- A la Claire Fontaine,a French folk-song,enjoys such universal popularity in Canada that it's melody holds the place,as it were,of a national air. The unaffected simple beauty of this melody inspired Canadian-born composer Robert Farnon in 1958 to transcribe the music for orchestra
The result was a miniature tone-poem of exquisit beauty.
This clip is taken from a recording made at the Royal Albert hall London 31st Jan 1971,Still comercially available,
and is dedicated to David Ades and world wide members of the Robert Farnon Society which has now existed for over 50 years and still continues to thrive and attract new members.
Robert Farnon is conducting The Philharmonic Orchestra
(leader Rodney Friend)
And yes, I’m a native of Cleveland Ohio suburbs, and in my child hood, I too having much love for that sweet funny old man name Barnaby! And to think, that show saved me from the streets of Clevelands troublesome gang violence, and the like....is saying it lightly! I became an outstanding musician because of The Barnaby Show, and with the influences of this amazing Masterpiece! So I humbly, Thank You!❤️🎶❤️🎶❤️
Thank you Crosby for you touching comment
Such tender music. I must admit I wept the first time I heard this. It means so much to me because, when my mother lay dying, she asked me to play some beautiful music for her. I immediately put my Robert Farnon CD on and A La Claire Fontaine and Lady Barbara from the Horation Hornblower Suite made Mother smile. She went home to Heaven the next day. Thank you Mr. Farnon!
Magnifique!!! Céleste! Angélique! Hymne à la nation Canadienne-Française.
Who much do I love what this song represents and how it touches my very heart and
soul! When God created music I truly believe that this song comes close as to what He allowed mankind to sound like!
Yes I grew up watching Barnaby in Cleveland and this song means more to me now than it did as a child!
God’s blessings on those who create such experiences as this in music!!!
BRAVO with a standing ovation for this beautiful arrangement, this one is my absolute favourite!
This is my lullaby for all time! I😅 stand in awe of this piece!
I grew up with Barnaby, Woodrow, Captain Penny and the others when we moved to Cleveland, Ohio. recently there was a show honoring all of those shows on PBS...the easier days of life
This has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written
Anybody else miss Barnaby? Grew up with him; this tune puts me in mind of nothing else.
Been in the South too long.
I totally agree. Puts me in the mind of nothing else. Barnaby was a good part of my childhood. Will never forget.
A superb orchestration and arrangement performed by a superb orchestra! Little did I know growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, watching the sweet and funny man Barnaby that this would inspire me to have a 50 year career in music! Thank you Malcom Frazer for posting this. Thank you to Robert Farnon, what a master orchestrator you were. And thank you Lynn Sheldon (Barnaby) for filling my young child's heart with warmth and friendship and calm! You are all in heaven now and I will join you there soon.
Just lovely. Farnon wrote for strings like no other,
What a surreally beautiful arrangement, masterfully played. Thank you, Malcolm Frazer for posting this. I have the record and enjoyed the music lots of times, but seeing it conducted by the master himself brings it to a whole new level.
My father was friends with Rob Farnon for 50+ years..wonderful brilliant man..They worked on many albums together..
This arrangement brings tears to my eyes.I remember watching Barnaby as a little girl. This song was so beautiful.Time of innocence.Music is truly TIME TRAVEL
You are not alone. Ran home for lunch from Elermentary school just to watch Barnaby. Then had to go back.
Ah, another Cleveland Ohio area kid. I too was lucky to know Barnaby. I heard this played on the classical station here WCLV, and was again transported. I feel safety, peace, calm and pure joy while it plays.
Truly a Masterpiece! One of the Greatest Conductors of our time! I am moved to tears when listening to this piece! And they are tears of joy and appreciation ! He will surely be missed, but forever loved!🎶❤️🎶
I only discovered Mr. Farnon's work ten years ago and I have been in love with it ever since. Captain Horatio Hornblower, R.N., A La Claire Fontaine, all of Mr. Farnon's works are such gems to me. When my mother lay dying two years ago, she loved the cd of this. It calmed her and, as she put it, reminded her of nature's beauty. I only wish i could have told Mr. Farnon that, but, sadly he is gone, too.
Voilà une excellente interprétation de cette œuvre. En plus une bonne prise de son pour du direct et très bien filmé ! Merci à Malcom Frazer pour cette heureuse découverte.
Robert Farnon is always someone I refer to as Mr Robert Farnon ....a gentleman and a superb conductor arranger where respect is always due.......
This work is lush and gentle - I remember being disappointed when it didn't play out during Barnaby (yep, another Northern Ohioan).
I'm quite interested in anything you might have of Claire Fischer..... thanks for documenting so many of the fine jazz happenings from England!
This piece of music always touched my hart (yes a Barnaby fan from Ohio) but it was more to it I have always love this music thank you so much for posting . It just has taken me some time for me to find it !

