i just finished the book. very powerful and beautifully written. something they didn't mention is how candid sally is about her own shortcomings and poor choices (in consequence of the abuse she had survived) i applaud her in so bravely now sharing her story with all of us. 🖤
As a survivor myself, I was floored. I had no idea and then I just honed in on her words, her thoughts and all I can say is yes... that's it. There is so much more to it too and it is a bit different for each of us. My mother too knew about one of the times and also did nothing then she passed away hating and blaming me. Ironic, right? Bless you Sally and Diane for this candor and this interview.
so sorry that you went through that. its sad how a parent does nothing about it you wont trust anyone but with hel and counciling things get better. There are alot of sexual abusers.
@tabitha I, there are a ton of them. It's really crazy. In nature you do not see adults having any sexual interaction with prepubescent animals of their own or any other species but humans? Somehow we're totally f*cked. I don't get it and never have, never will. I always think it's ironic how people of the west codemn people of other cultures as being child abusers when it is all over western society too, just all hush hush about it. My heart hurts for all victims everywhere and can relate. The same for all cultures that engage in genital mutilation, especially in children. I think of them and my heart just aches for them. :'(
@@Cinnabar_and_Chalcanthite yes i understand it happens all over buts its a sickness. Who in there right mind does that to children its just beyond understandable. They should know its wrong. She’s definitely up there. I don’t think it’s necessary to compare bc we like them both. But I will say, Meryl Streep is the Dolly Parton of The Film Industry & Sally Field is the Barbara Streisand lol.. comparatively. They’re both trailblazers for different reasons. Meryl Streep showed she could be strong & feminine & literally play anything. And Sally Field fought against an entire industry of degrading men, type casting, constant disrespect, abuse etc & she still managed to end up with with her heel over the head of the Industry’s “male power”, with a profoundly impressive career to back her. Bless her heart. Theyre both icons.
I love Sally Field! OMG I can't imagine what she went through. I didn't know she was in her early 70s, she doesn't look like it. One of my all-time favorite movies of hers is Not Without My Daughter. I love all of her movies but this one touched me when I was going through a rough time in my life. We love you Sally Field!!!
Sally looks great! She was one of my first crushes when I was about 7 years old - nothing has changed. I still want a Trans Am, a cowboy hat and a Sally Field! I'm eastbound and down!
I have always loved Sally Field. I'm sad to learn what she had to endure growing up at the hands of her step father but I'm also glad she is speaking out, confronted the abuse and has found peace with her own Mom. She now has a beautiful family of her own. What an amazing woman! An incredibly gifted actress who is so honest, humble and down to earth . I loved her in Steel Magnolias as M'Lynn but I cry every time rewatching it. ❤thank you Sally for your gift to the world. We love you.❤❤❤
And yet she turned out to be such a beautiful, humble human being. From what we, the public, can see through the glimpses of her in real life, which we didn't get much of that part of her because she managed to stay private, she seems to have turned out to be so "normal". She didn't act like a diva. She was a class act in my book. Sally Field was and is such a beautiful woman. I hope she has nothing but happiness and fulfillment in her life. I'm going to buy her book immediately!
Your coming forward was strong, brave and needed.....I am a victim of child abuse as well and I am DONE letting it run me.....they no longer have power over me, and I will no longer accept any fault! I was a child....I was hurt....
It’s a shame. I read her book and she’s an Academy and Emmy Award winning actress, yet the impression of her that I came away with is that she has led a very lonely, angry, depressed life. She never mentioned one good friend, or any good relationship with a man, and described a very dysfunctional relationship with her mother. It’s a very sad book. Never be jealous of famous rich people. We never really know what their lives are like.
she admitted that she wasnt great at forming close friendships. She did kind of give the impression that nothing could truly satisfy her , in her life, in her career, but maybe her moms death and this book have hopefully made her happier going forward. Her relationship with her would-be husband seemed downright inspirational, but after she divorces him, she scarcely mentions him again, except in a critcal way. she carried a terrible burden for many years....lets hope she is liberated now...
I didn't get that impression. She's NOT Gidget. She's a normal person with problems like we all have. She choose not to talk too much about her kids, but I bet she has a good relationship with them.
