Finding Hope in Broken Dreams | Liz Wiseman

  • What’s the difference between a dream life and real life? Liz Wiseman asked this question and came up with three things to do when we feel crushed with broken hopes and dreams. Every day we see images in social media, magazines, and advertising of the dream life. Everything’s in the right place and looks (or seems) perfect. But real life is messy.
There are three things we can do to find joy among the mess.
    1. Avoid the false God of perfectionism: Strive for steady improvement without toxic perfectionism. Be compassionate about what you decide to post on social media. Post what’s real instead of what’s filtered-your successes and your disappointments. What’ll happen is instead of promoting jealousy, you’ll bring hope and healing, and you’ll let people know that they’re not alone.
    2. Share mistakes: Research shows that when we share our vulnerabilities and mistakes with others, they see us as courageous. When we admit our mistakes we also feel courageous ourselves, which helps us move forward in faith.
    3. Look to Jesus Christ for healing: He heals our broken hearts and binds up our wounds. True healing come from Jesus Christ. That which has been broken can be made whole.
Life is messy. Things break. We break. Even if we’ve had our hopes dashed, we can have hope because of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Through Him, we can be fixed.

My wife would clean the playroom for my kids when they were younger. Always bugged me that she didn’t make them help. But she’d get it cleaned up and put away and it was perfect. The kids loved it. Their imaginations came alive and my wife and I would smile and walk away. Not an hour later I’d go in there and it was a disaster. Like epic disaster! And I’d be bummed that all that hard work went to waste. But within a day or two she would have cleaned it all up again so that they could go in there and work their magic again. Then one day my wife put a decal above the door that says” please excuse the mess. Our kids are making memories.” And I learned from my wife that sometimes other’s happiness is more important than my own, and her happiness was providing joy to her children.

You are right Shalece, it is so easy to notice our mistakes and minimize our small accomplishments. I loved in a Come Follow Me Lesson, several weeks ago that a quote from President Henry B. Eyring was cited, he said that he asks Heavenly Father to help him see the things he has made right and not focus only in the wrong things he has made. Thanks for sharing your insights, because many times I feel the same. I know that Heavenly Father loves us. He wants us to be happy and is so proud of our efforts. As President Nelson said: ¨The Lord loves effort.¨ Keep striving you are doing great and are an inspiration to so many! Hugs!

Your talk brought back something I learned about years ago. May I suggest you look into Kintsugi, also known as Kintsukuroi. The Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise or discard. Kintsukuroi is a way of living that embraces flaws and imperfections. When a piece is repaired it is considered even stronger and more beautiful. As you suggested with your broken piece, the damage is now part of it's history and it became even more precisely because your experience. You may want to consider spending another day, with your son, adding a little "gold" to your statue and to your wonderful, golden story. Thanks for sharing.

Sharing mistakes can help others, at my job I tell the students what mistakes I made when I were in their position. They come to know that the mistake they make nearly everyone makes, they then stop viewing themselves as failures and gain more hope of success.

Thank you very much to Liz Wiseman! This was wonderful! I truly adore this! I’ve watched other “ Hope Works”, and they were generally wonderful also… But I feel like perhaps this was the best one I have heard so far! Or that I got more out of it! And/or it has been a while since I have watched another “Hope Works“! Loved your story about your sons and yourself, etc.… And your whole story about the Japanese piece and it being broken, etc., and allowing your son to glue it back together, etc.! And how you ended up making what was potentially a very negative outcome into a very positive one!

I have learned a lot about God in my 18 years of life, and I have for as long as I can remember, had unwavering faith in Him. Only in the last few years, but more specifically this last month, I have learned many new things about myself that were previously a mystery. I have come to discover that my biggest struggle in life, is myself.
I am highly doubtful in my own abilities and potential, causing me to give up on things or simply never even try doing the things that I have a strong desire to achieve and accomplish. If I struggle to do something or it doesn't come out good enough, I find myself abandoning the project, feeling that I am failing at it.
I have also known and felt God's love for me and I am so very grateful for that. But at the same time, I also feel like I will never find someone who will love me for who I am, mistakes, brokenness, and all; someone to be my eternal companion. I have this overwhelming feeling that at some point, somehow, I will just ruin it, and it is something I cannot bear because it will be my fault.
I am extremely forgiving of others, even to a fault if that is possible, yet struggle to forgive myself of things I know are so trivial. I all too often blame myself for other peoples actions. Let me provide an example. I live in a small town, and our ward is also very small. I often find that people aren't interested in becoming friends, which is their choice I guess, as much as it hurts. But then, I take it as I must be doing something wrong, I must be unlikable, this must be my fault. Whether it is true or not I am not sure, but I have a suspicion that I am being too hard on myself. I wish I wasn't, but I don't know how not to.
So now at least I know what the problem is, whereas before, I did these things unaware of the underlying cause. But I have yet to find a solution. I feel like talking about it will help, but since I don't have any friends, I am resorting to the comments section as you see here. I wish this wasn't such a negative comment, but I am just trying to do my best and overcome this.

    Beautiful just beautiful 💗
Life is full of problems waiting to be solved.
We call math problems and view them as challenges to be solved. When they're solved we feel a great sense of accomplishment and we grow in learning.
So obstacles in our life are actually opportunities to grow,.
Thank you for sharing it helped me to ponder a deeper understanding of life.
When working with stained glass we vview an accident of, a child breaking a glass, dish or any perceived, "thing of balue," as a soon to be work of art... and save it to be melted in a beautiful stained glass.
    "Broken but not defeated. "
Thank you God for the atonement.
Jesus being broken on the cross but not defeated. ❤❤❤

There is this Japanese concept called wabi-sabi-it is a belief that there is beauty in the imprefection. I feel that this fits perfectly (ironically) to what is being taught-the gospel of Jesus Christ is about finding the beauty in imperfection.

I guess the breakdown for me is that the Church for me always used to talk about (and still does at General Conference) teach and laud the ideal, and now the church finally acknowledges that people are broken and need help, but they need unofficial leaders to do it rather than talking this way from the pulpit, and I'm supposed to forget they just taught "the ideal" for 150 years.

BYU's mission statement starts as follows: "The mission of Brigham Young University - founded, supported, and guided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - is to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life." I fear the quest is the mission and only goal.

Do you believe in the resurrection? ✝️
( after 4 days in tomb..
Can any one come back to life? )
Do you remember what Jesus said to her?
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
    ( John 11:25-26 )
The Dreams of Lazarus were broken when he died!
In the real life of his family and community, they had NO hope that he will ever come back to life again on this earth!
Jesus can make 'whole' what is broken!... bring back to 'life' what is dead!...
Remember, what Jesus said in the verse (Luke 18:8)?
Will He really find 'FAITH on the earth'?
I believe God can RESTORE my career and my family back in peace 🕊️🙏 to serve in humility with love ❤️ 🇮🇳
