I raced kyosho mini z for few years. These cars are strong. Never broke any parts. Its expensive but its worth it. Its the same as a 1/5 scale or 1/10 scale touring car but smaller. Fun to race in the winter
I broke differential, chassis on mini z (long time use)
i never by miniz too much expensive, parts to
wl toys is not perfect but its the best deal (battery lithiom, autonomi, power, lot part ...)
I think getting a GL chassis would be a much better solution. Upgrade parts are already there. You would need your upgraded motor and electronics. Much better starting point and really ends up being cheaper vs. buying all those hop- ups.
A couple of minutes in and I started laughing uncontrollably about the usage of the hand on the stick. Love it.
yup, big fan of the hand on a stick
same, first thought: is that freaking mickey mouse or what lol
Haha… lots of comments on it 😅
Looks like Mickey mouse's hand
@@TomleyRC You have to start using it regularly, it's awesome
Love the little hand u are using to show the diffrent parts of the car
Haha, it’s a new feature 😅
I♥️ IT ALSO
A reasonably cheap upgrade to the WLToys may well be swapping out the kit electronics for a HW 1625 esc and your favourite receiver/controller.
GREAT UPGRADE ✌️
Is there enough room? It looks kind of tight in there...
Yeah these things u can upgrade like crazy, bangood has an alliminium set too
@@robbie_b77 check out Beaverhobby he does some neat stuff with Wltoys
i really cant believe an almost $200 rc car uses AAA batteries lol, that is ridiculous. thanks for the review!
They really haven’t changed all that much since they first released lol
Ya bro that is shit
I won’t buy anything I can’t recharge
@@indemwildes9426 rechargeable AAs are a thing
@InDem Wildes which part is shit?
@dub 537h Anything that you have to replace the battery is shit especially at $200
Be interesting to see if you could get hold of an xmod and compare that to them too.
1:34 - I like the cameo from Knuckles the Echidna helping you point out the cars, tho just his hand.
Haha…
I have the WLToys K989 Truck but I'd rather have a Mini Z. Currently my K989 burns up after being ran for just a few minutes and I haven't had the time to take it apart and see what's binding. So it just sits and collects dust. With a Mini Z I know it would work as intended right out of the box.
I’ve not had an issue with any of my WLtoys… but I agree, the Mini-Z is a fine piece of kit
Sounds super circumstantial. I wouldn’t base your opinion off a burnt up esc or motor or whatever. It’s unfortunate but that could easily happen from any rc brand.
The truck proves it. Drifting is a style competition not racing. Sliding around looks cool but is much slower. Probably also why the mini z is slower also. So if sliding is the goal get the mini.
Well put point sir!!
Yes, so much quicker when you have grip… and would have been even quicker if I could hit the Apex’s better 👌
Always a pleasure tuning in & hearing your feedback. Salute 🤚
I love on the wltoys that you can extend the wheelbase. There is an extra gear that’s a little longer and you basically push the axle assembly to the next holes back. You can’t mount the stock body but you can mount some air fix body’s. I have an Nissan Silvia s15 body that fits perfectly.
Also that's the HKS oil slick R32 ❤ amazing car irl ❤ same for the calsonic
Great comparison. I enjoy the humor too.
I just ordered a 969. I had extra money, and really wanted to be able to justify buying a mini z...but:
1) this is my first drift rc. maybe i suck, or i hate it
2) the mini z had no (out of the box) gyroscope
3) the mini z ran on AAA batteries.
That's pretty naff for a $200 car.
So i'll recieve my 969 on tuesday, and if i like it, i'll upgrade to brushless, add an ESC, etc...
I really like the mini z looks and the quality of the build, but for the compromises AND the higher price, I decided to go with the 969.
The gloved hand pointer is awesome! The fickle finger of fate pointer NEEDS to be a channel staple.
I do own a Mini Z RWD, AWD, FWD and Mini Z Buggy. For the Mini Z FWD you can actually convert it to AWD or RWD to your liking and for the Mini Z Buggy, I have bought a set of drift tires for it plus you can convert the buggy from AWD to RWD(And maybe FWD?). But with the AWD chassis You can convert it to RWD or maybe FWD(adding extra weight to the front).
I have the rally car style wltoys and its an amazing little thing. I put black electric tape over the wires to make it drift
Yes, they are so much fun
As a mini z racer u have the same awd mini z. I would recommend to use the rechargeable tripple AAA battery vs. Disposable tripple AAA.
That little hand made me chuckle.Oh and whether 2wd or 4wd it's all skidding to me!