Now I want to read this. I am glad to hear that Sally Field has been open about the sexual abuse that many women encounter in their lifetimes, and Sally has stood for not only herself, but for every woman, and every marginalized person. And this is why victims don't come forward right away. It takes a lifetime to process what is and has happened to you. Now we have a monster in the whitehouse who not only does not get it but says such things as if my daughter were not my daughter I would have married her. Totally disgusting. And the gloating of grabbing females by their gentals or showing up in women's dressing rooms while they are changing...makes me want to vomit. Same here. Always have had nothing but high praise and respect for the works of Sally Field. Absolutely top notch. She was never fat as some once claimed. In fact she was and hopefully still is smacking hot and absolutely lovely and on top of that, now with the benefits of the wits and the brains of a sound mature woman. Born in 1968. My first Sally Field-movie was Not Without My Daughter. Smokey and the Bandit is in my BluRay-collection and it was nice to have it confirmed first hand during this interview what is evident in the movie, that sparkles burned through the acting. It's those little tiny things you notice. Sally Field is without any doubt on my Class-A top shelf. Even when she thinks she's annoying, she's actually a delight and a blessing. That would sum up as being an angel in my book. She is :)
I feel for her I know exactly how she feels I was sexually abused by my stepdad for years and you carry so much shame and guilt and you think it's your fault even though it's not I lost my childhood and have struggled for years because of it
POOR SALLY .I'M SO SAD FOR HER. I JUST CAN'T IMAGINE HOW HORRIBLE THIS WOULD BE, EXCEPT MY FRIEND TOLD ME HOW HER STEPFATHER DID THIS TO HER .SHE HAD THOSE SAME FEELINGS ABOUT HER MOTHER. SO SAD. MOTHERS CAN DISAPPOINT.
No, don't feel like "poor Sally." She is remarkable and wise and strong. And she is a survivor. Admire her, respect her, but don't pity her. Pity her mother and other mothers who don't have the strength to properly care for their children. Pity children who face this today. As for the men... I just don't know what to feel other than rage, except more pity because it's highly likely, as most perpetrators, her step-father was a victim of abuse himself. People like Sally are the reason this sickness will eventually be cured. It can't be fixed unless we know it exists and we are willing to talk about it.
I always knew she had some very strong inner pain in the way she portrayed the complex emotions of her characters. So many evil men in this world... :(

Sally Field is a brilliant actress. I cannot imagine what she has been through. The mother is the one true and total guardian a child has. Her mother failed her badly 💔
Wow! Never know. What's going on in someone else's home and life. To think of a super star that has no problems in a home life. No picture perfect here. I do hope Sally has some closure, now. Breathe NOW.

Awww Sally...vintage and classic actress. Always been one of my favorites....man, when she played Cybil.....INCREDIBLE display of acting. Absolute practice. Sadly, her home situation may have played a role in why she played that role so well. Glad she survived it all.
I came to You Tube to see a character she played in a movie with Jeff Bridges since I just stumbled upon that part in her book. Her book will make you angry, make you laugh and make you sad at what she went through at such a young age. Who knew that my favorite Flying Nun had endured so much. 😔
I truly believe after watching this, that when Sally fields played the grieving mother in, an eye for an eye , she nailed that part because of.what she went through for many years az a young child.
The book is a great book to read. In summary, Jocko was a CM... Burt was controlling and jealous of her past relationships and success as a celebrity. Sally didn't get the love, kindness, and respect she deserved throughout her life. Sally would have been a great person to know. I wish I had known her.
I'm still shocked that not only her mother knew but so did her half sister how dare her mother believe that piece of trash of a husband and live in such denial about what happened to Sally
Wow wow wow. It’s Sally Field. Such a Queen 👑 💅🏼-& I cant imagine the number of women shes personally helped by deciding to write this book. Took a lot of bravery. She names her abuser. A lot of women (and men) don’t always don’t always do that. Diane Sawyer was respectful & reverent more than usual, but it was still awkward. They do expound on her abuse a bit much in interviews. Sally didn’t do that in her book. She was healthy about it. But its admirable of her to use her platform bc she is known to be private. Shes right there at the table with Streep, Hepburn & Fonda but she’s in a different class all on her own. Who the hell goes from doing something like Sybil to Norma Rae to the Smokeys to Steel Magnolias to Forest Gump & then to Lincoln? Have always loved her movies without even realizing it lol. Boss. 👏🏻 🙏🏻✨
Sally Field has been on of my favorites ever since I became enthralled with Gidget repeats in the 80’s. Unfortunately, channeling the horrible abuse that she experienced as a girl helped her to become the powerful, dynamic actor that she is celebrated for. Sally Field, iconic.
