The Lion is his pocket is his "Package". This was a BIG PARTY song when i was a Teen in the middle and late 80s. I was absolutely in Love with Prince, and i still listen to him. Check out "Delirious " from the same album, and also "Lets Pretend We"re Married".
I believe Lion in his pocket is a Biblical Reference to Lion of Judah, symbolism for Christ It’s like a bit of a double meaning because Prince obviously was known for risque lyrics but I do thinks it’s a Biblical reference. Prince has lots of Biblical messages in his music.. this being a song about the Apocalypse it makes a lot of sense to drop these types of messages into the song.
This is the short version. Check the album complete version, with instrumental part in second part (as very often with Prince, if you cut the song before the second part, you'd miss the best of the song, where the musical crazyness occurs).
'Lion in my pocket..' is directly from Prince, from this song. Anyone else saying it, they got it filtered down to them from this song. That's the iconic-ness of Prince and how big of a song this was. It's a sex thing, most stuff was with Prince in his early years.
I'm pretty sure it's not sexual. Given that he's singing about the end of the world, this is a Biblical reference. At the end of the song he says "you can't run from the revelation" obviously referring to the last book of the Bible Revelation which says how the world will end. The Lion in the book of Revelation hold the 7 seals and has the power to release them. This is always how I understood this lyric in the context of the song.
@@adamg1677sorry it’s definitely sexual. The lion in his pocket is his penis and it’s ready to go or roar. Think about it snd look at Prince’s face when he sings it.
This was way before anyone was talking about Y2K. It was just Prince and his creativity, probably like the cool numbers for the last year of the 20th century...1999. This was a huge hit & we all thought, 'How old will I be when we're partying to this song and the clock turns past midnight to 1999? We had 16 yrs to think about it, lol!
I remember wondering where I would be. I was Mattie with 2 children and just in case we had a Y2K meltdown I rented a restaurant sully stocked and had a huge party with family and friends. I would have never guessed that at the time the song 1999 came out.
The song was written during a very cold part of the cold war when the US and the Soviet Union had enough nuclear weapons pointed at one another to destroy the entire planet (that's not hyperbole - they really did) and there was a fear that we all could die in a moment's notice. That's really how people lived back then. This song said "F it" I'm gonna party like it's the last day ever. For a lot of people, this was their first exposure to Prince (in 1982). Little Red Corvette was the follow-up to this. Then he became a superstar when the movie Purple Rain came out in 1984.
New years eve 1998 this song was blasting all over the world, it was amazing thing is this is actually a doomsday song. If you listen to the lyrics hes talking about how it's the year 2000 and the world is ending in nuclear war, so the only thing to do is party like they have no worries.
1982, I was 10 and we had no idea about y2k yet...we barely had computers and most didn't have one or use one yet. Lion in my pocket is a condom brand. This was played at every party between 1999 and well...now...lol 2000 came and went and so did Prince but Gen X Grandma is still here! Subscribed :)
This is from 1982. The band lineup is Dez Dickerson on guitar (yes, he left the band after this album and tour but was in the movie Purple Rain as a solo act), Lisa Coleman and Dr Fink on keys, Brown Mark on bass, Bobby Z on drums, and Jill Jones on backing vocals. Lisa, Mark, Bobby, and Matt Fink (along with the addition of Wendy Melvoin on guitar) became The Revolution on the next album, Purple Rain. They remained Prince’s band for several years. I’m going to keep recommending live performances so you can really get a sense of Prince’s brilliance. The live performances of Purple Rain from the Syracuse show or 1985 American Music Awards, Thieves in the Temple/It from Glam Slam, Baby I’m a Star/Push from the Special Olympics, Forever in My Life/It from Sign O the Times and soooo many more are all great. Here’s the link to that Forever in My Life performance in case you’d like to check it out. This was the first Prince song that I ever heard back in the early 80's. And whilst I liked a song or two from his earlier albums, my favorite Prince albums where I liked most of the songs were PURPLE RAIN and AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY. And I could be wrong, but, the two ladies in the video were Lisa and Wendy.
Not really although many people took it that way Prince filled his music with lots of Biblical messages. The lion in his pocket is a Biblical reference to Judah the Lion or Christ The song is an anti war song about the the of the world. Basically he is saying while bombs are falling and the war mongers war mongering he will NOT be afraid because he has a secret weapon in his pocket, and that is Christ. So he will have fun in the face of the impending apocalypse
Missed this reactiion. One of the best song! When it was written, 1999 seemed so far away. Here we are in 2024 and this song is not only still bad ass but relevant. Prince was prophetic. Wendy is the dark haired girl and went on to play an integral part in Prince & the Revolution. This was 1982. Damn is it that long!!!! Prince used innuendo sexually and religiously and intertwined both. "I got a Lion in my pocket and baby he is ready to roar" speaks to Judah as the lion, but also as a a reference that sexually he is a a lion. The song was written during the COLD WAR so it was written about nuclear armageddon. The song hints to religion and sex throughout. Prince often times intertwined the pleasure of sex with faith in God.
