When I was in Israel on Birthright, the hotel had special light switches/timers that you could set before Shabbat so that the lights would go on and off when you wanted! Also, they had a special Shabbat elevator that stopped at EVERY SINGLE FLOOR so that people wouldn’t have to push a button and therefore do work!
Love Shabbat! I like to think of it as a time to disconnect from certain things in order to better connect with the most important things. Thanks Marion 😊
Shabbat is my favourite day! Like you, some things don’t necessarily makes sense to me but I realised that the days I strictly observed it I actually felt way better so nowadays the only rule I’d break is the electronic to turn on and off Synagogue now that everything is online! I guess that’s the beautiful thing of Shabbat tho, G-d told us to rest and so much time has passed and so much has changed that not only people’s idea of what rest means is different but what should be expected of us is also up to interpretation, I guess. I love that! I am shomer because it makes me happy, I’ve tried otherwise but this is what worked better for me but I can appreciate people that have such a busy life to sit down with their whole family and watch a movie, I mean, isn’t this resting as well? It’s beautiful how every single Jew has a different way of observing shabbos and I’m always so curious to know how they do it, or even if they do it I guess! It’s already Friday where I live so I have to end it with a: Shabbat Shalom!
Loved this! I’ve learned a lot these past few years, living in my new neighborhood, surrounded by many orthodox families. Last weekend we attended our neighborhood fire station pancake breakfast - held on a Sunday, and with kosher breakfast options. It was such a fabulous and well attended event. So inclusive. It made me proud of my city!

Maybe you can read some stories for us and set the mood in yor home and decorate for your storytelling,There might be some folk stories from all over the world, you are a very lively person,we will enjoy them.
Hi I’m learning about Shabbat and believe now in the Sabbath. My question is you said on Saturday as part of Shabbat their are meals at the synagogue, but cooking ceases Friday night. Is the meal for Sat prepared before Friday night too?
Thanks Marion for your beautiful video explaining the Shabat. I have a question, I’ve realized that you do use electronics on Shabbat, but you mentioned that no electricity is to be used on shabbat
You're so welcome! Personally I am a huge proponent of not placing 'form over substance', meaning to me the point of Shabbat is to rest and so if I drive to go on a hike with my family that is Shabbat for me. Many others don't believe this is right but we all must do what's right for us!
In my home Shabbat is such a special day. For many many many years I struggled with all the restrictions I can't do this, I can't do that, I am sure everyone knows what I am talking about. Then one day the thought came to me. As Jews we are taught to question everything and yes we truly are a choosing people. I applied this logic to the restrictions on Shabbat and everything became crystal clear to me. Shabbat became a single day when I could not work into a single day I do not have to work. I no longer felt the restriction against going shopping and adopted the mindset of I simply don't have to go shopping today. I applied this to everything. Yes the work will still be there, the shopping will still need to be done but not today. Today I can gladly put all the drama and stress of everyday life on hold and enjoy not just the physical but the mental rest as well.
Also some people have non-Jews help get around those rules. “Oh man I wish it were dark in here” *hint hint* to the non-Jew to turn off the light (for example). Jews cannot ask someone else to do work for them, they just strongly hint/suggest. Also Shabbat is considered the Bride or Queen! Women are more likely to light the Shabbat candles than men!
At about 5:56 you mentioned that there may be a Bar/Bat Mitzvah happening at the synagogue during shabbat. Does Shabbat still take presidence over the Bar/Bat Mitzvahs? That had me a little confused. I'm still learning.
Yes it is confusing lol, the actual bar mitzvah (i.e. reading from the Torah or being honored in the synagogue) usually takes place during the Shabbat morning service but the party would often take place after Shabbat has ended.
I was wondering what it could mean. Not knowing the word and not being Jewish. I believe it has a spiritual meaning but what do you think it might mean?
There are lots of little intricacies and work arounds, dishes can be taken off the table and cleaned to use again on Shabbat if need be, or disposable can be used, it all depends on how strict you are and what your specific customs are.
On every Saturday evening we wash all the dishes do londry and escort the shabbat leaving us by special pray & lot of songs(escorting the Queen) with friends from shabbat hour ego, while eating what left from the uniq cake and juice of shabbat afternoon (the 3third meal). sometime latter we go to see movie or theater
I am asking for your comments on this: I am a Catholic. I do have a co-worker that is from Israel. We talk occasionally. Two weeks ago I had a dream. I was standing outside. I looked over and saw a crone crouched down dressed in black and short gray hair. I walked over to her. She was brushing dried leaves off a bronze plaque ( looked like a grave plaque but had no name on it) on the ground. Brushing left to right. On the last pass of her hand (2 in total) she looked at me with crystal blue eyes, and said "shabbat, shabbat". Never heard this word before and didnt know what it meant.I asked my friend from Israel and she said that it is a word used for sabbath. Thank you for reading. Please help with what it could mean.
