I had a thought relating to the idea of “Dark King” and “Ruler of Hell” being related to the shadow of their captain. This could be similar to how Zoro acted on Whiskey Peak and Luffy acted on Sky Island. Luffy is constantly out in the light fighting the big bosses and literal Gods, but Zoro fights in the dark and deals with the sneakier and ‘weaker’ opponents. I assume Roger would have been very similar to Luffy in this manner, but we don’t know for sure. I don’t know how credible this could be, but it feels like a common trend with the Straw Hats to have Luffy fight the big battle that gets the news stories while Zoro cuts down enemies and gets regarded as a sort of rumor because of the mystery.

So another thing about Katakuri is his Zan Giri Mochi attack which when he uses it...his haki changes shape. So the idea that there are different types of hardening, seems likely. And remember that attack was compared to Luffy's Gear 4 haki in looks and for Luffy in particular, his haki during gear 4 definitely isn't on the same scale as base Luffy.

Totally possible that the title came from instead a mastery of conquerors haki, he isn't the type to be shy about doing whatever needs to be done, it could be gained from his mastery that he used this to dominate any given battlefield with weaker willed foes. To the point of giving basic commands like flee, bow and panic and his will being forced on them to obey, things those people would like to do anyway that he prays upon. Add in the first mate's job is to do the dirty work of their captain, things the captain would rather not do but needs to be done... I could see these as great reasons for the name
A question that interests me is this. Can a swordsman use destruction haki through their sword? What I mean by that is can zoro for example coat his blades in the destruction haki and make his slashes cut deeper and do internal damage? Because with a punch that's a lot easier to visualize but doing that with a sword seems like it would be TOUGH to pull off and you'd need to be a master swordsman for it to truly work and cut and destroy only what you choose.

We know why he was called the dark King we had a character in the show say it within the show itself. I forget who it was but find it my Internet sluths it exists. If you take into account the estimated time that Vegapunk gave for Kuma's and Bonney's modifications and surgeries and time to recovery, plus when Bonney set sail, it would be 5 or 6 months at best. It was probably September in the One Piece world when Vegapunk gave the estimation, then 6 months passed for Bonney's surgery, so it would be March. Another year for her until she could be under the sun. 6 months passed and now it's September 1st which is Bonney's birthday. Another 6 months pass and now it's March which is when Vegapunk said she can go out. She sets sail 2 months before Luffy did when he turned 17 on May 5. 4 years ago, when it was probably September, Vegapunk said that Kuma's modifications would take at least 2 years. If you take all that into account, the Pre-Timeskip probably took 5 to 6 months.
Literally from day one my interpretation of the epithet was that he was the other side of the pirate king. Honestly it never once crossed my mind that everyone else hadn’t already realized that.
The way I always understood Rayleigh's title was that he was the "Dark Horse" of the Roger pirates. That because of his bounty Roger was the one everyone thought was the one to watch out for, but that Rayleigh was Roger's equal, two different sides of the same coin. The only difference was Roger had a dream, and Rayleigh supported his dream. However, as I'm writing this. Mihawk on the other hand is a threat to their governance as a whole that everybody and their mother knows about, and was televised just 2 years ago as someone fighting for the world government. If they let him off the hook and don't try and chase him down, it comes off as an endorsement of an active pirate who made his name hunting Marines. Mihawk has also probably grown stronger since he got the title of warlord,

Really love Rayleigh. During his prime pirate days I got him in the top 5 of that era. Essentially why I never liked the Oden narrative of fans believing they were on the same level. Oda to me clearly has displayed Rayleigh as more of a pivotal figure both pirate wise and strength wise .

I personally always assumed the title Dark King referred to Rayleigh being the "unofficial King of Pirates" after Roger. After Roger was executed I assume Rayleigh basically inherited his status to a certain degree. He also was at Raftel, he also knows what the One Piece is and I'm certain he wasn't significantly weaker than Roger. As Roger stood at the top in the end, so did Rayleigh to everyone in the know. He wasn't as known as Roger and he never claimed the title. That is why he is the Dark King. The effective but hidden King of Pirates until another Roger comes along to claim it, as feared and respected like Roger by everyone who's important. I could also be wrong about that but that was always my assumption.

