- Ganel-Lyn shares the gut-wrenching story of her sister Meg’s suicide. She provides advice for those left behind and a message of hope to those contemplating suicide.
It’s important to know how to reach out to someone thinking about suicide and to learn how to support people with anxiety, depression, or any mental or emotional distress. Medical and mental health professionals can help.
Ganel-Lyn’s bond with her sister was unbreakable, and she did everything she could to help Meg. But suicide is complicated. When a loved one commits suicide, the people left behind wrestle with the question “What more could I have done to save them?” Few people want to talk about suicide, but it affects everyone.
Ganel-Lyn recognizes that some mental and emotional conditions are extremely exhausting to the heart and soul. But no matter what you may be struggling with, life will never be better without you. You are beloved. You are needed. You are worthy.
Ganel-Lyn believes if her sister Meg were here today, she would shout, “Stay in your body! Keep on. Try one more time. Your healing will come.” As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland said, “Do not vote against the preciousness of life by ending it!” Seek the help of medical and mental health professionals and a supportive group of people. There is help. There is hope. The exhaustion is real. Depression is real. When at the end of a very hard cycle of depression I find myself crying out to God telling him I am exhausted! and I cant go on, but the hope enters my mind that there are brighter days ahead and he pulls me out. Love this video it's helped me already

Thank you for your message. I've recently begin a journey of pain and depression that, logically, I can comprehend... Except when it hits. This journey is new because I denied the existence of my pain for over 20 years. I can talk about it and recognize it, but then it's debilitating and, for me, it's getting worse. No one can plan depression, and I'm working with support to keep myself on a stable path.

I’m a Muslim, but I‘ve also been dealing with depression and suicidal ideation since high school, and this talk really spoke to me. Satan really manipulates your mind when you’re unguarded. Thank you for this. I lost my brother just about 3 weeks ago and I mourn deeply for him each second of everyday. I had my first dream about him two nights ago. He waved at me and he looked very happy and safe. Though his death has been very painful to all those who loved him, I must say it was through his death that I truly allowed Heavenly Father back into my heart. It was through missing such a huge piece of me that I found great comfort in knowing he is with our Heavenly Father. I know he is real and that he loves each of us dearly. Thx for sharing. We've had 3 suicides in our family & it's the worst! I miss them each so much! My mom, aunt, & g-ma! My heart aches for you all. I know my family members who couldn't truly progress here on this earth anymore & did their best, are flourishing on the other side of the veil. They have each visited me & I cherish those personal experiences. To anyone struggling, cling to Christ & do your best, He will mk up the rest. It's sounds easy, but I know isn't always. His love is perfect & whole. He carries me more than I realize every single day....God bless everyone affected by this illness.

Run, don't walk to a qualified psychiatrist or counselor. You need help! There are medicines and coping skills to learn. Find a supporter, someone who loves you despite your illness. Learn more about your issues. There are many resources to help with mental illness. When you are in the pit is when you especially need a supporter. Think of it like AA. They tell you to have a person you can trust to get you through the worst times. Let that be your qualified, medically trained helper, and your support person or persons. Rely on the Saviour, if you can. If not, get spiritual help through blessings. Again it is so important to have a helper or two to buoy you up. To get through those dark days and nights. With lots of counseling and medicine YOU can get better. Not well, as such, but able to enjoy life and be glad you still have a life. God Bless!

I understand both your sister and you. I am a survivor of multiple suicide attempts. It was not until I reached out to The Almighty that the change happened. I struggle often with this. I pray through this. If it was not for The Almighty I would be dead. I understand the exhaustion of soul and body. I go through this often. What you may find different is that every time I attempted suicide. I prayed a prayer, " I want to come home! Please let me come home. I can't do this anymore." Many times they had to do CPR and the paddles to restart my heart. If it were not for The Almighty, I would be dead. I went through much for all of my youth. I went through extreme bullying. Despite all of this. I graduated college and studied over seas in France. What I had no other choice than to permanently separate from the family of origin. I could not and cannot change them. I cannot rescue them or anyone else. Only The Almighty can do this. In order to survive, I put The Almighty, first and foremost in my life. I opened Scriptures for the first time in my life in 2011. I never knew how it would change my life. I had someone to hold onto. I had someone holding and carrying me. Without Him, I would be dead. With Him I live day by day. No one can heal or change a person besides The Almighty.

When she said "our imperfections do not cancel out our worth" I started crying. I've been struggling with depression and anxiety for so long and so often I am beat down the voices in my head telling me that I'm not worth anything because I struggle. But when I pray to God I hear the Spirit telling me that my worth is infinite, and that I am a daughter of God. Even though my struggles are so so hard and sometimes I feel like giving up, I know that there is ALWAYS hope through Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Their love is unconditional.

@Minh-Quang Nguyen Heyy, that was my same issue aswell & i had to battle it all on my own. Nobody understood my pain but Heavenly Father! He loves you and deeply cares for you. He is constantly watching over you & ensuring that he guides you in every step. Don’t give up & if you need someone who will understand you, im here! And I’m glad to say that with the Lord’s help and strength, im a survivor from depression and suicidal thoughts! Stay Strong & don’t give up!!
I understand. I promise. I struggle with those same thoughts. But there's always a constant reminder that God and Jesus love us, even if it's hard sometimes to feel that.