I was in HS when this song was released.... 1999 seemed so far away then, and now it seems so long ago. Some people thought the world was going to end, and the hype was intense. You bet 1999 was played that new year's eve at every party around the world. 😅

The 1999/ Triple Threat tour (1982) was amazing! 2 support acts, Vanity 6 and The Time, who's music Prince wrote as well, opened up for him. Technically, Prince wrote 2 albums + his double album 1999 for this '82 tour.
The blonde is Jill Jones and the other girl is Lisa Coleman. Jones is an actress/musician these days and Coleman writes songs for film and television these days along with another singer from Prince's backing singers called Wendy Melvoin.
The first five albums were written by Prince, all instruments played by Prince, produced and recorded by Prince. You boys…. A lion in my pocket is his private ready to play. I told you he was our sex educator. Chuckle!
Interesting thing, this song was released in 1982 (way before folks were worried about Y2K) at the height of the Cold War when folks were worried about a WWIII situation with Russia and nuclear fall out. There were folks who had predicted the world would come to an end in 2000. Y2K reframed the meaning.
About the apprehension around the year 2000-- I'm sure there were some people with apprehension for superstitious reasons; but most people that were concerned, it was about the computers. In the 60s, 70s and 80s, programmers hadn't been thinking about the new millennium that was approaching and had set the internal clocks for 19xx. So, what was going to happen was the question around all the computers in use by then. The answer, of course, was nothing catastrophic.
I was eight when this song came out in '82 and 1999 seemed so far away when Prince sang it. Now, it's 25 years later, and what I wouldn't do to go back.

That was Lisa and Wendy, guys. From The Revolution. You've reviewed 3 Prince songs now, you need to read up on some of his history. He is a fucking LEGEND. The very first video of his you reacted to was from the movie Purple Rain, a stone-cold classic. WATCH IT!
You were close fellas, but the song, 1999, also the album title, dropped October 27, 1982 and was the followup to 1981’s Controversy album. But the album that shot Prince into the stratosphere, Purple Rain, wouldn’t arrive until June 25, 1984. I graduated high school in 1986 and grew up through all of it and the 80s really was the best decade to be a teenager and college kid. The girls in the video are Lisa Coleman (brunette) who would remain with Prince when he expanded to Prince and The Revolution when Purple Rain dropped, and the blonde is Jill Jones who worked with several artists as a backing vocalist for several artists in the 80s.
Great reaction guys! Prince is the GOAT. You should definitely check out Let's Go Crazy next. It was one of his many number 1 hits. Great song and performance. It also highlights his guitar skills. The ladies are Jill Jones who is blonde (also one of his many girlfriends) and Lisa Coleman. Having a lion in your pocket just means his penis wants to party. I'm just remembering how far in the future 1999 seemed when this song came out. I have always wondered if the changing vocals in this song were inspired by Sly & the Family Stone's "Everyday People."
There was definitely a run on Batteries, flashlights, toilet paper and canned food leading up to Jan 1, 2000. I think most people bought some of these things just in case. Most people I knew didn’t really think that the whole internet was going to collapse, but there was a lot of talk about the possibility in the media- the normal fear mongering.
Another awesome Song by Prince!!💜💜 Great job guys! 👍 So about, the coming of the year 2000. I was 32 when 2000 came, I had graduated with a BS in Computer Science. But backing up before that. The biggest fear to be honest, was that the entire world, computer systems, would just stop working because most software was built to handle dates with only a two digit year. Once the year 2000 hit, that wasn’t going to work anymore, ALL of those programs, in the word mind you, needed to handle a 4 digit year to work properly handling an appropriate date. Just think about it can sound like quite an overwhelming situation! So many things in the world are run by computer programs, even back then. But companies were already aware and working on the issue, to be prepared. It was blown a little bit out of proportion. It all worked out in the end. ☺️
I love all jundras of music when disco died here came prince and hall and Oates and funk from 1981 came all jundras of music hard rock was always there but came rap pop, country all kinds of music from the uk
I'm digging you both! Thank you for giving credit. Where is credit is due. Check out, (Baby Imma Star, and I Would Die for You.) Together! Let's go Crazy, 3/4's of it was the movie, Purple Rain! Anything you can assume on Prince. You will be correct. He's done them all, as well as for many other artists. Ex: Stevie Nicks, Sinade O'Connor, The Bangles, Chaka Kahn, to name a few.
A LON IN MY POCKET AND BABY HES READY TO ROAR MEANS The line “I got a lion in my pocket and baby, he's ready to roar” from Prince's 1999 album title track is thought to be a biblical reference. The Lion of Judah is a symbol for Christ in the Bible's Revelation.
We thought there would be a base on the moon by 1999 and we'd be in space. 2001: A Space Odyssey from 1968 (only 14 years before 1982). 14 years ago was 2010 🤣🤣
If I had to guess what😮 the reference "Lion in my pocket" means to the context of the song specifically, it could mean they are ready to go crazy and let loose and have a fun time. I could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me.
