Disc brakes are great for us larger cyclists. I just don't get enough stopping power from carbon rims in the hills even with the new braking surfaces we are rolling out (save them for non hills). With disc brakes, and I can ride carbon in the hills, in the wet, and never feel lacking in braking. And as we are all starting to move to 25-28mm tires, and frames are allowing this - you can start using this power better with some wide but still light carbon rims. As for 12 speed - I would like some tight cassettes as well as ultra wide options. 11-27 with a 52-36 provides some huge range, but with 12 gears means the steps are never too large as you start getting toward the lower third. 11-29 you have to start increasing the steps from the half way point
a consumer benefit with disc are also way less rim wear.. which is arguably very good for a consumer. You'd want to make you rims last as long as possible. Discs for the win!
JogBird true but they aren't that expensive either. So when you do spend the stupid amount of money on a set of carbon rims, disc brakes makes sense. Pluss I like the extra bit of modulation too.
JogBird well, you never know what is going to happen to your rim. I once used almost all my brake pads and when I came home and inspect my rims, the metal on the calipers had started to eat my rims...thank God they were cheap Alex rims.
Been hearing people saying "why 12? It is not necessary"... Well that has been said since the change from 6 speed friction to 7 index and so on... There will be a 13 possibly and people with 12 will say the same. Campagnolo, for me is the best and will always be, the parts last longer an perform as new even after years and 1000s of Km, they are reliable. Most of the Shimano, that I have also used, are not as great from my perspective. SRAM has it so well with Etap that I been thinking about buying it bit that is another topic. Campagnolo does not need to make power meters to be great, it would be like asking SRM to create a group set. Stay within your scope to do great and when going to innovate, be sure to have others do it and test it first, partnership with someone else. Anyway, SRM and Stages have the Campagnolo power version so... why do they should think about doing it?
12th speed that is crazy. I don't need more than 10. Because I ride on pretty flat area I don't need disc. I love my caliper brake - they are cheap and work very well (if you use good breakpads). BTW I still love campagno gruppo
Well done Campagnolo. 👏🏻 It seems like after years of playing catch-up they have at last broken new ground in performance and aesthetics. I wish them success. Launching a clothing range is a smart move for an iconic brand too. 👍🏻
Andrew Kearns cheers, glad someone likes the accent. I'm worried I need to go and watch My Fair Lady on repeat to get some tips on how to have a more natural accent.
Campy going 12-speed first isn't such a big surprise, but it's always strange to hear them rank tire systems like that. Our first look of near-production eTap was three years ago now and SRAM are working on a 12spd mtb group, so maybe we'll see a coming eTap fresh-up with bring a competitor in the next couple years. And also maybe a competitor for Ultegra Di2? Adding another cog is always a fun time for equipment.
It's always Campy for me. Mass produced soulless stamp metal mass produced Shim, well, it nearly turned me off cycling with my first racer, and I will never go back.
Campy board meeting: 'Shit ragazzi, we are really behind Sramano now. No potenza (power), no wireless, our discs are a bit meh, what shall we do?' 'Add one more cog, can't be that hard, buy us some more time'
Most riders will never need disc brakes on road bikes, and the PROs haven't really been doing fine without them. And Shimano does not offer wireless shifting, only option is SRAM eTAP. I'm waiting for the moment where there will be wireless disc brakes on those bikes. That's something you can depend on :)
I’ve been trying to find frameset a compatible with the disc mechanical super record group I just bought but it seems that most disc framesets out there are electronic compatible only. Very disappointing.
When you thought they just simply couldn't fit anymore on...Wow! These chains wont look out of place around your neck soon! Will Shimano follow?..... I think so Thanks for the vid all the best Andy
New crank looks better on video than in photos. By the time this all trickles down to Potenza level my brand new Potenza gruppo might be needing replacement.
Good vid. Agree about hydraulic levers larger shape, prefer smaller rim brake levers. You didnt seem to go fast downhill...disc brakes should have great modulation. Looks like Campy are taking back the lead role in road groupo. PS: Please pronounce Campagnolo correctly....its a silent "g". Cheers
