The Kuki People: A Historical and Cultural Overview
The Kuki people are an ethnic group living in the northeastern part of India, particularly in the state of Manipur. They are a complex ethnic group consisting of multiple tribes, traditionally residing in hills and mountainous regions. The Kuki people have a rich history and culture, with agriculture and trade traditionally being their main occupations.
The history of the Kuki people dates back to the British colonial era, and many of their tribes participated in the Indian independence movement. The Kuki Rebellion of 1917-1919 was one of the most significant historical events in which Kuki tribes resisted British colonial rule.
Traditionally, they were animists in their religion, but in recent decades, many have converted to Christianity. The Kuki culture is rich in traditions, including music, dance, and craftsmanship.
A significant characteristic of the Kuki people is their strong sense of community cohesion and respect for traditions. They place great emphasis on passing down teachings from older generations and transmitting ancient customs, songs, and dances to younger generations.
