Ah, it's been far too long for this day to arrive. For years, I had only witnessed railroading from the modern era: diesels, GE & EMD, etc. For long, the life of steam was merely a vision of the past, something from a time far away that I would never get to see in-person. But finally, on a cool October weekend in fall of 2023, the glory of a living, breathing, chugging steam locomotive was before me. Let's go see where the High Iron takes us today on this vintage voyage to a time long gone.
@ThatModelGuyGA and @Transit_TruckinOfGA, it was a pleasure seeing you both on this fun trip. I hope for more journeys in the future. :)

In all seriousness though, the 4501 was also my first steam engine. It really is quite the experience, and I'm hoping to see more steam next year. Also, if you ever are able to come again next year, hopefully, I'll be there too :)

You think 4501 is loud, you should see a 300 psi 4-8-8-4 monster with an even throatier whistle than most. It’s enough to make a grown man cry, and probably go deaf.
The sound of a Big Boy I’m sure would get the dead’s attention.

As to your question on running water out of tender from time to time steam engine crews will over-fill a tender to flush out any impurities or foreign objects that have collected in the water in the cistern so they won't impede the water flow to engine or to reduce any contaminates finding their way into the boiler.

I see my photo at 1:47 has made its rounds lol. As someone who chased the doubleheader I can confirm it was complete mayhem that day. Also quick correction, the Summerville trains actually weren’t suspended because of Covid, they were suspended because of a bridge in Chattanooga that was deemed not safe for passenger trains.

Nathan let’s say that you are at the railway museum at Duluth ga and a train stops and it’s freight is stretching past the crossing and that train stops for a while is there another way out or what happens in that case to the people in the museum side of the crossing?
There is technically another way out, but it’s very rough and really only people who work there know how to manage it. If you’re a casual visitor, you’re literally trapped.

So what happened to 4501's normal whistle?
Pretty sure a family asked the TVRM to put a 5 chime whistle on the 4501 and it would replace its 3 chime. Not sure if it's a permanent or temporary switch
@@nstrainfanytA family brought a “long bell” 3 chime whistle from a Ps4. This has the same number of chimes as its normal whistle, just a much larger bell, for a deeper sound. The night time ridge runners worked better with a deep whistle as well.