I have loved the look and feel of all iterations Campagnolo Record from Nuovo Record to Super Record 11 but I cannot get over how cheap this new 12 speed group looks. I'm sure it functions well but so does Shimano 105, Potenza, and Sram Rvial. You buy a top tier group for the best of everything: form, function, performance, lightweight, durability, and style. Campagnolo Record components have always exuded quality with superlative fit, finish, and materials. Even Sram Red, which has a reutation for lacking the overall quality and durability of Campy Record and Dura ace, looks nicer than the new Record 12 speed group.
Hm... perfect scenario for testing disk brakes? I though one of the disk brakes mantras was that they ar perfect for rainy, muddy conditions, not for descents in dry weather, lenty of corners in which you can barely get some decent speed...
What's with black on bikes theses days, why can't we get a more polished finish ie.calipers, chainrings, derailleur, would give a more premium look, leave the black for the cheaper group sets, with such an expensive group set it has to stand out,i just don't get it!!!
been a campagnolo rider all my life sad to say it they have lost there way it looks like a cheaper groupset and has now morphed into shimano no way does this new groupset look as desirable or as expensive as 11 speed super record or record very sad
Completely agree. I was actually shocked by how cheap the calipers looked. And those cranks? Ugly. The one remaining part that still looks recognisably Campag is the ergopower levers. This is one Campag 'upgrade' that I'll not be bothering with.
I've always been a Shimano customer (even if I'm Italian), and this morphing into Shimano made me decide to buy the new Chrous for my new bike. Finally same spacers between every cog (it means easily and more consistent shifter regulation), finally "standard" universal brake pads (rim brakes) compatible with Shimano and Sram. Still are remaining some (I think unnecessary) tricks to mount it: required peening tool to close the chain, more tools to change BSA bottom bracket bearings (bearing extractor + bearing press)... I hope eventually also these complications of Campagnolo will be eliminated. What I really appreciated was the 12th speed without the need of a new wheel, and the availability of a wide range of gears with little "jumps" between gears (for example Ultegra only has 11-starting cassettes for climbers, that means few choice. Even if Chrous has also only 11-starting cassettes, with the 12th cog it means less "jumps" between gears, and with the new 48-32 chainset, even closer gears, because of the possibility to use 11-29 instead of 11-32 cassette).
10:57 - comeon Caampy riders has not chnged wheels due to casette spacing sicne 1997 when 9 speed hit the market. Campag casette spacing and shub spline is identivcal on campy 9-10-11-2
I generally dislike campag but the chainset, mechs and disc rotors look good. Still don’t like the levers and the disc calipers look like rebadged cheap versions...
I'm not a fan of that "forged carbon" look on the cranks, it looks like they are dirty or were dragged a few miles behind a truck. That aside, the rear mech is pretty impressive looking, for a second I thought they had a clutch on there. It looks like Wolftooth links have become the new standard for mounting the next generation of wide range dérailleurs.
Faster than Zipp, Enve, Hed, Alto, Mavic... Fastest wheels? All brands seem to claim the same thing. I think its time that company shouldn't be able to make claims without strong proof to back it up
Ask an average performance cyclist for gearing ratio design rather than a bussiness man or pros, 50rpm up hill?? After 10 hour epic ride? People need a bigger cassette, fuckin bigger come on!
Screw all this new tech. 11 speed, 12 speed, in two years it will be 13 speed because they'll figure out how to fit it all on a XDR driver body. The prices are what's killing the whole thing. $3600 to $4200 US for a group is asking to kill the industry. I'm going to get me a single speed and say good bye to gearing. At least that way I'll be able to afford a really nice custom frame.
No Sarto frames ?? ...disapointed. Scenery, its ok (was came back after 24 days on La Palma two weeks ago... mountinas on Gran Canaria are too low and i dont see any lava)... Want a mechanical 12speed Record disc....
Free To Cycle ,black makes any group set look cheap, there's not a lot of imagination gone into the colour, high end group sets back in the day were way more stylish looking..
spot on! just compare it to shimano dura ace calipers it looks well engineered... campy calipers looks so outdated like it came from the 90's bike not worth the price...
Actually all the silver bits look cheap, glad Campag are going the classy way. Leave the Star Trek look to Shimano lol. As for the shape you're seeing what you want to see - the calipers look very similiar, you can't reinvent the wheel here.
I disagree, David. With Campy moving to clincher style rims exclusively for the WTOs, disc braking is more important than ever. Clincher rims are still at risk of delamination or even catastrophic failure under continuous hard braking.
