This video is made in honor of my late older sister. I dug into the Fallout: New Vegas voice registry & cut, spliced, merged, and mixed Joshua Graham to sound as though he's speaking a single coherent monologue not found in the game back in December. Took 6+ hours to get his voice intonation just right, although there's still inconsistencies. (Edit May 10th 2023: This wasn't made using an AI.) I don't even know what I'm doing anymore. I feel so lost in what I make. EDIT: Thank you all very kindly. I’m glad we all share the admiration of his gentle words presented here. +1 Btw. I like Joshua's references to things like fire, burning and heat, as it comes straight from his origin. Those bandages aren't only to look cool
@@bonk2910 I imagine a life without faith in god would be inherently lonelier. Not to say that it’s wrong or anything. But the idea that god is always with me through all the hardships in life, has always been a comfort. My faith brought me through some of the hardest parts of my life because I felt like I had someone there, alongside me. Maybe it wasn’t true, but it brought and still does bring me comfort in this harsh world. Faith may not be for everyone , but it brings comfort and happiness in a world filled with pain and sorrow.
there you go, thats the point of Joshua. I believe his character is supposed to be a reflection on and a hard counter to the attitude of many "Christians" in America, and the world even. They talk about God's goodness, they pray for those who suffer, but they don't take it upon themselves to let God's goodness pour forth from their own hands. He fights for his home and these people who can't defend themselves. Perhaps he goes too far, and it is up to the player to rein him in, but he is nonetheless a man of action. A man who sees that something needs to be done and does not wait and beg for an invisible hand to do it.
Graham had inscribed on his 1911: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” One of my top five bible verses, and one I think of in times of adversity.
The etchings on his gun are greek text "καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει" on the left side and "καὶ ἡ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν" on the right side. What it means is "And the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not" which in my understanding just depends on what bible you read. For example The King James Bible says at John 1:5 "And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." while the American standard's interpretation "And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not.
@@TheSilentSoprano1 I think "comprehended it not" refers to a more alien relationship between light and dark if that makes sense. I feel like it has more to do where, in a world filled with evil, a single act of good can seem completely foreign and unreal.
"In a world filled with misery and uncertainty, it is a great comfort to know that, in the end, there is light in the darkness." Joshua Graham (Fallout NV)
“There are many reasons why that would be a bad idea. I will illuminate three. First, do not believe that because Daniel is a missionary he is incapable of, or unwilling, to defend himself. Second, if you harm Daniel or any of the Sorrows or Dead Horses, I will find you. Make no mistake. God willing, you will not leave this valley. Lastly, waging war against good people is bad for the soul. This may not seem important to you now, but it's the most important thing I've said.”
As marked on his .45 ACP pistol : καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει καὶ ἡ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν --> And the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not. Gospel of John 1:5.
Joshua Graham: "In such times we can turn to the lord" Person: "I do not I trust religion" Joshua Graham: You are still welcomed with open arms, food, and safety from danger regardless.
Joshua Graham, the man I would follow in war. He's the best. Very welcoming despite our circumstances. I probably be follower of him. Be peace with you.
Joshua is a simple man. he was man beaten and bruised, burned and cut, a d after all he has done, both good and bad, he still believes in his words, and the words he was teached, and all he wants is peace.
this is religion in gaming done right. I love it. Ulysses and Joshua are the characters I always want to interact with, which is why I always play their dlcs first
I always just play in the order they were released. Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road. I like seeing how they all foreshadow the characters from other DLCs.
@@dillankempter5780 - Yeah, it definitely makes more sense chronologically to do the DLCs in order since they sort of tell their own little intertwined story with the Courier and Ulysses, which is why it irks me when I play them out of order; like if you play OWB before Dead Money and find out exactly what happened to Christine and where a lot of the Sierra Madre's tech came from there aren't unique dialogue options for them. I understand why there aren't but still, slightly disappointing
Joshua Graham is such a well written character that he has people becoming Christians man this game is amazing I’m so glad obsidian showed Bethesda how to make a religious character not just a crazy heretic
Honestly, you said it so well. I don't know why every religious man has to be some psycho when there are so many of us that just want to help those that are lost. Joshua Graham seems like he would be one of us
@@Ma1q444 he spews garbage when he was a legion commander. Another religious man using God 2 defend his sins...blah and if he wasn't doing that why believe in God in the first place
There's a reason you can find people who have no idea what a Fallout is, yet have that quote on their walls or waterbottles. When a quote surpasses your audience and makes it in the wider world, that's when you know your writers are top teir.
I’m a huge fallout fan since I played fallout 3 in 2009 when I played new vegas I heard this quote here and as someone who isn’t religious but believes in a creator it gives me comfort everyday I wake up I listen to it now when I feel lonely I have my god there peacefully waiting for me no matter how much good or bad I do that gives me great comfort
My little cousin passed away in a house fire a few months ago. Her bio was the quote "I survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me" I started doing some research on where this quote came from and it lead me to this video. I'm speechless. I feel like she wanted me to find this..
What really caught me about Joshua was how he never spoke with judgment on those who couldn’t defend themselves, he didn’t look at those he was protecting as “weak” he looked at their circumstances and understood why they do not fair well, and why he can help them. A man who struggles with his own personal demons every day, and chooses the hard path and doesn’t run from his sins. That to me is why he doesn’t judge others, because he’s not in denial of his sins, he knows they are a part of him just like everyone else has their own battles with sin.
@@tavish4699 One should not work to find worth, one should not work to run away from things. It would be a wise thing to work because work is good, and helpful for one's life in immense and numerous ways.
I love how when you really get down to it, the one behind the dreaded legend of the Burned Man - the fallen champion of the Caesar - was just a simple guy trying to build something positive and stable in a world spiraling into darkness. He was the kind of caring, devout man that once might have been a friend and a teacher to everyone in his community. Not really a killer by nature; just someone who was pushed too far too many times, and finally decided he'd had enough.
To add to it too it took him being taken away and returned to his family, his true family, away from the poison of the legion that he truly began to heal again and start a new life as the "burned man".
True. Graham was not always a noble individual-- there were times where lands like Denver saw the true evilness of the First Legate. But whatever saved him at the bottom of the Grand Canyon must have come off as divine providence if nothing else.
@@richardavelino7383 Joshua is a lot like Skullface from MGS5, but he has choice, the option of the path of revegnance, or the path of forgiveness, the courier gets to nudge him whatever way the player sees fit.