This song was the theme for a local childrens show called " Barnaby" in Cleveland, Ohio on WUAB Channel 43....I remember it as clear as day it
always made me feel sad but a very nice piece of music. It takes me back
to my childhood.
Yes it was. Remember it quite well. A much simpler time then.
@@kencornell7357 yes it was a simpler time back then no cares or worries just being a kid was good enough.
I remember that show too.
I am glad to see that others also find this piece of music to cause tears as well as joy. When this was used as the the theme for the children's program "Barnaby", out of Cleveland, Ohio, I used to cry when it reached the music beginning at 0:59. It is so strange how some music does this to so many of us, and I sure wish I knew why.
It definitley tugs at the heartstrings. Born and raised a northeast ohio kid.
Il y a longtemps que je t'aime, jamais je ne t'oublierai.
First heard this when I was 5 years old. I am so happy you uploaded this masterpiece.
@IwshIcldstrtover
So true. Especially for those of us who recall "Barnaby", a gentle memory of a more peaceable time. "If anyone calls, tell them Barnaby said hello. And remember I think that you are the nicest person in the world, just you." A needed boost back in the day, one still treasured by those Buckeyes who saw and enjoyed.
Amen to that!
Beautiful..tears tears so beautiful
Lawsons chip dip and Cotton Club ginger ale commercials on the Barnaby show... oh yeah, dont forget Kenny Kings
@ShaKelMuzik I fully agree. What a wonderful piece of music, what a great show, what a great era. I look back at my childhood and realize how lucky I was to live in the time that I did. The stuff on TV today? Complete trash with no creativity. And I was lucky in another way - I got to meet Barnaby, Woodrow the Woodsman, Captain Penny, and Franz the Toymaker! Also Mr. Jingaling, Ghoulardi, The Ghoul, Hoolihan and Big Chuck (then Little John). Even Super Host! Great memories, great times
Oh my god what a treasure !... I've been a fan of the great Robert Farnon for a long time and this is the first video I've ever seen of him ! Thank you so much... Do you have more ? Please !
If anybody calls, tell them Barnaby said Hello. And remember, I think you are the nicest person in the world, just you.
Such a much simpler time then. I am so glad to have come up in that era of Barnaby, Superhost, Mr. Jingaling The Ghoul, and Hoolahan and Big Chuck. To be a kid during that time was magic.
Perhaps children of today, and society, are the losers...there seems to be no (or at least, not as much ) words of tender encouragement for children as we had at the closing of 'Barnaby'. I remember this played as the 'Barnaby Theme' . Years later, I appeared on the Lynn Sheldon WUAB 43 talk show discussing the bandleader Glenn Miller and his service orchestra with a principal string player from the Cleveland Orchestra and in Miller's AAF ensemble, Ernest Kardos. Mr. Sheldon was very gracious as was Mr. Kardos. If memory serves, both Farnon and Sheldon passed away on the same date. It truly evokes memories from this Elyrian.
Glenn Mittler Sadly there isn’t now days. I am a 12 year old and I just discovered this beautiful piece and how I wish I would’ve been able to see this as a child it’s truly magnificent. No tenderness is giving to children now days which is why children try to hide away from the harsh world of today and go on their phones as an escape of society’s judgment. Sometimes I wish I was born in the same time as my mum and I wish I could do things that wouldn’t be judged and I could have a more carefree life. I remember reading the fare away tree by Enid blyton and it’s still my favourite book and I remember wishing that today was still like that where it was the countryside and free to explore and roam but where I live it’s just unsafe and no one goes out no days. Sadly people just think it’s us being addicted but the dark side is that we want to escape from the pressure put on children and we enclose ourselves in this video controlled world.
This is an arrangement of Farnon's "In A Calm," one of his early recordings. :)
By the way I'm from Cleveland Ohio as well
Thank you grandpa
@tritonrocks
Lucky fellow! I grew up in Sandusky, so I enjoyed both Barnaby and the other Cleveland friendly hosts, plus the Toledo Bozo and Patches & Pockets, the later lived just east of us in Huron, and died last year in June. Only met Mr Jingaling, tho my brother & I did get to be on his show, around 1970.
Bet you have some great memories.
He wrote the original Josette's theme/music box for Dan Curtis' Dark Shadows. It was later re-arranged by Bob Cobert to the more familar version.
Hello - do you have anymore Farnon footage - left a message on another post but just like to mention that I have the original SKETCHES OF SINATRA / BENNETT on cd quite wonderful I have to say....all the best.
I can no longer have audio on this video, there’s no sound only video. Why is this?

Sorry Jim, but this is not an arrangement of Bob Farnon's" In A Calm" you can find that also on UA-cam
4:10-4:52 Reminds me of Richard Strauss.
No sound on the video.
: )
No sound?
@tosherification
Did your mother live in northern Ohio? This tune is especially poignant for those who grew up there.

Una totalmente irreconocible “A la claire fontaine”, tan arreglada y pretenciosa, que pierde totalmente su esencia y su encanto. Habría que llamarla “A la sale fontaine”.
A totally unrecognisable song, so arranged and pretentious, that it loses its essence and charm. It should be called "A la sale fontaine".
:)