Haha
Great vid and nice use of the track. My K969 currently out of action as the spur gear chewed up the lipo lead but whilst I like it find it understeers a lot and perhaps would have done better with the 989. Might try open diff front to see if that helps
Yes, I’d say rear diff should be locked and front open, it may handle a bit better that way
I did the same to the battery lead in my K989!
Thanks for the warning, ill be sure to manage the wiring before i run mine
Cant wait to get my little wltoys green drift truck...i am impressed with how well you drove it completely stock...seems totally locked in...Great job!😊
That r32 with the hks livery is just beautiful only thing I wish they did different is not those types of batteries and had lipos u could put in like the other
Macpherson style suspension is when the strut is apart and on top of the wheel spindle like the D9 bulldog chassis. Neither of those is a macpherson style. That’s just a normal IFS
.I love my mini z and the wl toys ones cause i can modifiy 1/24 scale model car kits to use the bodies and parts from the model kits to make any type of car i want and as scale as i want as well o have beautiful custom drift cars i buikt with model car models and the mini z and even road racing super cars as well using the model car kits. And also i have raced this exact wltoys car against mini zs and smoked them in a regular race not drifting is where this really shines compared to the mini z speed wise
what a brilliant video, really enjoyed watching this. the speed of that beast at the end is just nuts!
Cheers dude… yeah, so fast!
To be honest the one thing I don't like about both is the steering angle. Both of them have very limited steering angle which is important for drifting
I really want to get into kyosho becuase it’s a fun hobby and my area has many events dedicated to kyosho drifting and racing but it’s just too pricey
I get that the machinery is the highest quality but for the scale it doesn’t really make sense to me 😔
short answer no. long answer no. Mini Z are popular due to the quality and realism coupled with an amazing racing community.
the lock diff front and rear cause the wltoys to understeer and can't maintain the sideways .. it just pretending to be a fwd biased awd
the chassis looks way nicer on the wltoys...
That pointing hand killed me Tomley! 😂 perfect
Haha, seems popular in the comments 😅
The edits and the accent man I don't see how you don't get more views. Like for my mate
The open dif has a better hook up and regains traction after a satisfying drift.
The locked dif's definitely want to keep the car sliding longer but probably requires less throttling and more sailing so to speak
Great comparison.
I have both of them and we have a bigger mini Z course that I race the mini Z on with the other guys.
The WLToys is the run everywhere else car and I actually enjoy the WLToys more than the mini Z.
In our Mini Z's we run the rechargeable EBL 1100 batteries off eBay and they have a lot more power than the alkaline batteries.
Awesome, I’ll check them batteries out 👌
I got the k989 on aliexpress for 40$ delivered to me in the u.s in less then 7 days. Really fun little car. Would never pay 200$ for same size car when the k989 is excellent
I think you can still adjust the throttle on the wltoys with the bottom two buttons
for drift tuning a WLtoys, must do is checking out Beaver Hobbies videos.
a little lower gear ratio and a little more steering angle helps drifting a lot,
running stock electronics to stay budget friendly. WLtoys does have a habit
of gearing tall trying to impress with maximum speed numbers.
Love the Mini-Z/28th scale content! Curious what/how you're getting the footage of a camera stuck on the side of the car. That looks really awesome!
Door mounted go pro… duh
The mini z is kinda like the xmods I really liked a long time ago idk if anybody knows about them but the mini z is like a crazy upgraded version of xmods
I like the new” little hand “style pointing. I think it’s cool and funny 👇👇👇😜😀
1992 I put electrical tape around the tyres of a cheap rc car to do power-slides, back in those days 'drifter' meant tramp/vagrant.
i think the mini z also comes with a gyro, I added one to my WLtoys and it drifts nice
Gyro, whatz it is? In pikcye or porsche model?
@@jonurzelai4502 afrc v3 gyro
@@EXTRA_SLIDEZ true, Ive seen it on sale, but suitable for 1/16, "low cost" 4wd rcdrift cars?
@@jonurzelai4502 idk ive only tested it on my k969 but it was pretty cheap so it should work
I have both one , the WLtoy is more worth to buy . here are some reasons : 1.WLtoys is much cheaper than kyosho , not just the vehicle , including modding part and maintenance fees 2.WLtoy is stronger than kyosho 3.WLtoy is much easy to let your car turn to what you like.
OK thanks bro...