It's only fair he tries the one The Courier cuz he sees him or her as another suffering Soul like him he sees that this person suffered and is also driven by vengeance so one legend meaning another in the making.
Especially because he isn't purely good. Not just because of his sordid past, but by the time he met the Courier, he was still a very angry man. Even then, he can still direct this immense hatred to some good, even if it ends up corrupting those who follow him. That is, unless he is made to realize that he is simply justifying his actions when he turns to butchery against the White Legs, to wipe them out completely. He states that he was baptised twice, once in water, once in fire, but he was also given a path to redemption twice. First by his fellow mormons, then by a Good Karma, High Speech Courier 6.
@@greg77389 Yeah. Joshua is a Mormon. Though, the majority of his IRL faith are... Creepy motherfuckers. Still, as with all things, there are good people within.
"God be with you." This is such a powerful phrase, even though it's something most religious people say to others everyday. But the fact that Joshua only says it once, means that he truly means it. He is entrusting you to God, the highest form of love that he can give. Beautiful.
I’m an atheist but I work at a library in a rural area and most people are religious. They regularly say this to me and it always makes me feel so nice. They wish for their god to look out for me despite my beliefs. I really appreciate that and it means a lot to me
@@johanmikkael6903 as a Christian, you're right in saying this. I myself should learn to do this as I think I may be guilty of doing it even when im not aware of it
I’m a Mormon myself, and oftentimes I see us depicted inaccurately in media, and frankly that’s fine. But Joshua…jeez, man. I remember running into him in Vegas, and I don’t think I’ve ever met a character I can emphasize more with. So much of what he says I believe and is apart of my life, and everything about him seems so…I don’t know, heart touching? This is a character that isn’t real and has never existed, and yet I feel bad for him, admire him, understand him. In a lot of ways Joshua is who I hope to become, really. Someone who’s made mistakes and knows that, and is trying to repent for them. And yet at the same time doesn’t crush themselves with self doubt or hatred, that loves others and knows they love him. He even has the compassion to care for his enemies; I remember finding out that if you tell Joshua you’ll harm the Dead Horses, he first threatens you, but finishes with a warning about how murdering good people is bad for the soul, and how it’s the most important reason why you shouldn’t. It sounds awesome, but if you think about it, isn’t that some kind of compassion? By telling you it’s the most important reason, he sets aside his own threat and appreciation for the Dead Horses, and instead thinks about YOU. He doesn’t want you to harm yourself. Maybe he doesn’t want you to make the same mistakes he did when he helped Caesar.
The Followers of the Apocalypse, and Mormon missionaries were the two factions who brought food, aid and medicine to wasteland. If the NCR was the governing body of the people, the Followers and the Mormons were the humanitarian branch. The Brotherhood didn't reach out to people in need, and the fascist Legion, and the Enclave, sought to enslave them.
New vegas is the only game I know of that gives LDS people a fair shake, making Joshua Graham, one of the best written characters in fallout one of you guys, Daniel (who i read as the New testament to Joshua's old testament, a cool dichotomy to examine) and Bert gunnarson. Certainly better than Starship troopers :)
I was an agnostic my whole life, and only just recently became Christian, but I have *always* had a deep respect for Mormons. You are undoubtedly some of the nicest, most respectful people in the modern world and I always try to go to bat for you guys if I see someone slandering you - even if I am a dirty Catholic ;)
My only nitpick with Graham is it seems the writers didn't do any specific research about the LDS faith, just Christians in general. Quoting the Bible is awesome, and him also referencing something like Mosiah 2:17, Ether 12:27, or Moroni 9:6 would've been mind-blowing.
I’m not religious by any means but joshua graham is one of the most incredibly written and profound characters I’ve ever seen. Every time this dude speaks it’s pure wisdom
I went from an atheist to a spiritualist because of his writing. Man got me out of a dark place when I had no one else was there for me. The speeches are profound in and almost magical way.
Religion in the end teaches us harmony as everything around is the creation of the omnipotent being or beings. Even if we dont believe in their existence its just comfy to know that you are existing and connected to everything around you, and it includes all the good things even if they are sunk in the depths of the bad ones. This mindset can exist without dogmas and names and even without realizition of one who follows it.
I've been listening to this video for over a year now, back then I was depressed thinking I wasn't going anywhere in life. I relapsed and decided to just push to be happier, and it worked. Now, a year later, I'm 31, fighting stage 4 pancreatic cancer. I watched my parents both cry and breakdown, my sister calling me her baby brother and asking why she had to watch me suffer, as well as many friends grieving for me. I was close to death since it had spread to my liver and there were severe lesions and whatnot. However...I made it. Its been almost 7 months, I finish my last 2 chemo treatments, and the tumor that killed my pancreas which was 7 cm, the size of a peach, has now been reduced to scar tissue. When my oncologist told me, her and her staff said I was one of the toughest most humble patients they ever treated, and that I would be able to live a nice long comfortable life, even though I can never work again. My coworkers and boss have been constantly checking on me...even as far as raising almost 1k just for me to have. I cried and felt so loved and appreciated not just for my hard work, but for the kindness I gave to everyone. I'm still battling depression, and my mom has watched and heard me cry asking why did this have to happen. She reminded me that I survived, that I can help others fight who didn't get to have others to support them like what I had. And that's what I wanna do with my life. I wanna be a shoulder and strength for those who have no one who are fighting chronic illnesses like me. No one should have to fight alone, ever. Hearing Graham say "The fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me" reminds me of how hard I've been fighting without even realizing it. I beat one of the deadliest cancers, and now, as my mother has reminded me, my life is meant for a new path. I hope that when you read this, that you do not feel sorry for me, but that you find the strength deep within you to keep fighting, no matter how dark it gets, that you will find the light, and if not, I will come to you with fire to help illuminate the way with you, and I will call you my friend. This world is very cruel, but it doesn't mean we have to give in to its cruelty. You are stronger than that, and I believe in you. -Matthew
“When the walls come tumbling down, when you lose everything you have, you always have family. The fire that’d kept me alive, was love, their love, God’s love.” Such a comforting quote, i’m in no way religious but there’s a certain peace in the fact that Graham had such a stoic faith in God, someone who was treated so harshly and only wanted redemption for who he truly was before his injuries
"When the walls come crumbling down, and you loose everything you had, you always have Family." The love of your family- your true family, be they bound in blood, in friendship or in faith, can conquer anything. It's a beautiful message. And even though Joshua and I do not follow the same path of Faith, it is something we both understand.
The first time I played this dlc was right before my father passed away. Joshua graham will always be in my mind as a symbol of faith and strength. I had his words in my head the entire week of the funeral and it really helped.
I was in Iraq in 2007, the deadliest year of the war. I saw so much darkness before my 20th birthday. I came to faith after the war. I have been struggling with so much recently and this came into my recommended. I have listened to it at least once a day for the last week or so. Thank you for making it, I needed to hear it I think.