and look at cape epic mtb racers they always add few psi more due to air loss and that's 24psi imagine PRO TOUR teams doing paris roubaix and factor in air loss over 5 hours off abuse tubeless has benefits but racers will use tubular in race situations
Campagnolo will force the issue and tell their teams to use the tubeless mid depth wheels when they are released later this year. They are simply faster. 5w faster at 40km/h is 2.5w at 20km/h because it's a linear plot. 2.5w added to 300w at the cost of around 300g is still worth it. You would need the weight penalty to be around 750g for a tubular setup to be faster.
Firstly, I don't believe they are 5w faster at 40km/h, that'll be in whatever optimal-setting-of-the-variables-for-maximum-difference situatuion they will inevitably have used. Secondly, the advantage of lower wheel weight (and we're talking 300g here) doesn't mostly come from any very minimal speed gain when cycling at a constant speed, but rather from faster acceleration - and that really matters in a bunch race situation (as well as for general fun-to-rideness at the other end of the spectrum). Thirdly, tubulars have other advantages in terms of road feel and safety (no tyres blowing off the rim, safer with rim brakes and I agree with David on the net superiority of those for general road riding). It's significant that these new wheels *are not* the mid depths used for road racing, and I'm sure the teams will still be using the Bora 50s this year (doubtless with a few riders running the 60s to get media coverage).
Technically it is great engineering, but who is the customer, I am wondering. The groupset is very expensive and Campa made a few choices that in my opinion are not the right ones. 12 speed gives possibilities, but why make two 12 speed cassettes that are more or less the same. I should be wiser to make a real mountain cassette starting with a 12, including an 18 sprocket and end with a 28, 30 and 32. The other cassette should be more a cassette for flat stages starting with 11, including an 18 sprocket and end with a 27. The crankset looks strange in my opinion and not in place if you use a more traditional frame set. Probably it looks nicer on an aero bike. The brakes look a bit cheap. The hoods of the disc version are ugly and too high, so if I want disc brakes on my bike I will choose Dura Ace Di2 or Ultegra. It is also a shame that Campa is slow on upgrading the EPS groupsets. The control unit under the stem is so 2015 and should be build in the handlebar or frameset (use the same dimensions as Shimano). It would also be nice if the shifters are wireless on the new EPS groupsets. Will I buy campa Record again for my future bikes. Probably not and that is sad because I really love the Bora wheels that I use.
Those brake levers 😷😷 Used to love Campy but let's be honest, they all seem a bit generic these days and my old Ultegra 8 speed gets me up all types of Cols!
Hmm, sorry but the new Campy Record looks cheap(ish) imho. Personally I don't like the looks of it - I could live with it on a Canyon or Trek, but not on a Colnago or Willier (no disrespect). If I would gonna buy one, than the old one all the way ( + prices will (hopefully) drop)
Who uses brakes😂 when racing Braking power discussions Rim brakes are fine May be solution for teams is all frames with thu axles even rim brakes. Can have spare wheel to suit both and stiffer frame design and rear derailor hanger stiffer with thru axle . Dream bike Pinarello rim brakes with campy 12speed eps and thru axles .
I have been a Campagnolo devotee all my cycling life - and would never ever ride anything else. [I am presently riding my third edition of Campag Super-Record}. But I have to say that this new 12-Speed group-set is unbelievably disappointing. It looks really cheap and nasty - from the cranks, rear and front derailleurs, brake/gear hoods and utterly hideous brake calipers. The graphics are horribly downmarket and the overall impression is of an entry-level group-set rather than top-of-the-range. It is simply nowhere near the standard of the previous Super-Record group both aesthetically or in quality. Sad day for Campag.
say "n + i" like "niolo", it could be quite ok (if you can't pronounce "gn" correctly that I understand, as Italian, that could be difficult from English mothertongue)
Shimano haven't released a wireless groupset, and haven't yet released a top end, road, 1x drivetrain (ultegra rx is on it's way but there's no news about a dura ace equivalent). Besides, there's been no info yet regarding the eps versions of these groupsets, so it is possible a wireless groupset is on its way.
With all the respect.... not really asking for deep research of accents or PhD in linguistics but you could at least Google pronunciation of before setting out to test it... CampaGGGnolo...
Konrad Stankiewicz Hi. I did quizz David Campagnolo (the grandson of the family) on the matter before starting the vid. Hope you enjoyed the video nevertheless.
Is there an English version of this video?
"Kampag No-low": that couldn't be less Italian if he tried! But interesting stuff...
camping yolo