Scx24 receiver/esc combo works great with k969, if you have it laying around after furitek swap, give it a try and compare it to mini-z again ;)
Awesome… I do have a spare 😎👌
Very cool video...not surewhy wltoys locked diffs and mini z did not though..at end that wltoys truck hauled arrrz! Looks like you used a hi quality radio with that one though..😊
The mini z has a ton of aftermarket parts too.
Crips that last one was quick!
Yeah, struggled to see it after a few laps 😅
Tracks looking good! Sweet onbody camera cuts and that finger pointer 😂! Have you treated your carpet at all? For our portable carpet track we give it a light coat of spray silicone.
Cheers dude. I knew people would like the pointer 😅. I’ve not treated the carpet, I use it for all sorts of cars, so don’t want to make it too slippery. It’s pretty cheap stuff anyway, so I’ll replace it if it gets too worn 👍
Those little cars are awesome, both look great and run so well! Excellent video, really enjoyed it :)
K969 doesnt run "so well" at all ... sorry .😉
Track had way too much traction for drifting imo. Should be hard plastic or PVC.
Dr!ft Sturmkind cars awesome as well, and look much more realistic while drifting. 👍
oh haha. have the k989 for half an year now and its AMAZING! the amout of money you save if you buy k989 is amazing. and you can upgrade the hell outta them! anyways, great video as always!
Yes… awesome little cars
The main difference is quality of bodies, the Kyosho ones are so detailed, they are collected alone.
Cant wait for the part 2 of brushless mario
Hopefully coming soon 👌
We love the hand!the latest version of the Adams family "the Thing": Tomley's family " the Thing!". 😂😂🤣😂
Haha… I knew people would like it 👌
Love the Skid Factory finger pointer.
can you put a mini z body on a k969? would be cool because then you get the scale looks for way cheaper
Some Mini Z bodies are compatible, others require some modification. Beaver's Hobby is a channel all about the K989 and he has a video about which bodies will work.
Yes, I expect it would need a bit of modification to fit
The mini z has plethora of upgrades you could ever imagine.
Also the track it seems you got the small one, they do a bigger wider 50 tile track. Could be wrong but yours seems like a 30
that is deffo a circuit 30, designed for dnano
Hi dam this i think u a really good rc ytber with reviewing cheaper rc cars I was wondering if you chould do a video just show how to properly upgrade a rc car bc I have an wltoys a979 monster truck but I want to do a few upgrades to make it better 😊
I may be upgrading a few this year 👍
Love that new finger pointer(x
Haha cheers
I just noticed the giant torpedo heater aimed directly at the chairs, and for whatever reason I find it hilarious.
Which 1/24 or 1/28 scale drift car would you suggest today for indoor carpet drifting?
K969/ 989 for the Win & quite durable. My Pitsky loves them , sometimes he even catches them. Wipe off the slob with my t shirt & send them (hes got 4 of them) again.
Just getting in to RC mainly mini crawlers but looking at drift mini z also... you are bloody great to watch.
Have a sub 😁
Thanks Jeff… glad you enjoyed it 😎👌
@@TomleyRC no problems mate, love the format! I switch between you and Kevin for a day and night experience, order and chaos if you will 😁
Yes, I get that a lot... it's like I'm the older brother and Kev is the uncontrollable younger one who's had a few too many skittles and destroys everything 😅
I have clon of kyosho and the original and kyosho is so refine, it is perfection. The other ...pff, not a good product stock but the problem is that you have to upgrade the servos because doen´t work fine and was a mess. I whanted to send hard but it didn´t work fine. I still have the Kyosho after near 9 years and Still love it.
i know this video is old, but mini z will take aaa lithium batteries. used to use them on xmods back in the day, the rechargeable ones not the ones they sell for cameras and stuff in stores now although im sure that would work as well.
I have a WL with that same Chonkster controller. Can anyone tell me what the dip-switches are for?
I dunno 😅
Are those white gloves really tight? They don't half make your hand look smaller!
The Mini-z is nice and small. I'm sure I'll want one at someday.
What's better for drifting a locked front diff or a one way front diff
One way to help with turn in
@@crashtestdummy27 thank you, I'm new to Mini z'
I liked the "and across the line" homage the the original Tear Gear
Great test and 6.92!! Great driver and rc player!!
Lap record! I need a wall to note the times down!
Completely stock, out the box no worries no bs just sideways drifty fun!!!
I love my lil k969!!!
Mini z is cool too but I'm a budget basher fan.
Wow it small and cool hope it's in Jamaica
I'm waiting for my K989 to arrive (this week?) and I downloaded a bunch of wheels and tires to 3d print. One set caught my attention and made me wonder what if I make them like a fan? AWD means they're going to suck the air from under the body, potentially both cooling electronics and increasing downforce...