This is probably the perfect character in all of video games that represents the “god fearing man” he’s not satirized to be a representation of the evils of religion and he is not preachy or obnoxious he’s just wise.
For me it's the conviction in how he says things. When he threatens the player it's not in an angry or scary voice. He's stating a fact, if the player crosses or hurts anyone Joshua cares about he will hunt them down.
Joshua Graham presents a very accurate, though often misunderstood, portrait of christianity. As you'll find in John 14, 15 and 16, the mission of Jesus Christ isn't to say that if you follow him, life will be good and easy. In fact it's the complete opposite, he promises that life will be difficult, even more so if you take up your cross and follow him. But what he does promise is meaning, it's the light in the darkness, it's the hope that not a single moment of suffering, of your suffering, will be in vain... Without that hope, life becomes mere luck of the draw. If it goes well, carry on, if it goes badly, yield. Thing is, none of us ever want to yield, and when our loved ones do they take a piece of our soul with them. But if life is suffering and if there's no ultimate meaning to any of it, why continue to exist? If you are suffering so much, and the end goal is the same either way, why not just pack it in and go gentle into that good night? The suffering of the world is what leads most people to abandon God, and in that you're certainly not alone. But a world without God isn't a world without suffering, it's just a world where suffering doesn't matter.
Do you think the chracter of Joshua was created from ether? It takes several real or fictional people and couples them together. The whole "burned man" comes from the "Rurouni Kenshin" manga character Shishio. His words come from the OT and etc.