Very good informative and down to earth, good to see a northerner doing reviews
MAN where was this 44 years ago!!!!! To be young again.. BEEN a CAMPY man for many many decades..
I love how Campy pushes design and function, but keeps that Italian beauty. Loving the new rear mek and sleek crankset.
a consumer benefit with disc are also way less rim wear.. which is arguably very good for a consumer. You'd want to make you rims last as long as possible. Discs for the win!

I wore a pair of rims out in under 12000 miles. The brake pads actually lasted longer than the rims!
Simon Howard dude... something tells me that those pads were the reason why you wore those rims out 😅
Nope, it was riding in British weather that did it. Shimano Ultegra original pads with Ultegra wheels was the setup
Been hearing people saying "why 12? It is not necessary"... Well that has been said since the change from 6 speed friction to 7 index and so on... There will be a 13 possibly and people with 12 will say the same.

Well done Campagnolo. 👏🏻 It seems like after years of playing catch-up they have at last broken new ground in performance and aesthetics. I wish them success.
Launching a clothing range is a smart move for an iconic brand too. 👍🏻
Hey, they were first on 11-speed too! Don't expect this to mean anything for them being strong long-term, haha
Ross Cadogan come one? Since when are they playing catch up in aesthetics? XP
Cool video, nice one!
Your videos are brilliant. Having lived in MCR for 10 years it's so good to hear your accent covering the cycling world! Keep going pal!
Andrew Kearns cheers, glad someone likes the accent. I'm worried I need to go and watch My Fair Lady on repeat to get some tips on how to have a more natural accent.

Great video and not only because it sounds like Johnny Vegas 😂👌🏼
Ashman Racing I'll take that as a compliment. I love Johnny Vegas. 😉

they are, it's olg Magura tech
Cycgnr shots fired O.O
I've used them. The lever feel was poor and the pistons didn't fully retract. Bleeding didn't help.
Most riders will never need disc brakes on road bikes, and the PROs haven't really been doing fine without them. And Shimano does not offer wireless shifting, only option is SRAM eTAP. In 2020 I believe there is still very much a place for mechanical groups and rims brakes
I fully agree. I use one myself. - Dave

Great review! a touch of humour, straight honest opinion. Boss job !
Amazing!!!!!!!!
Cool ride
Those shifters are hdeous.
New crank looks better on video than in photos. By the time this all trickles down to Potenza level my brand new Potenza gruppo might be needing replacement.
Another good , honest review by Dave !
What is the brand/model of bike used in the rim brake review ? I like the lines of that bike .
Cheers
To call them "Campy" is also a sin, it's "Campag" if you want to abbreviate.
Crazy that the wheels won't be tubular, but you can't argue with the data.
12 - crazy, what'be more applicable would be for manu.s to offer interchangeable sprockets!!
I have loved the look and feel of all iterations Campagnolo Record from Nuovo Record to Super Record 11 but I cannot get over how cheap this new 12 speed group looks. All this everything, and not a simple demonstation on how smooth that 12speed shifting is. :(
Kampag’nolo ... hahahaha
Not sure why it's so hard for so many people to pronounce the brand's name correctly: Campa-NYO-lo.
mario donkey kong? Nice Italian attempt. LOL!
Cant wait for the 15 speed groupset!!
Do you have to get a new rear hub for the 12 speed?
Hm... perfect scenario for testing disk brakes? I though one of the disk brakes mantras was that they ar perfect for rainy, muddy conditions, not for descents in dry weather, lenty of corners in which you can barely get some decent speed...
Please invest in video stabilisation, its a good video but the moving shots are giving me a headache!
Please invent video stabilisation. :)
It's a Campy video, and Campy don't believe in no electronics
Nice video. Where is that mountain road?
hi, is this new wheels whill be in 35?
What's with black on bikes theses days, why can't we get a more polished finish ie.calipers, chainrings, derailleur, would give a more premium look, leave the black for the cheaper group sets, with such an expensive group set it has to stand out,i just don't get it!!!