I considered getting the truck but: same battery, extra load! They even say it lasts a couple minutes less than the others, plus (again) with the same battery it will have to split the voltage, making it slower. Now, whether that's going to be noticeable or not is another matter, but that's how I decided what model to buy XD
I like the pointer finger 8-) were can I get on of those
Haha, a lot of people have said the same 😅
You should check out the Sinohobby Mini-Q Q2. It's around half the price of a Mini-Z and you can use most of the Mini-Z parts on it.
I just got the Q7 and its a blast!
Hello, thanks for the video, excellent content. What material os it the track?
Great comparison and I love your pointer, made me LOL.
Keep up the great work. Carpet track looks epic, do you have a build video for the track.
Thanks Mike… the track is a good distraction when I’m working haha
A great comparison, could you run the mini z on grip tyres, with your gps device on both std and the posh batteries to see what the difference is ???
AA Batt testing is on my list of things to do 😎👌
@@TomleyRC those batteries really seem to have woken that z up....
I’m Envious of your track! In fact, I’m green Jello over it!
I learned mini zee has a much better radio than wltoys...i think you would have done better times if wl was locked in with more precise steering control for sure..
I enjoyed the video and you have a great setup. If you don’t mind me asking an off topic question, I would love to know is what adidas were you wearing in the video? Are they originals and possibly a UK specific run? I want a pair! I realize the video is a couple years old, but I would still like to search for a pair.
seems your more familiar with an open diff, rwd setup.
im looking at this from a real world situation and your style does need to change with the AWD, getting on the throttle earlier and keeping lined up with the straights.
cool video tho
for the smaller ones a none carpet smooth surface is way better for drifting, 4wd drifting is a lot more difficult tho but almost impossible 2wd on that size. but it can work
Not with both diffs locked the car will just spin those cheap one usually have bad throttle proportions so hard to give it as little throttle as it needs
Can you please do a review of the scx10 2 deadbolt. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
Maybe.. although it’s a little old now
nice video, i have wltoys cars but sometimes i would like to buy a mini z drift, do you know the mini z initial d models? i don't know if there are a good option.
Now, if we can only figure out a way to drop a Castle 1721 2400kv motor & XLX2 ESC into either one of them cars, then we're talking! 🤔😄
Nice vid, they look like a great fun! 😎👍
Lost all the clips for my K989 (the Fiesta Hoonigan one) due to a puppy flicking at it...sort of the reason I bought it. Have a new puppy and he was having fun chasing it around. I even upgrading to ball diffs, but recently stripped out some gears in the front somewhere.
Replacements are annoying...but that MiniZ seems like garbage for the price, especially with the need for AAA packs like the Xmods. I don't know whether to just order a new K989, the truck one I think, or go for a MiniZ (perhaps I'll like it better)
Get a Mini-Z if you can… they look good and are nice to drive 👌And just get rechargeable AAA’s 👍
@@TomleyRC How about the HBX 2188a?
Thanks for the great video! Not that we would expect anything less from You! CHARLIES CARS!
That was fun! Would've been really interesting to see the lap times from the K989 as well!
Watch the end... that's pretty much a K989 ;)
@@TomleyRC Yeah the grippy tires makes a huge difference!
That's a grate idea thank u..
@@TomleyRC i got a locked and a open one in my 989, handles real nice and the rear slides like realistic drifting
I would sit and drift for hours around that track if it was in my garage 🤪great video
I do often get carried away and lose track of time 😅
Which came out first Wltoys or Kyosho. They look way similar products just wondering?
Excellent comparison.
Cheers dude
The WLtoys Force truck controller works either the drift car & the rally car 😊
I'll take the wltoys for only 50 bucks, do the fpv version and see if you can get faster time
For $150 savings, I'll figure out the WL toys drif. Especially since it has a metal chassis. So i can get 4 cars for the price of one and have my friends use the extras so we can race equally and see who's the better driver.
Or i can get 2 and dump $100 into making a track
There's options when you save $150
Mini z just seem like a slight better Xmod.
Would you please identify the blue firebird in the background at 9 seconds? brand/scale?
I fuckin' LOVE your new hand dood!
Haha, you and many others by the looks of it!
Got the WLToys 284131 just a couple weeks back and it came with locked diffs front and rear…. Or at least they seem locked. Haven’t taken them apart to check for sure. All the reviews I have seen says they are open, may need to open mine up to see for myself.
You can tell if you can spin the wheels individually you might need to hold one down