I picture Joshua seeing you sitting there, broken, lost, and heartbroken, lost in a moment of darkness, and deep within his searing, tortured body, his heart throbs with sympathy. He just comes to sit next to you, his Bible in his hand, and starts saying this. Maybe, as much as it agonizes him to do so, he puts his other bandaged hand on your shoulder to give it a reassuring squeeze. Finally, knowing he has said what he can, he stands up, gripping his cherished bible, and with a parting "God be with you" he leaves to attend to other things.
“In such times we can turn to the Lord… but it’s good to have friends.” I don’t know why, but this line always makes me tear up a little. The sincerity with which he says it really does sound like it comes from a man who has well and truly drowned in loneliness, and then found companions to walk life’s journey with and saw it as so beautiful that it was akin to salvation for him. God is good, yes. But it’s nice to have friends.

I lost my brother back in August. Been trying to come to terms with it since then, dealing with episodes of depression and grieving. He was a fanatic for Fallout, so when I'd stumbled upon this video, it hit me like a freight train. It hurts, but it's simultaneously comforting. Thank you for making this.
Your brother is in better place, where love is. Our hearts are connection to love. Your brother has never truly left you as he will be always with you. If the places were switched and you were the one to die but you can only say one sentence to him, I believe it would be like this: "I love you brother and I will always be with you". Dont grieve, as your brother will be sad when be sees you like that but rather continue to do good deeds, to help this world. One more thing, if he is in better place, why go feel sad? One day you sill rejoin him, and remember he never left you. :)
I lost a brother too about 6 years ago. I’m sorry to hear about yours. You playing these games is one way to keep his memory alive. Know that you’ll learn to live with this loss, and like Joshua Graham says “Some days are, harder than others… but I must try.” You’ll make it through man, we’re all here for you.
I cannot imagine your pain. The loss of human life. One so close to you. All I can offer is the pain when I lost my dog. A dog I had loved. A dog that taught me not to be afraid of animals. One that taught me how many, people and animals alike, are desperate for affection. A dog whose euthanasia caused me to cry like a child thirteen times in one day. I loved my dog. When I think back on him, I feel pain. I cannot imagine his face without pain. I imagine you feel the same. Hold on to the pain. But don't let it define you. Allow your heart to feel joy. It will be painful. But it is necessary to heal.

I always found it fascinating playing Honest Hearts as an actual skeptic because Joshua and Daniel were both devout in their beliefs but amazingly- the brutal warrior was the one who more accommodating, spiritual and actually showed me WHY someone would want to believe at all. Daniel was preachy while Joshua was a preacher, Daniel quoted sculpture while Joshua acted biblically. Daniel was defensive about his flaws while Joshua wore his scars everyday, Daniel talked about God but Joshua showed me his Mercy.
One must have a capacity or even familiarity with evil to understand and speak against it. Not to support the actions of Joshua before his burning, but there is something more authentic and commanding about a man who has done evil, and suffered for it, asking without commanding for someone he encounters to be good. And something rewarding in saving him from his own potential relapse into evil, if only because we are all of us flawed. Man does not respect the naive or unexperienced, and for good reason. A man who has touched hell has more to speak of in matters of heaven, than one who has never seen or experienced either.
Listen to him and look for the Lord. Christ is waiting for you to have fellowship with Him. You have a creator who loves and cares for you. Just open up a Bible and start at the book of John. May God be with you✝️

