I had a Saarloos Wolf Dog (he had a small amount of Malamute in him) who sadly passed away from cancer earlier this year at age 11. Have to say I absolutely adored him and miss him terribly. I have no regrets at all though when it comes to sharing that time of my life with Logan, I only wish I could have had even more time with him, it wasn't enough and probably never would be. That said...
I would not recommend such a dog to someone who is not used to owning big, strong willed breeds as they can be a handful at times. Logan grew up to weigh just over 9 stone (59 KG) and could easily stand on his hind legs, put his paws on my shoulders and lick my face no trouble and I'm 6ft1, so you need a bit of physicality to properly look after such a dog. Logan would never start trouble with another dog but he would quite happily give as good as he got if one decided they didn't like him. You need to be strong enough to hold them in case there are ever any issues and my Girlfriend could not hold him on her own which caused an issue once or twice. I grew up with several different breeds of dog one being a German Shepard cross which stood me in pretty good stead for when I got Logan as a pup. While owning such a dog can be so rewarding and was for me such dogs are definitely not a good choice for everyone. I spent about six months thinking about whether I should get such a dog (it really is a big decision) and I made multiple visits to the breeder over the period of about three months before finally taking the plunge. I walked some of the dogs they had and got to know them and the breed a little. Most importantly I got to know the parents of the puppy I eventually ended up taking home as I have found this gives the only real indication as to what temperament your puppy will most likely end up having and even then there's no guarantees. I also went to visit the litter 3-4 times a week before I took him home for good which I hope made the transition a bit easier for him.
If you have young children another breed might be a better fit for you. Once your kids have grown a bit and developed a bit of common sense and aren't likely to poke your wolf dog while he's asleep, try to ride him like a pony or leap off the sofa on to them (all things my kids have done) you'll probably be fine and you could never wish for a more intimidating and loyal guard dog (Logan was anyway). I never once worried about my girlfriend out alone walking Logan or at home, I don't think I locked my front door for about 9 years when he was in. It will of course depend on your dog, even within breeds they are all different.
Logan was fine with all the kids in our family because he grew up with them and they with him but a couple of times he did snap at kids he didn't know who tried to pet him in public to warn them away (please teach your kids to always ask before approaching any dog they are not familiar with) and because of their size and looks this can happen often, they are very striking dogs. Luckily I was always very careful with him when kids were around and the handful of times this happened he never actually made contact with one. It's not so much that I didn't trust Logan, he was pretty predicable and quite lazy to be honest but kids can be unpredictable, get excited, run around, jump about and make a lot of unexpected noise, all stuff that can confuse a dog whose not used to that. He'd probably have been fine 99% of the time but that 1% is all you need for something really awful to happen.
He was fairly trainable as well (nothing compared to my Husky x Collie mind you, she's a god dam genius, if I didn't know better sometimes I'd swear she understood straight up spoken English and just looks at me like I'm the idiot. I have more faith in that dogs intelligence then I do my children). Logan would sit, lay down, give his paw, stay and return when you called him after a fair amount of work with him but it was certainly never 100% especially in his earlier years. He would quite often just ignore you, especially in the first two to three years when he was still very much an adolescent. If there was something more interesting closer to him then you were then it was 50/50 or worse. I lost count of the number of times another dog would appear and I'd call Logan to come back and he would look over his shoulder at me to gauge whether he thought he could get away with running over to it without me being able to do much about it. I laugh now but that used to push my buttons a little as you could see the cogs turning in his brain. He knew exactly what you wanted him to do but simply choose to ignore you which made it that much worse for some reason. I remember spending a good hour on the beach once trying to put him on a lead because he didn't want to go home and every time I tired to leash him he would run in the sea or down the beach 20 meters, he enjoyed that thoroughly. Thankfully he grew out of that behavior pretty quickly. He definitely got more obedient as he got older but this was probably just because of reinforcement, persistence and likely most of all because there were less new things for him to get interested in that he hadn't seen before. He was certainly his own dog and he definitely had days where he was more 'grumpy' then others.
I also cannot echo enough one of the things about these dogs that Anneka highlighted which is that they bond and they bond hard. Pack is of massive importance to them even more so then other dogs. To illustrate, my mum has a very old dear friend named Albert who often spends time with our family. He was about 86 years old at the time. All three of us went to walk our dogs but because the weather turned Albert decided he would wait in the car. Logan would not have this. He absolutely would not leave Albert behind. Even with the other dogs, me and my mum all out of sight of the car calling him he absolutely would not leave him, just sat there by the passenger door. Lovely delicious smells, tree's and grass and he wouldn't budge an inch. This happened more then once and with other people who he viewed as part of his pack. Leaving the House... didn't want to go unless everyone went out the front door first, literally. Sometimes it was easier for me and my partner to both walk out the front door so Logan would follow and then my partner would go back in after he was in the car. If we were going somewhere he absolutely wanted everyone to go or no-one or he'd just lay on the floor until I put a lead on him and he knew he had no choice. Logan was great with all of my family but only because he spent a lot of time with them from 8 weeks onward. He wasn't fond of strangers. He didn't mind people he didn't know in the house but he certainly wasn't one to let complete strangers give him a hug. He was fine staying with my Brother or my Mum but did not cope well if left alone or with people he didn't know well and would suffer pretty bad separation anxiety. I think if something had happened to me and he had to be re-homed it would have been very difficult for him... aww just thinking about it...
Sorry for the long post, got stuck reminiscing a bit I guess but I hope someone might find it useful.
I don't want to put anyone off having a Saarloo's I absolutely loved it, wouldn't have changed one thing about him and miss my true best friend but getting any dog is a massive commitment especially a large dog and even more so for breeds like the Saarloo's who don't re-home well if at all.
TLDR: Wolf Dogs are not for everyone. Do your research into the breed, sleep on it then sleep on it some more and spend a significant amount of time with the breeder or with someone who owns one before making such a commitment because it really is a massive one, this breed in particular does not cope well with being left alone. These dogs a very difficult to re-home once they have found their pack and if you can't cope with such a dog there's a good chance that'll be the end of the line and you'll have to live with that if you can't live with these amazing animals and bit of more then you could handle.

