The album ‘Complainte pour Sainte Catherine’ was a revelation for me when it appeared in the mid 1970’s. From that time Kate and Anna have been artists I’ve always loved and revered. There are few musicians whose work truly embeds itself in one’s life, becomes almost a part of you. The McGarrigles were that, for me. Thank you.
I learnt to sing this song in Kindergarten back in 1958. I was 5 years old. It remains as one the the most touching songs I have ever heard, and believe me, I've heard a lot. I discovered Kate and Anna in 1978 in Ireland as someone who had their second LP thought I might like it as I was - and still am- French. Indeed I did and still do.
OK avec ce commentaire ! à moi aussi, elle me manque beaucoup ! heureusement youtube nous permet de la revoir et l'entendre ! : elle est là avec NOUS ! Yes Kate !? M-Laure
I remember hearing Kate and Anna sing this at Camden Town Hall London (I think) decades ago and it's haunted me ever since. If only they'd recorded it. Good to hear it again from the family.
Toute ma vie a été cadencée par les géniales chansons des merveilleuses sœurs McG. Si le monde était normal elles devraient être encore plus fameuses que Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt et Neil Young ensemble.
because they did things the way they wanted. They are eclectic and not for everybody. But for all of us (and now you) who know about them, how every lucky we are oxoxoxox
I wish they were better known. Both their songs in the English language and the French language. If music like theirs, of that quality, was better known, it would improve humanity.
There is a zillion of performers you could ask the same question about and a another zillion who you could ask why are they well known. Okay, not zillions, but you get my drift. Anyway ask Simon Cowell and not me.
In about 1980 I first heard their song Na Cl on a radio Science Show in the land of Oz - and I went to the other side of the moon to get what was then a tape ... and I've loved them ever since.( Even the French Canadian ones :) WE played the Swimming Song in honour of of son Liam in May this year - such a bright ray in a sad time...
For years Kate and Anna came to a club in NYC that no longer exists, the Bottom Line, once a year and I would always go. They were like no one else in the music business of that time that I know of.
I always think about their song, "what'll i do when you are far away, and i am blue, what'll i do?". Oof, i don't want my turn to come when i have to sing these sad songs.
There's Lily and Sylvan Lanken, Anna and Jane McGarrigle, and Rufus and Martha Wainwright. But, I don't recognize the tall man in the back or the woman on the right. Who are they?
Sad that your french seems to be lacking, my post had nothing pro separatist in it, I have been a hard core federalist all of my life. My comment was targeting old Qc nationalists.....you didnt help.

My scotish french teacher in 1968 taught me this song. I still sing it 53 years later.
Formidable! Kate vivra pour toujours. Ces larmes sont encore dans mes yeux.
What a beautiful tribute.

Ian Hatwell you probably already know this but they do have a recording of the song on the album “Oddities “, it’s a beautiful rendition.

After all this time, Kate is still sorely missed.
I discovered the McGarrigles late in life. I now have a number of their records which are brilliant. Why are they not better known?