I keep coming back after 3 years. I don't know what it is about this character. I think he's the incorruptible, fighting spirit of justice (mixed with mercy) that our society is starved for. I hope you can find that reason to carry on every day. I can say this; we can all encounter God. We won't all like what we find, though. Truly a Christian portrayed accurately. I opened my old Bible for the first time in over a decade because of this character and this video. I opened right to John 1:5 summed up it reads “There is light in the darkness.”
Those who seek the Lord will find him. I've done what you did many times, and when I've really needed it, what I've opened up to has been so on point, that it was essentially a two way conversation, much like how bumblebee (in transformers) takes audio clips to form his responses. With 31,000 verses in the Bible, opening up to the one that is the inspiration for this video could just be a coincidence. But I prefer to call such things divine winks. 😉
If I had a nickel for every time someone told me they became religious because of Joshua Graham, I’d have two nickels. That isn’t much, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
"The fire that had kept me alive was love... their love... God's love..." Joshua, words can't explain how thankful I am that you showed me God... thank you.
I find it fascinating that this man has convinced not only me but others to believe in a form of God. I dont believe in God itself but rather there is a God, the sun is our God. No amount of money will ever be able to compare to the 15 dollars spent on Honest Hearts dlc.
I really don't mean to be a absolutely tragic killjoy, but logically you should thank the people behind it who created this masterfully blessed character & edit...Anyway, praise God if you found Him. Regardless, may God be with you always until the end my friend.
It's weird. I can't stop replaying this video. Every single time, a new sentence hits me like a planet-destroying asteroid. I think of a different person, different subject, theme, moment in my life. I have to admit, this might be one of the greatest videos on UA-cam. A beacon of hope.
*”When the walls come tumbling down, when you lose everything you have... You always have family.”* I was at one of my lowest points recently this year, I had locked up for months, work passing me by, stern talks with foreman, and advisors, and it all shot right over my head, I’m surprised I wasn’t fired for how much I had slacked during that time- But I simply couldn’t find the motivation within the day to do anything with myself- -then of course I found this video. I was already well-aware of F:NV, with Joshua Graham being my most beloved character of all. And when he spoke, I genuinely began to feel better through it all. I started praying every night, and making promises to myself to do as good a Job as I could. And while I may still not be up to 100% yet, this video helped me realize that- no matter how low you are, you always have love, you always have family... Until then, God be with You.
I know what you mean. When the lockdown started and didn’t end I was at one of the lowest points in my life. For some odd reason, the past few months started picking up for me. And now I found this video, which made me realize I need to return to my faith. I am praying more too. Stay strong man, it gets better. God be with you
@@bobbyhinner3225 Thanks, my man- times ain’t what they should be, and I myself long for a simpler period, just need to keep calm, pray, and hope that things will settle back down to the way it was, or as close as we can get.
Ive said it time and time again, but this really is a testament to the quality of writing in New Vegas. Obsidian really should be the new caretakers of Fallout, now that they're under the Microsoft umbrella with Bethesda.
@@m60soldier Sawyer still there for some unknown reason, but without Gonzalez and Avellone out idk if nu obsidian has the chops for a game like New Vegas again.
Its amazing how a game can influence so many people in religious/sociopolitical ways. I saw so many people drastically change their worldview over the conversations of Caesar, Mr House and of course Joshua. Other developers should take notes.
That's how you know characters have depth and purpose in their actions. It is sad to see games like Outer Worlds throw it back in our faces. I stopped playing the game after I took the priest on his vision quest, only for him to leave with no answers and for everything in his life to still be a charade. When you pigeonhole characters into positions where they never change, and gain no convictions or do not build a foundation for existing convictions...they feel empty. It is a shame they don't make games like they used to.
They won’t. But there is comfort in knowing that among all the empty words, and pointless stories, there is one familiar light to return to, no matter when.
I know this probably will go buried, but these last two months have felt like setback after setback that I've struggled to recover and overcome. Sometimes, it is incredibly difficult to recognize my own self-worth and to keep pushing forward in fighting for a better community... but then I remember the love and kindness that so many people have shown me, and it pushes me to get back up and try again.
Can we all agree that Joshua Graham is just one of the coolest kind of character archetypes out there. A person who seems exceedingly tough, intimidating, and maybe even a little deranged, who has done bad things, but still just has this unshakable faith, wisdom, and understanding. This man just said all of this like a kind and caring great grandfather.
Some may find his words to be hypocritical or patronizing, but he isn't speaking out his ass. He's speaking from experience, from what he's seen and felt in his lowest hours. He's not a saint, nor does he claim to be, but he knows a godless path just by glancing at it. And he just hopes nobody follows him down it.
I love that Graham message isn't about the fundamentalism of christianism, or how everything is inpure and Jesus will erase everything bad like most of the christian comically stereotypes. His message is about hope, forgiveness, and love of those who you are close and from a God who isn't vengeful, but kind and caring.
Tis how I see God, accepting of most things and understanding a being who wants peace, order and freedom. That's just my interpretation I believe that a lot of people forced their beliefs into the Bible tbh
I recreated this speech at my graduation ceremony. Of course I tweeked a little but it was the same speech. My study hour teacher liked it so much he had it put on a plaque in his classroom.
It’d be delightful to see a picture of this plaque sent to my email located in my channel’s “About” section if you’re able to do so! I’d love to see it