Don't give up on this life for the next one. Please let Heavenly Father be the one to transition you. You have strength and value no matter how challenging your fight becomes in this life. Please trust god you can't see but believe i should have been dead many times. I ran off the road went off a cliff rolling 15 feet i ended up in the creek upside down. I could not get out of my car i was drowning i yelled GOD HELP ME 11 OCLOCK AT NIGHT WHO WOULD SEE ME IN THE RIVER. A MAN CAME DOWN AND GOT MY CAR DOOR OPEN I WALKED UP THE HILL THIS MAN GAVE ME A BLANKET AND SAID I HAVE TO GO A AMBULANCE IS ON THERE WAY. JESUS SAVED ME I SCREAMED FOR HELP AND I GOT HELP PLEASE GIVE IT A CHANCE TRUST JUST PRAY A LITTLE AT A TIME. HUGS

Faith has carried me through suffering, has carried Ganel-Lyn through suffering, and could carry you through suffering too.

Another lovely message of hope from the Hope Works channel. This dear sister relayed her message so beautifully. As hard as it is, and as much as it pains us to see we cant save those we love, this is an inspiring reminder that there is only one Saviour. What a SPECIAL person you are! You sound to me like an enabler being involved in codependency issues! Me Too!!! We mean well but need to work out this issue effectively. You women use different techniques to control others and their problems! We men enablers lean towards the arm of flesh to get it done! Both techniques wrong and we learn the hard way on that one! I lost my sister 6 months ago and I am struggling to accept she's gone. It hurts so much to know she was in so much pain that she took her life. It breaks my heart knowing that if she was sober and not in the middle of a PMDD week, the Shelly we all knew and loved would never have done this. I lost my dad at 14 to a work place accident. I know the pain of loss, but suicide that is a completely different experience.

Our worth is a FACT whether we know it, seek it, or EVEN believe it...it had existed on its own even before this life and IS the purpose of the creation of this earth, and the heavens and the universe we live in.....the worth of each person's soul is the same of those that abuse this fact vs. those that know this worth and the worth of others in the 'judicial system' of heaven and I would think those that abuse the worth heavenly father is more concerned on their actions (this may hurt some but if we put on eternal glasses you may understand).........and the person who sees themselves as a peon to the person who has perfection issues their worth is not connected to what we think of ourselves...our worth is in the knowledge that we are sons and daughters of god...in this great knowledge does the great deceiver tireless efforts is focused on trying to hide, distract, dumb down on our eternal identity with his tool of hopelessness...know that hopelessness is a tool of the adversary, know that when someone enters hell that is what hell is made of..hopelessness.........your worth STANDS ALONE................ and is NOT interconnected to what YOU THINK of yourself...your worth IS an eternal fact...and as members of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints and just being a members of the human family it is our duty to let our brother's and sister's know their WORTH and their DIVINE IDENTITY, to come unto Christ and follow him for in and through him is our great plan of happiness and salvation...for we are all god's children and our eternal worth exists.... whether we believe in it ....or not....

What are the eternal consequences of suicide? Just wondering.

And I hope you are well as well as your family members.
Regarding that question, it is a bit complicated. The scriptures say "thou shalt not kill" or "thou shalt not spill innocent blood" that includes your own life, however God knows the struggles of each of His children. It is important to understand that the consequences of suicide have an effect on all affected by it. Chain suicides in other family members is probably the worst consequence for the living. While the ones that committed the act, in the scriptures as reference, will continue with their depression struggles, unless they trust in the only being who can heal them. Jesus Christ. It's also important to understand that death is not the end and many of the challenges we face here we will continue to experience in the after life. So to answer your question in the worst case is that you don't trust the Savior to heal you and you eternally struggle with depression except you won't be able to commit suicide again and will live eternally in this awful state. However if you do allow the Saviors help He will clean and help you feel whole again. I hope this helped in any way. And if you are fighting against these feelings please don't give up, keep trying and keep going, there will always be help and strength.

Sometimes it's not just 12 years or trying just one more thing; sometimes it's a lifetime of not getting better, a lifetime of hope without a better world, of faithful prayers without answers. But if we stick it out - however long that life may be - broken, battered, battle-scarred, hanging on by threads to Christ and His gospel through a lifetime of treatment resistant mental illness, financial misfortune, relentless stress, physical pain, or whatever interminable mortal disability we suffer perfectly or imperfectly, there will be reprieve and joy and glories in heaven!
My precious non took her life March 13 of this year. One day before her 71 st birthday and on my brother,her other sons’ birthday ,13. She shot herself in front of me. Oh God please help me. It has not been 3 months. I struggle every day not to end my life

We encourage you to reach out and seek help from others. Get professional help or talk to a faith leader or another trusted adult. Pray for help, and believe that you will receive it.
