The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a world encompassed in nostalgia for me. Lately I've been playing it a lot and trying out different experiments... And they sometimes lead to really funny things. The Gerudo Valley guards for instance can break the game in many ways if they are forced to appear outside of Gerudo Valley / Thieve's Training Grounds. Let's try sequence breaking this Zelda game in strange ways while arresting Link!

There's actually one different spawn location for Adult Link.
If you get arrested before getting the Hookshot, you wouldn't really have any way to escape so instead of jail, they throw you outside the fortress.
Are you sure that's true in the original OoT? I thought that was something the OoT Randomizer added to prevent softlocks.

I totally forgot about this! I remember as a kid I didn't know I needed the hookshot or where to find it to progress the game so I just got Epona and got myself into the Gerudo Fortress and got thrown out multiple times.
Implying the Gerudo intended Link to escape prison using the hookshot, so they throw him outside since he wouldn't be able to escape prison. How considerate I guess?
The stuff that happened on Link's dream sounds just like a real life dream. "I was on this field with a castle and a princess ran away on a horse from some big nosed dude, but then I was arrested and appeared on a very bright location where an invisible friend gave me something they weren't supposed to have, but then I got arrested again and then there was this owl and I was thrown from a cliff into a river"

Can Link be arrested inside the jail? If so, will the guard despawn and place you in the jail, or will you be stuck on some loop where you get jailed?

A guard can arrest you in the jail. Once you get arrested, the game will reload the map and spawn you in the jail like normal. Since the map reloads, the manually spawned guard will despawn.

Morpha is then arrested and brought back to the Gerudo prison in a giant basin with cuffs on its tentacles, tried, and sentenced. Poor amoeba.
IIRC, the guards throw you in the river if you don't have the hookshot regardless of your age. It's to prevent you from getting softlocked if you go to the fortress with Epona. Also, I'm pretty sure the guards inside the fortress will throw child Link into the prison as well, though the only guards that are there as a child are the stationary ones and the ones you fight.
I actually tried this once. I got Epona and rode into the fortress without a hook shot to see if I could get trapped.
As an adult, they just throw you in front of the Carpenter's Tent.

Isn't there a guard outside the fortress from the Haunted Wasteland entrance. You can never get there normally before getting the gerudo pass so I wonder why the guard is there.
You'd need an assembly-level debugger to try to figure out why some of these things happen, but it's most likely pointer errors. The guard is trying to run some code that's making assumptions about memory locations which are no longer safe when placed in an unintended place. The guard code is expecting a cut scene or level data to load in a certain memory address, so when you trigger the guard on the title screen that part of RAM actually has these other cut scenes in it at different times. The other effects are probably just null pointers and missing data, trying to read trash.
This is exactly what speedrunners abuse when wrong warping. They first trigger a cutscene by activating the blue warp, then proceed to leave the room, but instead of the correct value being in the memory, other values are replaced by the cutscene and thus lead Link somewhere else. It's exactly the same when SwankyBox tries to activate the Gerudo guards while in a cutscene.
I’m sure that’s exactly why you get the ocarina of time instead of the fairy ocarina during that broken cut scene. The object the code is calling probably doesn’t exist anymore during that scene because it’s been replaced with the OoT.
You know, after seeing Triforce%, I would kind of want to see Link get arrested on the final cutscene of that.

Getting Link arrested at the literal end of the game would've been amusing. I wonder if Ganon would be effectively resurrected or will the game just forcefully play the cutscene and end anyway.
Reminds me of the ending to Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
As far as I'm aware, there is no flag in the game's code for defeating Ganon. The only thing that defeating Ganon does is that it tells the game to play the end cutscene. So if you interrupt the end cutscene, the game would think that you never even started the fight, let alone finished it.

I’ve always wondered why link surrenders when he’s caught…
Literally he can defeat the entire castle guards in single handed combat as stated in the “sent back to your childhood timeline”
He literally showed up at the age of 10 and beat every single knight Zelda’s army had.
And became their literal champion. And their leader.
Surly link could easily defeat the “guards” of a makeshift prison fortress. And that’s not even counting the ridiculous feats he’s done by that far into the game.

Saria giving link the ocarina of time might have something to do with the title screen having its own save file with items etc.
I thought that too at first, but we’re talking about the opening cutscene. The save file loaded in memory has already been wiped clean by this point.
@@Tustin2121 Could it be that since it's basically the same cut scene as when Link get's the OOT the dream version still has the OOT saved as an item which then is pulled up in the glitched version of the Saria cutscene since it's working from the item and NPC list for the previous one?
Adult men are taken by the gerudo for certain *purposes* beyond jail time. Young Link is not suitable for these purposes and so he's thrown into the river instead.