My Southpaw was No wolf dog very much like one of these wolves, she would howl at sirens:)End it sounds so much like the wolf but she was beautiful and without a doubt, the most beautiful loving friend I’ve ever had to this day. Period I literally got sick when she died so I know the laws, and I probably felt at times 100 because I have no family and my home is just me without her. He also passed away from cancer at age 14 and eight months. She was the one and only. I pray for your peace and comfort. God gave us the dogs for a very specific reason.

Just please be highly careful as wolf dogs do require some special handling. It's better to observe their beauty from a distance if you aren't fully sure.
Make sure you can handle difficult dog breeds first. Saarloos are easier then many wolf dogs but still. I'd also say go make some friends with ambassador dogs first.
If you can try and meet a dingo first. They're kinda in-between a wolf and dog. Though have their own unique canid identity.
Also the shy nervous nature is partially wolf DNA but also breeding program. When dealing with breeding programs from my experience the shy more timid nature is better for the companion animals. Trained right they can still be friendly not aggressive but protective to a point and basically make for really service animals.

@@bmxriderforlife1234 i live with saarloos wolfdogs for couple of years, and they are not as difficult or bad as you say, mine are very shy, and rough when playing, and protective over our son towards strangers, amd that is something which i find very normal.
People who wanne have a saarloos must just be wel educated and have lots of patience to live with a saarloos, because they have more time needed to learn all things what dogs have to learn,.
The training exists just off setting your own boundaries and bond with the saarloos, having fun with a saarloos pays off really well, never train hard with them, that will destroy them amd destroys the bond for life

Can't, however, understand people who get such a dog, intigrate it into their lives, and then decide to 'give them up'😕

Amazing to hear how they train them to handle stress at such an early age.
I guess it is only natural. In the wild animals would also experience stress from the moment they were born.
I guess as humans we are pampered too much at a young age and can’t handle stress very well later on.
And unfortunately we pamper the dogs in the same way.

A saarloos is trainable but expect nothing back, he will not pleeze the owner like border collies or gsd does.
You have just find a calm and oeacefull way to live with a saarloos

My family had a gorgeous Saarloos wolfdog when I was young. We were told he was a German Shepherd with no papers and we got him for $20! The parents chose the biggest puppy there and he grew to have the heaviest chest I ever saw on a shepherd type dog. His name was BeeBee and he was the goofiest sweetheart ever! I miss him.

I've seen a few rescued saarloos do okay. Usually because me or the people who had them knew about wolf hybrids and dogs in general. Worked really hard to prevent that damage.
Did the same thing with my last rescue. Portuguese cattle dog that was severely abused by the previous owners. Spent alot of work doing it but got her to a good spot. She also lived much longer then expected cause I took good care of her.
She was 9 to 11 when I got her. I had her for five years. Vet said she may have been a tad older as well. Puppy milled to the point of age she wasn't having normal heats anymore.
She hated that being moved around constantly. But even when I had to have her put down she knew she was safe with me and let the vet take her to the clinic in his vehicle. Before that she'd freak thinking she was always gonna get dropped somewhere new.

These are stunning, I want to get a second dog whenever I can. Right now I can only financially support my one dog and we're moving around quite a bit, thankfully Olof adapts super quickly to new environments. I'd prefer to get a shelter dog, but the Saarloos is definitely one I'm gonna look at.

Early Neurological Stimulation works so well for training a great dog. We did it with the last 2 puppies we have had, a Staffordshire Terrier & a Vizsla. They are both very well socialized, not nervous of noises, etc.

Husband and I had no idea what we were in for, when we got our Saarloos puppy at 7 weeks. She's a year and a half now, and she's thankfully mellowed-out a bit (possibly because of her congenital disease), but I definitely don't recommend the dog for new dog owners. Definitely needs training when young, and lots of socialization. We went through two sessions of training classes with two different approaches. Positive reinforcement had limited effect; it was necessary to assert my spot in our familial hierarchy in order for her training to stick better. I absolutely believe that when you're taking training lessons, in reality the owner is being trained. Sadie is a quick-learner, BUT does tend to pick and choose when she wants to listen. Personality-wise I think they do have some separation anxiety, and they are quite sensitive... This dog does have a high prey drive, and does need to be watched when playing with smaller dogs (although Sadie doesn't like getting barked at loudly and gets scared easily). Definitely very needy in terms of attention, education, and exercise. She is super loyal, to the point where we are comfortable with her off-leash when hiking- she will stay close, and catch up quickly to us. Thankfully she does not like to bark, except only when she wants to tell us something. Sadie is quite the cuddle bug though!