I just lost a good friend a couple days ago. Met him through xbox probably 4 years ago. Along with several others. We had become lifelong friends. I talked to that man every day for those 4 years. We would all party up and talk all night playing destiny and other games. We also loved fallout. He helped me out so much when my wife left me and he was the one person who would sit there and listen to my troubles. I miss him so much and I havent been able to cry in a couple years because of trauma. And this video just brought me to tears thinking about him. We miss you Shain and just know you were loved so much by so many.
Joshua Graham stood out to me when I was a teenager. I came from a non religious family, I never had faith in my life. It's odd how a character in a video game set me on a path to join the Church.
I have lost 10 years of my life to depression and have only just started trying to change that. I have also developed crippling social anxiety. I watch this video 4 times a day everyday because it is incredibly therapeutic even though I am not religious. Thank you for creating something so beautiful.
I feel that in my bones. I rejoice in solidarity with you. I've lost a lot of time to those things as well. I've been trying for a long while to make up for lost time, but it gets harder and harder for me as time goes on. I'm anxiously waiting for when it slowly starts to get easier. I'm doing my best to look for that light in the darkness.
I feel you, brother. Depression has ruined my closest friendships and taken many years of my life. I’ve been so fed up with it and tired of being myself. But life changes and so do we, dawg. We’ll get better with time. Baby steps :)
@@TwistedFireX I can understand that sentiment. For me, it's like a reminder that if other people can live with these difficulties, then maybe I can too.
Joshua is the only Character in Fallout New Vegas who emphasizes the importance of not just surviving but being HUMAN. He never offers up himself or who he represents as the most ideal way for humans to survive but he highlights that its only worth surviving if we act like humans, and humans are spiritual creatures that dont always act logical. every other faction appeals to survival, Joshua appeals to your soul
Been stuck in a loop of no activity, I've stopped studying, lost focus and dedication, stopped going to the gym, I lost sight of what I've been fighting for. A month later and I come across this video, Grahams words, through your channel, made me find the light shining in the darkness, thank you. There is much to be done, and we can't expect the gods to do all the work.
As someone who hasn't been religious in many years this has shaken me a bit. I've listened to it on repeat, digesting the words and praising the writing. It feels so close to home in this current day and age, while I don't know if I can turn back to religion, This has spoken to me much more than any preacher or priest, its visceral and based in reality unlike what seems to feel like a "perfect world" pushed in my face that religion offered. To anyone reading this, have a good damn good one, I wish you the best in what ever road you take. Cheers to the edit, thanks for the experience.
i'm sorry brother for all the priest of any kind trying to preach their own stuff, that is not what the goal of Christianity is, and I hope you find faith in god and Mary alike (and Jesus)
Honestly I found my faith was strongest when I didn't go to church. Preachers and Priest read what they think the bible says as fact and it was never how I read the passages. I hope you find the light you need. You have a good one too man.
I have long since left my faith but I do think there is genuine wisdom in his words. I do believe there is light in the darkness that often clouds our world, but we as humans have to be the ones who ignite it and carry it through our actions and deeds
Same here. In truth Joshua really made me realize how much slacking I was doing with my religion, and how much more I had to do to be truly a man of God. Shortly after watching clips of his quotes I quickly picked up my Torah and began reading again. Gotta love video game characters who inspire you more than any Priest/Rabbi ever could.
@@NoobZxReviewZ for me I felt that religion was boring when I was younger but until recently I see religion as a missing part of me since it's been with me in my beginning
Joshua's redemption has always reminded me of Solnietsyn - "the line between good and evil goes through the heart of every person, in even the most wicked there is a grain of goodness and in the most moral there is a temptation of evil"
I love how this helped my alcoholism and others than treatment, you and your sister have help 4 million people. "We all go through darkness." her death was not in vein, you two were the spark in the the dark for many.
I had once neck of the femur broken and was stuck in the bed. I wasn't eager for rehabilitation, but I somehow made it. I can walk now. I know, that broken leg, and amputated leg are a very different things, but neveryheless, I hope you will walk as best as you can. We will fall, but we can always get up and move as best, as we can.
Debatable on good you see him go back to his old ways if you side with him massacring a whole tribe and turning the dead horses into his new legion. He's a fanatic and why he's scary is you can see his charisma inspiring atrocities and massacres. You may come to regret it when you find Joshua Graham was the far worse one to Kaisar.
Usually in media, christians are either obnoxiously religious and that's their entire character, or say they're religious, but do basically nothing religious other than pointing to god to justify their actions once a while and do everything they shouldn't. I'm not christian, but I am happy that there is at least Joshua here in the world. Showing that no matter religion, they are people, we are all people, and that's the thing that we should judge each other with. Not who you believe in, but who you are.
While I may not be religious. Joshua actually helped a young naive me better understand and respect religion, as well why people turn to it in dark times and how it can help guide those who feel lost.
@KhorneKob I mean it's more than that cuz of what you said and there's physical evidence to back alot of the Jewish, Quan, and Christan beliefs with documents from the government back then and other physical proof like the Arc of The Covenant that's being held by the CIA. Science has ruled out to alot of people that a being like God can't exist to most people when this "magic" does exist and it's hard to believe this type of stuff when you're told by everyone in your life and in books that there's no way a God can exist. I asked for answers and he gave them to me when I gave in. That's what I mean it's more than just a coping mechanism cuz it's very real even I can't give you a Google source or go back and time and show you the stuff happening. If you'd like I'd love to tell you more cuz as a Christan it's my duty to help you learn but not force you which is how it's supposed to be not forcing people into it like with slavery.