“Lion in my pocket” Lion was an old condom brand….he did the same thing on Little Red Corvette “Cause you had a pocket full of horses Trojan and some of them used”
1982 and that’s Lisa, Wendy and Jill. Lol, Lion in my Pocket… as a teenager I thought it was a double entendres. His Christian upbringing is interwoven into many of his lyrics. Take it for what you will.
The song is about nuclear bombs ending the world. It was written right in the middle of the Cold War with Russia. The other guy singing is Jessie Johnson. He fronted his own group called Jessie Johnson’s Reveue. The 2 girls are Wendy and Lisa. Very successful song writers, composers; and still tour today.
If you have not listened to the 12 inch version of this....please do so. This song really takes off then......IMO - a lot of his BEST lie in the extended versions of his music, and not the commercial release. And, we are not going to even start with his un-released music. And then there is his musical vault.....which is the stuff of LEGEND. Prince is not just a world, he is an entire galaxy. Twice.
Some people went a little crazy and stocked their houses with water and stuff. It's kind of like the pandemic was. My family was okay. We figured other parts of the world were going to hit 2000 before we did. So at least we would know hours in advance if the grid was going to shut down.
This was a month ago so I'm sure you already know or have already guessed, "a line in my pocket & baby I'm ready to roar" refers to COCAINE. COCAINE was HUGE in the 80's. LOL !

That was Lisa and Wendy, guys. From The Revolution. You've reviewed 3 Prince songs now, you need to read up on some of his history. He is a fucking LEGEND. The very first video of his you reacted to was from the movie Purple Rain, a stone-cold classic. WATCH IT!
Wendy joined after this. That’s Jill
Jones
Love Prince🎉
Great reaction guys! Prince is the GOAT. You should definitely check out Let's Go Crazy next. It was one of his many number 1 hits. Great song and performance. It also highlights his guitar skills.
The ladies are Jill Jones who is blonde (also one of his many girlfriends) and Lisa Coleman.
Having a lion in your pocket just means his penis wants to party. Here's the link for Let's Go Crazy

Correction first album was called For You 1978 and 2nd album came out in 1979
Check out the song/video America. Not only does he play guitar he does a drum solo at the end.
So about, the coming of the year 2000.
Prince is icon
I love all jundras of music when disco died here came prince and hall and Oates and funk from 1981 came all jundras of music hard rock was always there but came rap pop, country all kinds of music from the uk
He’s talking about what’s in his pants! Get it! Lol!
1982 was when this album dropped
saw him live in Seattle in 1984... amazing amazing
React to Darling nikki plz. It's great
We thought there would be a base on the moon by 1999 and we'd be in space. 2001: A Space Odyssey from 1968 (only 14 years before 1982). 14 years ago was 2010 🤣🤣
Have you already done LET'S GET CRAZY!!!!!? Another great one...
If I had to guess what😮 the reference "Lion in my pocket" means to the context of the song specifically, it could mean they are ready to go crazy and let loose and have a fun time. I could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me.
“Lion in my pocket” Lion was an old condom brand….he did the same thing on Little Red Corvette “Cause you had a pocket full of horses Trojan and some of them used”
Loved this song!
1982 and that’s Lisa, Wendy and Jill.
Lol, Lion in my Pocket… as a teenager I thought it was a double entendres. His Christian upbringing is interwoven into many of his lyrics. Take it for what you will.
Wendy wasn’t in the band yet, she replaced Dez.
I danced to this when it came out......2000 was a big deal. People worried that computers would crash in 1999 as the time change occurred.
Jesse Johnson sang with The Time. Dez Dickerson is singing on this song. He is an original member of The Revolution.
Twice.
Music wise 1960 to 1998 the best
My favorite song is one called SEVEN...:)
Young grasshoppers, please pick me to be your guide. I will show you the way of the purple Yoda! He was a musical genuis. way ahead of his time. 8:20
I was. Shut up!!😂❤
Good Lord the man just could not stop screaming about the end of the world😂😂
Yet another thing Gen X survived LOL
Some people went a little crazy and stocked their houses with water and stuff. It's kind of like the pandemic was. My family was okay. We figured other parts of the world were going to hit 2000 before we did. So at least we would know hours in advance if the grid was going to shut down.
Check out “Controversy” by Prince
I'm sure yall did Purple Rain but check out When Doves Cry, and Little Red Corvette
This was not referring to Y2K. It was based on the premise like it would be the biggest party of all time with NYE changing the year and the century.
82. I was 10.. now I feel really old ..
Same
I was 16!
I was 25 and just had my first child. 😮
Fellas check out the "America" filmed live in Paris video. That performance is CRAZZZZZY FIRE!
🔥🔥🔥
1982 kids
Not referring to Y2K because that wasn't a thing yet. Released in 1982.
This was a month ago so I'm sure you already know or have already guessed, "a line in my pocket & baby I'm ready to roar" refers to COCAINE. COCAINE was HUGE in the 80's. LOL !
I was born because I went to the 1999 concert
Yeah, the Y2K bug had not been discovered when this song hit the airwaves.
He has a cocaine line in his pocket and he is ready to roar.
