    I’m so happy that you supplemented their food. I couldn’t ignore the hunger of the poor chicks either.
    Seeing the older owlet attempting to feed the other was so heartwarming!

    It was frustrating watching it in real time. The parents not showing up and gylfie raiding the kids food. But we are rewarded by the lovely personalities that grew up out of this. Fall, in particular, is a treasure.

    I love that when Gylfie came to the nest to scavenge for scraps from the kids pantry the oldest one was like "Mom where's the food? You don't have any?! What are you doing back then! Get out and get your own food!" 😂 And then the threatening clacking of their beak at the end was so cute to tie up the owlets annoyance of there being no food.

      Yes, never seen it before! I wonder why the parents can’t find food so they are starving?
      Might be a couple of different reasons who all come together?

    I'd like to say a thank you to Mrs. REF who also brought the mice and docs. I won't forget the night she came out on a dark night to search for the newly fledged Autumn when we all feared the worst. Her warm smile and waves to the live cam were reassurances that our little owl brood was getting a wonderful helping hand.

    They must be hungry and having trouble finding food. Glad you helped them. You gave us a first hand look at natural cycles. When prey is less, predators do not thrive and therefore become less. Prey thrives more then the predators have a lot of prey. Then many predators compete and the cycle repeats.

    Gylfie seems to be just happy to lay eggs and brood until they can thermoregulate themselves. It's Dryer who's more commendable, constantly bringing food to both the owlets and his mate while feeding himself. Gylfie rarely comes back to the nest and that's just to steal food... The owlets seem to hardly even remember her as their mom and consider her competition instead. XD

      Unfortunately, as I addressed in the film, it would have been too risky to intervene. It would have put the two other, healthy chicks at risk!

  • @jrlagoni
    @jrlagoni 10 годин тому

    Geez, you're nearly as bad as the parents ... when ignoring the youngest chicks plight... but then taking care of older ones! How ironic, and to me disappointing since we amateurs see devastating results on nest cameras for the last born so often.

    • @RobertEFuller
      @RobertEFuller  9 годин тому +1

      It was a tough decision, but as I said in the film, to intervene would have been too risky. It would have put the other two, healthy chicks at risk. Unfortunately this is the nature of the Animal Kingdom. Lots of animals have more young than will survive, just think of the hundreds of sea turtle eggs, for a very small number to survive!