No. because it implies that she couldn't be any of those things if she wasn't so abused. Sorry but she might have been so much more if she wasn't haunted by terrible memories. It is a burden not a blessing. Never confuse the two.
How heartbreaking. 😢 the first question that comes to mind is why did her mother not rescue her child from that idiot man! Well, we sure would not have ever suspected. She seemed so well adjusted in the parts she played i figured she was raised in a happy family with a great childhood. Boy the way we think about things isnt always realistic. We assume actors come from amazing childhoods when sometimes they sure do not!!
Yes, I have seen men that are offenders. Thanks , have a lot of love for Sally Field , great actress makes you cry for the good memories I will say a prayer for you Sally Field, great, beautiful actress .
I just feel like there's an alluring resonance, I mean, somehow, I think she's just a good friend I haven't met yet. (Edit: I mean no disregard to the content of this video by saying this - I admit I commented before watching. God bless you, Sally. I give you nothing, nothing but love and gratitude.)
Beth S I thought the same. Can you imagine what she brought into that Sybil role from her fear to covering up and possibly pretending that the sexual abuse happened to someone else. The “it was not me” to “not by my dad” to the “does mother know”. When you go back to the Sybil role she split in a form of protection of the abused little girl.
People are talking now. Just 40 years ago, these things were kept secret even from the mothers of these children being molested. A beautiful person is Miss Fields. All the best and your book might help others to come out and seek help :) Thank you
most interviews i see of Diane Sawyer's, I don't like them and don't like her style of interviewing. This one, however, is the exception to the rule and I think she asks the right questions and shows a lot of Sally that is wonderful and respectable. Sally is so great! She is so funny and charming at times!
It's so odd how I connect to other sexual abuse survivors. It's like an unspoken bond we have to each other through our pain. Love her honesty. Mothers have to face this. Watch Jamie Dlux, to see just how prevelant this is.
My mother's words were oh God you are kidding me when I told her of my abuse I withstood of my childhood how sad we have to endure this our whole life with the shame.
You're just one in millions of us. Sorry. I went through years of therapy. I am also 71. Could not put my life together. Never looked at men. At least you have kids. Wishing you well.
I’m finally reading In Pieces now! I wanted to read it when it first came out but never got around to it. I checked w my local library two weeks’ ago and boom, they had 1 readable copy checked in and in large print to boot!! 😊 My son said “wow mom it was waiting for u” 😂 I am thoroughly enjoying it too! Sally Field is one of the greatest entertainers ever and I’m sorry she had to endure what she did and at the hands of someone whom she was entrusted to by her gorgeous mom. She obviously persevered but, still, it’s sad that such occurrences take place and for years at that 😢.. I love you Sally..I could watch your movies ALL DAY.. 🩷💜💛

Love you Sally 😍
Reading the memoir now. Amazing what her life was like and how she became herself.
Love, love this care free woman!!!
She is one of Americas’ sweethearts. 💟
Yes, I have seen men that are offenders. Thanks , have a lot of love for Sally Field , great actress makes you cry for the good memories I will say a prayer for you Sally Field, great, beautiful actress .
She could have gone down the horrible, wrong way.... Thank God something happened! Peace out!
She’s so talented!! Love her work
I feel so sorry she had these awful experiences. Diane really pushed for more detail didn’t she?? No respect Diane.
Debbie Willoughby yeah but Sally is friendly but she is onto tricks of journalists and she gives ONLY what she wants
I loved her book, filled with her honestly.
Stop child abuse, especially sexual abuse!
Oh dear lady, I am so sorry that you went through this. I had no idea. But you have triumphed. Live well.
Wonderful book.. very sad and personal.
It's a Very Sad story 😢
I am 70. I still remember her as the flying nun.
Love you Sally- my entire life!!
I truly love this woman!! I've always idolized her. Breaks my heart to learn she was sexually abused. 😔
She was superb in Norma Rae and Steel Magnolias.
So sad. Her step-dad was a monster.
The interview should have covered Sally's role as Sybil, fitting for a book entitled "In Pieces".
Mother’s know.
I would love to know her in real life. What a gem of a human being.
I just loooooooooooooooooooooooooove Sally Field
She was still a beauty here!..No doubt acting for her was almost certainly a form of escapism from her damaged childhood.
😊 My son said “wow mom it was waiting for u” 😂
I am thoroughly enjoying it too!
🩷💜💛
We love you, Sally ❤️
Quintessential American movie star. Sally Field. What an amazing woman.
She was hilarious in Kiss Me Goodbye 😁😁😁💙