Agreed!
I've always been a Shimano customer (even if I'm Italian), and this morphing into Shimano made me decide to buy the new Chrous for my new bike.
Even if Chrous has also only 11-starting cassettes, with the 12th cog it means less "jumps" between gears, and with the new 48-32 chainset, even closer gears, because of the possibility to use 11-29 instead of 11-32 cassette).
... basically you're gonna ignore the sick minimalism in the Record 12, and complain about a lack of bling !?
You could’ve shown us the RD shifting through the gears.
Curious on the cassette spacing.
1mm
Same as it ever was.
Out of curiosity, where did the sample that starts @5:00 come from?
So I found it using Shazam. It is "In My Soul" by Liam.M. Could you please make sure to credit the artist in the description as he requests?
Bora wheels look hot; wonder how they compare to ENVE and Zipp...
When did Johnny Vegas lose all that weight and get into bikes?
Is this Rigoberto Uran?
why are you riding on the wrong side of the road?
mechanical is great. Campag mechanical looks nice not great. but the presenter in the video didn't seem overly enthused with shift performance
Let’s “dwealwe” in

Was he the guy who played the “Artful Dodger” in Oliver 😎...obviously a bit older now
Yeah, had to take this job on as all my "hollywood" money ran out ;) - Dave
My first thought is I don't need 12, but who knows..
Campag, RIP.
ANYONE KNOWS WHAT CITY IN ITALY THEY TEST?
i'm not even a die-hard fan, but come on, please pronounce campagnolo correctly!
That's the first thing that struck me!
👊🤣🤣👍

Dany AL Do you respect woman???
So that's where the butt-ugly 105 brake levers ran off to....
we want 16t and 18t cogs and still a 29t or 32t...
I need a 40 cassette :)
I don't feel 12 speed road is necessary, but I guess everything advances !

I’d love to use Campy at some point on a build, but the goofy and non-ergonomic shifters with the thumb are just ridiculous.
talks like DelBoy
relikvija2 you want to meet my grandad!
If you were on Campy you wouldn’t have needed to change wheels since 9 or maybe even 8 speed.....
Those brake levers 😷😷 Used to love Campy but let's be honest, they all seem a bit generic these days and my old Ultegra 8 speed gets me up all types of Cols!
gonna stick with claris
Hmm, sorry but the new Campy Record looks cheap(ish) imho. Personally I don't like the looks of it - I could live with it on a Canyon or Trek, but not on a Colnago or Willier (no disrespect). If I would gonna buy one, than the old one all the way ( + prices will (hopefully) drop)
Mario Luigi Donkey Kong!!!
Cam Pag No Low.
Who uses brakes😂 when racing
Braking power discussions
Rim brakes are fine
May be solution for teams is all frames with thu axles even rim brakes. Can have spare wheel to suit both and stiffer frame design and rear derailor hanger stiffer with thru axle .
Dream bike
Pinarello rim brakes with campy 12speed eps and thru axles .
CAMPAGNOLOS ARE NOT EXPENSIVE ENOUGH.. I WANT THE MOST EXPENSIVE GROUPSET FOR MY BIKE
lmao this comment!
Campan-yolo, to pronounce hard G is a sin
To call them "Campy" is also a sin, it's "Campag" if you want to abbreviate.
@ Steve Mawer: No. If you want to abbreviate: "Campa" - because in Italian you would never divide inside the "gn".
More ways to say it... Campañolo, it will be the closest to the Italian pronunciation if you can pronounce the ñ!
I just call them CP.
My buddies and I always say "Camp N Glow" as a joke. It's really the worst word to pronounce correctly, aside from anesthesiologist.
looks cheap
I hate the calipers and the rear derailleur
this guy's accent gets on my nerves
You really should learn how to pronounce Campagnolo......
Replace the G with N..... 👍
say "n + i" like "niolo", it could be quite ok (if you can't pronounce "gn" correctly that I understand, as Italian, that could be difficult from English mothertongue)
Yike...if you're going to publish videos like this get a gimbal for the follow bike. So hard to watch.
Jesus!
I still think they are behind shim or sram.
Where is a powermeter?!
Where is 1x?
Where is wireless drivetrain groupset?
Shimano haven't released a wireless groupset, and haven't yet released a top end, road, 1x drivetrain (ultegra rx is on it's way but there's no news about a dura ace equivalent). Besides, there's been no info yet regarding the eps versions of these groupsets, so it is possible a wireless groupset is on its way.
those brakes look so cheap
"More than anythingk"
With all the respect.... not really asking for deep research of accents or PhD in linguistics but you could at least Google pronunciation of before setting out to test it... CampaGGGnolo...
Konrad Stankiewicz Hi. I did quizz David Campagnolo (the grandson of the family) on the matter before starting the vid. Hope you enjoyed the video nevertheless.
Italians dont give this much of a shit when they're speaking english so why do you care