You know that theory about Rayleigh being Mihawk's dad? What if Yoru used to be owned by Ray until Mihawk beat him in a duel and claimed the blade? Quite the wild theory, but if Ray was the one to turn Yoru in a black blade, the Fraud allegations would skyrocket and I,m always there for some drama.

Basically the reason Rayleigh is the dark king is because he would have been the king if Roger never existed.

Is reyleigh stronger than garp? I know it's easy to say no because Roger is supposed to be clashing with garp. But I mean Zorro is barely not as strong as Luffy and it's probably because of will and not actually power. I'd love to see rey and garp go at it.

If you take into account the estimated time that Vegapunk gave for Kuma's and Bonney's modifications and surgeries and time to recovery, plus when Bonney set sail, it would be 5 or 6 months at best. It was probably September in the One Piece world when Vegapunk gave the estimation, then 6 months passed for Bonney's surgery, so it would be March. Another year for her until she could be under the sun. 6 months passed and now it's September 1st which is Bonney's birthday. Another 6 months pass and now it's March which is when Vegapunk said she can go out. She sets sail 2 months before Luffy did when he turned 17 on May 5. 4 years ago, when it was probably September, Vegapunk said that Kuma's modifications would take at least 2 years. If you take all that into account, the Pre-Timeskip probably took 5 to 6 months.

The way I always understood Rayleigh's title was that he was the "Dark Horse" of the Roger pirates. That because of his bounty Roger was the one everyone thought was the one to watch out for, but that Rayleigh was Roger's equal, two different sides of the same coin. The only difference was Roger had a dream, and Rayleigh supported his dream.
However, as I'm writing this. What if Rayleigh got the title as he was the one that filled the vacuum Roger left after his execution? This is a bit out there, but maybe?
Isn't it said in the story that Rayleigh just went into hiding/retirement? I thought the Roger Pirates slipped away into the shadows, while Roger was the only one that let himself get caught.

@@femthingevelyn That would be funny, but if even the king of the pirates has an actual number on the wanted poster, I doubt that it's the case. Something worth considering is that Rayleigh's bounty might actually be higher than Roger's, because that's the case with the Cross Guild.
Garp literally said that trying to capture Rayleigh is not worth it because they'd need to mobilise everyone. Speaking of the Cross Guild, the marines actually went after Mihawk, so do they think that Mihawk is weaker than an 80 years old Rayleigh? Honestly, Mihawk might not even have joined the Cross Guild if the marines didn't go after him. He was just kind of relaxing on his island.
@@r4nd0mguy99 I don't think mohawk necessarily registers to the world government as weak, I think Rayleigh's position as someone the world government isn't going after isn't purely because of his strength, it's also because it's not worth hunting him down in a populated area constantly filled with world nobles that would have to be fussed over because he's not actually doing anything, just drinking himself to death, acting as a shipwright, and selling himself into slavery every now and then.
Mihawk on the other hand is a threat to their governance as a whole that everybody and their mother knows about, and was televised just 2 years ago as someone fighting for the world government. If they let him off the hook and don't try and chase him down, it comes off as an endorsement of an active pirate who made his name hunting Marines. Mihawk has also probably grown stronger since he got the title of warlord,

Really love Rayleigh. During his prime pirate days I got him in the top 5 of that era. Essentially why I never liked the Oden narrative of fans believing they were on the same level. Oda to me clearly has displayed Rayleigh as more of a pivotal figure both pirate wise and strength wise .

Wasnt it stated that the Black Color Haki is just to visualize for the viewers. So in the One Piece world its like invisible? If so the Blackblades should be black?
Isn't armament haki invisible to normal One Piece characters and Oda is just coloring it black for the audience? Am I misinformed?
I personally always assumed the title Dark King referred to Rayleigh being the "unofficial King of Pirates" after Roger.
After Roger was executed I assume Rayleigh basically inherited his status to a certain degree. He also was at Raftel, he also knows what the One Piece is and I'm certain he wasn't significantly weaker than Roger.
As Roger stood at the top in the end, so did Rayleigh to everyone in the know. He wasn't as known as Roger and he never claimed the title. That is why he is the Dark King. The effective but hidden King of Pirates until another Roger comes along to claim it, as feared and respected like Roger by everyone who's important.
I could also be wrong about that but that was always my assumption.
