    Many people here agree with what Iron is saying because it makes sense, but this is actually a well developed and researched political science topic. I really liked AW because it is clear that the writers of this game actually put in the effort and produced a thoughtful and intelligent plot supported by a well-documented study.

      @Ricky Des Safry keep in mind, that topple was under Obama. Videos on his speeches for a "more democratic Lybia" have comments sections blocked. At least the ones that I seen. Makes you wonder why democracy are necessary for countries that they don't have the support for it. The day we bring our troops home and stop butting in other countries business would be great.
      But that is wishful thinking. The US government will always have those officials who want war. Doesn't matter if they are the obvious Republicans or the sneaky Democrats. They will want war one way or another.
      Ironically enough, it reminds of that one quote from General Shepherd from MW2. "What happens there matters what happens here. We don't get to sit one out."

      Building a liberal democracy is like growing a flower in the desert. It works if you do it right.
      Afghanistan's failure was mainly due to corruption, had the US authorities done anything about it? Hardly.
      UN human rights, freedom, democracy, world peace all play a role. People can internalise those important values and live them out. Because those values are based on reason. And that is what the brave Ukrainians are fighting for, against Putin's tyranny and against Russia's political foreign domination.

    This is what I like in a memorable villain. They may be psychotic, violent and hypocritical. But they're the ones who actually have a point.
    (Additional: Glad to have so much response to this old comment. Thanks. My comment was more about how I like villains who have valid words, valid points and reasoning, but it does not justify their crimes, actions, and sacrificial solutions.
    I wish more stories allow characters and players to consider the valid points and find a good solution to the problem that's different from the villains' or find reasonable compromises.
    Advanced Warfare may have been disappointing but the scenes themselves when isolated showed a lot of potential if given the right context.
    Thank you everyone. And my apologies for anyone who have been hurt by my mistakes in this comment thread.)

  • @josephhoward4697
    @josephhoward4697 2 роки тому +41

    A lot of people seem to agree with the villain, but the villain only has half of the picture. He’s arguing for security at the expense of freedom, but the two aren’t mutually exclusive. In reality, many people want both. Power provides both. At the end of the day, people want power, because power provides the freedom and security to achieve one’s goals. I’m not just talking about institutional power. I just mean power as a general concept. The power to accomplish one’s objectives, whether they’re as simple as living to the next day or as megalomaniacal as ruling the entire world under a single ruler.
    We’ll only give up freedom for security if we feel we don’t have enough security. We’ll only give up security for freedom if we feel we don’t have enough freedom.

    • @josephhoward4697
      @josephhoward4697 2 роки тому +8

      @viktor colbert Oh, you’re one of those quote people. You do know that people can just read the comment I already posted, right?
      Anyways, I don’t see why security must require regulation. Sure, my security may come at the expense of someone else’s freedom to wrong me, but my security doesn’t come at the expense of my freedom. See, freedom and security are functionally independent of one another. Freedom without security is risky, while security without freedom is living death. In the interpersonal example I used above, the fact that my security comes at the expense of somebody else’s freedom to wrong me is a matter of comparative power. My freedom may infringe upon somebody else’s freedom, my security may infringe upon somebody else’ security, and freedom may infringe upon security in either direction. But it all comes down to power. If I am more powerful, then I can pick and choose what levels of freedom and security you have. That’s why one appears to come at the expense of another: because having more power means you can infringe upon whatever you choose.

My god you are addicted to action and slogans. It doesn't matter what I say... it doesn't matter what I do... just as long as I am doing something, you’re happy to be along for the ride. And frankly, I don’t blame you. With all the foolishness and indecision in your lives, why not a man like me? I don’t apologize. In the end, I don’t care whether you love me or you hate me, just as long as I win. The deck is stacked. The rules are rigged. Welcome to the death of the Age of Reason. There is no right or wrong. The first part I agree completely.
    The second derails too much. What do people really want? Maslow described it best.
    Start small, start simple: people want food, you don't want to give it away for free. Too much free stuff, no effort, that's a recipe for desaster. Give them a place to stay, some rations for the beggining, a job to start building infracstructure to start and watch them go build a country they feel is truly theirs. Only then can you introduce the concept of democracy as politicians would understand it.
    Comitee while people starve or freeze to death? What the hell would they need suits for at that moment?

    That is why the United States is a republic, not a democracy. Democracy means "by the majority" while Republic means "by the law." Even the Founding Fathers themseĺves stated that the U.S. is a republic. The Pledge of Allegiance said that it's a republic.

    >>Jonathan Irons: Democracy? Democracy. Democracy is not what these people need, hell, it's not even what they want. America has been trying to install democracies in nations for a century and it hasn't worked one time. Now why do you think that is? Because these countries don't have the most basic building blocks to support a democracy. Little things like, "We ought to be tolerant of those that disagree with us." Or, "We ought to be tolerant of those who worship a different god than us!" Or, "A journalist ought to be able to disagree with the fucking president!" And you think you can just march into these countries - based on some fundamentalist, religious principles - drop a few bombs, topple a dictator and start a democracy? Huh. Give me a break. People don't want freedom. They want rules… boundaries… protection… From invaders, and from themselves. People need a leader who can give them both the support and constraints to keep chaos at bay. You give them that, and they'll follow. And that's where I come in.

This makes life predictable, and establishes a level of physical, financial and social safety. Your employer can't tell you that they won't pay you, the random dude on the street can't beat you up because he feels like it, because there are laws and they are enforced.

Laws are the boundaries people must follow and basic protections provided by law enforcement and government forces. Irons is simply taking things a bit further in regions that are not as well off as the US, UK, Germany, Japan, and such. This is a well researched and studied field in political science, showing why US' efforts at spreading democracy around the world has been nothing but failures. Those that did succeeded either went through a dictatorship phase (Taiwan) or has heavy intervention by the US in terms of resources and infrastructure (Japan). There has already been a consensus among scholars that you don't create a successful democracy by overthrowing the previous dictatorship and leave.