@@Spicystachegamer the gerudo probably have _some_ standards. Violating a _nine-year-old boy_ is obviously horrifying and unacceptable, probably even to the Gerudo, but also completely useless to the survival of the Gerudo as he’s not yet capable of reproduction.

When the two witches appeared and told Link that "its morbin Time" and then they all danced to Hyrule Castle and morbed into another Existence, that was so poetic.

I'm pretty sure the deal with that Saria bit is that is a test room and from a point in time of the game's development when there wasn't an intermediate Ocarina as the Fairy Ocarina was a late addition.
I’d wager it’s more that the game put Link into the Lost Woods map, but with the wrong room loaded (maybe the first room you enter when entering Lost Woods from Kokiri), which is why everything is unloaded except Link. I recall speed runners doing a lot of tricks that involve the wrong room being loaded, and the camera in that cutscene doesn’t really give us a good view of where the first room is. The collision is always present even if the room is unloaded, so Link wouldn’t be falling. All the actors and visuals for that room are just unloaded.
As for the Ocarina, my guess is maybe that dream cutscene has the ocarina of time force-loaded, so Zelda can throw it in a different setup for that scene? That’s just a wild guess tho.
You should of tried that at the end of the game when Link and Zelda are talking in the sky and she's going to play the Ocarina to send Link back to his time.

Now I really want to see a romhack of OoT that just makes the entire game into a stealth game/much harder OoT. Just place a guard in a few spots all over the game and don't get caught while traversing the landscape of Hyrule.
YES! instead of monsters and bosses, you have to reach the end of the dungeon without getting caught. if you do, you lose a heart and if you lose all hearts it's game over.

Yes! I wanna know what the game does when it tries to throw adult Link out of Hyrule castle, because it’s ganon’s castle in adult mode, and the game is apparently quite hard-coded to check link’s current age for what to load for maps accessible to both child and adult.

I was curious about what happens after you get arrested. What if you get arrested while escaping Ganon's castle being destroyed with that timer up. Also, can you make your way back? What about during the Ganon killing blow? Can you go back or is the castle destroyed and without a bridge

I played with the action replay on the Gamecube. I remember using moon jump to get over the wall as kid Link, getting arrested, and just being tossed in prison like normal. I never got thrown in the water....

It sounds like you're triggering a wrong warp due to the odd way the game triggers cutscenes. I thought only blue warps could do that, but apparently the gerudo can too?

That awkward moment when it turns out Zelda was Ganon's boyfriend, so she arrests the "hero" who "saved" her.
That would actually be a good twist for a video game, where it's the supposed hero who's the real antagonist, while you play as the princess who's content with her current relationship with the "evil" sorcerer 🤔

Reminds me of Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle. She doesn't seem to care that she's kidnapped. In fact, she treats the Demon Castle as her home. She seems to be scared of the hero that is supposed to rescue her.

I'd love to see a part 2 where you see if the game is completable after getting arrested at various points. Like in the water temple boss fight would the boss respawn if you went back to the boss room. Can you make it back to the Ganon fight after getting arrested? Would be fun to see.

Fantastic video! My favourite cutscene that we got to see the effects of the shenanigans is 8:12 as the game breaks like crazy and it just keeps going, had me laughing non stop.

I wonder if maybe the game uses the same variable that tells it where to put Link if he's arrested to also determine where to put Link during a cutscene? It seems like the variable always resets to the prison, but getting arrested during a cutscene, or on the title screen, seems to have other data written to the same spot.
Pretty much. It's an index into something called the entrance table. Wrong warping tricks affect the same variable.

So, the Garudo is essentially a cute reverse version of the wall master? They catch you and you are warped to the dungeon interior instead of the entrance.
One time one of the elite gaurds arrested me mid fight. Like I didn't loose or anything, they just said "don't take us lightly" while I was using dins fire and I got thrown out for some reason. I don't know what kind of sorcery they're pulling but it's not natural I'm telling you that

Just goes to show that the event of 'spotted by Gerudo Guard object' always runs the same functions of:
1. Play whistle sound
2. Disable player controls
3. Link puts hands up
4. Iris out transition
5. Despawn Link from current position
6. Spawn Link in Gerudo Fortress Jail, in knock-back position
7. Iris in transition
8. Enable player controls.
I mean, there's probably a lot more than that to it, but you get the idea. It appears the memory address for the arrest function changes, depending on the game state.

The spawn where they throw you off a bridge occurs when the game checks for the Hookshot and fails to find/validate it. The game does this to avoid you being unable to escape and it just so happens that Young Link counts as not having it, so it throws him off a bridge.
