  • Cambry Kaylor was a promising equestrian vaulter with dreams of competing internationally. At age 18 she suffered an accident while vaulting, leaving her paralyzed.
“The first week of physical therapy. We were working on my balance. I thought to myself, ‘Just last week, I was balancing a handstand on the back of a moving horse, and here I am and I can’t even sit up on my own. Who am I? I’m not Cambry Kaylor. I’m a crippled version of what I used to be.”
Sometimes Cambry is asked if she dreams of going back to that fateful day and preventing the accident that paralyzed her. Hear her answer and how it has changed over time in this Hope Works presentation about our plans, God’s plans, and what we can do when they seem to conflict.
Hope Works is a series of videos captured at live events where presenters share interesting insights about hope and faith and how it works in their lives.

Not one comment mentioned this, but she is a wonderful speaker and storyteller. Able to engage with her emotions to just the right amount, and able to use comedic delivery and body language to tell vivid stories. I love the fact that she "wanders" around the stage just like other good speakers do. You'd be surprised how few able-bodied speakers do that and just nervously stand still the whole time. Not to mention she casually flexes her wheelies which still shows her athletic talents. Ngl I thought she was an actress at first. I don't see her paralysis limiting her career, with her talent and spirit she'll find success anyhow.

Disability doesn't define anyone. I am a healthy young man, i smoke 4 packs of illegal tobacco a day and drink so much you wouldn't believe, I still go to gym and can run for hours and lift etc. but I would trade my legs for her state of mind. I am boring, having nothing interesting to say to anyone, never had a relationship and a complete failure at every level.

When I was in a wheelchair for a short period I started doing wheelies after a day. It's easy and fun. Kinda like you sometimes just stand with your weight on one leg and the other leg is there just to keep balance. It's natural and easy, a change of balance and releases tension on your back.

When I was younger I would often borrow an old wheel chair my grandma had lying around and pop wheelies at speed, climb sidewalks while doing a wheelie, etc. I'm not disabled, so I'm pretty sure moving my hips helped a lot with the balance. But it was super fun. More people without disabilities should use wheelchairs for fun.

"Will I be able to have children? Will anyone ever want to date me?"
In 1989 I met a 19yr old girl who was in a wheelchair as a quadriplegic from a broken neck (car crash when she was 15). This year, we will celebrate out 28th anniversary. We have 2 grown children (both conceived and born naturally) and recently, our first grandkid. Over the years there were doubters and even critics, that it would never work. It would never last. But we proved them all wrong and proved ourselves right. I'm from New Zealand (she's Canadian) and at our wedding our moto was "Mo Ake Tonu Atu" which is Maori language for "Forever And Always".
Saying hello to her was and is the best thing I've ever done in my life. Best wishes to you and "the Hitman".

The bible says that God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity but of power love and self-discipline. Jesus loves you bro, you just have to get to know Him..then you'll understand where that strength comes from :):) read it and try to understand because once you do...its on haha it also says that in the bible..we have blind folds on when we deny Him. I remember when this happened too. I was no longer a vaulter, as I had progressing rheumatoid arthritis, but my sister Flo was. I remember feeling so sad that day, even though I never had the chance to get to know Cambry. I was sad not only because Cambry had been severely injured, but also because I had lived a similar experience, and knew her recovery would be a lot harder than mine.
I am so glad Cambry found herself, found her way through the gloom, and found her happiness again. I also would not go back and change my past so that I no longer lived with a chronic dibilitsting disease. I have learned things I may never have learned. I've become stronger than I ever thought I could. And I learned to find happiness without being able to do sports and many of the things I used to be able to. Even with putting aside a few dreams that were no longer possible. I thank the stars every day for having a chance to live at all in this fantastical universe. I've opened my eyes to a whole other world of dreams.
And I'm so happy that Cambry found her happiness and strength in the face of such hardship. ❤️❤️🌻❤️❤️

Of course we all know where I came from. But I have to say she's a remarkable young woman! There's so many people on this planet, including myself, that take all of life's gifts for granted. And yet we are reminded time and again, that life in all aspects, no matter how mundane the action may be, is a precious gift. How? By people such as herself. Through adversity they rise up and reclaim what makes them human. Why simultaneously, showing us, that we need to stop showing pity for ourselves, pick ourselves up from the boot straps, and keep going! In whatever form that takes!

Ik this is a late comment, but I have epilepsy, I can't drive and when I'm out with friends and people my parents expect me to tell people that we need to put me in the back seat of the car with the doors kid locked and they will only see me as mature if I can jump out of my comfort zone to say those important but embarrassing things. Who would be jolly and joyful about that? I can't swim and my parents freak out about me living on my own, which I understand, but that doesn't make me feel like an adult. I can empathize with you because it takes ALOT of courage to find humor and humble yourself enough to ask for something sooo important but humiliating!!! Thank you for being such an inspiration of Humor, Happiness, and Hope!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing your inspirational life lessons Cambry. You’re very brave. How do I know?
When I was 17 I came very close to spending the rest of my life in a wheelchair, when I had a massive motorcycle crash. I broke my hip, pelvis, three ribs, my right foot, and bones in my back but not my spinal column. Also dislocated my shoulder and had concussion for 8 days. It took me three months to walk again properly, though I was back on my girlfriend’s motorcycle four weeks later - in snow and ice. This was 1978.
I’m not sure I could have coped as well as you do, and I’m not convinced I’m as grateful as I should be for surviving.
I don’t share your faith either. But I respect your right to believe.
Indeed conversely, I believe if there is a supernatural supervisory entity looking over us, he must have a odd sense of humour.
I wish you all the best. Your words have caused me to take stock of my lucky escape. For that I’m in your debt.
Be safe, be well, be happy.

As someone who is afraid of many things, paralysis is something I want to avoid. I can't see myself in the difficult position of being unable to walk, unable to use my arms, and the mere thought of having to stop drawing, writing, painting, baking, cooking, well just working in general terrifies me. The fact that someone who had so much had to give a lot of it away and is still happy despite it is nothing short of improbable. There was a speaker who came and talked at our school about his time as a teacher and one student stood out to me when he began talking about them. The student was a boy who at a very young age was hit by a semi truck and had his legs amputated at the waist, that boy survived but could no longer get around like you and I can. The teacher went on to explain that when this boy asked his mom to het him a bottle of water off the counter, instead of doing it she told him to get it himself. Most would perceive this as unkind, but it turned out to be the kindest thing she could have done for him. The boy climbed his way up the counter and got the bottle of water, if she had not told him to get it himself he would never have learned he could get it. This boy did not use a wheelchair rather he used his arms to move him around and despite how hard that would be, he got good enough at it that by the time high school came around he could get to classes on time every day. This boy was also a wrestler and a very good one at that, taking first in state after his last opponent made the mistake of trying pin down the legs he didn't have. When I look at his story and look at Cambry's they have at least one thing in common, despite the difficulties they had to face they found a way to do things that made them happy. To say that they are inspirations sells them short of what they do, living as they do isn't inspirational, it is a spark that can ignite thousands of lights and forge changes never thought possible. For every incredible act comes another set of infinite possible sparks and makes the future bright with more incredible acts from the fires those sparks set. Do not forget that it is not what you cannot do that defines you, it is what you already do despite what you cannot do that makes you.