@KhorneKob bruh like the CIA have the arc of the covenant and the arc of the covenant can only be opened by a direct decendant of Moses cuz if you do try and you aren't they wrote that unknown forces come from the box and attack. They could try blowing it up but they said that after x-rays on it they noticed stone slabs inside the box so they suspect that the 10 commandments are in the box being protected by spirits. It's all on the CIA website and the shit reads like an SCP article I couldn't believe what I was reading at first and had to check if the website I was on was real.
Think on it, and look in your heart. When the walls come tumbling down, when you lose everything you have, you always have family. The fire that had kept me alive, was love. Their love. God's love.
This is stupid, absolutely dumb. How can this be this good and inspiring, I literally have it in my morning song playlist so the first thing I hear in the morning is this. It's almost unfair how good it is
"The light of the mind alone cannot burn away all darkness" THIS was the quote that shattered all my ego of me being an almighty person capable of everything, while I was in the midst of the most miserable and depressing period of my life. We NEED ALWAYS something else... Much greater than one.
Of all the videos you've made Poppa, I value this one the most. I'm at a tough point in my life. A lot of people are. The world is so dark, so much greed and negativity. But as Graham said, there is a light in the darkness. I can personally testify that.
I sent this to my dad via audio, and told me that he really needed this. He is going through difficult times considering he is working abroad. I want to personally thank you for creating this. Know that a person you have never met before, or perhaps never will be, was touched by your video.
"In such times we can turn to the lord... but it's good to have friends." I love this line so much. It puts in your head that even though Joshua's faith was everything to him, he also knew that people who he loved were also just as important as his faith.
Becuase they have faith in him and thats he he prays for them and inturn he prays for to the lord like a fire of coals together they keep warmer together so their faith burns more fervantly and pleases the lord. when someone prays for healing or something good God hears it and when you have friends who pray for each this impressives God and he grants this prayer I can't remember where this line is the gospel where tells the story of friends praying for for him he impressed and says something along these lines but better if anyone knows off by heart plase put it here as you do it better then me.
“ I don't even know what I'm doing anymore. I feel so lost in what I make” Your comment is kind of symbolic. You made this vid because you didn’t know what to do but by doing that this vid help many people find their way back and know what to do with their lives. “The lost souls point the way back so no one ends up like them”
I lost my world last November. Tonight is hitting worse than it has in awhile. I want to forget and move on, but it feels like it's never going to end. New job, new hobbies, the further I move forward, the more it reminds me of her. I wish things could have turned out different, and I wish I could stop wasting time on pointless thoughts of her. I'm thankful for God always being with me and I'm thankful for this video. It's nice to know at some point, this will all pass and there will be some light at the end of the tunnel. God bless.
I think Joshua might be the best depiction of my religion in any piece of media I've seen. The things he says about God, faith, work, family, etc, and also the way he says them, it all feels like something I've heard on Sunday. I think Honest Hearts might be the best thing I've seen in Fallout, because every word the Burned Man says feels like he's saying it directly to me, like I'm 11 years old again and he's my bishop, talking to me about what's going to be expected of me when I gain the Aaronic Priesthood. I don't know if I'll ever find something or someone in a videogame who makes me feel as driven and inspired as he does
That encapsulates exactly what I felt talking to my Bishop when I first got the priesthood aswell. He wishes to reach out with love but will defend what he loves when needed
“The fire that kept me alive was love, their love, god’s love” That part made me choke up and it hit really close to me. I love it. Just to clarify I lost a friend and a mother figure years ago but what they left behind still burns inside me.
A couple years ago, April 30th, 2022, my stepfather suddenly passed away at three in the morning from a heart attack. A couple weeks went by, and while I was in my VoTech class (as this was still during high school when my stepdad had passed), I found this video in my recommended feed while I was looking for music to listen to while I worked. By the time the video ended when I first watched, I was on the verge of tears because of how close to home that it really hit. A couple of days ago...and now, at the time I'm writing up this comment in hopes UA-cam doesn't take it down (May 13th, 2024), I realize that Joshua reminds me a lot of my stepdad, which is probably why I connect with Joshua so positively. In fact...sometimes when I listen to this video, out of the number of times I have since I found this video, I don't necessarily hear just Joshua Graham talking...sometimes I hear my stepdad saying all of these things to me, through Joshua's voice. So...for you, the creator of this video...thank you. And I wish you the best, wherever you may be right now. To everyone else...be there for your loved ones. Tell them you love them. Cherish the moments you have with them. Because you never know when they can be taken away from you. Much love.
It’s kinda funny how a game about post apocalyptic America with Robots , mutated dinosaurs and gun wielding Romans can be so real and thought provoking.
Yet that is the foundation in all of human history. Whether it be oral traditions, writing, books, music, movies, and now Video games, we use whatever medium available to us to...express narratives. We for thousands of years are storytellers. This is how we transmit ideas, thoughts and ideals. This is what WE do as human beings. Why don't say..dogs, chimps, elephants birds do what we do? We plain like stories and will always use it for self expression
As a firefighter who suffers with ptsd this reminds me of my faith, both as a Christian and for humanity. Fallout new vegas is so interesting. When it was still the newest fallout game, people talked about how great lonesome road and old world blues were so great. Then a few years later, people were warming up to dead money a lot more. Back then though, I was wondering why nobody talked about honest hearts since it had one of my favorite characters, Joshua Graham. Here we are now, and now people are warming up to honest hearts like they did dead money. I guess new vegas truly is aging like wine.
As someone who grew up with Christianity forced down his neck to the point of resenting it, a video game character named Joshua Graham gave me newfound respect and a loss of disdain for it, truly an amazingly written character

