20 years old... I will check back in 18 years and tell you how my fathom gets on after the same time...
Why not just compare the 525 to the casting special?
@@dr4gon166 casting special does not deserve to be in the ring lol . Biggest let down Penn has come up with mate
Is that a pmr conversion?

Does no one rate abu anymore?
Phathom 15 all day long
Why not a 525 mag 4, much better casting reel than the fathom. Just bought 2 of them, best I've had
Mag2 3s and 4s are made of chocolate! I've never known reels to go through as many bearings as they do! The build qauilty is crap
@@-s-t-i-g-5047 if that was a worry I'd still be using my 40 year old squidder