(Edit May 10th 2023: This wasn't made using an AI.)

there you go, thats the point of Joshua.

Helping and accepting other people in spite of their shortcomings are perhaps some of the highest forms of acceptance and love.

Especially because he isn't purely good. Not just because of his sordid past, but by the time he met the Courier, he was still a very angry man.

I feel that in reality, Joshua Graham would be a great friend and a terrifying enemy to have.
For me it's the conviction in how he says things. When he threatens the player it's not in an angry or scary voice. He's stating a fact, if the player crosses or hurts anyone Joshua cares about he will hunt them down.
@@Richard-Espanol he treats every statement as promised to be carried out, not a baseless statement he doesn’t have to owe up to.

"I survived because the fire inside burned brighter than the fire around me." Most badass character in game.
I like your good words, Holy man.

I haven’t heard a better way to describe Joshua and David.

This is also a great portrayal of a good Muslim, like verbatim, down to using light in the darkness as an analogy for God and the community
Even fictional, Joshua Graham is the most badass Mormon since John Moses Browning himself.
If I had a nickel for every time someone told me they became religious because of Joshua Graham, I’d have two nickels. That isn’t much, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

"The fire that had kept me alive was love... their love... God's love..."
Joshua, words can't explain how thankful I am that you showed me God... thank you.
I find it fascinating that this man has convinced not only me but others to believe in a form of God. I dont believe in God itself but rather there is a God, the sun is our God. No amount of money will ever be able to compare to the 15 dollars spent on Honest Hearts dlc.
It was fire that should've killed him and it was fire that kept him alive.
T'was grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relieved.

I was at one of my lowest points recently this year, I had locked up for months, work passing me by, stern talks with foreman, and advisors, and it all shot right over my head, I’m surprised I wasn’t fired for how much I had slacked during that time- But I simply couldn’t find the motivation within the day to do anything with myself-
-then of course I found this video.
I cried thank you for that.
I know what you mean. When the lockdown started and didn’t end I was at one of the lowest points in my life. For some odd reason, the past few months started picking up for me.

Obsidian isn't the same as they used to be. The Outer Worlds was garbage with weak writing. The obsidian that made new vegas is gone.
Even fallout 76 is better than outer worlds, absolute dumpster fire
@@acev3521 I'd rather play fallout 4 or 76 over the outer worlds any day honestly and that's saying something
Sign of a well-written story. What a blessing.
May God give you strength brother
I saw your post, how are you friend. I hope your good.
Yes
he gives me similar vibes to uncle Iroh. the characters that have been through hell and back so you don't have to are always inspiring.
I love that Graham message isn't about the fundamentalism of christianism, or how everything is inpure and Jesus will erase everything bad like most of the christian comically stereotypes. His message is about hope, forgiveness, and love of those who you are close and from a God who isn't vengeful, but kind and caring.
@Hunter Smith Yes, but the erasing part is what gives. Jesus erases the sin eith love, not hate.

I have long since left my faith but I do think there is genuine wisdom in his words. I do believe there is light in the darkness that often clouds our world, but we as humans have to be the ones who ignite it and carry it through our actions and deeds
I hear you. I found the family Joshua describes in the Orthodox Church. God bless you.

Hate to sound cheesy, but Joshua got me back into my faith, just his outlook and genuine faith made me reflect and turn back to the church.

I feel like most people just see Christianity as a coping mechanism for our existence when it's more than that.
@@MrNickTheKid11 The peoples that loves to accuse peoples of coping are those who are actually coping
I love this line so much.
